The December festive season in Nigeria, commonly referred to as ‘detty December' have captured the world's attention. Lagos alone brought in $71.6m in tourism revenue in December 2024, according to the Lagos State Government. How are locals faring with the influx of tourists in a tough economy? Catherine Nzuki is joined by Oluwatomisin Amokeoja, a journalist with Forbes Africa, to give an overview of ‘detty December' in Lagos. They unpack what ‘detty December' is (1:58); where the term originates (3:40); and how it has grown into such a big phenomenon that pulls in celebrities, tourists, and diaspora members (known colloquially as the “I Just Got Back” or IJGBs) (5:59); and what the December celebrations look like for locals (7:54). Peter Imouokhome, a development economist and consultant based in Lagos joins the podcast to unpack the economics of ‘detty December'. They discuss the causes of the ongoing economic crisis in Nigeria (10:40); its impact on locals (16:29); how the cost of living crisis has led to protests (20:00); and how Nigeria can balance the economic benefits of tourism with its unintended negative effects on locals (25:50).

She qualified as an attorney and worked as a corporate associate at Webber Wentzel, one of South Africa's top 5 law firms, where she worked on some of the biggest corporate and commercial transactions in the country. Deborah thereafter worked as a senior law clerk to Justice Sisi Khampepe of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, during which time she researched for and advised the judge on some the most complex cases in the country. At the beginning of 2019, Deborah also lent her legal expertise to the fight against corruption in South Africa, representing a well-known non-governmental organisation. In this role, she was instrumental in spearheading various ground-breaking legal matters – including litigation against former members of state-owned entities implicated in allegations of malfeasance and corruption using the Companies Act, and successfully reviewing the findings of the Arms Procurement Commission, securing a landmark and historic victory against the presidency of the Republic of South Africa. Deborah has also held the position of the special secretariat to the African Union, and in this capacity, she led the preparation of the draft African Union's Common African Position on Asset Recovery (the “CAPAR”) working closely with African Union ambassadors and international dignitaries while consulting for the Coalition for African Dialogue (CoDA). Odun Eweniyi (COO & Co-Founder at PiggyVest) joins me on Tech Talks Daily to discuss how she's revolutionizing the savings & investments culture amongst young Nigerians. She is also a Forbes Africa 30 under 30 Technology Pioneer awardee. Based in Nigeria, PiggyVest is West Africa's first digital savings and micro-investment app with a focus on restoring trust and democratising financial services for Gen Zs & millennials. They've built a strong customer base of over 3.5 million users since launching in 2016 and in 2021 alone, the platform paid out over $582 million to its users. PiggyVest's growth is also especially impressive when you consider its last fundraise was a $1.1mn seed round in 2018. Why do savings & investments in Nigeria need change? There are very few countries in the world where savings are more of a necessity than Nigeria. Due to the severe lack of credit options, Nigerians are well-accustomed to paying for goods and services upfront, forcing them to rely heavily on their savings. However, with excessive bank charges and poor interest rates further eroded by high inflation, they are heavily disincentivized to save with traditional financial institutions, which often leave them with less money than their original deposits. Equally, the barriers to boosting wealth creation through investments are just as daunting. The average entry point to invest with formal financial institutions stands at 10,000 Naira, which is 8% of the average Nigerian's annual income. We discuss how technology is restoring trust and democratizing financial services for Gen Zs & millennials in Nigeria. I also learn more about how technology and innovation is sweeping across Africa.

In this episode, we unpack lessons from Theo Baloyi. He is the ex-accountant who left the comfort of employment to create a business that sustainably employs others. He started the fastest-growing sneaker brand in Africa from his township home in Alex. After being rejected 13 times Bhatu now has over 25 stores (and counting) sustainably employs over 200 people and has many great partnerships. The shoe brand is now recognized as one of the top 10 trusted brands in Africa. His exploits and passion have gotten him accolades such as Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 – South African Business Premier Awards; Forbes Africa 30 under 30 – 2019; BBQ Awards - Hennessy XO Businessman of the Year Award 2020; and Top Empowerment Awards 2020 - Top Empowered Young Achiever of the Year. His name is Theo Baloyi and here are some lessons we can learn from him. Despise not the days of small beginnings“I think, for me, because I started from humble beginnings and I was very intentional, I've sacrificed so much and I've re-invested so much in starting the business, I literally live my brand. Even at times when things aren't going the right way, I just keep on going. I think it's something each and every person needs to have in them.” What stops people from starting is the fear of failure or being overwhelmed by the vision they have and the time it will take to get to where they want to get to. However, every big company was once a start-up - every single one. They all started small in a garage, a room, or the boot of a car. It is the small beginnings that will help you remember where you came from and give you the strength to succeed. Starting small and struggling to grow develops a depth of character that perceived “overnight success” won't give you. Theo always points to the story of him starting from the boot of his car and refusing to quit - always sacrificing and giving back into the business to build what he has today. Despise not the days of small beginnings as they build the character you will need to stay at the top. No matter what, keep working“In favourable and unfavourable times...YOU WORK” Hard work is a great deal of effort and endurance. In the world of business, you are 80% likely to fail. Therefore you will face hard times. You will be rejected. You will have times when you don't want to get up in the morning. You will have times when you think you can't make it anymore. When this happens, you need to remember that you are a gladiator and keep working. Theo has definitely faced resistance, rejection, and ridicule on the path to success. He was first rejected 13 times before he got a meaningful partnership. Even at the zenith of success, he is still facing resistance, rejection, and ridicule. In spite of this, he has what I call his ‘work no matter what philosophy.” They hate...You Work They criticize...You Work They speak ill of you...You Work They copy...You Work They sabotage...You Work They Say No...You Work They Plot evil...You Work In favorable and unfavorable times...You Work Work when things don't go well, work when you don't have money, work when you don't have a favor, work when things go well, work when you don't see light at the end of the tunnel - work no matter what. There are a lot of things you can't control but you can control how hard you work. Scale fast“I literally lived my brand” “Think big, start small, then scale or fail fast” - Mats Lederhausen It's good to start small and to do small things well. It is not good to stay small if you have the opportunity to grow bigger. The bigger you grow, the more people you can serve. This is the thinking that has aided Bhatu's success in growing fast. They have opened 8 stores in three months and grew over 300% in sales over a pandemic. This was not always the case when the brand started with sales happening from the boot of a car. Your business serves people. More people need your service and can only get it once you decide to grow bigger as

In our podcast this week, Karla Fletcher, Head of Marketing at Topco Media speaks to Theo Baloyi, Founder and CEO of Bathu Shoes – a truly South African business success story. While living with his uncle in Alexandra, Theo completed a BCom Accounting degree and went on to work in South Africa for two years and then the Middle East. It was during his time in the Middle East that the 30-year-old accountant-turned entrepreneur saw a gap in the sneaker market. He noticed that on a global level there was something missing − an African sneaker brand portraying an authentically honest African story. After months of researching and conceptualising, Bathu was born in 2015, launching 100 pairs of Mesh Edition sneakers to the residents of Alexandra, Soweto, Thembisa and Midrand. In 2016 after releasing another 400 pairs, the Bathu website crashed a mere four hours after the announcement of the release. To say the brand took off would be an understatement. More about Theo While 2020 saw him winning the Top Young Achiever Award, 2019 was a huge year for Theo and saw him winning the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the South African Business Premier Awards, the Advance Media Most Influential Young South African in Business Award, the Sanlam & Partners Emerging Business Entrepreneur of the Year Award as well as landing a spot on the Forbes Africa 30 Under 30.

She had studied in Malaysia and the US, and had also worked in the United Arab Emirates and Zimbabwe. But when she decided to return to Sudan in 2016, she found it hard to find visual inspiration from the streets. With limited resources, issues with infrastructure, and “mostly brown everywhere” as she described, Hadeel wanted to be part of the change and inspire visual creativity in her country. “I wanted to inspire visual creativity… to help other entrepreneurs and other creators to create that standard… I wanted to be one of the people that are pushing this agenda that we as the people, we need to celebrate ourselves, our colors, our truths, our culture in all its diversity, and also have that addressed in a commercial aspect.” - Hadeel Osman This desire led Hadeel to create DAVU Studio, a multi-disciplinary creative studio that fuses design, art, education and sustainability. “DAVU stands for Designing A Visual Utopia. Coming to Sudan, you don't really see a lot of visual inspiration… it's hard for me to get inspiration. I couldn't see a lot of what I wished I could see… I wanted to design my very own visual utopia with whatever I had.” - Hadeel Osman   DAVU Studio offers an array of creative services in the form of art and creative direction, concept development, branding, styling and most importantly, informal education through interactive, immersive and creative workshops. Through this, she has had the opportunity to work with Sudanese visual artists and designers, and was commissioned by the Sudan Independent Film Festival to train costume designers, jewelry designers and filmmakers. In this episode, Hadeel talks about her journey in her career, the misconceptions about Sudan, and the status quo of visual creativity in her country. She shares her inspiring dream-come-true story of wanting to be in the ‘30 Under 30' list since she was 12. Hadeel also shares some valuable advice to the aspiring youth of Sudan, as well as her goals and dreams.

Saving. Investing. with Odunayo Eweniyi She was of the opinion that every individual needed to save money because nobody was going to do it for them as the present state of the economy also called for that. Even as it is important to be able to avoid accumulating debts, she advised that people make a practice of putting some amount aside anytime they get paid. She spoke on the need for people to have financial education especially young people around the issues of finance, saving, investing as well as budgeting. She gave credence to technology as a tool that can be used in automating such financial processes. Saying that with existing online platforms, one could save seamlessly. Speaking on the right time to invest she said that individuals could invest any time as it is important that their money works for them adding that they should ensure to also diversify their portfolio when investing. She said that one could recognize a good investment if the returns are higher than the inflation rate at the time. She motioned on people to take the opportunity to register now even as the Nigerian Economy is not stable. When investing she advised that people should carry out their research and play based on their risk appetite i.e. the amount of risk, they are willing to take, the interest rate and where they are most comfortable. She revealed that she often had the habit of planning for two days upon receiving money, this she said was important as a lot of people did not have a healthy relationship with money being that money was only a tool. She went further to say that she makes sure not to spend money that she has not yet seen or acquired yet. Speaking about partnerships around their online platform she said that there are always a lot of conversations around every feature they released so as to serve their customers better. She went on to say that their users often appreciated these features as they made sure to always build their products around their customers even as it has helped them stand out over the long run. Listing some of the lessons she had learned as a tech founder, she said that she had come to know when to put a business idea to rest, to understand that formal education could not prepare one for business and has come to see the internet as a very useful tool in learning. On paying debts versus saving, she said that priority should be placed on both as she often referred to the 50-30-20 principle. She advised on people using 50% of their earnings for personal needs, 20% for savings and investments, then 30% for their wants and paying their debts. She reiterated on the need for people to develop healthy spending habits and to always learn to also say no to impulsive spending.

Awaken Your Alpha with Adam Lewis Walker - The #1 Mens Development podcast for inspirational stories & strategies to thrive!

This is the FIRST ever return interview done on the podcast! I spoke to Alpesh back in 2014, since then a lot has happened and recently he sold his business in a multi-million dollar deal after "Getting his arse kicked in Africa" (His own words). Here we talk about how he has been TESTED through this process, what NOT to do and the struggles he found "Post Acquisition" when he should have been on could nine in theory.   Alpesh is the essence of a true Entrepreneur. We take risks and we get tested everyday. Born in the Ugandan jungle while his parents were there on safari, Mi- Fone's CEO and Founder is the true meaning of "Indian Blood...African Heart". This original African Indian entrepreneur made a name for himself selling large volumes of mobile devices to the Chinese back in the '90s. In 2008 Alpesh founded Mi-Fone the first African Mobile Devices brand and one of Africa’s first Tech start ups. Prior to Mi Fone, Alpesh was Director of Sales Africa/Middle East for Motorola Inc. Betweeen 2002-2006 Alpesh placed more than 5m devices into the African continent generating revenues upwards of $500m. Whilst at Motorola he realised that the big brands were missing the point and that ultimately Africa was best served by Africans themselves. His 20 years of experience in the mobile business is not to be taken lightly and he is well respected in Emerging markets for his knowledge. He is known to be one of the hardest working people in the African Tech space and is often quoted as "An Innovator, a Disruptor and a true Visionary". Alpesh and the Mi Fone brand have been regularly featured on CNN, Forbes Africa, CNBC Africa and numerous other media. Mi-Fone, a completely bootstrapped operation, has also been the recipient of the Frost & Sullivan 2014 award for "Entrepreneurial company of the Year" as well as a finalist in the African Leadership Network Awards 2015. See www.mi-fone.mobi for more information. In 2012, Alpesh founded OJU, the worlds first Afro Emoticon character brand. OJU received world wide press attention and has garnered numerous awards such as the South African Loeries Grand Prix Digital Winner 2014 and Licensing Expo 2014 “One to Watch” award.

Read the transcript and more about Raindolf on yali.state.gov: https://goo.gl/n1eKJG In 2012, a 22-year-old Ghanaian computer science student named Raindolf Owusu introduced African internet users to the Anansi Browser. It is considered Africa’s first web browser and was designed to help users with unreliable internet connections stay connected as well as use games and a web camera that can operate offline. For his creation, he has been dubbed “the Mark Zuckerberg of Accra” by Forbes Africa magazine. But as he tells the State Department’s Macon Phillips in a YALI Voices podcast, as successful and as celebrated as the browser has been been, he lives in a country where many people can’t use it because they aren’t connected to the internet. “Building a big web browser … will give you accolades and everything else, but that’s something my mother cannot use or my grandmother in the village cannot use,” he said. As founder and CEO of the software company Oasis WebSoft, Owusu wants to create products that would be more relevant to his community. For example, in Ghana, like other African countries, mobile phones are relatively cheap and nearly everyone has one. Where is he taking his talent now and what are his future plans as a young leader?
