A nationwide survey of local governments by Kyodo News on the 13th revealed that 329 workplaces where disabled people could gain skills and knowledge while working were closed nationwide between March and July of this year, resulting in at least 5,000 disabled people who worked there being fired or quitting. The highest number of disabled people ever fired in a year was about 4,000. Although this includes retirees, this is an unprecedented number in just five months. "The work was far from professional agriculture, and most of the time was spent on breaks. If there was a harvest, I would do it, but there were days when I just watered the crop. In those cases, it only took about 30 minutes, and I had five or six hours of free time. Some people were on their cell phones or listening to music, and had a lot of free time. They told me that 'coming to the farm is your job.'" Ralph welcomes award-winning foreign correspondent Stephen Kinzer to discuss America's bloody history of proxy wars. They'll also discuss the mainstream media's "shameful" coverage of the war in Ukraine, the warhawks on Capitol Hill, and the catastrophic trickle-down effects of American military meddling.Stephen Kinzer is an award-winning foreign correspondent who has covered more than 50 countries on five continents. Mr. Kinzer spent more than 20 years working for the New York Times, most of it as a foreign correspondent. After leaving the Times in 2005, Mr. Kinzer taught journalism, political science, and international relations at Northwestern University and Boston University. He is now a Senior Fellow at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University and writes a world affairs column for The Boston Globe. We attacked Libya in complete violation of international law, but in accordance with the system that we have used as a substitute for international law. And that's what we call the “rules-based international order.” That's our alternative to international law. And the rules-based international order is great for us because we're the ones that make the rules. We decide everything. We decide who's making war, who's not making war, who's good, who's bad, who needs to be punished, who doesn't need to be punished. Under international law, we can't do that because countries are treated more equally. So I think this is the real way we have turned away from both international law and our own domestic law—we've said that they're all superseded by the rules-based international order, which is a nice way of saying everybody has to do what the United States decides.Stephen KinzerA mantra in Congress is “Israel has a right to defend itself.” But no one ever says in Congress “the Palestinians have a right to defend themselves,” and they take casualty counts anywhere from 40 to 100 times greater in terms of innocent civilians, killed or injured. The Iranians apparently have no right to defend themselves… What is this inverted sense that these countries that are legitimately threatened, that have been overthrown… What's this mindset in official Washington that nobody threatened by the US or Israel has a right to defend themselves?Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantis1. On Monday, the Writers' Guild of America announced that they have reached an interim agreement with the studios. The proposed deal includes minimum writing room sizes, pay increases, a ban on writing by generative AI programs, and disclosures of streaming numbers with residuals to match, to name just a few of the top line wins for the union. The agreement still needs to be formally submitted to the Guild membership for ratification, but this marks the end of the second longest strike in the WGA's history.2. AP reports that earlier this week, President Biden joined the United Autoworkers on the picket line. This is the first time ever a sitting president has joined a picket line. “Donning a union ballcap and exchanging fist bumps, Biden told United Auto Workers strikers that ‘you deserve the significant raise you need'” and urged the workers to “stick with it.” Biden made this move in part because former President Donald Trump also addressed autoworkers in a speech this week, though he did so at a non-union plant away from the picket line. UAW president Shawn Fain deemed Trump's address to non-union workers “pathetic irony,” per FOX 2 Detroit.3. Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey is facing a mammoth corruption scandal involving fraudulent halal meat from Egypt and $100,000 worth of gold bars. Per the BBC, Menendez has been forced to resign his chairmanship of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Yet, the powerful New Jersey Senator has not resigned his seat, even as a growing chorus of top Democrats have called on him to do so – including New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, Nancy Pelosi, Bernie Sanders, and many more. One possible upside to all of this is that Menendez's departure from his post on the Foreign Relations Committee could pave the way for a more rational American policy towards Cuba.4. In more Cuba news, NBC reports that on September 24th, the Cuban embassy in Washington was attacked. The assailant hurled two molotov cocktails at the diplomatic mission; fortunately, the diplomatic staff were unharmed. No arrests have been made. This follows a 2020 attack, when a man shot “nearly three dozen rounds” at the embassy from an AK-47.5. CNN reports that the FTC and the attorneys general of 17 states have filed a lawsuit against Amazon, alleging that “Amazon unfairly promotes its own platform and services at the expense of third-party sellers who rely on the company's e-commerce marketplace for distribution.” Specific examples of the e-commerce giant's anticompetitive practices include “requiring sellers on its platform to purchase Amazon's in-house logistics services in order to secure the best seller benefits, [and forcing] sellers to list their products on Amazon at the lowest prices anywhere on the web, instead of allowing sellers to offer their products at competing marketplaces for a lower price.” Hopefully, this reinvigorated consumer protection regime will serve as a deterrent to other would-be corporate criminals.6. Kyodo News reports Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki recently addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, and used the opportunity to rail against the proposed US military base in the Japanese-controlled territory. Tamaki noted that the base “was clearly opposed by Okinawan voters in a democratically held referendum" and that the installation of the base would threaten regional peace. Okinawa already hosts most of the American military presence in Japan.7. Variety reports that Anil Kapoor, an A-list actor in India, has won his legal battle against AI. The court “granted an order…acknowledging [Kapoor's] personality rights and restraining all offenders from misusing his personality attributes without his permission in any manner…across all modes and media worldwide.” Kapoor also noted that “My intention is not to interfere with anyone's freedom of expression or to penalize anyone. My intent was to seek protection of my personality rights and prevent any misuse for commercial gains, particularly in the current scenario with rapid changes in technology and tools like artificial intelligence.”8. Finally, the Orchard reports that On September 22nd, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy addressed the Canadian House of Commons. In attendance was Yaroslav Hunka, a 98 year-old veteran who, according to the CBC “fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians during the Second World War.” Students of history quickly put two and two together, deducing that this “veteran” was in fact a soldier in the 14th Grenadier Division of the Waffen SS, otherwise known as the Galician Division. Prime Minister Trudeau also held a private audience with this Nazi. Uproar in Canada proved so great that the Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons, Anthony Rota, was forced to resign, per the CBC. Furthermore, Polish officials have now formally requested that Hunka be extradited to Poland to face charges for atrocities committed by the Galician SS Division during WWII. Japanese firms have been using proxy agencies to employ disabled people, hiring them to work for unrelated farming schemes in a move seen as a way to fulfill official disability quotas, a welfare ministry probe and a Kyodo News investigation found. Disability advocates criticized the practice, with both houses of parliament requesting when the law was amended in December that the government consider asking businesses to not use the proxy agencies. The money was supposed to be COVID-19 assistance for low-income households in a small Japanese town, but it was mistakenly wired to a bank account of a resident who refused to return it and spent most of it on online gambling, police said. Sho Taguchi, a 24-year-old jobless resident in the town of Abu in western Japan, was arrested on Wednesday, Yamaguchi prefectural police said. Police said Thursday he admitted to spending most of the 46.3 million yen ($360,000) of taxpayers' money on gambling. According to Kyodo News agency, only 68,000 yen ($530) is left in his bank account after he withdrew the money 34 times in just over 10 days after the town made the mistake. He's being held on suspicion of computer fraud. Taguchi had allegedly refused the town request to return the money, police said. The funds were COVID-19 subsidies that were deposited into his bank account in April. Each of the 463 low-income households in Abu, population 3,372, was supposed to receive 100,000 yen ($780). But a town official mistakenly submitted to a financial institution a single transfer request of the total amount to Taguchi, whose name was the first on the list of recipients, Kyodo News reported. Town officials are separately investigating how the erroneous transfer went through unnoticed, a mistake that has triggered a wave of criticism from residents. Abu Mayor Norihiko Hanada on Thursday told reporters that the arrest is a step toward tracing the money and hoped it is recovered in full. Taguchi's arrest was based on his alleged transfer of 4 million yen ($31,300) of the town money paid into an account believed to be an online gambling site. Police declined to say how much of the money he actually gambled away, though he told them it was most of it. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Today is a very special milestone, as we have reached the 100th episode of the Cutting Edge Japan Business Show. It is nearly two years now since we started. In the show, I bring the power of the Dale Carnegie Training curriculum to bear on the tough issues we all face. I add in my own experiences in business here, hard earned over the last thirty three years. I have made plenty of mistakes and I hope I can be a guide for you, so you can avoid them in your case. There have been other business shows set in Japan in the past, which I used to enjoy, but one by one they have all faded away. I am glad that my own show has continued. On this special occasion we need something special to go with it. We will send to you, no matter where you are located on the planet, a copy of my new book Japan Business Mastery. We will be giving away twenty copies and here is how you get one. If you are happy for me to quote it please leave an email comment at greg.story@dalecarnegie.comand the twenty most insightful comments on the show will be rewarded with a copy of my new book. I will reach out to those selected, asking you for your best postal mailing address, so we can send you the book by airmail. Those who enjoy listening to podcasts will be happy to know you can now access all the episodes of the Cutting Edge Japan Business Show as a podcast as well, wherever you get your podcasts. Today I am also drawing your attention to my new book called Japan Business Mastery available on Amazon. To go with the book, I am also starting a new TV show on YouTube called The Japan Business Mastery Show. There is a podcast version to go with it, wherever you get your podcasts. With all of this action going on, I need to move some things around. Here is the new weekly publishing schedule. The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show on YouTube and the podcast version are released on Mondays. On Tuesdays, I continue with the Presentations Japan Series Podcast, Wednesdays with the Sales Japan Series Podcast, and Thursdays with the Leadership Japan Series Podcast. Fridays, I will release the Japan Business Show on YouTube and the podcast version the same day. That means we are broadcasting every day of the week. I guess Saturday and Sunday are still open, but I think I am already crazy enough to be doing daily releases every week. Actually, I am getting tired just thinking about this publishing schedule. Why am I doing all of this for free? The answer - at Dale Carnegie we have a genuine passion to help people progress in their careers and for businesses to be successful. To have the consistency and dedication to release an episode every day, week in and week out, requires passion. A passion to serve and that is very important in all of our businesses isn't it? In this one hundredth episode, I am going to talk about the importance of showing your passion for your subject when you are speaking. We have all suffered from the opposite haven't we? We have been forced to listen to a boring, unengaged speaker just droning on and on, as they run through the details of the data. When it is our turn, we all need to do a lot better than that don't we, if we want to keep the attention of our “Age of Distraction” audience. Welcome back to this weekly edition every Tuesday of "THE Cutting Edge Japan Business Show". This is quite special, as today we broadcast episode number one hundred, so please allow me to say thank you to all the followers of the show for supporting it over this two year period. I am your host Dr. Greg Story, Your Corporate Coaching and Training Guy, President of Dale Carnegie Training Japan and best selling author of Japan Sales Mastery and my new book Japan Business Mastery. As always we are bringing the show to you from our High Performance Center in Akasaka in Minato-ku, the business center of Tokyo. Why the Cutting Edge? In this show, we are looking at the critical areas for success in business in Japan. We want to help advance everyone's thinking so that we be at the forefront, the Cutting Edge, of how to flourish here in this market. Before we get into this week's topic, here is what caught my attention lately. The number of working women in Japan has topped thirty million, the highest since records were started in nineteen fifty three. The number of women holding a job rose five hundred and thirty thousand for last year. Only fifty five percent of women hold full time jobs, the rest are working part time or are contractors with less stable positions and generally lower wages. A Kyodo News survey of one hundred and twelve companies found fifty seven percent said they are trying to create a working environment more favourable to women. In other news, Japanese women and men retained second and third place respectively, in their rankings for average life expectancy around the world in two thousand and eighteen. The average life expectancy of women in Japan is eighty seven point three two years. For men it is eighty one point two five years. A Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry official commented, “Life expectancy has grown longer as we have seen drops in mortality rates for cerebro vascular disease or strokes and pneumonia amongst women and the rate of cancer for men. Finally Toyota Motor Corporation has developed a self driving mini robot car to transport sports equipment during athletic events such as the Olympic Games next year. It will transport the equipment used for the shot put, javelins, discuss and hammer throw events to return them to the athletes . The robot which can travel at twenty kilometers an hour, has three cameras and a lidar sensor which enable to it to see its surroundings. In this episode we are talking about The Power Of Passion When Speaking Soredewa ikimasho, so let's get going. Formulistic presentations may tick the boxes, but definitely don't ignite much enthusiasm in the audience. Yes, the key points were covered, the time was consumed, people heard the presentation matching the topic previously promulgated, but so what? When we attend a mediocre or even bad presentation, we are reminded that a great opportunity has gone begging. When it is our turn and we stand in front of an audience, we are representing our personal brand and our firm's brand. People will evaluate our company on how we perform. So our job is to perform well and really build fans for our business and ourselves. Yes, a written speech is grammatically perfect, but it is often boring because of the flat way in which it is delivered. The reading cadence doesn't suit the live speaking situation. Have you ever noticed that a flat, deadly boring speech can be followed by a very engaging Q&A session led by the speaker? This is because the speaker is now freed from their self-imposed limitations of reading the speech. They start telling us stories of people to illustrate their points. They pepper us with useful information and data that gives us insights. We see some passion in what they are telling us. We all need to be like this in the main body of the speaking time. Observing a lot of speakers, I have noticed that the things that often go missing most are their passion and commitment for the topic. Additionally, it may be that an already low energy, flat delivery is further hindered by a poor structure. We enter a room full of pre-occupied people, with microscopic attention spans, basically entirely distracted before we even start. We need to grab their attention away from whatever it was they were thinking about before we get up to the podium. An excellent opening needs considerable planning. It must be a battering ram to break through the wall of audience disinterest and skepticism. It must have a powerful hook in there to keep our attention. Remember, this is how we in the audience are trained. Headlines, the opening stanzas of newspaper and magazine articles, book titles, talk shows, the nightly news programming, television dramas, movies, etc., are all carefully designed and scripted to grab and keep our attention. This is what we, as speakers, are competing with – a professional class of smart, well paid, attention monopolizing experts. So our opening has to instantly grab attention. Next we need to lead our flock through the intricacies of our topic, so that they can keep up and understand where we are going. If we have key points, then give them numbers, because we more easily follow number sequences. Just don't make it too many numbers. Keeping up with the thirty three key points of any topic, delivered in a thirty minute speech, is a nightmare the audience doesn't need. Wrapping it all up at the end is a critical component too, because this is the speaker's final impression with the audience. Have you noticed how often the final words of the talk just fade out. The speaker's voice strength just drops away altogether at the end. What we really want is passion backing up the conclusion. The voice tone should rise to a crescendo. The talk completes with a powerful hypnotic, all embracing call to action. We want everyone, metaphorically, to join us and storm the barricades. Instead we get that limping, low energy fade out, as the ineffective speaker just bumbles their way into Q&A. Typically, they don't have any strategy to control the flow of Q&A either. Because of this, they lose control of the proceedings. They have committed a fatal mistake and allowed the final question to completely determine the final impression of the talk with the audience. How many times have you heard a question raised which was completely off topic? Unfortunately this happens quite often, so the danger here is that the questioner highjacks our speech. Their topic is the last item ringing in the ears of the audience rather than what we were there to talk about. Do not let that happen! We need two powerful, passionate closes – one for the end of our speech and one for the end of Q&A. Passion for the topic and the audience are requirements. These are not optional extras, useful additions, that we can include or not at our leisure. If we don't feel passion for our topic and our audience, then we come across as flat, perfunctory, formulistic. In these cases, when the audience leaves the venue, the speaker, topic and their organisation are immediately forgotten. With that type of result, we have to ask, “well just what was the point?”. The residual impression is negative. The listeners feel that their time was wasted and no great value was imparted. They leave determined that if that same speaker ever pops up again in the future, they won't bother to attend. You may not have world beating speaking technique, structure, openings, closings or control of the Q&A, but you can overcome all of these shortcomings, if you really communicate your passion. We will forgive you small foibles, if we feel you really want to share this vital information with us. We want to know that you are really motivated to help the audience, who have given up their precious time to hear you out. Enthusiasm is contagious. Our audience will forgive a lot of our faults, if they feel our energy, passion and commitment for the topic. Be passionate, enthusiastic, well organised, well structured when you speak. If you do, then your audience will recall both you and your firm with positive regard as truly professional and isn't that what we want in business? Welcome to Unsolved Mysteries of the World Season Six Episode 12 Japan Airlines Flight 1608.It was November 17, 1986 and a huge Japanese Boeing 747-200F cargo aircraft was en route from Paris France to Narita International Airport near Tokyo Japan. It was an uneventful flight until the aircraft was above Alaska, near Anchorage. At 17:11 hours crew noted specifically that they observed two strange objects coming up to the left side of their aircraft. They rose from below and proceeded to maintain a similar speed and appeared to be escorting the cargo jet. All three crew members: Captain Kenju Terauchi an ex-fighter pilot with more than 10,000 hours flight experience,in the cockpit's left-hand seat; co-pilot Takanori Tamefuji n the right-hand seat; and flight engineer Yoshio Tsukuba all witnessed the objects approach and flight. As the objects got closer they noted each had two rectangular arrays of what appeared to be glowing nozzles or thrusters, though their main frames remained obscured by darkness. The Captain believed they were some sort of military aircraft and were simply identifying the flight, but their maneuverability was mind boggling. "The thing was flying as if there was no such thing as gravity. It sped up, then stopped, then flew at our speed, in our direction, so that to us it [appeared to be] standing still. The next instant it changed course. ... In other words, the flying object had overcome gravity." recalls the Captain. Then, suddenly, the two objects came closer and illuminated the entire cabin and produced and intense heat. Air traffic control was notified at this point, who could not confirm any traffic in the indicated position. After three to five minutes the objects assumed a side-to-side configuration, which they maintained for another 10 minutes. Each object had a square shape, consisting of two rectangular arrays of what appeared to be glowing nozzles or thrusters, separated by a dark central section. Captain Terauchi speculated in his drawings, that the objects would appear cylindrical if viewed from another angle, and that the observed movement of the nozzles could be ascribed to the cylinders' rotation. Then the two craft then departed as quickly as they had come, but then the crew noticed something even more strange. A much larger craft was no tailing them. This time, they could identify its shape and each of the crew detailed a disc shaped flying craft was behind them.Captain Terauchi now noticed a pale band of light that mirrored their altitude, speed and direction. Setting their onboard radar scope to a 25 nautical miles (46km) range, he confirmed an object in the expected 10 o'clock direction at about 7.5nmi (13.9km) distance, and informed ATC of its presence. Anchorage found nothing on their radar, but Elmendorf's NORAD Regional Operations Control Center (ROCC), directly in his flight path, reported a "surge primary return" after some minutes. As the city lights of Fairbanks began to illuminate the object, captain Terauchi believed to perceive the outline of a gigantic spaceship on his port side that was "twice the size of an aircraft carrier". The object followed "in formation", or in the same relative position throughout the 45 degree turn, a descent from 35,000 to 31,000ft, and a 360 degree turn. The short-range radar at Fairbanks airport failed, however, to register the object.Anchorage ATC offered military intervention, which was declined by the pilot, due to his knowledge of the Mantell incident. The object was not noted by any of two planes which approached JAL 1628 to confirm its presence, by which time JAL 1628 had also lost sight of it.Captain Terauchi cited in the official Federal Aviation Administration report that the object was a UFO. In December 1986, Terauchi gave an interview to two Kyodo News journalists. Japan Airlines soon grounded him for talking to the press, and moved him to a desk job. He was only reinstated as a pilot years afterwards, and retired eventually in north Kanto, Japan.Kyodo News contacted Paul Steucke, the FAA public information officer in Anchorage on December 24, and received confirmation of the incident. The FAA's Alaskan Region consulted John Callahan, the FAA Division Chief of the Accidents and Investigations branch, as they wanted to know what to tell the media about the UFO. John Callahan was unaware of any such incident, considering it a likely early flight of a stealth bomber, then in development. He asked the Alaskan Region to forward the relevant data to their technical center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where he and his superior played back the radar data and tied it in with the voice tapes by videotaping the concurrent playbacks.A day later at FAA headquarters they briefed Vice Admiral Donald D. Engen, who watched the whole video of over half an hour, and asked them not to talk to anybody until they were given the OK, and to prepare an encompassing presentation of the data for a group of government officials the next day.The meeting was attended by representatives of the FBI, CIA and President Reagan’s Scientific Study Team, among others. Upon completion of the presentation, all present were told that the incident was secret and that their meeting "never took place". According to Callahan, the officials considered the data to represent the first instance of recorded radar data on a UFO, and they took possession of all the presented data.John Callahan however managed to retain the original video, the pilot's report and the FAA's first report in his office. The forgotten target print-outs of the computer data were also rediscovered, from which all targets can be reproduced that were in the sky at the time. After a three-month investigation, the FAA formally released their results at a press conference held on March 5, 1987. Here Paul Steucke retracted earlier FAA suggestions that their controllers confirmed a UFO, and ascribed it to a "split radar image" which appeared with unfortunate timing. He clarified that "the FAA [did] not have enough material to confirm that something was there", and though they were "accepting the descriptions by the crew" they were "unable to support what they saw".The sighting received special attention from the media, as a supposed instance of the tracking of UFOs on both ground and airborne radar, while being observed by experienced airline pilots, with subsequent confirmation by an FAA Division Chief. It would have been the end of the UFO story but for an extraordinary observation by a military aircraft just a short time after the Japan Airlines incident. On January 30, 1987, a US Air Force KC-135 was flying from Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska, to Eielson AFB near Fairbanks. The crew of the KC-135 reported a large, silent, disc-shaped UFO at about 20,000 feet altitude. At this time, Anchorage radar control showed nothing unusual. In a moment, radar control asked the pilot of the plane if they still had the unknown object in sight. The frightened pilot replied yes, and added that the UFO was only 40 feet from the plane. The cockpit recording referenced the JAL - 1628 incident, which had occurred only a month earlier. The pilots of the military aircraft were startled as they observed what they believed was a similar shaped object, flying in the same manner and maneuvering just the same as the one previously reported by the Japanese Airlines flight. About 30 minutes later, Anchorage Control Tower relayed a message from the FAA, informing the pilot to contact them upon landing. The FAA wanted a full report on the UFO seen by the crew. The very next day, on January 31, another similar sighting occurred over Alaskan skies. Alaska Airline's Flight 53 reported enormous, disc-like objects flying near their aircraft. These UFOs, according to the pilot's report, were "tracking" Flight 53. The Control Tower operator related to the pilot that they did not show anything unusual on their radar. The pilot of Flight 53 was very concerned, stating that the UFO was moving at a mile/per/second, which would be about 3,600 m/p/h. The pilot also stated that the UFO had almost immediately disappeared after flying under Flight 53. Neither of the these two encounters were adequately explained by any conventional flying objects, or atmospheric anomalies, and remain a mystery. The reports requested never surfaced. In 2006 John Callahan gave his eye-witness testimony about his official investigation into the Japanese Airline Incident:So what can we make out of these sightings made by credible witnesses including air force pilots, flight engineers, experienced pilots, air traffic controllers and aviation investigators? It is obvious that something was witnessed, independently verified over the course of three separate encounters by both aircraft and ground crews – but what was it? And more importantly – why was it seemingly tracking and observing these three aircraft? Is it the occupants on the aircraft that held interest? Or the cargo they were carrying? The Buyer is God not King in Japan and that difference is huge here. There are so many cases of buyers treating sellers like dirt. The top prize has to go to the pharma industry dealing with haughty, arrogant doctors. There are other cases though where you persuade the President of something but you find the staff undermine the decision or just ignore it, because you went over their heads. Another favourite torture the seller game for buyers is getting you to lodge proposals, so they can satisfy the compliance requirements, when they have already made the buying decision and it isn't going to be you. Before we get into this week's topic, here is what caught my attention lately. Nearly forty percent of major companies plan to hire more graduates in fiscal 2019 than they did in the previous year. Half of the firms surveyed recently by Kyodo News said they were finding it difficult to hire enough staff. Toyota and Sony were among that group. Diaper maker Unicharm plans to more than double its fresh hires. The surge in adult diaper sales, which are now greater than those for babies, is driving Unicharm's growth. JAL also plans to increase hires, however Japan's three mega banks are planning to reduce their hiring of graduates. This is episode number 40 and we are talking about Soredewa ikimasho, so let's get going. Bad Buyers The customer is Kamisama(God) in sales in Japan. We hear this a lot here across all industries and sectors. Sometimes however, the buyer can more like an Oni (Devil) when they deal with salespeople. Bad behavior is bad behavior regardless of the source, but when you are trying to sell a company on your product or service, do you just have to suck it up? Actually no! Unless you are in a very small market segment, where there are only a limited number of buyers, then as salespeople we have choices. If the former is the case, then I suggest changing industries and getting out of that negative bad behavior environment. Life is short and good salespeople have highly transferable skills. If you know what you are doing, you can probably work in almost any business, as long as there is no requirement for highly technical knowledge. The Japan winner of the worst sales environment is the pharmaceutical industry selling to doctors. Unlike the rest of the advanced world, where patients use the internet to educate themselves about medical conditions, before they see the doctor, Japan is still stuck in the pre-1990s. Japanese doctors consequently, still consider themselves vastly superior to everyone else, from patients on down. At the absolute bottom of the pile are drug salespeople. Being forced to wait around for hours, fawning over the doctor, being spoken to like dirt, cleaning their Mercedes, arranging all types of incentives to get them to buy your drugs, have been the fodder for legendary poor buyer behavior forever. Conflicts of interest have emerged recently as a concern and there are many more restrictions now on entertaining doctors. The flow of goodies is being restricted and so the salesperson doesn't have as much in the way of ame (sweets) to offer anymore. They still get plenty of muchi (whip) from the buyer though. Japan has a powerful hierarchical system in place in society. You have been busily networking, creating new opportunities. The company President you have just met tells one of the staff to get together with you the salesperson. You might be thinking, this is looking good. Not necessarily. What often surprises me about HR people and other underlings in Japan is how they run their own show, regardless of what the President may want. Recently, I had lunch with a multi-national company President here running the Japan operation. The President is dynamic, articulate and a great presenter. After the lunch, as promised, the President sent an email to the HR person instructing them to get together with me to discuss training for their company. I follow up with the HR person many, many times, but never get an answer. It has become obvious they do not care what the President said, they have their own views on how to run the training and we are not going to fit into that plan. On another occasion, I had met the Japanese President at a networking event, followed up, got a meeting and in the process he introduced me to the HR people. In the meeting, the President suggested they take a look at what we offer. Many, many emails and attempted contacts later, no response from the HR team for follow-up meeting. Going back and telling the President who introduced you that, in fact, they have no power within their own organization is a bit of a delicate conversation. Even if you raise it, you have just said that the Emperor has no clothes. They do not thank you for pointing out their underlings are in rebellion and they themselves are impotent. I am still working on a solution for this contradiction. Another annoying activity is being asked to spend time to put together a proposal and quote on a product or service, but there is absolutely no intention to buy from you. This is often driven by internal compliance regulations that require three quotes. They have already secretly selected the provider and your job is to provide the paperwork to make sure that happens and the compliance box is ticked. We were contacted by a large company recently asking for a proposal on a particular piece of training. Efforts to meet the client to discuss the needs etc., were rebuffed because they said they were so busy – just send the proposal, it will be fine (!). This is a tricky one, because you don't know if you are the patsy here or if they are in fact so very busy that is why they need your help. To test the system in these specific doubtful and dubious cases, I never follow up from my side after sending over the proposal. I know, I know. This sounds like a very bad sales effort on my part and I should be fired, but it is a technique to reveal who we are dealing with here, time wasters or genuine buyers. If they are really interested, then they will get back to me with either more questions or an order. If stony silence is all we get, we know we have been royally used to assist a competitor's sales effort. That is a double ouch right there, isn't it! Find out more when we come back from the break Welcome back It is not always black and white though. In another case the President was a graduate of our programme and told his HR Director to get us to put together a proposal on some training. This is exciting and you think “we are looking good”. The President knows the quality and the results from first hand experience and has the authority to make this happen. Or so it seems. In this example, I actually get to meet the HR people and their internal client. I followed up to present the proposal to them. “No, we are very busy, just send it”. Warning signal right there. I pushed back, “actually I need to explain it for you”. Further stalling, “No, just send it”. The pricing by the way, was very close to their indication. Eventually you send it, but now you begin to suspect this is revenge on the President for daring to enter their world of authority. What looked like an inside track to a positive decision, gets derailed as the internal buying entity flexes muscle to show their independence. Applying my standard rule, I do not follow up further and just wait to see what happens. There was no response from their side, so again few options available, other than to tough it out. These things happen in business, but the key point is do not take it personally. Sales is a roller coaster ride of ups and downs and your emotions are always under attack. Accept that sometimes you will get played by the buyer, but keep a record of the incident. Every six months give that company a call to see if your nefarious counterpart is still working there. People are much more mobile in Japan, compared to many years ago and there is a good chance the evil, malicious puppeteer has moved on. We should not deal with that particular buyer again, but we can try to deal with the company. There are usually many buyers in your market and many who you have had no contact with as yet, so there is little need to deal with bad buyer behavior. As the old saying goes “fool me once it's your fault, fool me twice it's my fault”. Action Steps if you are in an industry where buyers habitually treat salespeople very badly then switch industries Just because the people at the top like you, don't think that means anything in Japan.Keep working on those who actually execute the work. If the buyer just says “send it to me” get worried, you may be the patsy for unknowingly assisting a rival's offer Keep in touch with the company, the “problem child” may have moved on Never forget “fool me once it's your fault, fool me twice it's my fault” THE Cutting Edge Japan Business Show is here to help you succeed in Japan. A man called Shinji Aoba suspected of torching an animation studio last Friday. 33 people were murdered and 10 people are still in heavy injury in hospital. It marks the worst mass killing since a suspected arson attack in Tokyo killed 44 people in 2001. This was totally mental. Why so many people were trapped in the building? The building did not have any sprinklers or indoor fire hydrants, though it was not legally required to by the fire code, a Kyoto Fire Department official said. Kyodo News reported that 19 of the 33 who died were found on a staircase leading up to the roof from the third floor, with bodies piled on top of each other. Firefighters arriving soon after the fire began found the door to the roof was shut but could be opened from the outside, Kyodo News stated. Many people tried but failed to escape to the roof, fire officials said. Experts say they believe many died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The survivor, who was working on scenery and background on the second floor, said he first heard commotion downstairs and a female voice screaming. Then a loud explosion followed by a colleague running up the stairs, shouting "Fire!" An alarm went off. "A black mushroom cloud billowed up the stairs, perhaps within 15 seconds, then everything went black, like pouring black ink all over the place. I couldn't see anything," the man told NHK public television on condition of anonymity. He said the building quickly filled with "diabolical smell, something that would kill you if you breathe in once." He ran out to a balcony. "I had to decide whether to jump and get hurt, or die in the smoke," he said. Hot air right behind him, the animator jumped with several others. He ended up with an injured arm. The suspects Aoba arrived carrying two containers of flammable liquid, police said, quoting witnesses. He entered the studio's unlocked front door, dumped the liquid using a bucket, and set it afire with a lighter, police said. The suspect is the residence of Northern Tokyo. Nippon TV said He "seemed to be discontented, he seemed to get angry, shouting something about how he had been plagiarised," a woman who saw the man being detained told reporters. Police identified the suspected arsonist as Shinji Aoba who was taken into custody soon after the incident, NHK said. Japan's architecture are known for the earthquake resistance. In this case, the building was vulnerable from the fire. When the big earthquake hit Osaka in 1995, the second biggest cause of death was fire. Journalist must research the fire resistance in the animation production company. If the fire alarm kept warning, it could save more life from this incident. https://apple.news/AFIaK1-n-Tsev6k3qiYYXeA
