Breast Implant Illness
Episode 78: The Hidden Impact of Environmental Toxins on Women's Health with Dr. Betty Murray

Breast Implant Illness

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2024 40:35

As women age and enter the perimenopause stage, they undergo many physiological changes, including significant hormonal fluctuations that can impact their overall health. That's why there's a need for us to understand the interplay between hormonal shifts and the symptoms associated with breast implants. By exploring more about this connection, we can develop more effective strategies for managing and alleviating the symptoms of breast implant illness. Today, we are joined by Dr. Betty Murray, a renowned women's health advocate, and a certified Functional Medicine Practitioner. Through her PhD research, she identified key factors contributing to hormone and metabolic imbalances in women over 40. So make sure to tune in to this episode and gain valuable insights from her extensive expertise, which can offer practical solutions and guidance for navigating health challenges in this stage of life. Perimenopause and Breast Implant Illness, Hormone Disruption, and Inflammatory Testing Many women experience breast implant illness alongside perimenopause due to overlapping age ranges and hormonal changes during this period. Perimenopause often begins around age 42 and can last for an average of eight years, although symptoms can start earlier and last longer for some women. This involves significant hormonal fluctuations that can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and mood swings. When women with breast implants reach the perimenopausal stage, they may attribute their symptoms solely to breast implant illness, even though perimenopause may also play a significant role. Inflammatory conditions like breast implant illness can exacerbate hormonal imbalances by suppressing normal hormone function. Chronic inflammation, including autoimmune conditions and other medical device-related issues, can also significantly impact hormone levels and overall well-being. Unfortunately, conventional medicine often overlooks the connection between inflammation and hormonal imbalance, leaving many women without comprehensive care. Moreover, while traditional tests such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and sedimentation rates can indicate chronic inflammation, they are nonspecific and do not pinpoint the exact cause. Addressing inflammation holistically, alongside hormone management, can help alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life for women dealing with both perimenopause and breast implant illness. Integrating lifestyle changes such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management can further enhance overall well-being and support recovery. Environmental Toxicity, Mold Exposure, and Its Effects on Human Health Understanding an individual's genetic detoxification capabilities is crucial in assessing their toxicity burden, which includes exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, heavy metals, and mold. Mold exposure, especially common in areas with heavy rain, can significantly impact hormonal and endocrine systems, causing severe health issues. Dr. Murray notes that environmental toxins are at unprecedented levels and our bodies struggle to manage them, as they have to be processed by the liver similarly to internal toxins. It must be emphasized that toxins can affect health even in remote areas, as shown by research in Antarctica. Mold, in particular, disrupts the hypothalamic control of hormones and can lead to chronic illness, which can be challenging to diagnose. Advanced testing for toxins and mold is crucial for accurately diagnosing and managing chronic health issues. These tests help pinpoint the exact nature of toxic exposure, enabling more targeted and effective treatment strategies. By understanding the specific toxins and mold present, healthcare providers can develop personalized detoxification and remediation plans, significantly improving patient outcomes and addressing the root causes of chronic symptoms that might otherwise go undetected. Hormone Imbalance and Its Impact on Women's Health, Including Thyroid Issues, Adrenal Fatigue, and Menopause Hormone imbalances, such as thyroid issues, adrenal fatigue, and menopause, are often more common than people realize. Many patients with symptoms like facial swelling and persistent fatigue mistakenly attribute their problems to thyroid dysfunction, when the root cause could be mold toxicity or other environmental factors. This misunderstanding can hinder effective treatment, as addressing these underlying toxins frequently resolves hormonal imbalances. Moreover, high stress levels and inadequate recovery further complicate hormonal health, impacting thyroid function, cortisol levels, and overall endocrine balance. Comprehensive testing for toxins and mold, combined with managing stress and improving lifestyle habits, is crucial for effectively tackling these complex health issues. How to Improve Sleep Quality by Reducing Exposure to Toxins and Optimizing Hormone Levels Improving sleep quality requires a proactive approach to both reducing exposure to toxins and optimizing hormone levels. One key strategy is to create a sleep-friendly environment by keeping the bedroom dark, cool, and free from electronic distractions. Additionally, it's important to finish eating your last meal well before bedtime to allow for proper digestion, as eating late can disrupt sleep. Avoiding alcohol and late-night snacking further contributes to uninterrupted rest, enhancing sleep quality. Addressing environmental toxins is also essential for better sleep and overall health. Many commonly used pesticides and herbicides act as endocrine disruptors, which can interfere with hormonal balance. To minimize exposure, choose organic fruits and vegetables, particularly those that are not peeled, and opt for organic animal proteins and dairy products. Reducing reliance on plastics by using glass containers for food and beverages can help avoid harmful chemicals often found in plastic products. Incorporating small, consistent changes into your routine can have a significant impact on your health. Improving food quality, enhancing air quality, and adopting practices like intermittent fasting can all contribute to better sleep and hormone regulation. These adjustments, combined with appropriate supplementation if needed, can help reduce inflammation, support hormonal balance, and improve overall well-being, leading to more restorative and effective sleep. Using Wearable Technology to Monitor and Improve Sleep To enhance recovery, prioritizing sleep quality is crucial, as the body's ability to detoxify and heal is intimately linked to restorative rest. The process of detoxification begins at the cellular level before being processed by the liver, making it essential to support every cell in the body. To effectively monitor and improve sleep quality, wearable technology such as Ultrahuman Ring or Whoop can be invaluable. These provide detailed insights into sleep patterns, including the duration and quality of deep sleep, which is vital for recovery. Accurate data helps individuals understand their sleep needs and identify areas for improvement, such as achieving an optimal balance of sleep stages. Women, particularly those in perimenopause or menopause, often face challenges in maintaining adequate deep sleep, which can be shorter and less restorative compared to men. Hormonal disruptions during these stages can further complicate achieving sufficient deep sleep, which is crucial for growth hormone release and overall recovery. By utilizing wearable technology, individuals can track their sleep metrics more precisely and address issues affecting their rest. For instance, a cancer patient's low heart rate variability and minimal deep sleep highlighted the need for targeted interventions to improve sleep quality and recovery outcomes. To optimize recovery, it's essential to focus on both the quantity and quality of sleep. Effective sleep strategies include reducing exposure to disruptions, such as noise and light, and managing stress levels. Incorporating supportive measures like hyperbaric oxygen therapy, lymphatic massage, and proper nutrition can also complement efforts to enhance sleep. However, without sufficient deep sleep, these interventions alone may not be enough. And so, using wearable technology to monitor and adjust sleep patterns remains a key component in achieving optimal recovery and overall health. Sleep Problems and Their Impact on Women's Health Many women struggle to achieve deep sleep, which is crucial for memory consolidation and emotional processing. Deep sleep helps store short-term memories, akin to organizing information in filing cabinets, making it essential for cognitive health. When women experience disruptions in deep sleep, such as during perimenopause or menopause, it can lead to increased anxiety and depression, as REM sleep, which processes emotions, is also affected. Sleep problems can also be linked to underlying conditions like obstructive sleep apnea or upper airway resistance. While snoring is a common sign, issues such as narrow airways can go undiagnosed, leading to poor sleep quality and an increased risk of cognitive decline. Individuals with persistent sleep issues should consider undergoing a sleep study to identify and address potential problems, as untreated sleep disorders can contribute to serious health issues, including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. Overall, addressing sleep quality is crucial for overall health, particularly in managing cognitive and emotional well-being. For those with chronic sleep disturbances, exploring potential underlying conditions and seeking appropriate treatment can significantly improve both sleep quality and overall health outcomes. What does it mean to be sensitive when we live in a toxic environment? How do we navigate the difference between taking responsibility and assuaging our guilt? Between resisting injustice and coping with it? And how do we reckon with what's happening in the world when no one wants to talk about it? There is no question that toxins in the environment interact negatively with our bodies. Dr. Caroline Smythe joins us on today's episode to explain how that occurs and what a person can do in defense. Dr. Smythe is a board certified psychiatrist who practices root-cause psychiatry in Charleston, SC. She believes that the balance of the body’s systems is vital to the balance of one’s mental health and well-being, and what happens in your gut, adrenals, and with your immune system can affect your mood and anxiety level. In her words, "Treating merely one's symptoms can result in only a modest benefit, and can often be an approach that requires treatment indefinitely. However, getting to the root cause and treating the underlying imbalances will oftentimes result in a steady improvement in multiple areas simultaneously." Today's episode is full of resources. About My Guest: My guest for this episode is Dr. Ann Shippy. Ann Shippy, MD is a physician, scientist, engineer, and mom who works with science, clinical data, and research to provide the knowledge and tools needed to achieve optimal health. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and certified in Functional Medicine. She holds a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Texas, a Master of Science in Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She uses cutting-edge science, innovative testing, research and genetic information to determine and address the root causes of health issues – not to simply treat the symptoms of illness. She approaches each patient as a whole person and forms a therapeutic partnership to achieve the highest standard of health. Her approach to medicine is a unique blend of measured, precise data with a heart-felt and sympathetic attitude towards all of her patients. This method stems from her engineering background and her own failed experience as a patient of traditional medicine. She treats patients suffering from any combination of physical, environmental, or genetic issues. Her hope is to contribute to and inspire a positive movement towards solving some of the more complex health challenges we face today – and to help create a world where everyone has the opportunity for wellness. Key Takeaways: - How important are genes in recovering from chronic health challenges? - How can toxin introduction into the body be limited? - How is glyphosate toxicity approached and what role might glycine play? - How important are heavy metals in those with chronic health challenges? - Should metal detoxification be aggressively approached or are gentle methods often better? - What are some of the questions that might be asked when considering the potential for mold in the environment? - How often does remediation work for her patients? - What is the difference between mold allergy and mold biotoxin illness? - What tests might be used to explore for the potential of exposure to water-damaged buildings? - What is the connection between yeast overgrowth and mold exposure? - Can mold exposure from water-damaged buildings lead to colonization in the body? - What are the key steps in recovering someone from environmental illness? - What role might sauna therapy, coffee enemas, and HBOT play in patient protocols? - What are the triggers for hair loss in environmental illness? - What are some tools that can help with supporting the parasympathetic nervous system? This podcast is the second part of a series. In the first part, Dr. Shaw and I talked about how to measure metabolism using organic acids. My initial test showed two major problems: yeast and clostridia overgrowth. It’s been about six months since I took probiotics and Raintree Formulas Amazon antifungals for two months and the retest shows some but not complete improvement. The primary focus of this interview is the new Great Plains test for organic (nonmetal) environmental toxicity, something that I think may be a problem for the people that work with us. I won’t know for sure until we collect some more data, as always I like to test myself before recommending others do the same, and my result turned out to be “one of the cleanest Dr. Shaw has ever seen.” The possible exception is a mild elevation of 2-Hydroxyisobutyric and other metabolites that indicate exposure to petrochemicals I suspect from riding my bike on the road. Did you know? For personal care products, the European Union have banned 1,400 chemicals, Canada 600, and the US just 11. Do you think the FDA is safety testing your personal care products? They don’t. If someone asked Dr. Walsh, “what is the most important thing to for your health other than being positive and happy,” it would be that you absolutely have to get toxic chemicals out of your life. There is a growing body of evidence that chemicals in our environment are contributing to to cancer, autoimmune disease, allergies and asthma, obesity, hormone issues, and more. She firmly believes this is one of the largest contributing factors to the plague of diseases we are facing today. Women, in particular, seem to be extremely vulnerable because of all of the personal care and cleaning products they come in contact with on a daily basis. Listen to this podcast and Dr. Walsh will show you how easy it is to get the chemicals out of your life while still feeling, looking, (and smelling) fantastic. Julie Walsh is a Naturopathic Doctor & Mom of four adorable blue eyed kids. She knows a few things about health. Part of this is due to a formal medical education, but most can be attributed to her personal 20 year quest (or obsession) for "perfect health". It wasn't until she learned that perfection is the antithesis of health that I was actually able to help herself and other women achieve true well-being.   Heidi Carabine founded Families for Autism and Immune Recovery (FAIR), after her many years of first-hand experience with both her son's Autism and the pain of having a complex immune disorder herself that doctors are still seeking to understand. She has invested 14 plus years in the Autism Arena as a spokesperson for Autism, Autoimmune Disorders and Environmental Toxicity. During these years, she has networked with doctors and the public in these areas: marketing medical and health care related services, consulting and managing an integrative medical practice, volunteering for several Autism Foundations, mentoring other families with Autistic children and studying immune issues to determine better and innovative ways to assist her son and others to give them the best quality life possible. In the past year, she organized Autism Fest Austin (AFA), a collaborative event that brought together four Texas based non-profits and highlighted services and information for the autism community. Currently Heidi is serving on the board for (AIM) An Independent Me, an Austin based nonprofit focused on the co-op housing environment for adults on the spectrum. She is also on the Parent Panel Board for (ATUSA) Autism Trust USA. Her son Collin brought her into the world of autism when he was diagnosed at a young age. Since then she has become a self-proclaimed “Mother Warrior' and is also looking to make strides for Autism research and awareness.

Brita Belli, editor of E / The Environmental Magazine- the largest independent magazine dedicated to green issues- joins us on Go Green Radio to discuss her recent piece called, “The Search for Autism's Missing Piece…Autism Research Slowly Turns Its Focus to Environmental Toxicity.” The debate over the connection between vaccinations—particularly those preserved with mercury-containing thimerosal—and autism has been widely publicized, and is still the subject of controversy. But the large majority of autism research is focused on genetics, despite the fact that there are known environmental factors that impact the likelihood of the disorder. Sudhir Gupta, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of the Division of Basic and Clinical Immunology at the University of California, Irvine, once famously remarked in regards to autism: “Genes load the gun and environment pulls the trigger.” Tune in to Go Green Radio to learn more, and visit http://www.emagazine.com/view/?4984 to read Brita's groundbreaking article.
