The History Of European Theatre
Playing with Shakespeare: A Conversation with Charles Moseley

The History Of European Theatre

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 27, 2025 56:13

Episode 153Today's guest episode serves as a great precursor to what is to come. The discussion that you are about to hear with Charles Mosely focusses on Shakespeare as a man of the theatre and discusses how the plays were created for and affected by the Theatre, the Audience and the conventions of the time. And that brief description does not do this wide ranging and detailed discussion any sort of justice. I think all of the thoughts that Charles discusses are well worth holding I mind as we work through the plays of Shakespeare and Jonson over the coming months.Charles Moseley is a difficult man to summarise in a few words. He is a historian, literary critic and travel writer, but that only touches on part of his extensive output and experience. Most relevant for our purposes today are his years as College Lecturer in English at Magdalene College, Cambridge, then Director of Studies in English (and later Fellow) of Wolfson College, and finally Senior Tutor and Director of Studies in English at Hughes Hall, Cambridge. The depth of knowledge and enthusiasm that Charles holds for his subject is, I think, quite self-evident and I am sure you will enjoy every moment of this, just as I did.To see more about Charles, his publications, and other writings, including a fuller biography you can go to www.charlesmoseley.comSupport the podcast at:www.thehistoryofeuropeantheatre.comwww.patreon.com/thoetpwww.ko-fi.com/thoetp Hosted on Acast. One of the highlights of his time there was designing and leading a very distinctive module for their full-time MBA students, LeadershipPlus. In partnership with the school's career coaches and external consultants, the module was highly experiential, helping each student to explore who they are, to work collaboratively in a team, and to consider how they want to act as a manager and leader. He also worked on modules on Leadership, Management of Change, and Organisational Behaviour for students on WBS's Executive and Global Online MBA programmes. For seven years, he served as a Senior Tutor for half of the final year undergraduates at WBS. This involved supporting students who had mitigating circumstances – sadly, often mental health challenges – which affected their ability to study and complete assessments. He was also for eight years a personal tutor for Foundation Year students, supporting individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to gain access to a WBS degree programme and hence to widen participation.Prior to joining WBS, he worked for nine years in the Learning & Development team at the University of Warwick. He created and ran the Warwick Leadership Programme for senior academics, administrators and managers. He also established the Warwick Administrative Management Programme for middle-ranking administrators and managers. He created a staff coaching and mentoring scheme, a competency framework and associated 360-degree feedback process, and a workplace mediation process. Before that, he worked in learning and development roles at British Gas, Transco and National Grid. He is accredited to use a number of psychometric tools and 360-degree feedback instruments, including MBTI and Spotlight. When we talk about greenhouse gas emissions and food, we usually focus on food production, but these estimates often only tell the story as far as the farm gate or the retailer. How important are the choices we make in our own kitchens? Studies have suggested that home cooking can account for as much as 60% of the total emissions associated with certain foods. On returning from a 5-day conference Dr Omo would like to share with you what she has learned listening to peak performance coach Tony Robbins, top Life and Business Strategist, and supporting many people to overcome their reticence in facing their challenges and fears by, literally, walking through fire. Find out what Dr Omo learned from helping others through this cathartic breakthrough.  KEY TAKEAWAYS  As a conference volunteer, Dr Omo was responsible for helping 8000 people who are deciding to walk across hot coal as a symbolic leap to conquer fear and overwhelm. As we grow older the responsibility and stakes grow so the possibility of failure holds more weight.  When you want to achieve something the best way to build your momentum is to surround yourself with people who are going to champion you. We often carry false beliefs about our capabilities, even during the performance of tasks that we believe ourselves to be incapable of. Do not be afraid to ask advice from those individuals whose leadership you look up to and would like to emulate.   Be clear on your target goal and do not think you have to achieve it ruthlessly. BEST MOMENTS‘His name is Tony Robbins. He's a peak performance coach and I've started listening to him and working with him since 2015 and my life has truly been changed. I really believe that he came into my life at the right time.' ‘God surrounds you with the people around you to make it happen.' ‘As the participants were coming to the point where they had to walk on the fire, what really, really helped them was when we were all chanting with them. We were like; ‘Yes, yes, yes!''‘I was volunteering and registering about 800 people and saying hello to people with ease. Despite the fact that I was welcoming people, greeting people at the door so easily, I taught myself that I was shy.'‘Taking charge of you moving into your next leadership position is your responsibility.' Welcome to the first episode of Power in Diversity with Dr Omo Akoje Okonkwo, this podcast is a space where professional women from diverse backgrounds, eager to grow as leaders, come to be inspired and gain wisdom from other leaders. As a great introduction to the podcast we have a fantastic guest, Dr Anna Kusi on the show. Anna is a medical doctor with a background in obstetrics and gynaecology and is the founder of Black Female Doctors UK with the aim of uniting black female doctors to support each other in their careers.    KEY TAKEAWAYS Black women and women from ethnic minority groups reach menopause on average eight months earlier than other races. We also tend to have more symptoms and more severe symptoms that last longer. This can lead to more health implications and more research needs to be done.  We can get menopause ready by generally staying fit, that means eating healthily, getting regular exercise, and not smoking. When your body stops producing as much oestrogen, we need to make sure our bodies are in the best state possible to deal with that change.  Perimenopausal symptoms include Irregular periods. Hot flashes and sleep problems. Mood changes. Vaginal and bladder problems. Vaginal dryness. Decreasing fertility. Changes in sexual function. Loss of bone. And changing cholesterol levels. You may have all or none of these symptoms.  Anna has experienced a lack of diversity while studying to be a doctor in Bristol, there was a lack of black women doctors for her to look up to and gain inspiration from.  This lack of diversity did sometimes give her a feeling of being ‘other' like she didn't belong. Some people even thought she was a foreign student despite growing up in Peckham. At the time it was very isolating for Anna but now she says that she works with a much more diverse group of doctors.    BEST MOMENTS ‘We forget that the menopause can affect any woman at any age'  ‘We need to be menopause ready and do it like a real boss lady' ‘With the lack of diversity, you can feel the imposter syndrome'    EPISODE RESOURCES  Black Female Doctors UK (@blackfemaledrs.uk) • Instagram photos and videos Dr Anna Kusi on LinkedIn ABOUT THE GUEST  Dr Anna Kusi is a medical doctor with a background in obstetrics and gynaecology and is the founder of Black Female Doctors UK with the aim of uniting black female doctors to support each other in their careers. She dedicates time to mentoring aspiring dentists, creating education videos to promote oral health, volunteering, and advocating for inclusivity within the dental profession. Dr Cinwe joins Dr Omo on Power in Diversity to share her story and hopefully inspire you to aim for the best.    KEY TAKEAWAYS   Resilience is important to build as a young person. Chinwe always knew she could do whatever she wanted because of her desire and drive. Even with the traumas and challenges she faced when her family moved from Nigeria to Italy and the racism they endured, Chinwe had the personality to let it build her character, rather than break it.  Growing up in an area of Italy which didn't have a black community and without many friends at school, Chinwe had to rely on her family for support. It's lucky she has a twin sister and another sister only a year different in age from her.  Chinwe has the ability to do things by herself, even at a young age she flew to London on her own for her interview at King's College and impressed them so much they broke protocol and pretty much told her she'd got in.  Chinwe's goal is to create a practice where anyone can walk in and feel like they're safe and they belong there regardless of race or age or anything that people have made them feel other for.    BEST MOMENTS   ‘These experiences build you and your resilience.'  ‘I'm not going to give up even if they laugh at me..' ‘It's hard when you see injustice and others turn away.' ‘Validation does not need to come from anywhere external.'   EPISODE RESOURCES    Dr Chinwe Akuonu on LinkedIn Dr Chinwe Akuonu (@dr.chinwe.55) • Instagram photos and videos   ABOUT THE GUEST    Dr Chinwe Akuonu graduated from King's College London with multiple awards to her name, such as London's Best Young Dentist finalist 2022. Dr Maggie Andi is a Dental Practice Owner, Holistic Dentist, Life Coach, and passionate Youth Football Coach. She joins Oma today on Power in Diversity to talk about her career in dentistry, the different hats she wears as a life coach and football coach, and her wonderful attitude when it comes to tackling obstacles and seeing them as opportunities to grow and give.  KEY TAKEAWAYS From a British Nigerian family, Maggie is a working mum with three young children, one of whom is a West End award winning actress, one is a busy netballer and another a youth pro footballer. Her husband is a surgeon so the get up and go attitude extends to the whole family.  Maggie overcame dyslexia to make the transition from modelling to footballing dental student in 1998. She didn't make the grades on her offer but with her drive and social skills she convinced them to let her study anyway. Maggie qualified in the top 10 in her year 2003 at age 22. There is a massive untapped potential within the brains of every human being. Maggie sees this every day when coaching youth football, if you tell them they can do it and show them how to practise, then that sponge like brain can learn to do anything.  The worst thing that will happen is nothing. If you try and it doesn't work, then the worst place you can be is right back where you started, only with a little more knowledge of what to do next time.  BEST MOMENTS ‘I remember thinking for the first time in a long time, it is possible to try'  ‘I can't handle sick children and dying people, so that ruled out medicine' ‘Sometimes you just fall into something and you know if it's right for you' ‘The world will move in a certain way when it's ready for something' EPISODE RESOURCES  Maggie on LinkedIn Mill Hill Dental Practice Maggie Data Andi (@maggietheholisticdentist) • Instagram photos and videos Dr Maggie Data Andi BDS MJDF RCSEng MFDS CGDent UK (@maggie_andi) / Twitter ABOUT THE GUEST  “I qualified from St Barts and the Royal London, Queen Mary school of medicine and dentistry in 2003, aged just 22. It's been a tremendous learning journey since I have embarked on several post graduate courses and gained certification in various fields of restorative dentistry. I was extremely proud to receive my prestigious Membership of the joint dental faculties of Surgery and General Practice.  I love so many aspects of my profession, and as such have never specialised as I would rather not be limited to one niche, or indeed one profession! A Bit About Me  Welcome to the first episode of Power in Diversity with Dr Omo Akoje Okonkwo, this podcast is a space where professional women from diverse backgrounds, eager to grow as leaders, come to be inspired and gain wisdom from other leaders. Omo introduces herself and explains what she has been doing since her last season and presents her newly titled podcast Power in Diversity to you and explains what you can look forward to in the coming series.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Omo has renamed ‘United Sisters' to ‘Power in Diversity' to truly express her aim to help all of us understand the power behind being a diverse community.    With so many shifts in society between the last season and ‘Power in Diversity', Omo has had experiences and met wonderful people that she wants to share with you to illustrate how much she believes that diversity offers fantastic benefits in all walks of life.   Omo's dissertation on Clinical Leadership and the Role of Gender during her MBA allowed her to interview many female leaders to fully understand their journeys and bring that knowledge to you.  Over the coming episodes, Omo will introduce guests who will speak to the role of women and the challenge of gender imbalance still present in most corners of society.    BEST MOMENTS ‘I thought the name ‘Power in Diversity' would really best serve the community of people that I really want to reach.' ‘As covid hits I was in the middle of my Masters and had three kids to look after myself and was a healthcare worker so I was working on the front line on covid. It was such a juggle. At the same time I was doing a Diploma in Transformative Coaching because one of the things I really wanted to do is not just be able to talk about empowerment.' ‘During this time the was also the MeToo movement where a lot of women were coming up and speaking about their journey in the corporate world. Their careers and their personal life and how they felt held back, things that happened to them or how they felt mistreated and so on and so forth.' Today Dr Omo is so excited to share this platform with a close friend who has joined her on a journey to promote and spread the message of diversity and female leadership. Dr. Elizabeth is a family practitioner passionate about functional medicine and alternative approaches to improving people's health. Things are slightly different in this episode as Omo is in the interviewee seat rather than being the interviewer, and Dr Elizabeth will be asking the questions. KEY TAKEAWAYS Omo's early years in Nigeria instilled in her the belief that she could achieve anything she set her mind. When given the golden opportunity to come to the UK, she was determined not to misuse it. Omo worked tirelessly at school to achieve top grades, despite facing hurdles such as attending a convent school where few people shared her ethnicity or cultural background. As a result, Omo struggled to feel a sense of belonging and often felt lost.  When asking her career advisor at school about going into dentistry, Omo was told, “I don't think people like you do dentistry”. She knew girls in the school who were applying for medicine and hadn't done any science in their A levels, so how come they are given the opportunity to do medicine, but people like her aren't? Maybe she hadn't even seen any black woman as a dentist. For Omo, her journey in transformational coaching began with her passion for optimising patients' oral health. She couldn't understand why there was often resistance to change, even when patients expressed a desire to improve their oral health. This sparked her interest in understanding what motivates people, specifically in the context of organisational behaviour psychology.  Omo finds that many of our female leaders feel they have to become more masculine in the traits they display to be able to fall into that leadership position. If you display a masculine tendency in your leadership style, you are criticised as a woman. But if you decide to display the compassionate, warm, kind side, which lends itself to healthcare professionals, then you are then seen as a weak leader. A healthy mental state stems from knowing yourself, understanding your boundaries, identifying your non-negotiables, and finding happiness and acceptance within that framework. It is also important to have a support system of friends who genuinely know and accept you for who you are.   BEST MOMENTS ‘With traditional Nigerian parents, you can't go all the way to the UK to come out and do interior designing.' ‘That kind of put a fire in my belly. I don't know what you mean by people like me. I'm going to go for it' ‘I wanted to be able to learn how what I was doing at different seasons of my life allowed me to create the results and how can I replicate that in my team.' ‘I do think organisations need to do much better in creating an environment where they can thrive, where they are valued, respected, and we feel like a sense of belonging.' ‘You employ' people not just for the skillset. You employ them for their heart and attitude, and you can't train that.' ‘I want individuals from minority groups to know they're not alone in what they go through.'   ABOUT THE GUEST  As a healthcare practitioner, Dr Elizabeth specialises in family medicine and has recently begun working in functional medicine. Functional medicine involves understanding how the body's various organ systems function when in a healthy state and working towards restoring them to their optimal state of health. This approach takes a holistic view of disease treatment. Creatively Dr Elizabeth is interested in people's stories and does a lot of writing essays, poetry and just finds people's life stories interesting. We need more allies and people from outside our community who will stand up when they see something wrong.    BEST MOMENTS ‘I realised this is the kind of positive impact I want to have on other families.' ‘Don't shut your mind of to pursuing medicine because of your background.' ‘We noticed a 360-degree shift in attitudes when it came to issues faced by black people.' ‘Privilege doesn't just come in the form of what race you are.' ‘Stand your ground in a respectful manner!'   EPISODE RESOURCES    Dr Khadija Owusu Dr Khadija Owusu (@khadijaowusu) • Instagram photos and videos Khadija Owusu (@KhadijaOwusu) / Twitter Melanin Medics   ABOUT THE GUEST    Dr Khadija Owusu is an award-winning Leader, International Speaker and Junior Doctor. After experiencing over 30 years of Christianity, Islam, and New Ageism, her belief that everything lies within and not without has become unshakable. Hoda and host Omo will be talking about how Hoda helps others back to the truth within themselves.    KEY TAKEAWAYS   Hoda's work involves healing past childhood, generational difficulties, challenges and traumas through hypnosis. This is to release the person from feeling like they are blocked from moving forward in their life and realising a dream.  True inner peace is unshakable, it cannot be robbed from you by outside factors such as money troubles, losing a job, losing a relationship, anything that can shake a person to their core. It is abnormal in awake adults but is perfectly normal in children up to 13 years old. It is also normal during sleep. Today's guest on Power in Diversity is someone Dr. Omo has watched grow from strength to strength. Elaine Cunningham Walker is an award-winning educational strategist and founder of the Global Educational Consulting firm, who has also been featured in Forbes. As a mother of two highly gifted children, both of whom were endorsed by Manasa after appearing on Channel Four's Child Genius, Elaine has become a go-to consultant for parents seeking advice on how to bring out the best in their own children.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   Elaine finds that many children lack the emotional intelligence and resilience to deal with the personal struggles they face on the education path. However, she lives by the code “There is Genius in every child, it just needs nurtured and developed”.  Elaine has become an advocate for building the next generation of leaders, emphasising the importance of ensuring that people who look like her and her children are represented in top positions. She believes that the reason for the underrepresentation of certain groups at the top is due to a lack of access to the right schools, friends, and networks. Networking is all about leaving a lasting impression on people's minds. It's important to be memorable for the right reasons, and unfortunately, our community often fails to achieve this. As women, we often neglect investing in ourselves. We tend to invest in others but fail to invest in ourselves by seeking out mentors, coaches, or individuals who have already achieved success and can provide positive guidance or advice on what steps we need to take to reach our goals. When we are labelled as being angry, it is because we are trying to win the argument with emotion instead of facts. If we speak from a place of facts rather than emotion, people will perceive us differently, and we will not come across as angry.   BEST MOMENTS   ‘The statistics say that if you're a black single mother, your children must end up on a particular trajectory. And I didn't want that for my children' ‘You can do everything right, but if you don't know someone who knows somebody who knows somebody, those doors cannot be open for you' ‘Pitch yourself as somebody that they need to know' ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step'   EPISODE RESOURCES    Elaine on LinkedIn Elaine Cunningham-Walker Elaine C Walker BSc, MSc (@elainecwalker) / Twitter Elaine C Walker|Mentor|Speaker|Female Founder (@elainecwalker) • Instagram photos and videos   ABOUT THE GUEST    Elaine Cunningham Walker is an award-winning educational strategist and founder of the Global Educational Consulting firm, who has been featured in Forbes. Changing the way you think about yourself changes how you feel about yourself. recognise your successes, when you do something well, write it down and then when you feel like an imposter, read it.  When a man is asked to do something in business, he'll normally say yes and do it. When a woman's asked to do something, she'll say, oh, well, I haven't done this, and I haven't done that. Women will start talking about all the things they can't do or that they haven't done before. They verbalise it to themselves, whereas the guys do it in their own heads. When you're in a leadership position, say yes and then find out how you're going to do it. Don't talk about everything you can't do. Talk about the things you can do. Something Fiona always says to leaders when succession planning is that they need to find out the people that want to be developed and grown. You pick the people that are putting their hands up. You cannot train in enthusiasm and motivation, You have to find those qualities in a person and develop the rest.    BEST MOMENTS   ‘It's lifelong learning, nothing stops, and age does not matter.' ‘Stop telling yourself you're an imposter. Stop it. Stop putting that label onto yourself.' ‘If you don't open your mouth in business and say what you've achieved, someone else is going to own it for themselves.' ‘Get me involved in something I want. How can I help? How can I do this? Say to your manager, in two years time, I would love to be in that position like you. How do I do it?' ‘If you use language in a certain way, you can influence behaviour.'   EPISODE RESOURCES    www.nlpbusinesscircle.com Fiona on LinkedIn   ABOUT THE GUEST    “I started my career in Air Traffic Control, moved into Hospitality and for many years worked  around Europe running clubs and bars. I then transitioned into Sales and had been working in Dubai as a Sales Manager for Xerox in the late 80's when I got my big NLP 'WOW' moment. This is when I knew that I had stumbled on something special. My introduction to NLP was the catalyst to major life changes. I moved back to the UK and immersed myself in learning as much as I could about the way the mind works. I qualified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, Life Coach, Business Performance Coach, NLP Practitioner, NLP Master Practitioner, Licensed NLP Trainer and finally an NLP Business Coach Trainer. In 2001 I set up my own company focusing on helping others learn to use NLP techniques, to help them become better Business  Leaders and Coaches. I developed a range of NLP based  Corporate Communication, Presentation and Coaching courses. In 2005 I created my NLP Business Practitioner, NLP Business Master Practitioner and NLP Business Coach Programmes. I have been delivering these in the UK, UAE and India and since 2020, and I now deliver most of my training online. As we are living in a time of complete disruption, the need for business leaders to develop the mental agility that NLP skills provide, has never been greater. Having spent years refining the use of NLP for business and coaching it's now my passion to train as many people as I can to use theses amazing techniques to help others have more choices and lead the best life they can”   PODCAST DESCRIPTION   Power in Diversity Podcast is a space where professional women from diverse backgrounds, eager to grow as leaders, come to be inspired and gain wisdom from other leaders. As my guests share their journey, I hope that it will give you; an aspiring or established female leader; meaning to your journey, illuminating your path and equipping you with a greater understanding of how to carve and navigate your success pathway with greater ease.  Power in Diversity Podcast is also designed to equip not only individuals but, crucially, organisations who must learn to create diverse and inclusive organisations practically and not merely as a tick box exercise; especially now in this ever-changing world, everyone's diverse insight is vital to solving world issues. I hope that this podcast allows organisations to appreciate the real barriers female and ethnic minority groups face in stepping into leadership, barriers sadly I and many others have faced, and many continue to face.  I'm proud to be British and proud of my African Heritage, my tribe, part of the Benin Empire. I feel blessed to be a woman. This is a non-judgmental space, but a space to learn and to become aware of the gifts and Power in Diversity.   ABOUT THE HOST   Dr Omo Akoje Okonkwo is a practising Cosmetic Dental Surgeon working in Private Clinics in Surrey. Her passion for empowering her patients and team led her to Transformational coaching to bring about significant change in others.  Her many skill sets and ability to motivate people quickly opened leadership roles for her, including Director of Health care Projects and Clinical Lead and Senior Tutor at the prestigious King College Dental Hospital. Along her journey, she faced numerous setbacks despite her passion, academic background and experience.  Notwithstanding, her passion for excellence and growth led her to embark on an MBA at the Renowned Warwick Business School. Her desire to empower women steered her to conduct qualitative research exploring Gender, Leadership, and Identity. Her findings revealed what she had always sensed, the leadership labyrinth for female and ethnic minority leaders that exists. It is now Dr Omo's mission to educate and equip individuals, organisations, and countries on the necessity, mindset, and steps to create inclusion at all levels of society.   CONTACT METHOD    IG: https://www.instagram.com/dr.omo_uk/ LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-omo-okonkwo-65b8a542/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/omo.okonkwo  This show was brought to you by Progressive Media

Think Sahara Desert, think intense heat and drought. We see the Sahara as an unrelenting, frazzling, white place. But geo-archaeologist Dr Judith Bunbury says in the not so distant past, the region looked more like a safari park. In the more recent New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt, from around 3500 years ago (the time of some of Egypt's most famous kings like Ahmose I, Thutmose III, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and queens like Hatshepsut) core samples shows evidence of rainfall, huge lakes, springs, trees, birds, hares and even gazelle, very different from today. By combining geology with archaeology, Dr Bunbury, from the department of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge and Senior Tutor at St Edmund's College, tells Jim al-Khalili that evidence of how people adapted to their ever-changing landscape is buried in the mud, dust and sedimentary samples beneath these ancient sites, waiting to be discovered. The geo-archaeological research by Judith and her team, has helped to demonstrate that the building of the temples at Karnak near Luxor, added to by each of the Pharaohs, was completely dependent on the mighty Nile, a river which, over millennia, has wriggled and writhed, creating new land on one bank as it consumes land on another. Buildings and monuments were adapted and extended as the river constantly changed course.

Louise Hamlin read history and law at Cambridge and then practised as a solicitor. After a career break to have her children, she returned to Cambridge as a law fellow and lecturer, specialising in land law. She was a Tutor and then Senior Tutor of her college. Fifteen years ago, she changed career and moved down to Dorset to start a very happy new life with her second husband, a barrister. She became a potter and she and her husband travelled extensively. When her husband suddenly died two years ago, Louise was grief-stricken and then amazed to find more and more signs from her husband, including extraordinary WhatsApps, showing her that spirit and love survive death. This completely changed her understanding of life and death, and she felt compelled to write a book giving an account of the signs, as well as dealing with bereavement generally. She now lives in Dorset with her spaniel. ------------------------------- Watch Path 11 TV wherever you want, on the iPhone, AppleTV, Android, Amazon Fire, and Roku Apps.

Think Sahara Desert, think intense heat and drought. We see the Sahara as an unrelenting, frazzling, white place. But geo-archaeologist Dr Judith Bunbury says in the not so distant past, the region looked more like a safari park. In the more recent New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt, from around 3.5 thousand years ago (the time of some of Egypt's most famous kings like Ahmose I, Thutmose III, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and queens like Hatshepsut) evidence from core samples shows evidence of rainfall, huge lakes, springs, trees, birds, hares and even gazelle, very different from today. With an augur (like a large apple corer), Judith and her team take core samples (every ten metre sample in Egypt reveals approximately 10,000 years of the past) and then read the historical story backwards. A model of the topography, the environment, the climate and the adapting human settlements can then be built up to enrich the historical record. The core samples contain chipped stones which can be linked directly to the famous monuments and statues in the Valley of the Kings. There are splinters of amethyst from precious stone workshops, tell-tale rubbish dumped in surrounding water as well as pottery fragments which can be reliably time-stamped to the fashion-conscious consumers in the reign of individual Pharaohs. And Judith hopes the detailed, long-range climate records and models we already have, can be enriched with this more detailed history of people, their settlements and their activities within a changing landscape and this will contribute to our ability to tackle climate change. Welcome to our first student-hosted Medicine 360 podcast, in which Dr Nicola Taylor and Dr Bethan John discuss some of the things which can happen when doctors struggle with their health. How does it feel as a medical professional to go to ask help from another medical professional? Do doctors make worse patients? Do doctors and medical students think about their own illnesses differently from non-medical professionals? What barriers are there to medical professionals asking for help? How dangerous to a medical professional's career is mental illness? Or taking time off sick ? How does the GMC regulatory process work? (What should you *really* not do as a student?) How might medical education change to better support trainee doctors? Is the notion of (individual) resilience helpful? What of acceptance and compassion for oneself? What of being ‘good enough'? Nicola Taylor is a consultant liaison psychiatrist at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. She is also a Senior Tutor at Bristol Medical School and so has many years' experience of the difficulties faced by medical students in training. Bethan John is a doctor who has written about her own experience of burnout and mental illness. She was a neurosurgery trainee for six years, and is now about to begin to train as a GP. She continues to learn about mental health and well-being and is keen to focus on this in her future GP career. Find out more on our website: https://bit.ly/3pFhUv3 Fraud is often mistakenly treated as a homogeneous phenomenon, whereas it actually consists of many different stocks and flows of activities and our responses to them. Drawing on work conducted for the British Academy, Economic and Social Research Council and the Australian Institute of Criminology, Professor Mike Levi from Cardiff University examines the evidence on changes in fraud during pandemics and economic crises since Spanish Flu; whether there is good evidence that frauds were particularly impacted by the covid-19 pandemic, either positively or negatively; and what lessons can be learned for our responses to frauds of different types. Speaker: Michael Levi has a distinguished track record of transnational and multidisciplinary research. In particular, he has built an international reputation for excellence in both fundamental and policy-oriented research on money laundering, corruption, cybercrimes, transnational organised crime and white-collar crimes. As part of the taskforce's series of webinars exploring AML, this webinar will be exploring AML Technology. The mandatory compliance requirements set out and enforced by the FCA and other regulators are stricter than ever, but some firms have managed to deliver the regulatory tick box through an un-cumbersome and perhaps even enjoyable experience that stands out in comparison to competitors' offerings. This webinar will provide key insights into what AML/KYC tech can do for financial services firms and will investigate how firms think about meeting compliance requirements by rethinking their systems and the data they capture from the experience layer. We welcome 3 experts from Mastercard, TruNarrative and Digital Identity Network to share their knowledge and experience and the results they have achieved. The speakers will offer their suggestions for how companies can utilise regulatory technology to cut costs, reduce errors and transform their compliance process. Speakers: Dan Johnson is vice president, Identity Products for Mastercard based in London. As part of the taskforce's series of webinars exploring AML, in this webinar we are delighted to welcome Professor Michael Levi, Professor of Criminology at Cardiff University. Professor Levi commenced research on money laundering and compliance in 1988, and is not only the co-author in 2006, of a seminal work on the flow of dirty money inside states and beyond, but also of a recent formative work, with Terrence Halliday and Peter Reuter, on “Why do Transnational Legal Orders Persist? The Curious Case of Money-laundering Controls.” In which they study in detail the rise of AML TLOs, how they work, or don't, the compliance levers and mechanisms, amongst many other variables, and then conclude that whilst it is possible that AML TLOs may eventually collapse, they have survived so far the lack of obvious impact on crime and will likely remain relevant. His insight and foresight will give attendees to the webinar are unique glimpse of what is being done, what is being thwarted and what may need to be done to ensure better, if less bureaucratic, to enable the UK and the City of London, to thrive post Brexit and post Covid, whilst not becoming the main hub for money laundering. Lack of Knowledge Puts Promising Potentials Off Police Work68% don’t believe a career in the police force is accessible to all, almost one in five (18%) people aged 18-24 are put off pursuing a career in policing as they don’t know what job roles are available to them.More than two thirds (68%) of UK adults don’t believe a career in policing is accessible to everyone. Even though the variety of roles are so broad in law enforcement, such as a police officer or constable, behind the scenes as an evidence technician or victim advocate, a custody officer or court reporter, 49% of people still believe it’s a career choice that’s only accessible to a certain group or type of person.Half of all 18-24 year olds surveyed have never considered a career in the police force, with the biggest barriers to joining the profession being the perceived dangerous nature of the role (53%), along with a lack of knowledge on both what roles are available (18%) and the career progression (15%), according to research from The University of Law (ULAW).To tackle this, ULAW have launched a Professional Policing (BSc) degree, allowing students to develop a comprehensive knowledge of possible careers in policing before having to apply, and providing them with a foundation for further study areas such as criminology and law.FE News chat with Salome Verrell, Senior Tutor at ULAW, for more details about how they plan to support the The Police Vision 2025 to develop a professional police workforce, equipped with the skills and capabilities necessary for policing in the 21st century:1. What is the best way for the police service to attract a representative mix of people with the right skills, knowledge and potential, behaviours and values to deliver this policing vision?2. The police force has roles for many other positions than just Police Officers. What are the benefits of creating a culture that values difference and diversity, which empowers individuals, and is more representative of the communities they serve?4. For policing to innovate at the pace required, how can changes to the culture and leadership of the police service best be introduced?5. Recent research has shown that 50 year careers are now becoming the norm, meaning that continuous professional development and lifelong learning are more important than ever. The Book Beyond Brexit: Towards a British Constitution was published by Bloomsbury Press in 2019. Skip Ahead 1:12: Why did you write this book? 2:56: What is the main thesis of this book? What is the main impact of Brexit on the British Constitution? 5:08: Turning to the referendum, which as you say has become, since the issue of being in the EU came on to the agenda, a big part of our constitution and our way of taking decisions, as you show in earlier works you've written, we were actually arguing about whether or not we should introduce a referendum for a long while, as far as the late 19th century… one important proponent of the referendum… wrote an important book on that in the 1920s. And one point he made was that although he was in favour a referendum… he said that “the referendum shall never be used in answer to abstract questions such as ‘are you in favour of a monarchy.' 8:09: What do you think is the reason for the political turbulence that has taken place? You could argue that two prime ministers now have seen their careers destroyed by the referendum. How do you account for that? 10:43: In your estimation do you think that David Cameron learned the lesson in 1975 and felt that he could replicate the same trick that Harold Wilson had pulled off then? 11:52: Moving on to your background, as I said in the introduction you've been talking about the constitution in the UK…for a long while… What first interested you in the constitution? 13:15: Who were your teachers? Who influenced you? 14:52: Would you describe yourself now as a political scientist, historian or something else? 15:36: You mentioned earlier this idea of the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty – the theoretical and practical problems associated with it… and in your book you talk about the possibility that the UK will move towards a written constitution. I'm sensing you think that's a good idea. Do you think it's likely to happen? 18:01: In that kind of scenario, you could potentially see clashes between judges and elected politicians over who actually has the legitimacy to take these kind of decisions. 21:20: You mentioned earlier that one of the reasons for the political turbulence since the referendum was that the people … have a different view to most of the people in parliament and government.  Do you think there are ways to bring them back together? 23:45: We're now on the brink of a new prime minister taking power. Do you see any reason to believe that, whoever that may be, will be more successful than the last two prime ministers were in managing the referendum and the European issue? 25:02: What are you working on next? 25:53: Is it fair to say that that period… the pre-first world war period, which was… a period of constitutional turbulence… is comparable to the one we're in now?

Understanding the Spirit World with Mavis Pittilla World Renowned MediumAired Wednesday, 16 March 2016, 3:00 PM ETMavis’ knowledge and understanding of all aspects of spirituality and mediumship is unrivaled. She is an outstanding leader in this field having been involved for over forty years working throughout the world.Mavis started seeing the Spirit World spontaneously in the 1960’s when she had been given three months to live. From that moment her involvement with Spiritualism and the Spirit World has been total. She is recognised as one of the most experienced and inspirational mediums in Great Britain. She works throughout the country and around the world teaching, lecturing, demonstrating and serving Spirit. She shares the expertise she has gleaned from her teachers in the Spirit World, as well as her friend and mentor, Gordon Higginson, one of the finest UK mediums of the last century and President of the Spiritualist National Union. Introduced by Gordon, Mavis was one of the first people to work at the Arthur Findlay College in London where she became the Senior Tutor.Mavis runs her own hugely successful mentorship programmes in the UK and also on-line programmes for students worldwide. She has also helped train many of the well-known mediums around today who still seek her advice and expertise. Some of her experience has been unique and she has worked with the Kabalic Masters on the shores of Galilee, a rare experience for anyone, but particularly for a woman with the “third eye.” She has demonstrated mediumship in South Africa accompanied by a Soweto choir from the Shanty towns. She also worked in Ireland during the troubles supporting Protestant and Catholic families all feeling the same pain in grief when they had lost loved ones through “religious” fighting. You will be mesmerized and enthralled, as you listen to the depth of her understanding. This reservoir of knowledge encompasses all aspects of mediumship and she has a profound spiritual awareness. She firmly believes that it should not operate without spirituality and is disappointed when she sees this happening.“We should never lose sight of the miracle of communication. Too many people just work from the mind and think that the Spirit are just genies in a bottle who can just be conjured up. They are “real people” and should be treated as such, with respect and dignity”. Mavis has dedicated her life to work on behalf of the Spirit, both the incarnate and discarnate and she firmly believes that a true medium is on a Soul journey not an egotistical adventure. To become a medium requires focus and dedication for many years, just as it does in any other area of expertise. When James D Halloran joined Leicester University in 1958 as Senior Tutor in the Department of Adult Education, ‘mass communication’ was not an academic subject. But the field was changing rapidly: the Coronation had prompted a massive surge in television ownership and the launch of ITV had given people a choice of viewing. Jim Halloran taught evening classes at Vaughan College but found that he ran out of material so developed a module on the Sociology of Communication. This was turned into a paper published in a journal on Catholicism (there being no communications-related journals at that time) and then formed the basis of Halloran’s seminal book Control or Consent: A Study of the Challenge of Mass Communications, published in 1963. That same year, the Home Office set up the Television Research Committee, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of Leicester, Fraser Noble - who appointed Halloran as the Committee Secretary. Initial funding for research at various institutions produced mixed results and confirmed Halloran’s belief that what was needed was a dedicated academic research centre. The Centre for Mass Communication Research at Leicester was consequently established in 1966 under Halloran’s directorship. It attracted a diverse group of academics from various disciplines, reflecting the absence of existing focus on communications research, but fortuitously leading to a multidisciplinary approach which benefited the centre. James Curran, a leading media theorist and author of Power Without Responsibility, has described Leicester as the “original hotbed” of mass communication research. For the first decade or so of the Centre’s existence, all its students were studying for PhDs, many of them drawn from India and other developing nations. Then, in 1978, the Social Science Research Council (predecessor of the ESRC) invited Halloran to design and deliver the UK’s first Masters Degree in media and communications. Thus was born the University of Leicester’s MA in Mass Communications, a degree which is still popular and relevant 35 years on. A distance learning variant was launched in 1995.

Melvyn Bragg discusses the epic feud between Sir Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz over who invented an astonishingly powerful new mathematical tool - calculus. Both claimed to have conceived it independently, but the argument soon descended into a bitter battle over priority, plagiarism and philosophy. Set against the backdrop of the Hanoverian succession to the English throne and the formation of the Royal Society, the fight pitted England against Europe, geometric notation against algebra. It was fundamental to the grounding of a mathematical system which is one of the keys to the modern world, allowing us to do everything from predicting the pressure building behind a dam to tracking the position of a space shuttle.Melvyn is joined by Simon Schaffer, Professor of History of Science at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Darwin College; Patricia Fara, Senior Tutor at Clare College, University of Cambridge; and Jackie Stedall, Departmental Lecturer in History of Mathematics at the University of Oxford.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Newton's Laws of Motion. In 1687 Isaac Newton attempted to explain the movements of everything in the universe, from a pea rolling on a plate to the position of the planets. It was a brilliant, vaultingly ambitious and fiendishly complex task; it took him three sentences. These are the three laws of motion with which Newton founded the discipline of classical mechanics and conjoined a series of concepts - inertia, acceleration, force, momentum and mass - by which we still describe the movement of things today. Newton's laws have been refined over the years – most famously by Einstein - but they were still good enough, 282 years after they were published, to put Neil Armstrong on the Moon. With Simon Schaffer, Professor in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Darwin College; Raymond Flood, University Lecturer in Computing Studies and Mathematics and Senior Tutor at Kellogg College, University of Oxford; Rob Iliffe, Professor of Intellectual History and History of Science at the University of Sussex.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the 19th century mathematician Ada Lovelace. Deep in the heart of the Pentagon is a network of computers. They control the US military, the most powerful army on the planet, but they are controlled by a programming language called Ada. It's named after Ada Lovelace, the allegedly hard drinking 19th century mathematician and daughter of Lord Byron. In her work with Charles Babbage on a steam driven calculating machine called the Difference Engine, Ada understood, perhaps before anyone else, what a computer might truly be. As such the Difference Engine is the spiritual ancestor of the modern computer.Ada Lovelace has been called many things - the first computer programmer and a prophet of the computer age – but most poetically perhaps by Babbage himself as an ‘enchantress of numbers'.With Patricia Fara, Senior Tutor at Clare College, Cambridge; Doron Swade, Visiting Professor in the History of Computing at Portsmouth University; John Fuegi, Visiting Professor in Biography at Kingston University.
