In this November 2022 episode—remastered with updated context—Mandy Matney dissects one of Dick Harpootlian's most shameful pre-trial stunts: publicly insinuating Curtis "Eddie" Smith of being the "real killer" based on a failed polygraph test. Watch Dick spiral through desperate theories—from Eddie to groundskeepers to anyone but Alex—while Creighton Waters finally fights back against the media manipulation. Learn about the crucial evidence: high-velocity impact spatter, Paul's phone video destroying Alex's alibi, and the timeline that placed Alex at the scene. This episode also tackles Judge Carmen Mullen's alleged abuse of power and captures the moment Dick compared himself to... Abraham Lincoln...?With trial just weeks away, Dick's chaos strategy was in full effect. Spoiler: it didn't work. The jury saw through everything within just a few hours of deliberating. Sarah learned a fun (??) fact about persimmon seeds, and now we have to talk about it. Susie is less impressed, and skeptical about its implications. We hear the history of, wait for it, the Thong Song, and are delighted by the vocal stylings, song construction, and cultural impact of this one-hit-wonder. We learn about an imprint in a piece of cement in Chicago that has become an unlikely tourist attraction, and despite it's connection to things that scurry, Sarah is bewitched. We hear how scholars solved the mystery of what caused it, and we have ideas for how to make the most of it. A man went on a three day retreat into total darkness, and we discuss the strange side effects of this sensory adventure. And we get an update on Susie's secret (totally not secret) crush on her eye doctor.Brain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:Get ten dollars off your first month's subscription and free shipping when you go to https://nutrafol.com and enter the promo code BRAINCANDYThe Brain Candy Podcast is sponsored by BetterHelp. The bizarre, incoherent ‘Star Wars Holiday Special' was broadcast only once, on 17th November, 1978. Despite CBS signing up the stars of the original movie - Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, the plot swapped epic battles for a bizarre variety show filled with cameos from Harvey Korman, Bea Arthur, and Jefferson Starship. The story revolves around Chewbacca's family as celebrate “Life Day” on their home planet, Kashyyyk. George Lucas' initial vision was for a sombre, character-driven tale. But instead, it evolved into a chaotic blend of guest star sketches, dodgy green screens, and musical numbers. Lucas reportedly hated it so much he wished to destroy every copy with a sledgehammer. Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why Fisher ended up singing a new song to the tune of John Williams's Star Wars theme; consider how Disney attempted to scrub the memory of the Special from the Star Wars canon after acquiring Lucasfilm; and contemplate the wisdom of making Wookies - who speak an unintelligible language, with no subtitles - the stars of the show… Further Reading: • ‘The Star Wars Holiday Special: A Retrospective' (Empire, 2009): https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/star-wars-holiday-special/ • ‘Star Wars Holiday Special: Inside the Confusing Christmas Special' (Thrillist, 2017): https://www.thrillist.com/entertainment/nation/star-wars-holiday-special • 'The Star Wars Holiday Special' (CBS, 1978): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxtSX1lg8rE Love the show? In his first-ever podcast interview, Ludovic de Saint Sernin traces the journey from a nomadic childhood to becoming one of fashion's most closely watched voices. He talks about the diary-like beginnings of his brand, the Mapplethorpe collaboration that became a full-circle moment, and why he sometimes becomes his own muse. We explore queerness, visibility, and the tension between intimacy and scale as his label grows, along with how travel, community, and personal history shape his work. He's a designer committed to beauty, honesty, and the freedom to define oneself. If you want to understand the world of LDSS—its sensuality, vulnerability, and conviction—this episode is the essential entry point. “Being contemporary now is being recognized for your uniqueness and cultivating it with audacity and strength, with a community around you that helps you build the message.” - Ludovic de Saint Sernin PS His collection for Zara is available in stores today. Episode Highlights: On names and identity The full name is a mouthful, even in French. LDSS exists so the world can say and recognize it easily while still honoring who he is. On an itinerant childhood Born in Brussels, raised in Abidjan, then dropped into Paris's 16th where labels mattered. It was the shock that taught him how clothes define presentation and power. On finding fashion From sketching landscapes and Disney to sketching clothes in Paris. A mother who spotted the obsession early and sent him to draw, paint, and sew. On family and those legendary road trips Seven siblings across three marriages, languages braided together, summers packed into a car from Brussels to Portugal. A chaotic joy that shaped his sense of community. On travel as fuel Travel began as risk and escape and became a network. Work trips are less sightseeing than people finding. Inspiration now comes from the community he builds city to city. On launching the brand Leaving Balmain, making a first collection alone, putting a diary on the runway, and discovering a business on the fly when buyers immediately placed orders. On message and responsibility Autobiography became brand DNA. The work mirrors his story and holds up a mirror to queer life today, insisting on visibility without losing grace. On Mapplethorpe and making it personal A full circle collaboration treated like a six-month devotion, with hand work by Ludovic himself and the show in New York to honor the photographer's city and spirit. On the designer as muse He steps in front of the camera when the story is intimate and the image needs his body to make sense. Be your own muse as liberation, not vanity. On what is contemporary now Visibility, audacity, community. Cultivating uniqueness with confidence and surrounding yourself with people who help you build the message. In this episode of Run the Numbers, CJ Gustafson sits down with Vanna Krantz, former CFO of Disney+ and Grindr, to explore what it takes to lead finance through massive inflection points. Vanna reflects on building Disney+'s subscription model from scratch under Bob Iger's leadership and the pressure of launching a global product with no precedent. She discusses forecasting as both science and art, and the importance of appreciating high-stakes moments amid chaos. Shifting to Grindr, Vanna breaks down how the company went public with remarkable efficiency—boasting 40% EBITDA margins and under 200 employees—and how she modeled for a user base that consistently churns and returns. She also opens up about career longevity, work-life balance, and helping women find sustainability and acceleration in leadership.—LINKS:Vanna on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vannakrantz/CJ on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cj-gustafson-13140948/Mostly metrics: https://www.mostlymetrics.com—RELATED EPISODES:Monetizing Community Engagement: The Business of Fitness with Strava CFO Lily Yanghttps://youtu.be/zlLb5yZDKQE“Let's Just See What Breaks” — Intuit's CFO on Being a Disruptor When You're Already the Incumbenthttps://youtu.be/Le1D9HXHvGI—TIMESTAMPS:00:00:00 Preview and Intro00:03:02 Sponsors – Aleph, Fidelity Private Shares, and Metronome00:06:09 Meeting at A16z and Disney Plus Discussion00:07:13 Interviewing with Bob Iger and Joining Bamtech Media00:10:43 Forecasting the Unknown at Disney Plus00:13:01 Launch Strategy – Mandalorian and Retention00:15:15 Sponsors – Mercury, RightRev, and Tipalti00:19:23 Forecasting, Retention Curves, and the Art vs. Science Balance00:22:20 Lessons in Art and Science of Finance at Disney00:25:08 Launch Day Chaos and the Disney Plus CDN Outage00:26:24 Celebrating the 10 Million Subscriber Milestone00:27:21 Grindr IPO and Financial Discovery00:32:42 Active User Metrics and Reactivation Trends00:34:29 Seasonality and Human Behavior in App Usage00:36:02 Free vs. Paid Users and Revenue Optimization00:38:21 Pricing Strategy and Global Monetization00:40:23 Women in Leadership and Staying in the Game00:43:30 Work–Life Balance and Career Seasons00:46:12 Wisdom, Experience, and Staying in the Game00:50:08 Finance Stack, Craziest Expense, and Closing Remarks—SPONSORS:Aleph automates 90% of manual, error-prone busywork, so you can focus on the strategic work you were hired to do. Six Flags will attempt to leverage Travis Kelce's 9% investment into a full branding partnership, leaning into ‘the new world.' Meanwhile, Disney's stock dipped 7% after its latest earnings show cable is collapsing faster than expected. Streaming and the parks remain its lifeboat, with both those sectors performing well, underscoring that the company's future lies in IP that monetizes across screens and physical spaces. Finally, Herschend struck a deal to acquire Silverwood Theme Park. Philip and Scott unpack what these moves say about where the industry is heading—fewer ads, smaller screens, bigger personalities, and more mission-driven ownership. Escuchar audio

In this remastered episode from August 2022, producer David Moses reflects on the chaotic period just after Alex Murdaugh was first charged with murdering Maggie and Paul. Looking back from November 2025, after Murdaugh's conviction and two life sentences plus the other 40+ years for financial crimes, Mandy examines how Harpootlian's strategy weaponized every procedural motion to create confusion and control headlines. The episode also marked an amazing milestone: the announcement of Luna Shark's collaboration with YouTuber Eric Allen Daume, who would later help us create the official podcast for Hulu's "Murdaugh: Death and the Family." This remaster proves that despite all the manufactured chaos, truth ultimately prevailed—sunlight really is the best disinfectant.Episode ReferencesSpecial thanks to Eric Alan Daume for capturing audio and video in support of this podcast.
