Advocating for Inclusive Dance in the Public SchoolsIn this episode of DanceCast, Silva interviews New York-based dance educator and advocate Sandi Stratton-Gonzalez. Sandi shares her dance beginnings and describes how she always identified as a teacher, even as she pursued performance opportunities, which directly led to her career as a dance educator in the public schools. She ended up working for 20 years at the first fully inclusive public school in the country, where there was also a robust performing arts program. Sandi reflects on the value of those experiences and how they informed her later work in city-wide efforts to represent dance educators and advocate for students with disabilities. She talks about how she's staying active in the field post-retirement and adapting to online spaces.Text by Emmaly Wiederholt, founder of Stance On Dance. Sandi Stratton-Gonzalez taught dance to children with special needs in inclusion and self-contained classrooms for more than 20 years at PS 372 in Brooklyn. Recently retired from the classroom, Sandi is the coordinator of the Arnhold Programs for Dance Educators and the Dance Transition Team Leader at the Office of Arts and Special Projects in NYC. She is a professional development facilitator with the Arts for Students with Disabilities Team (NYC), advocacy director for the NYS Dance Education Association and teaches dance for students with disabilities for NDEO. A member of NDEO since 2005, Sandi works with the NDEO Dance and Disabilities Task Force, whose goal is to increase the organization's capacity to support the dance and disability community. She is co-author (with C. Gallant and D. Duggan) of Dance Education for Diverse Learners: A Special Education Supplement to the Dance Blueprint and has been published in Dance: Current Selected Research Volume 7 and Dance Education in Practice, where she is a member of the editorial board. Ali Phillips began her career after founding Bust a Move Dance (BAMD), one of Australia's first inclusive dance companies for children, teens and young adults with disabilities in 2009. We have learnt a lot about shifting from one learning environment to the next, over the past year. Dance Educators have moved, modified and adapted their lessons, from in person instruction to online with little to no planning, know-how or preparation. There is no doubt that the dance community has faced challenges this year, while others saw opportunity. Today’s discussion will focus on another shift in dance education, the shift from traditional to blended learning environments. GUEST: Ursula Payne is a professor in Department of Dance and Director of the Frederick Douglass Institute at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Payne teaches all levels of modern and jazz dance technique, dance kinesiology, and Laban movement analysis. She was the artistic director of Slippery Rock University Dance Theater for twenty years and the Chairperson of the Department of Dance for nine years. Payne received her M.F.A. from The Ohio State University, CMA certification from the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies in New York City, and certification from the management development program for mid-level administrators in higher education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Payne served as an elected board member of the American College Dance Association for the East-Central and Mid-Atlantic North regions from 2012-2020.

At Canada’s National Academy of Dance Education, we love providing insight into the various realms of not only a dancer's training, care and education, but that of their post-secondary aspirations as well. These post-secondary aspirations are not only relevant after dancers have left their school, as dancers' decisions are highly influenced by their dance educators, directors, studio owners and classmates. The role dance educators play in preparing dancers for the future in dance is very important. These aspirations could include everything from career goals, to professional training and education. Today we will gain insight into the hiring process of one of Canada’s Professional Ballet Companies the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Today’s tips will hopefully help guide dance educators as they prepare their dancers for their careers, dance-related or not. We are pleased to welcome the associate artistic director of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet to our program today Ms. Tara Birtwhistle. After graduating from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School in 1991, Ms. Brithwhistle was hired into the Royal Winnipeg Ballet company eventually accepting the role as principal dancer. Birthwhistle holds many accolades including: MacLean’s “One of 100 Young Canadians to Watch”, her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and a Gemini award. Since retiring from the stage, Birtwhistle has been an integral part of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet artistic team. As Associate Artistic Director, Birtwhistle is a member of the senior leadership team, participating in strategic planning with responsibilities including casting, scheduling, development, marketing and overall management of the artistic team.

Mia Michaels is a legendary choreographer and director. She’s best known from her time as a judge and choreographer on So You Think You Can Dance, where her contemporary choreography earned her three Emmy Awards and household-name-level fame. But before Mia became a fan favorite, she had to fight to make a name for herself in the dance industry. On this episode, she talks about the struggle to break into the industry as a “bigger girl,” and says that when the dance world wouldn’t accept her the way she was, she went ahead and created her own world. And it worked! Mia is one of the dance industry’s top choreographers, and she’s pretty much done it all, from working with Madonna (which she hated) to choreographing Celine Dion’s wildly successful A New Day show in Las Vegas (which I obviously made her gush about). Mia has worked with (and “reinvented”) the Radio City Rockettes, choreographed the Broadway show Finding Neverland and the Rock of Ages film (where she became BFF with Tom Cruise), and had a featured role in Step Up Revolution. She just launched Mia Michaels Live, so if you’re a dancer, choreographer, or everyday human looking for inspiration, check it out. Mia’s authenticity and creativity will blow your mind and change your life. Mia and I recorded this episode together in her TriBeCa apartment, where we were joined by her super spunky English bulldog, Lily. (The sound is a little shaky in the first few minutes, but it clears up — and you’ll hear plenty from little Lily along the way!) During our hour together, Mia very honestly talked about everything from her iconic career to how and dealing with criticism when you’re in the public eye to how, at 50 years old, she finally learned to love, embrace, and feel comfortable in her body. Episode Transcript Lindsay: Welcome TFP The Theatrefolk Podcast. I am Lindsay Price, resident playwright for Theatrefolk. Hello. I hope you're well. Thanks for listening. Today I get to talk to a teacher who is going to direct the upcoming premiere of one of my plays. But first, let's do some Theatrefolk news. Craig and I are in the thick of conference season. It's always busy in the fall. It's an important part of having a company like Theatrefolk, to go and meet face-to-face with our customers and with people who we would like to be our customers. It's important to us that people see us as humans. See those two people behind that table? They're the ones the write some of the plays, and work on the web site, and write the blog posts, and do the newsletters, record the podcasts, answer the phones, respond to your emails. We are Theatrefolk, and we want people to know that we do all those above things because we care about being Theatrefolk So, last weekend we were at the Florida Association of Theater Educators conference, a longstanding teacher conference for us. It's one we have a great fondness for because Florida really was the first place where teachers connected to us as a company and as people. The first place that saw us as human beings. For a long time I would travel to Florida to do workshops and premiere plays, because that was the only area that was interested in having anything to do with me. Although, I can't say that I ever really complained about going to Florida in December or in February, just saying. Then, upcoming, this weekend, Craig and I are split in two. I head to the Code conference, Council of Ontario Drama and Dance Educators conference, which is on our home turf, yo. Oh, goodness. Anyway, that's always nice to be able to meet teachers who live and who work near us. And for the first time, Craig is going to the ABCDE conference, in British Columbia. Very excited about that one, as we connect to BC teachers a lot online, but this will be the first time in person. And as much as I love our online presence, sometimes, you need to things face-to-face. Lastly, where oh, where can you find this podcast? We post new episodes every Wednesday at Theatrefolk.com, and on our Facebook page, and Twitter, and you can subscribe to TFP on iTunes. All you have to do is search on the word Theatrefolk. Oh, this is the first in what I hop is many, many, many interviews with teachers. Schools and student performers, that's what we do, that's what we focus on. And I really want it to be an ongoing thing, where we talk to those who are in works and directing our works, and having those kinds of discussions. So this first one, I had the opportunity to sit down with the upcoming director of a new play of mine, Cob Web Dreams, which is an adaption of sorts of A Midsummer Night's Dream. It focuses on one of the minor fairies, Cob Web, and it's going to premiere at an all girl's school, Havergal College in Toronto in May of 2013. And I went into the school at the end of September to do a introductory workshop of sorts with the students, and this chat takes place right after the third day, so as you'll see, both the teacher and I were a little spacey. I'm sure you'll forgive us. Okay. So we'll just sort of ease into this. Ina: Okay.
