After 10 years of searching for the right support to enable Jen to follow her dreams, Jen and Sue Blackwell (Daughter and Mum) co-created DanceSyndrome in 2009, where everyone matters and all are encouraged to lead happy, healthy and purposeful lives. DanceSyndrome is for people with and without Down's syndrome and other learning disabilities, using inclusive dance as a vehicle in a unique, ground-breaking way which doesn't exist anywhere else. Jen, Sue, and DanceSyndrome are international multi-award-winning leaders of change, disrupting the status quo and challenging perceptions and systems where necessary. They show everyone the art of the possible, whatever label or perceived ability we attach to ourselves or others, by taking one step at a time. Jen was born with Down's syndrome and says, “With the right support at the right time we can go further and further”In this special episode you will hear the voices of three women: Jen Blackwell, Sue Blackwell, and Tracey-Jane Hughes, who restated some questions for Jen. Jen and Sue discuss creating DanceSyndrome and their experiences showcasing the performances of this dance company… facing and overcoming the bureaucracy and systems that saw Jen as a learning disability instead of as a person… the importance of true inclusion rather than tokenistic inclusion to enable everyone to be a leader in their own life… Jen's love of dance throughout her life… being honored at Buckingham Palace…. Jen being appointed Lead Ambassador for Innovation and Entrepreneurship by the High Sheriff of Manchester for her year of tenure in 2018.… encouraging all women and girls to speak out and speak up… and the importance of creating opportunities for all! The property on which the Joshua Ward House sits in Salem, Massachusetts was once the home of George Corwin in 1692. George Corwin was the High Sheriff during the witch trials of that time period. Although with being a sheriff he was also a sadist man who loved to torture others. Listen to this week's episode as we dive deeper into the haunted property and this man. Also, we almost burn out mouths off with a jalapeno at the time of the episode by mistake. In recent podcasts, we have talked a lot about ESG, and the corporate responsibilities companies must take into account in their day-to-day working. The ways in which consumers view companies has changed dramatically over the last two decades, and corporate reputation is more important than ever, and reputations and brands are scrutinized than ever before. To help us unpack the importance of corporate reputation, as well as the risks companies can incur by not upholding a positive reputation, we are honoured to be joined by Rupert Younger.Rupert Younger is the founder and director of Oxford University's Centre for Corporate Reputation and co-author of two books - The Reputation Game and The Activist Manifesto. This month we welcome old friend of the museum, Mr Bill Jackson to the podcast. Born in Hereford, and founder and chairman of Jackson Property, Bill cut his military teeth with the Lucton School Combined Cadet Force and shares he reminiscences of troop trains to summer camps, bulling boots and progress to the dizzying height of Colour Sergeant. Poached by Colonel Tom Hill, Bill then became an officer cadet with the Herefordshire Light Infantry, responsible for a platoon across Leominster, Kington and Tenbury Wells. We hear of of his experiences in getting to know his men - many of whom had seen national service in Kenya - mess dinners, regimental balls and being allocated his own transport in the form of a Champ!Bill was given the honour to carry one of the Regimental Colours in the disbandment parade at Hereford Cathedral in 1967 and he relates his experiences of that momentous and poignant day. However this was not Bill's end of his connection with volunteer units in the county - being a driving force in the Army Cadet league, Chair of the Trustees of the Museum and being "on parade" again as High Sherriff with his old platoon sergeant, Mick Meredith who was Sergeant-at-Arms for Leominster Town Council. We really enjoyed chatting to Bill and hope you enjoy listening to our conversation. Craig Price was only 13 when he committed his first murder in 1987. Two years later at the age of 15 he committed three additional murders. This particular case is among those the most horrific to have taken place in the state of Rhode Island. It t is a case that I am familiar with since in my previous capacity as High Sheriff of Providence County I had met Price. I was responsible for courtroom security during his trial, and all trials during my tenure as the High Sheriff. Price became the youngest serial murderer in American history.

George Corwin, the High Sheriff of Essex County, played a major role in the Salem Witch Trials. Spoiler alert: it wasn't a good role. Now, his soul, and the souls of his victims, haunt the house built on the land he owned.

Chairman of internationally-renowned Beaverbook's the Jewellers, High Sheriff of Greater Manchester 2019/20, Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, and trustee and supporter to some of the country's most impactful and influential organisations, Mark's passion for philanthropy and his drive to help others is infectious. Awarded the OBE in 2015 for ‘Services to Business and Charity in the North of England', Mark's impressive portfolio of achievements also include his tenure as Board Member, former Chairman, and current Honorary Patron of The Fed. With a legacy of giving that is almost unmatched in corporate circles, Mark's leadership and development of Beaverbook's charitable endeavours has seen the business donate more than £16 million to various charities since 2000. In a wide-ranging conversation, Mark reveals the force behind his ambition, his belief in the importance of organisational sustainability, why inculcating a culture of charity within a business benefits not just the beneficiaries but the business itself in the long term, and why engaging the younger members of a community in charitable work is so essential – and, of course, how The Fed has impacted his life.

AL sits down with High Sheriff of Shropshire, Dean Harris for the last time in her role. This episode is bittersweet yes we get to discuss the amazing journey that Dean Harris has been on this year, but we also have to say goodbye to her as High Sheriff. However, I believe that the influence that Dean has had across the county will live long in the memory. Not only has she worked unbelievably hard to raise awareness in a number of fields and goals that were set at the beginning of her term, but there are a lot of young women out there for whom, I think Dean is a fantastic role model. All of this was achieved during lockdown....incredible! This is not a goodbye, it is a see you soon, without the fancy hat. Well done Mrs Harris and thank you for being awesome!
Mary Clare Rodwell is the current High Sheriff of Somerset. After living in Somerset for nearly 30 years, her longstanding contribution to the community here resulted in being selected for the role, which dates back to at least the 11th century. However, days after she was officially appointed by the Queen, the country was put into lockdown, meaning that her time as Sheriff has been a truly unique opportunity to look at how the county has responded and adapted to the challenges of 2020. We met a few days before Christmas to reflect on a huge variety of topics, from the history of the area, to mental health in Somerset.
Today's show takes us to Whitchurch and the amazing business that is Landfill Angels. A business ran by Mother and Daughter Sharon and Chloe, that offers a new lease of life to furniture that may have ended up in the skip otherwise. We talk about how the business became what it is today, how Sharon and Chloe manage to work together, the importance of inter-generational working relationships and how Landfill Angels give back to the community. "This show was put together by our awesome High Sheriff, Dean Harris and I am so glad it was! There is something really genuinely beautiful about this episode. I find the idea of giving a battered old piece of furniture a new look, life or purpose to be really quite rewarding. Sharon and Chloe were so interesting to talk to, especially how paint...literally paint has not only helped them survive the pandemic but prosper! If I'm ever in Whitchurch I will be sure to pop in and say hello guys" - AL PHOTO CREDIT: Lisa Farebrother, The Shrewsbury River Loop which you can find on the floor outside the Old Market Hall in town.

Andrew Horncastle on the habits and beliefs that have changed his life Andrew Horncastle, a recent guest on The Pig Wrestling podcast, is a highly successful property entrepreneur, and his unique insights and views on running a business have positioned him perfectly for business growth and prominence. He has a record of delivering many projects affordably and often ahead of time, with his business ideology powering him on to the precise requirements provided by a demanding clientele. As the High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire, you need a certain level of discipline. Andrew's achievements have also driven him to an MBE, and as a founding member of For Entrepreneurs Only, there is no end to his achievements in sight. In Andrew's recent appearance on the podcast, he was very candid about what habits he has adopted to change the way he works for the better. The first of these was avoiding the news. Andrew said he is "definitely a happier person" without watching the news, partially because of the nature of the 24-hour news cycle. He discussed getting engulfed in the news and the fact that most of it can tend to be negative. Of course, the bad news is what sells, so you can find yourself struggling to live in the moment because of the deeply negative way the world is presented. Another habit that Horncastle picked up is "being more careful with my [Andrew's] diet" following bowel issues. With a proper personal trainer, Andrew was able to focus on getting his body into the best possible condition, and of course, a healthy body means a healthy mind. This, along with making sure "you can fit into your life what you need to fit into your life", gives you the ideal combination of productive work life and happy home life. Getting in the best physical and mental space possible opened up a world of opportunities that would have been missed had this not become a focus. You can hear more about this topic and many more by listening to Andrew Hardcastle's recent appearance on The Pig Wrestling Podcast. Andrew has an inspiring story, and his advice could be life-changing. Sponsored by: Moodbeam, Hopen, Talk suicide Powered By: Think Cloud

This is the first Podcast of Both Sides Of The Medication Cart. We, the directors, Bill and Kate Rodgers, each have 35 years' experience working in theatre as actors, directors, writers, facilitators and mental health advocates. Together we have performed in 29 countries; promoting good mental health through theatre. For the past 5 years we have worked with people in our local Lincolnshire community here in the UK; all of whom have lived experience of mental illness and the everyday challenges they face. Through theatre workshops we have developed a theatre company for services users and people with mental health challenges called Stepping Stone Theatre For Mental Health. Together we have created several testimonial plays which have been written by our members. Our members have then performed these shows at the local Arts Centre, Gainsborough and other venues, such as mental health conferences and mental health groups in and round the Greater Lincolnshire area. All our shows have received great accolades and feedback from the general public and health professionals alike. So much so we are now a multi award winning community group. We have received the High Sheriff of Lincolnshire award for services to well being in the community, the West Lindsey Council Well Being in the Community Award and the Small Charity Big Impact Award in the East Midlands Charities Awards. https://www.steppingstonetheatre.co.uk This all came about because Kate has an extensive history of mental health problems, including bipolar, anxiety, psychos and sometimes severe depression. She has had these symptoms for the last 30 years. Bill is her husband and sometimes, when needed, carer. Together they fill a much needed gap in their field. Someone to speak not only for the sufferer of mental health issues but also we need to hear the voice of the carer. Who, in Bill's case, has had a lot to learn and understand. This is where our stories will come form. The voice of lived experience, from "Both Sides Of The Medication Cart". Please sit back, take off your shoes, grab a cuppa tea and join Kate and Bill as we share our open, often witty, wry and frank stories "From Both Sides Of The Medication Cart".

Failing is important because it teaches us how to go about things. It’s through failure that we learn the greatest lessons that life could teach us. Most people dread failure as it will take you on a journey that isn't your goal. But, the reality of the situation is that the journey of failure will only help to mold and shape you into a better person. Failure is only a word that means you have produced some other result instead of your original goal. It's ok to fail and if you fail, fail forward. Find the right support When obstacles arise, we sometimes need a little help keeping our goals in perspective. If you are ever overwhelmed or struggling, your support network should be willing to help you and offer their guidance, insight and strategies for success. Build a network of people you can trust and look to for guidance. Cultivating and maintaining a network can help you achieve success. By providing the encouragement that you need to meet each challenge with determination and a positive attitude, the right support will help you learn from your failures and celebrate your success. The ability to infuse energy, passion, commitment, and connection to an organization's mission and direction is essential in any growing company. A leader is deeply committed to their people. The leader must demonstrate this commitment and passion in every meeting, presentation, and in how they handle problems. The leader's behavior must inspire employees to act in the same way. No one follows a leader just because they are. People follow a leader for thefor their qualities. The most inspirational leaders ignite a spark within their employees and followers that move them to action and not by words. Syncify An app that lets you be social at a distance. AL and Julie speak to the High Sheriff of Shropshire Mrs Dean Harris. Not knowing much about the role, we find out what a High Sheriff is now and how duties have changed over the last 1100 years. Mrs Harris' first month of being the High Sheriff hasn't exactly been textbook to say the least. But that in no way means that things aren't going to get done! Trying to raise the profile of the county and the role of High Sheriff itself, Mrs Harris has set plans in motion to do her best to raise awareness in places that she feels we will all benefit. We give some special shout-outs to people that are doing some amazing things for the community right now too.

On June 2nd, 1831, workers in the Welsh town of Merthyr Tydfil marched on the Castle Inn, where local bosses and magistrates were meeting with the High Sheriff of Glamorgan. Workers demanded a reduction in the price of bread and an increase in wages. When their demands were rejected, they attacked the inn, rioted, and took over the town, marching under a red flag. It took the 93rd (Highland) Regiment over a week to restore the status quo. The rebellion later came to be known as the Merthyr Rising.

The North East of England's Case for Culture is a bold plan to raise £300 million for art projects. Instead of being an adjunct to development culture is seen as the key to the region's redevelopment. But only a few years ago Newcastle cut its arts budget entirely. Organisations are exploring new ways of working. Jim Beirne of Live Theatre takes John Wilson to the pub the theatre runs, the profits of which pay for a new play every year. It also owns restaurants and prime office space, to fund its theatre and outreach projects. The Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell has just launched a new organisation, Magnetic North East, to foster the identity, music and traditions of the North East. It has released an album of songs and tunes, new and old, about the River Tyne, by artists ranging from Jimmy Nail to the Unthanks. Last Friday it held a grand concert in the region's village hall - Auditorium One of The Sage, featuring famous North East artists such as Paul Smith of the band Maximo Park, young folk musicians and a host of children giving a world premiere of a work by David Almond.Kathryn Tickell, John Mowbray - the High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear, and a prime mover in the Case for Culture, David Almond, who wrote Skellig, the Olivier Award winning playwright, Shelagh Stephenson, whose new play is set in her hometown of Tynemouth, all contribute to John Wilson's exploration, as he rambles around Newcastle, of the role of art in the regeneration of the North East of England.Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Julian May.
