The boys return to the story of the first presidential assassination, picking back up with John Wilkes Boothe in the final weeks leading up to the shooting, the possibly scandalous motivations behind the killing, and the story of how his plan evolved from kidnapping to straight up murder. TRASH IN THE CAN: THEY CALL ME MACHO WOMAN This week the boys head to the woods for a tale of grief, empowerment, and John Fetterman wearing a unicorn strap-on. Fiber artist Tessa Morrison joins for Deliverance meets Death Wish, if both movies were shot over a long weekend and scored with a MIDI player. […]
Cooper and Nolan are back in action this week when they cover DEATH WISH 3! This may be the shortest ever episode of this podcast, but when an extremely large portion of this movie is just Charles Bronson killing punks while thousands of completely ineffective bullets fly his way, how much is there to talk about? Still, the near-total absence of meaningful plot elements and characters doesn't stop the guys from covering college nicknames, criminal defense attorneys sleeping with their clients, and whether being invisible would make you a better police officer (stick around to the end to hear that part). At the end of the day it's a Cannon film starring Charles Bronson, so count on having a good time; this episode (featuring not one but TWO beers from Third Moon Brewing) will leave you wishing there was more.
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I dive into something we all might bump-up against: those little "death wish" moments in our lives where we're not taking the best care of ourselves. It all started with a crazy motorcycle ride I witnessed on 93 North, where this kid was weaving in and out of traffic at 120 miles an hour - totally reckless and dangerous! That got me thinking about how we all have our own versions of the ol' "death wish.” Maybe it's ignoring medical advice, continuing unhealthy habits, or not prioritizing our physical and mental well-being. I'm talking about those choices we make that deep down we know aren't serving us.Things like not managing chronic conditions, skipping out on exercise, eating like crap, not getting enough rest, or creating unnecessary financial stress. The real heartbeat of this episode is about having self-awareness and then breaking those patterns. We know that our brains love familiar territory, which is why changing habits can feel so tough. But here's the deal: we have more control than we think!By understanding how our neural pathways work and making small, consistent changes, over time - we can actually rewire our brain and create healthier habits. Pretty cool, right? So, this is an invitation to hit pause and to take a look at the different buckets in your life. Where are you playing it kinda' loose? What small choices are you making now that might make a big impact on your long-term health and happiness down the road? What buckets/areas could use a little bit more of your positive attention? This isn't about judgment - it's about being curious and loving yourself enough to make better choices. Remember, every tiny step counts, and you are totally worth the effort! xoKK'S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Our daily choices can slowly impact our long-term health.• Reckless behavior isn't always dramatic, but even subtle stuff can be dangerous.• The brain naturally prefers familiar patterns.• Small, consistent actions can create new neural pathways in the brain over time.• Self-awareness is the first step to making those meaningful changes.• Resistance is a normal part of the human experience.• Our health involves different buckets - mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual.• Your personal development work affects more than just you.• Compassionate self-reflection is more powerful than harsh self-criticism.• Prioritizing self-care is an act of love.• The Nest - Group Mentoring ProgramBIO:Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Writer, Integrative Change Worker, Coach and Hypnotist. Episode 134: Special guest filmmaker Jason Eisener joins us to revisit DEATH WISH 3 (1985), the gleefully absurd vigilante camp classic from the infamous Cannon Films and starring Charles Bronson. SIGN UP FOR THE OFH PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/onefuckinghour
Will Ashton returns with another Instant Take, this time tackling The Amateur, a new action-thriller starring Rami Malek (Mr. Robot, Bohemian Rhapsody) as a surveillance tech expert turned reluctant vigilante. With a vibe that borrows from Death Wish and Jason Bourne, the film delivers slick set pieces, familiar genre beats, and a central performance that’s more restrained than revolutionary. Will explores how The Amateur flirts with deeper character nuance, particularly in its depiction of Malek’s potentially autistic-coded lead. Though the film never explicitly confirms it, the character’s traits raise questions about representation in action movies and whether the film embraces or falls back on tired tropes. Alongside Malek, the film features a solid supporting cast: Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Laurence Fishburne, John Bernthal, Holt McCallany (Mindhunter), and Julianne Nicholson. Some standout moments include inventive “trap-like” set pieces and moody, high-rise shootouts that pop in premium formats. But Will questions if that’s enough to elevate an otherwise middle-of-the-road revenge thriller. Jimmy Page was in rough shape by the end of Led Zeppelin. His addictions had ravaged his body and he didn't contribute nearly as much to 1979's In Through The Out Door as he did all previous Zeppelin records. After the death of John Bonham, Jimmy fulfilled his obligations to release Coda, provided the soundtrack to Death Wish 2 as a favor to his neighbor and embarked on a brief fundraiser tour with lots of legends - The ARMS Tour. But he hadn't been very creative and wasn't keeping himself in match shape. After spending some time with his Swan Song brother Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company), he concocted a plan to put together a new supergroup for the 80s. WIth Rodgers handling vocal and primary songwriter duties, Jimmy also enlisted Chris Slade (Tom Jones, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, AC/DC, UAWIL #91 guest) and "The Fretless Monster" Tony Franklin who he worked with on Roy Harper's album Whatever Happened to Jugula? This powerful lineup was to be the vehicle that would rejuvenate Jimmy Page and put him back on the road to superstardom. However, Page's contributions weren't what fans had come to expect from the guitar hero and it seemed that Jimmy was a bit out of place in a world dominated by MTV. Single Radioactive was an AOR hit and showcased a bit of what the band could do, ultimately helping their self-titled debut to gold status in the US. But most of the album is uneven and Page isn't showing up with the killer solos that were his calling card. However, Tony Franklin is an absolute monster on this record, filling in the gaps that Page leaves between his flourishes and playing well off the ever steady Slade. While Rodgers vocals are as strong as ever, his songwriting doesn't quite live up to the standard of his previous bands. It was a solid debut which led to a strong sophomore effort in Mean Business (1986) but because it celebrates it's 40th on February 11, 2025, we thought we'd take a hard look at The Firm and why it didn't hit the heights we all hoped it would Check out our new website: Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Visit our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use the code UGLY to save 10%! Time Destroys Everything - Gaspar Noé's Irreversible We're closing in on our two final films in our "Dark Cinema" showcase. This week we look at Gaspar Noé's 2002 controversial and troubling film, Irreversible. Arguably one of the most difficult viewing experiences ever unleashed on movie-watching audiences, Noé's exploration on storytelling (a backwards playing narrative) could have easily been a gimmick with little to say in the way of exploring themes, however Noé deftly handles the obvious showboating of such a technique to add a true, honest, and enlightening understanding of his story of a brutal rape and beating, revenge, mistaken identity, and murder. This is not a film for the easily offended, but it's also not for those looking for the extreme violence and blood-lust of a Death Wish 2 or I Spit on Your Grave. With Irreversible, Noé has crafted a truly powerful and beautifully realized look at violence, sexual violence, and the unfolding of time and it's commentary on the aforementioned. Take a listen and let us know what you think. It's a deep and thoughtful conversation. We continue to be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com. The best one-liners or dialogue, whichever comes first. We reviewed a lot of movies we remembered liking this year. Full episode now on our Patreon. Erik Ellington is an iconic skateboarder who is one of the original members of the Baker Skateboards and Deathwish teams. Ellington, alongside his peers, revolutionized skateboarding with legendary videos like Baker 2G, Baker 3 and The Deathwish Video. These videos presented an unfiltered view of skateboarding at the time with energy that is nearly impossible to replicate. The footage often showed them not just skating, but also fighting, partying, and struggling with the highs and lows of their lives. Ellington has been open about his personal struggles with substance abuse and subsequent sobriety after years of living the lifestyle seen in the videos. His story of positive change and optimism has left deep influence on skateboarders world wide. With involvement in art and design throughout the multiple facets of his life, Ellington was instrumental in developing pro model skate shoes during his time with Emerica and later Supra Footwear. He played a key role in popularizing Baker's classic aesthetic, and as one of Deathwish's creative forces, his vision helped Deathwish become one of the legacy companies within skateboarding. As a natural expression to other interests in his life, he has been designing luxury footwear with Human Recreational Services, as well as working on ‘Ellington', a clothing line which will launch in due time. http://patreon.com/livingproofnewyorkhttp://livingproofnewyork.com

On this week's show, two of our favorite Slate-sters, Nadira Goffe (culture writer) and Dan Kois (author of Hampton Heights), fill in for Dana Stevens and Stephen Metcalf. The trio first pays a visit to Gotham, and reviews Max's The Penguin, an odd, unevenly paced mob show that doubles as DC Comics intellectual property. Sporting a prosthetic face, Colin Farrell reprises his role as the titular character (also known as Oz Cobb) and adds a new layer of humanity to the villainous Penguin. Then, the three discuss Sundance darling My Old Ass, a charming coming-of-age film by writer-director Megan Park, in which teenage Elliot (played by Maisy Stella) meets her future self (Aubrey Plaza) while tripping on shrooms. Finally, the panel tackles Am I The Asshole? and explores the classic Reddit forum's many pleasures. Mentioned in this episode: Colin Farrell's Long Waddle to The Penguin (Isaac Butler, Slate.) In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses Robert Caro's The Power Broker with staff writer Henry Grabar, who in his essay, “Read Another Book,” offers a counterpoint to the weighty tome: maybe it's OK to skip this one. Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Endorsements: Nadira: Sean Wang's film Dìdi; a playlist of metaphorically violent songs, inspired by Charli XCX's “Sympathy is a Knife.” (Also, if anyone has any intel on “Life Is a Death Wish” or Golden Age Ensemble, please reach out!) Dan: Thank Goodness, an extremely funny video game. Available on most gaming platforms. (He also strongly recommends watching this video about the game's developers!) Julia: ColorKu, a vibrant and beautiful puzzle game. Podcast production by Jared Downing. Production assistance by Kat Hong. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
