Edmonton's pop-punk powerhouse Real Sickies are set to release their fifth full-length album, Under a Plastic Bag, on March 14, 2025, via Stomp Records. The album's first advance single, “Triage,” is out now, offering an electrifying glimpse into the band's knack for blending raw punk energy with sharp, melodic hooks. Known for their relentless touring and infectious anthems, Real Sickies have cemented their status as a standout act in the global punk scene, with even Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day calling them his favorite Canadian punk band. “Triage” embodies the chaos and resilience central to the band and their new album. Inspired by a harrowing car accident Ben Disaster and his family survived after returning from a European tour, the track reflects a surreal mix of panic and perseverance. After their car flipped on black ice, Ben and his wife emerged unharmed, finding their dogs casually on the highway. “As much as we wanted to go home, we went ice fishing as the shock wore off,” Ben recalls. This experience fueled the song, which took shape under producer Joshua Wells. “Josh really helped bring it to life. It wasn't complete until we let it out in the studio—it's chaos, but real. It asks, ‘What do you fix first?'” The accompanying video, directed by Jesse Nash, adds frenetic creativity with miniature models handcrafted by Ben, including a matchstick airplane and a glitter-covered Titanic. “It was so much fun,” Ben says. “Alvin and Snobs—our two stars—were tough but nailed it. The process also made me reflect on the album's environmental themes. We documented it all to avoid repeating it. The video is a deep dive into the psyche, asking again, ‘What do you fix first?'” This new album also marks a shift in the band's sonic landscape, embracing new wave, power pop, and indie influences. The band recorded with renowned producer Josh Wells (Autogramm, Black Mountain), who is known for using classic gear and recording equipment to capture the true essence of these genres. Wells' stamp is all over the album, shaping its sound with his meticulous approach to creating authentic new wave textures and power pop hooks. Discussing the first single, Wells said, “This song reminds me, at first, of being on adderall. Random thoughts, itchy eyes, the urge to rock really fast. But then, the song settles into a sick, focused motorik jam. Here we get some alien percussion floating down from another universe to join in and rocket ahead. For a moment, the human jam fuses with the aliens, but then the relationship deteriorates, the humans get mad and break out, the whole thing ending with a total meltdown.” D I S C O V E RBandcamp: https://realsickies.bandcamp.com/Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/realsickies/Youtube:https://youtube.com/stomprecordscanadaLabel: https://stomprecords.com/bands/real-sickies/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/@therealsickies/Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/artist/69zOtixHikb7pSLZGKYYRN?si=GZODBBr-TIaaF7n5d33HFA This Episode is brought to you by..Go to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Checkout my YouTube Channel with long form interviews from the Subversives | the History of Lowest of the Low. Chicago psych-rock band Spun Out have just released their second LP Dream Noise, out October 25th via Shuga Records, and shared the lead single/video “Paranoia.” Consisting of former NE-HI members Michael Wells (guitar, vocals) and James Weir (keys), plus the addition of Sean Page (synths), Joshua Wells (drums, recording, mixing), and Chris Sutter (bass), Spun Out create melancholic psych-pop bliss full of lush mesmerizing grooves, with a keen ear for studio experimentation. Lead single “Paranoia” furthers that. Inspired by a time when Wells was taken out by a rip tide in the Pacific, the song is about the feeling of trying to remain calm physically despite not being able to control what's around you. “Lyrically, I was trying to convey how dreams overlap into real life and vice versa,” explains Wells.  “I got taken out by a rip tide in the Pacific a few years back and that feeling of trying to remain calm physically while not being in control of your surroundings definitely informed the psychology of the tune, as well as the twists and turns of the production style.” The video was directed by Tim Nagle, and shows Wells watching grainy VHS footage that gets increasingly unsettling, creating an atmosphere that lives up to the track's title. Dream Noise is an intentionally more honed and curated collection of songs than Spun Out's debut, Touch the Sound (2020, Shuga). It takes the band's collaborative spirit and sense of maximalist experimentation established in their debut and vacuum seals these ideas into tightly arranged, hooky pop gems. Sonically, the production style of the record remains refreshing, surprising and unto themselves compared to other indie music contemporaries. Lyrically, Spun Out finds new depth of emotion in directness, spruced up by memorable double entendres and turns of phrase. The hooks are smart and poetic, but never boring. Dream Noise emphasizes the performance and character of the band as live performers more than the exploratory studio templates of the debut, bringing a new element of warmth and naturalness to their sound. Vancouver, BC — Chronic Fatigue, Vancouver's emerging powerhouse in the punk scene, announces the self-release of their second EP, Surrender To Serenity, dropping on November 15th, 2024. Known for their high-octane performances and raw punk ethos, Chronic Fatigue takes a bold sonic leap with this self-produced release, blending their punk roots with influences from post-punk, metal, and experimental hip-hop to create a uniquely immersive sound. This EP was completely self-produced and sees the band expanding from its straight-forward punk rock origins, expanding their sound to include the sounds of post punk, metal, and most importantly, hip hop. The process of writing and recording these four songs was much more collaborative than in the past, and leaning into vocalist Sam Patterson's affinity for and love of experimental hip hop - most notable JPEGMAFIA, Danny Brown and Death Grips - gives the EP an energetic, vibrant sound that feels fresh while still maintaining adhering to the band's central sonic identity.  For the four members of Chronic Fatigue - Patterson, guitarist Sean Wilson, bassist Dylan Bondy and drummer Quinn Letendre - the live experience is everything. The band has quickly made a name for themselves, built an ever-growing fanbase and garnered a strong reputation in their local Vancouver music scene as one of the city's most exciting new live acts thanks to their explosive, high energy, and interactive live shows. With Surrender To Serenity, the band strove to capture the intensity, energy, and pure fun of their live shows, while simultaneously pushing their songwriting chops forward. The result is a blistering four tracks filled with hard hitting punk grooves, intricate and confident vocal delivery of lyrics that range from optimistic to introspective to straight up silly, and a sharp blend of hip hop and punk that packs a punch and demands to be witnessed in person.  For these new tracks, the band also looked outside their musical influences, citing skate culture as a major influence on their songwriting.  “None of us are big time skaters, but our videographer and photographer Liam Tait grew up and started getting into photography and videography in that space. He's had a huge influence on us. He showed me a ton of old skate videos, and I fell in love with the music and the vibes right away. There's a very distinct parallel between punk rock and skating. Obviously pop punk, hardcore and punk have been intertwined with skate videos and games for a long time, but it goes beyond that. Both are tight-knit communities of often rejected outcasts, who are usually misunderstood and pushed aside as a nuisance, when all we wanna do is hang out together, have fun and make a bit of noise!”  Photo Credit: Mungo Dulmage    D I S C O V E R Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@ChronicFatigueBandTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@chronic.fatigue.bandInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/chronic.fatigue.band/Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/artist/6L5nh6JnemjTKRxLDbYNTg?si=MkbWzqSYT7qkaR-N2b2ZVQ This episode is brought to you byGo to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Checkout my YouTube Channel with long form interviews from the Subversives | the History of Lowest of the Low. Joel Wasson of The Discarded

The father-and-sons trio, The Discarded, are back with their sixth full-length studio album, The Green Door, set to release on November 25, 2024. Leading the album is the energetic first single, "Testify!"—a fiery rock anthem that channels the band's signature intensity and passion set for release on October 16th, 2024. The song originated from a jam session between guitarist JP Wasson and his son, Caden, and was further transformed by bassist Jared Wasson's live performances. "Testify!" stands out for its Southern preacher vibe, mixed with the driving force of punk, and topped off with the iconic line: "Brothers and sisters I need you to testify!"  The song evolved when bassist Jared introduced a fresh, vibrant bassline during live performances, diverging from the original recording. “Jared's live counter riff added a completely new dimension to the song,” JP explains. Inspired by this new energy, the band re-recorded the track to capture the heightened intensity. Guitarist Michael McKenzie contributed intricate riffs that mesh with Jared's bass, adding a groove reminiscent of the ‘60s "Day Tripper" vibe, while Carmen Toth's background vocals give the track a full, resonant quality. The Green Door highlights The Discarded's evolving sound, merging the grit of garage rock with the punch of punk and elements of classic rock. The album was produced by John Critchley, whose work with artists like Elliott BROOD and Dan Mangan adds a polished yet vibrant feel to the record. Michael McKenzie, a standout figure in the Canadian rock scene, was integral to shaping the album's sonic identity. From touring North America with Universal Honey and supporting acts like The Goo Goo Dolls, The Tragically Hip, and Alanis Morissette, to playing with The Lowest of The Low and The New Mendicants, McKenzie's versatile background shines through on The Green Door.  This album marks another bold step in The Discarded's evolution. Recorded at Green Door Studios, it embodies a powerful fusion of garage rock, old-school punk, metal, and '60s/'70s rock influences. With production and mixing by John Critchley, the ten original tracks on The Green Door deliver a high-energy experience that compels listeners to move. The album also features standout contributions from Michael McKenzie on guitar, Carmen Toth on background vocals, and Lee Rose of Ace of Wands, whose heavy metal violin adds a unique twist. The striking cover art by illustrator Rachael Muir complements the album's bold and eclectic sound      D I S C O V E R Website: https://www.thediscarded.ca/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thediscarded16Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4Pya3sMf2HDP5Yw7ubZNkb?si=yErcmvaERSmJ5OuSr-iQagYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpuiBO0iPWRbFR6f3MvxBtg/videos This episode is brought to you byGo to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop

Antoine Arvizu is the studio owner and manager, recording and producing most of the artists that come to us for that “Compound Sound”. Some artists and producers of note include:  Chicano Batman, Ryan Bingham (Grammy and Oscar winner for Crazy Heart), Marc Ford (The Black Crowes, Ben Harper, Booker T. Jones), Ikey Owens (Free Moral Agents, Jack White, The Mars Volta), Jay Buchanan (Rival Sons)… Arvizu began his music career as a drummer in the late 70s/early 80s as punk rock morphed into an alternative art rock. A founding member of Dr. Dream Records recording artists National Peoples Gang, he toured internationally before disbanding in the mid-90s; sharing the stage with such iconic bands as The Flaming Lips, Nirvana, Soundgarden, fIREHOSE and many more during those early days of "indie rock". A recording career began in 1991 at the now defunct The Toledo studio in Long Beach engineering for Sublime, Rocket From The Crypt, Big Drill Car and many more. Later in the nineties he was a founding member of the Delta Blues group Bourbon Jones, earning the moniker Two Drum Tony, famous for simply playing the 26″ Radio King bass drum and cowhide snare, digging deep into the second line style of New Orleans blues and swing. It was in 1998 that Antoine had the opportunity to engineer at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. The list of fine artists that come through those studios is staggering, to name a few: Paul McCartney, The JB's, Richard Carpenter, Elliot Smith, Faith Hill… and the list of world class engineers and producers is outrageous; education through osmosis. In 2003, happy to finally have a studio to truly call home, Antoine joined The Compound Studio to help create “An Organic Recording Experience". Vancouver pop-punk supergroup Precursor is set to ignite the music scene once again with their latest full-length album, "Thick & Thin," scheduled for release on August 9th, 2024. Known for their eclectic blend of punk, skatepunk, softcore, melodic hardcore, and pop punk influences, Precursor promises fans an exhilarating musical journey reminiscent of bands like The Story So Far, Kid Dynamite, Piebald, A Wilhelm Scream, Daggermouth, Carpenter, and Gob. Originally conceived as a defiant response to the prevailing indie trends, Precursor emerged as a side project uniting talents from Stuart McKillop (Daggermouth/End This Week with Knives), Daniel Sioui (Carpenter/All State Champion), Andy Lewis (The Fullblast), and Blaine McNamee (In Bear Country). Drawing inspiration from the hardcore punk ethos of the 1990s, the band quickly garnered attention for their high-energy performances and unapologetically raw attitude. "Thick & Thin" represents a significant milestone for Precursor, capturing the essence of their evolution over the years. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Stuart McKillop at Rain City Mastering, with drums tracked at Rain City Recorders, the album is a testament to the band's commitment to authenticity and sonic excellence. Vocalist Daniel Sioui's lyrics delve into personal struggles and poignant reflections, shaped by the challenges of middle age and the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Daniel Sioui candidly shares, “This album sucked to make. It took months of starts and stops because life gets in the way when you are married, almost 50 years old and have 3 kids. Imagine driving to the burbs on random Sunday mornings before your kids' dance class, violin or soccer practices to scream your head off in a garage. It wasn't hard to be pissed off. I lost a few friends to suicide leading up to the recording and you can hear it. Spent months of nights scrawling lyrics in bed. Thick & Thin was the hardest album for me to make in my 35 years of recording. There were times Stu would have me completely rewrite songs…both lyrics and melodies. A total redo. It always yielded a better result and he was right to do it but it really beat me down at times. I'm so proud of the record now but there were many days I didn't know if I could finish it. I don't have too many more records in me so I'm happy it's released out into the wild. Just need my kids to grow up before I can play it for them.” The addition of Gabe Mantle (Gob/Brand New Unit) on drums and Travis Hein (Neck of the Woods) on second guitar and backing vocals injected new vitality into Precursor, propelling the band to new heights of creativity and intensity. "Thick & Thin" not only showcases the band's musical prowess but also serves as a personal testament to resilience and artistic vision. Released on Gold Stock Records, "Thick & Thin" is poised to captivate both long-time fans and new listeners alike with its infectious melodies, explosive energy, and thought-provoking lyricism. As Precursor prepares to unleash their latest offering into the world, anticipation is high for a record that promises to leave an indelible mark on the punk rock landscape. Sudden Death Records and Roots Round Up are pleased to announce the release of "Up Rooted," the 6th full-length album from one of Vancouver's long-time music scene veterans. The album was recorded by Stephen Hamm at Simian Studios in Burnaby, BC, with final mixing and mastering by renowned Canadian music producer Chris Wardman. "Up Rooted" features 12 tracks, including six new original songs, a cover of DOA's classic "War in the East," a unique take on the Sarcastic Mannequins' "Red Fury," and four live recordings from a performance on Denman Island, BC, in June 2023. According to member David Hathaway, “Roots Round Up has always been more about the live shows than the recorded output, but capturing that in a recording has proved elusive. The live songs were captured at our first full show after the pandemic had settled down, and we were more than a little excited to be playing again. Especially on Denman Island where we have played many times over the years. We had gotten an audio feed from Chris Wardman's mix of the show and as we listened back the next day, we thought "wait a minute… this came out well!" In addition to finally capturing their live sound, the album also captures Roots Round Up's distinctive and eclectic sound, blending rock'n roll, reggae, ska, afro-beat, folk, funk, and punk. Roots Round Up has a storied history in the Canadian music scene, with band members Greg Hathaway, David "Dymitri" Hanna, David Hathaway, Keith Rose, Mark Campbell, Eric Napier, and Bradford Lambert contributing to their high-energy, globe-spanning sound. Formed in 1985 in East Vancouver, the band became widely known throughout Canada during the late '80s and early '90s as one of the hardest working and touring worldbeat dance bands. Formed out of the hardcore punk scene in Vancouver in 1985 but included elements of reggae, ska, and old school rock'n roll in their sound. Original drummer Barry Taylor (1985 - 2021) was a member of first generation punk band the Young Canadians / K-Tels and then Shanghai Dog.  Greg and Bradford were both drummers in second generation punk bands the Unknown Fibres and House of Commons, who both played shows with Shanghai Dog. Their extensive touring across Canada and the Western U.S., coupled with numerous independent recordings like "Get Rooted," "What We Do," and "Syzygy," cemented their place in the music scene. The Meringues (Kingston, ON) are a post-punk powerhouse known for their explosive live shows and captivating stage presence. At the heart of The Meringues are Amanda Pants and Ted Evans sharing lead vocals. Their onstage antics create a captivating dynamic that blurs the line between playful banter and an intense rivalry. This unique interaction has become a defining characteristic of the band and their live shows. The Meringues also feature Jackson Baird on bass, and Alastair Morrison on drums. The two provide a solid foundation to complement and support Ted and Amanda's electrifying presence.  The band's intense delivery of each song creates a thrilling atmosphere where the entire show can seem like it's about to spiral out of control. However, beneath all the chaos lies a band with a clear vision and purpose. The Meringues craft their music with a blend of catchy, memorable melodies and fiercely sharp lyrics, showcasing their focused energy and artistic prowess. Their lyrics and song content strike to the core of relationship dysfunction, as well as the prevalence of self-doubt and darkness that exist within so many of us. Their sophomore album, Pavlova's Dog, explores the intersection The Meringues have created at fun and dysfunction. Spanning from deep and dark psychological themes to playful, child-like perspectives, the album features 11 songs that weave these elements together artistically and coherently. Vancouver's Stephen Hamm Theremin Man has just released his sophomore album Songs for the Future with the accompanying video “Planet Earth”. Following the critical acclaim of his debut album, Theremin Man, this latest offering promises a thrilling journey into the realms of electro-rock. Songs for the Future explores themes ranging from isolation and hope to science fiction and fantasy. Each track invites listeners on a cosmic voyage through sound and emotion, with a nod to interdimensional and intergalactic entities. Building on the sonic landscapes established in the first album Theremin Man, Hamm's new album expands his artistic vision. From ethereal melodies to pulsating rhythms, each composition is meticulously crafted to transport audiences to new dimensions. "I'm excited to share Songs for the Future with everyone," says Hamm. "This album represents a new chapter in my creative journey. Unlike the first Theremin Man album, which was a solo effort, I also had some great help with this new album from Shawn Mrazek (Flash Bastard, The Evaporators) on drums and Felix Fung (Pointed Sticks, Colleen Rennison, Mode Modern) on guitar and production.” Stephen Hamm has been a pivotal member of the Vancouver Music and Arts scene for over 25 years. He's played bass, keyboards and sang in bands like Slow, Tankhog, Canned Hamm and Nardwuar And The Evaporators. Today, Stephen is Theremin Man, a space traveler and storyteller who sends waves of good vibes and dance beats out to his followers, affectionately known as “The Space Family”. Since stalking the Pacific Northwest with his legendary rock bands, Stephen has shifted his focus to mastering the Theremin, an early electronic instrument that one does not touch but plays by interacting with magnetic fields around two antennae. In recent years Stephen has studied under the tutelage of German Theremin virtuoso Carolina Eyck and New York based Thereminist Dorit Chrysler. Stephen's solo show, based around Theremin and Synthesizer is a psychedelic electro musical journey into new abstract dimensions of sound. Photo Credit: Ryan M. Universal Paperclips (2017) was created by Frank Lantz of New York University and has been acclaimed as one of the best of the genre. It features a unique retelling of the paperclip maximizer thought experiment. SPACEPLAN (2017) was developed by Jake Hollands and published by Devolver Digital and features striking visuals and a relaxing synth-heavy soundtrack. Finally, (the) Gnorp Apologue (2023) is the game that spurred the conversation on idle games to begin with and as its description states: “is a game where you help small beings called gnorps get rich”. Its also quite visually interesting any layers in some unique ‘management game' style mechanics. Recorded in the dead of winter in a newly constructed studio at the former residence of controversial Edmonton photographer Con Boland, the month-long project was the result of what the sound might be if there was a collaboration between Elliott Smith and Massive Attack. Long gone are the bluesy-punk sounds of Sparrow's first band the Murder City Sparrows. Sparrow tells the story. “Eight records in fifteen years… Some came easy, others were a struggle. ‘Hard Eight' is a little of both. I fell in love and found the woman I am to marry since my last record came out in 2020. You can hear a little of what that sounds like in some of the songs. The act of writing music feels like sitting under an attic hatch far above your body, you close your eyes and the hatch opens, falling through the crack are particles of dusty creative moments, if I am positioned correctly with instrument in hand, they land on me, some I even reach out and catch. They aren't mine, I don't know where they come from but if I am ready and available, I can usher them into existence. I make music because I have to, the rest of life is elective." The Anti-Queens, Toronto's premiere punk rock 'n' rollers, have just announced their latest LP, "Disenchanted," with an advance single and video for the track "Doomed Again". The new album will appear worldwide on digital and vinyl formats via Stomp Records on May 17th, 2024. For over a decade, The Anti-Queens have been a prominent force in Toronto's music scene. The Anti-Queens are led by the fiercely talented and dynamic duo of Emily Bones and Valerie Knox, who bring a punk-rock energy that challenges the male-dominated music industry. Known for their electrifying live performances, they've gained a reputation for their unstoppable energy and powerful stage presence. Their latest album, "Disenchanted," continues their tradition of crafting infectious, hook-laden anthems that will surely delight fans of Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, The Distillers, Hole, L7, Lunachicks, and The Warning. The advance single “Doomed Again” embodies the essence of blistering 1977 punk, infused with just the right touch of Bad Religion and Green Day to keep it fresh and driving. The Anti-Queens skillfully pay tribute to their enduring punk roots while injecting enough energy to keep it from feeling derivative.Featuring lyrics that intertwine defiance with sincerity, razor-sharp hooks, and a musical style that epitomizes the essence of "rock 'n' roll," The Anti-Queens are back with a vengeance. The music video for the advance single "Doomed Again" showcases the band immersed in a passionate performance, accompanied by two wild ghost figures driving around town before landing in a rehearsal space to join the rock-out session. Directed by Emily Bones and Michael Crusty, and produced by Crusty Media and Stomp Records, the video captures the energy of the song. Filmed by Michael Crusty and Sarah Mathieson, with editing by Michael Crusty and performance lighting by Jefferson Sheppard, the video stars Valerie Knox, Emily Bones, Michael Crusty, and Sara Fellin. The lyrics of "Doomed Again" resonate with the struggle and resilience of pursuing dreams amidst life's challenges, reflecting on the enduring nature of aspirations formed in youth. Despite facing obstacles, the song encourages perseverance and embracing life's journey, recognizing that setbacks contribute to memorable narratives. Band member Valerie Knox said, “Doomed Again is a love letter to all the bands out there who never stop doing the grind. There's almost always something that can and will go wrong, but it's never dull being in a rock n' roll band”. They filmed the music video in Ajax and Oshawa, Ontario. The jam space is one of the actual places they rehearse, jazzed up with added lights and a slew of Easter eggs in the background—old show flyers, banners, photos, stickers, and merch. “While we did our best to plan everything, we still ended up crafting our ghost costumes until 4 am just before the jam space shoot, all while a massive blizzard swept through. The Stephen Stanley Band's is happy to introduce their new album, Before The Collapse Of The Hive (Wolfe Island Records). It's an album brimming with raw, unflinching urgency, steadfast observation and soul-searching storytelling that highlights Stephen's immediate world: those he loves, and those he's lost.  Recording the album on on Wolfe Island became an integrated life experience. Start and stop times were not regimented. “Often, we'd go and play a set at the Hotel Wolfe Island (co-owned by album producer and album contributor, Hugh Christopher Brown) and recording would just take place around the timing of the show.” Except for Kate Fenner, Michael Blake and Ron Hawkins, outside of his band, everyone who played on the new record lives on Wolfe Island. A wonderful stable of players and singers, deeply affected the sound of this new work, produced again, by Hugh Christopher Brown. The Stephen Stanley Band's internationally acclaimed record, Jimmy & the Moon (2017), saw Stephen and his band going into the studio with a clutch of songs they had spent a long time pre-producing. Before The Collapse Of The Hive was very different. Due to long periods of time where no one could get together, six songs on this record were entirely new, starting off with acoustic guitar and vocals and building the songs from there. If Jimmy & the Moon was loosely written about Toronto and the changes the city has gone through in his time, this album looks deeper at our collective place in a world seemingly falling apart. It's a continued conversation between Stephen and his close friend and beloved radio enigma, Dave Bookman, whom Stephen shared the loss of, just prior to starting to work on these songs – two of which are in honour of that friendship and reflecting on the time spent finding the words for such an unexpected goodbye. “‘Before the Collapse of the Hive' – man, that title means so many different things to me as I write this. Some of which will be obvious, others which are mine alone. These short, narrative pieces, tied together with first-time author Sean Barrette's memories of a life and career spent immersed in music, tell a story that demonstrates that, no matter the guitar player, they all have this first guitar story and love to tell it. Following a trail of back-to-back hits and raw, defiant anthems, Lone Kodiak drops their latest single, "Werewolf Girl," serving as both a capstone to an already remarkable year and an omen of what's to come. No better evidence of that can be found in the fact that the band enjoyed yet another premiere yesterday, this time with Vents Magazine. Known for their propulsive innovation and artful musings, the East LA quartet continues their ascent into the echelons of alternative rock. Emerging from the depths of a transformative creative process that birthed hits like "Corner Booth" and "Let's Hear It For The Kid," Lone Kodiak taps into a new level of musical maturation. Leaning into their proven versatility—inspired by iconic bands such as The Cure, Hum, and The Smashing Pumpkins—the group yet again redefines the auditory experience. If David Lynch ever wanted a soundtrack for the Twilight Zone of his dreams, "Werewolf Girl" would undoubtedly be his first choice. With a vibe that pays homage to b-movie horror and camp, the track unfolds like a rip-roaring cinematic escapade—fasten your seatbelt; it's a wild ride. It's as if Lone Kodiak decided to transmute every pulpy corner of pop culture into a kaleidoscope of brilliant melodies and choruses. The song is a synthesis of delirious fun and thoughtful reflection. In a surprising twist, the bridge offers a pause in the mayhem—a nuanced, emotional interlude that amplifies the band's signature aesthetic, akin to the sweeping grandeur of Band of Horses or Muse. But this is not a band to let you drift off into sonic nirvana. They pull you back down to earth with the gritty, grounding influences of Deftones and Young Widows, culminating in a haunting denouement that all but begs you to join in its moonlit lament. he release of "Werewolf Girl" is not just another single but a momentous step in Lone Kodiak's burgeoning legacy. Recorded at Big Bad Sound in Los Angeles, and produced by Kyle Mangels, the single captures the raw, elemental spirit that has propelled them onto the watchlist of anyone who knows anything about the future of rock. Join Lone Kodiak as they take a monumental stride into a future teeming with promise and sonic exploration. CLONE is a female-fronted collective of musicians from various eclectic backgrounds who bonded over their shared love of 70's rock, specifically glam rock. Nods to T-Rex, Suzi Quatro, The Runaways, Sweet, New York Dolls, and Iggy and the Stooges inspire their catalog of rock anthems that fuse punk with glitter and power with pop. CLONE was created by guitarist Kelly Zombor and front woman Juniper Watters with the remainder of the band consisting of refreshingly experienced musicians: Lee Forrester (lead guitar), Gil Forrester (bass) and Jack Guppy (drums). They share a unique ability to connect with their inner alter egos who come out to play on stage. As David Bowie once said, “Freedom is born in the realms of eccentricity” and CLONE illuminates this beautifully. They have been a favorite pick on SiriusXM's Rodney Bingenheimer Show and on Internet radio including Dandy's Stardust Dive. CLONE has been DIY since the beginning - producing their first EP in 2020 along with four music videos which they wrote, directed, designed, photographed and edited thanks to decades of experience as working technicians in the BC film industry. In March 2023, CLONE recorded their second album, again with Eric Mosher at The Warehouse Studios in Vancouver,  the first single “Queen” and accompanying video are scheduled for release on July 17th, 2023. Oakland California's The Goods have just announced the release of their debut self-titled EP on Dandy Boy Records with an accompanying video for the song “David Jones Is Dead.” The Goods combine big guitars, huge hooks, and sweet British Invasion-style harmonies into a distinctive power pop tapestry on their debut. Self-produced in the band's own studio in Oakland, CA, The Goods' debut EP draws on decades of hooky punk and power pop from the 1960s through the 1990s. The three song 7" (with an exclusive fourth digital track) combines classic influences and timeless sounds with a fresh and playful energy. The lead single and video “David Jones Is Dead” calls to mind the band's songwriting influences both new and old; Redd Kross, Young Guv, Tom Petty, Matthew Sweet, The Jam, Green Day and Cheap Trick. Reflecting on the process of writing “David Jones Is Dead” singer and guitarist Rob Good had to say, “I set out to write the shortest song I possibly could, all killer no filler, every bit of fat around the edges trimmed off. Lyrically, I was thinking about all these rock and roll icons that are now dying, and how their death brings up so many emotions - not only remorse for the loss of the person, but also nostalgia about the good times you had with their music and the friends you enjoyed it with. Ultimately it's a celebration of that music and those good times.” Avoiding retro-revivalism, The Goods' music is earnest and unironic, with just enough grit and muscle to balance its sugary sweetness. Dandy Boy label owner Bobby Martinez describes the connection between himself and singer/guitarist Rob Good, “I'm a big power pop fan and he was writing huge power pop songs. Not in a bleached hair/ leather jacket/ Buzzcocks way or a straight college radio/ 90's alt way- but somewhere in between. There's an element of Redd Kross camp over Cheap Trick timelessness that adds this level of fun and cheekiness. It never feels too serious or posturing yet avoids going full on cornball cartoon band. It's completely self aware and doesn't fall into some retro revival affectation. Rather than trying to duplicate classic power pop from the late 70's or 90's “left-of-the-dial” underground, they manage to sound organic. It's power pop by guys who grew up learning their instruments by listening to Green Day and the Descendents and playing in punk bands. Guys who spent their formative years with Lemonheads and Jam CDs in their cars.” Photo credit: Corey Poluk D I S C O V E R Twitter: https://twitter.com/the_goods_music Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/the_goods_music/  Apple: http://itunes.apple.com/album/id/1690163263  Bandcamp: https://dandyboyrecords.bandcamp.com/album/e-p  This episode is brought to you byGo to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop Go get the 1 hour mini Documentary on Lowest of the Low's Classic Album Shakespeare my Butt at https://thelowdoc.gumroad.com/l/SMB

The Vanrays have just released their latest long-player “Put It Out” with an accompanying video for the album's focus track “Hard Times.” The band carries on with their tradition of belting out undeniably catchy Motown and Soul tunes with big hooks, big melodies and an even bigger brass section. Taking notes from classics and contemporaries like Spencer Davis group, Detroit Cobras, Curtis Harding and the Daptone Records roster, The Vanrays have delivered an album of soulful classic R&B and garage music.  Their bio reads like a manifesto for their brand of music: It's a Motown beat down in a sharkskin suit. It's wailing like it's gospel while they're laying in the boots. It's a curb stomping rhythm on the corner of control. It's a nod in the direction, when all shoes had leather souls. And to when those shoes were twisting, to Otis and to James. And so now do, The Vanrays too, we are here to do the same.  The video for “Hard Times” was directed by Carleen Kyle and shot at the Wise Hall during the pandemic and in the middle of the heat dome. Piano and organ player Gordon Rempel describes the scenario, “We were happy for the space and air conditioning! The objective was to bring a more intimate “performance” video than a regular live video. Thus, setting the performance on the floor rather than the stage.”  Overall the album touches on themes of love and heartache which seems to tie the songs together. Bassist Phil Adington laments, “We never intended for this to be a concept album, but for me all of the songs involve love and relationships and the order they appear on the record does seem to map out a passionate, tempestuous affair that ultimately ends in heartbreak." The recording sessions for Put it Out began just before the onset of the pandemic, when the world went into lockdown. Rempel reflected on the time by saying, “It's been a journey. We were forced to adapt. With only bed tracks recorded before the lockdown, we were forced to improvise. We remotely finished a couple songs as demos compete with Zoom-like videos that we released as "The Social Distanced Demos" on Bandcamp. Slowly, we completed recording the album, instrument by instrument together and apart. I recorded many of my organ and piano parts in my garage studio. Others ventured into Brian's studio to record their parts with masks and social distancing. Scott Fletcher, producer of the Put It Out shared his take on the experience, “My shared vision as producer of this record was to tip our collective hat to the classic 60s and 70s Soul and R&B from stax records, without being a museum piece. Music is an organic, living, growing thing and I truly believe we took this genre to a new place. Recording a 9 piece band is no easy task at the best of times, but we tried to preserve the “live off the floor” feel while staying socially distanced in the studio. The Vanrays, needless to say, became my bubble. If I were to put it in a nutshell, I would say recording Put It Out got us through the tense times of the pandemic.” Photo credit: Carleen Kyle D I S C O V E R Twitter: https://twitter.com/thevanrays Website: https://www.thevanrays.com Tiktok: https://tiktok.com/@thevanrays Youtube: https://youtube.com/@thevanrays Instagram: https://instagram.com/thevanrays Bandcamp: https://thevanrays.bandcamp.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheVanrays Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/ca/artist/the-vanrays/1459548971 Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/artist/4OHvMeSKrLp6Kc8yLejjhW?si=OllAq_DIR0qQRB5czemAiw This episode is brought to you byGo to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop Go get the 1 hour mini Documentary on Lowest of the Low's Classic Album Shakespeare my Butt at https://thelowdoc.gumroad.com/l/SMB

Vancouver record label Nerve Wracking Collections has just released their latest EP Coulrophobia, a collaborative concept project that includes Vancouver synthpunk bands, Phuture Memoriez and Jibbernaut. The concept involved choosing a theme and releasing a 4 song split EP with another band. This was an opportunity for NWC to expand and have many artists join their collective. Coulrophobia is the first split EP release derived from this project which revolves around the fear of clowns. The guidelines were kept simple so that each band could make their songs their own. They involved creating two new songs that followed the lyrical theme and a desire to release the EP along with a co-headline live show. Phuture Memoriez is a dark synth-pop-punk band from Vancouver BC and is composed of Marc Blaquiere and Jessica Blaquiere, while Jibbernaut consists of local punks “Gears” and “Hammer”. The songs on the EP are short, fast, visceral blasts that are rooted in early punk and hardcore and have elements of Kraut rock and foundational industrial music. Each track is an explosion, an expression of internal turmoil and angst against discordant hooks and symphonic feedback. “Gears”, singer of Jibbernaut, reflected on the inception of the EP, “When Phuture Memoriez approached us about the Coulrophobia project it appealed instantly. There's something inherently terrifying about clowns. The clown archetype has inhabited the cultural psyche for centuries and the idea of someone transformed into a painted/costumed character for the purpose of amusement holds within it the possibility for unfathomable darkness. We performed a week-long ceremony in our Vancouver compound as preparation for writing these two songs. After those seven days of fasting and sacrificial offerings our namesake, the demon Jibbernaut, appeared holding the pale severed head of a clown in its claws. We got to work immediately in a frenzied state of inspiration and 48 hours later we had “Clown School” and “No One's Laughing Now”. Then we ordered deep fried wontons and tantan noodles and slept for three days.” D I S C O V E R TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jibbernautband?lang=ko-KR Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/phuturememoriez/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Jibbernaut/100092412352065/ Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/phuturememoriez/?hl=en Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/jibber_naut/ Bandcamp: https://phuturememoriez1.bandcamp.com/music Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@nervewrackingcollections5277/featured Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0xX7HI6zFKn6Y5FDKwN8K9?si=xjSBNimsTteBzSS63qBzWA&nd=1 Go to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop Go get the 1 hour mini Documentary on Lowest of the Low's Classic Album Shakespeare my Butt at https://thelowdoc.gumroad.com/l/SMB

The Projectors have just released their debut self-titled LP on Sakamano Records with an accompanying video for the song “Golden Age”. The Projectors began with a new batch of songs  that prolific singer/songwriter Dylan Rysstad was writing in 2019.  According to Rysstad, “With the first couple songs, ‘When the Lights Came Up' and ‘Golden Age', I really embraced certain influences and didn't try to obscure or hide the  fact that it was starting to sound like someone else. The songs I've been writing for this  project are what I want to be playing and listening to, and somewhat ironically, I feel like  it's the most ‘me' if that makes sense.” That “someone else” Dylan is referring to is The Strokes — an apt point of reference for  both their live show and recorded output. The rest of the songs that make up the album,  recorded at Layten Kramer's home studio, came in bursts of inspiration after putting a band together to play this new material. Unsurprisingly, the pandemic and ensuing  lockdowns/safety precautions delayed the album's completion and release date. Lead single "Golden Age" is a danceable and upbeat examination of modern romance and relationships: “And it's okay  that you don't write me back. It's only been forever. And it's okay, it's the golden age of indifference. So what's the difference now?” It's a perfect summer anthem that evokes a  simpler time in the early aughts when The Strokes' Last Nite was on every rock radio  station and skinny jeans were cool.  D I S C O V E R Twitter: https://twitter.com/theprojectorss Website: https://www.theprojectorsband.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theprojectorsband YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@SakamanoRecords Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theprojectorss/ L I V E Wed. Vancouver's premiere power-poppers The Get Arounds have just released their new full-length album, I Wanna Live. Their songs meander from revved up numbers that seem to be pulled from The Dead Boys Young Loud and Snotty into hits with melodic choruses that call to mind power-pop classics like Nikki and the Corvettes. Their female-fronted angst fills the songs with 90's style punk-grit that are reminiscent of L7, Bikini Kill or Babes in Toyland. Guitarist Carman says  "I like short songs that stick in your brain. Don't bore us, get to the chorus type stuff. Lyrics usually come last. I listen to many types of music and I try to write a bit of everything, but most of it is trash. A few stick around and make it to an album!" The new single seems to draw on what Carman describes as the band's Influences - Ace Frehley, Sex Pistols, Steve Earle, and Blondie. When it comes down to writing the songs Carman says "It's mostly about the feel and the sounds. I find it a bit forced trying to make the song be a certain idea. It's better if I just let them evolve into whatever they are becoming and attach a meaning later when I can understand what the song is about. I never write the words on paper because then they never change for the better. Making the album I just tried to write as many songs as I could in the time we had. And we also used a couple old songs I had kicking around for years. They sound a lot better with Lana singing them!” D I S C O V E R Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegetarounds Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thegetaroundsband Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheGetAroundsAreNumber1/ Bandcamp: https://thegetaroundsarenumber1.bandcamp.com/album/i-wanna-live Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4DA6NbKPf7vRHzDppPdJlK?si=NzjGlP2sSza3qr49zTQZrA Stream I Wanna Live by The Get Arounds https://open.spotify.com/album/7qzVbcANM5JrtKFGa3c8iS?si=YNTYiq_yQVm9nSuKqoOjKQ Go to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop Go get the 1 hour mini Documentary on Lowest of the Low's Classic Album Shakespeare my Butt at https://thelowdoc.gumroad.com/l/SMB

What do you get when you combine two Canadian music legends into one guitar-heavy, power-pop unit that strives to sound like Minneapolis in the 90's? You get SLIP~ons! They come by their brand of rock honestly, with Brock Pytel of The Doughboys on guitar and Brian Minato of Sarah McLachlan on bass. Add to the mix Rob "Shockk" Matharu of The Spitfires on guitar, and Shane Wilson on drums and you've got a rock ‘n' roll quartet with a vibe not unlike The Lemonheads, Hüsker Dü, Ash, The Replacements or Dinosaur Jr. After a long run of obstacles, SLIP~ons have finally been able to announce their debut EP Heavy Machinery (mixed by Dave Ogalvie of Skinny Puppy fame) with a single and accompanying video for the title track of their new vinyl release. The black and white video (directed and edited by the R.D. Cane, shot by Ryan C. Clark) consists of layers of short montages of the band in rehearsal with heady, swirling edits that play with time and space. Viewers get a frenetic and intimate side stage view of the band rocking, with Shockk's sick guitar solo a climax in the middle of the video. The visual style of the video allows the deep rhythm of the track to shine through, and as director RD states, “It's cool to provide a comfortable playground to let the boys be as comfortable and real as possible.” The video highlights real-time recording of the band to capture the feel of their enigmatic live performances. Reflecting on the video shoot, Brock says, “I've always been a bit iffy on music videos, so we just borrowed some grip gear and lamps from my film buddies and created a bit of a playground in our rehearsal space for RD to do his thing. Jam Space Confidential was the theme. RD was really working up a sweat directing traffic, and I love that you can see the crew moving around with us moving ladders and waving light wands.” The track Heavy Machinery has Pytel's signature gravelly vocals and tongue-in-cheek lyrics that paint a picture of a night out wandering around Vancouver's East Side. The pounding guitars offer grungy, punchy licks with hints of The Pixies and build up to a crescendo that echoes the name of the track. Sparse but poignant gang vocals round out the sound and add an interesting depth to the song. Looking at the EP as a whole, Pytel mentions some early praise it has already garnered: “The mastering engineer, Ronan Chris Murphy, is a dear friend that I've known since the Doughboys played with his band Pumphouse at Rockitz in Richmond, Virginia in the late eighties. He got back to me after I sent him the audio files to work on and said, ‘This might be the best music I have ever heard from you. Good job doin' us old guys proud.'” add SLIP~ons to spotify: https://show.co/EbzcS5Qwatch the video on YouTube Go to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop

Mason Lowe (drummer of Seattle's feel-good, classic rock-inspired outfit Bread & Butter) has just announced his debut solo LP Morning People, due out June 23rd on Seattle's Killroom Records. The advance single Plastered features pounding, hyperactive guitar riffs over loping drums before opening up into a delightfully poppy chorus with descending melodies. Reflecting on the process behind the album and first single Lowe said, “When I started writing songs for this album, I was going through a long lonely period. But "Plastered” was one of the last few songs written for the album. And by then, I was in L-U-V love. I was a straight-up twinkle toes motherfucker! This song is about someone getting steamrolled by love, is heading off the rails, and is just letting it happen.” In a record with lots of different vibes, this is one of the heavier songs. Mason says, "I don't know where that riff came from! It's a mystery. I'm not a bombastic dude. I'm the kind of guy that tiptoes around my house when I'm alone.” The accompanying video for Plastered features Shane Herrel (Bread & Butter) and Maria-Elena Jaurez (Acapulco Lips) playing maniacally crafted homemade instruments throughout a psychedelic journey without ever leaving the Lowe's garage.  Morning People, combines the sounds of glam rock, 60's girl groups, and grunge. The result is an open-hearted, sunny record - a nostalgic sweet pop album that is hopeful, beautiful and utterly sentimental. Nods to Big Star, The Shangri-Las and The Beach Boys are present throughout. Morning People was recorded by Lowe during the height of the pandemic while he was struggling to keep the doors open at a Seattle human services nonprofit. But these are not 12 songs of loneliness and exhaustion. This is a dozen songs about new love, hot crushes, and friendship. Mason dragged his weary buns into the basement with 6-packs of Rainier tallboys to record heavy riffs, light harmonies, and tight arrangements. How tight? None of the songs on this album make it to the three-minute mark. Where did this burst of positive energy come from? "I have no idea,” Mason says. "Work was really tough. I had a lot on my mind. A lot. But I dived into music in a way I never have before. This was a super serious time, but the songs that came out are really poppy and fun. I don't know why.  I'm not a sunshiny person. Really!" Brown has recently launched Wolfe Island Records as a home for the prison music and the many artists he produces and collaborates with, including Fenner, Suzanne Jarvie, David Corley, One River, The Mermaids, Hadley McCall Thackston and the Stephen Stanley Band. We're used to craft distillers turning their hands to primary spirits, such as gin, whiskey tequila and even vodka, but one category that seems to have been mainly left alone is that of liqueurs. Apologue Liqueurs is not only taking a craft approach in terms of production but also trying to shake the drinks category up with the use of unusual flavours that possibly fill a gap we didn't even know was there. To find out more, we talked to Chicago bartender, Robert Haynes from Apologue about uncommon ingredients, educating consumers, and, of course, the drinks that can be made with their liquids.

After leaving school and working as a graphic designer, Evan turned his side hustle of selling antiques into a full-time reality and has now been dealing in decorative arts for 12 years. Apologue is a beautiful little shop filled with eclectic beauty! Evan's collection is a handsome mix of English, French, Asian and African decorative and applied arts. I was drawn to Apologue because it isn't your run of the mill antique store, Evan makes brave furnishing choices and utilizing a vast array of materials and mediums. We recorded this episode over two separate sessions due to a clashing calendar, so I sincerely hope you enjoy listening to this wide-ranging conversation as much we enjoyed recording it!

Job done by the way, both labels have a new (great) look. For our welcome back podcast we have a 3 decks techno mix by Patrick Bolton. Patrick is a bristol based producer and Dj and one of the founding members of Apologue recordings. Techno is forever evolving and so Patrick has tried to evolve with it, creating tracks which are based on the elements that have influenced him over the past decade and more, believing there is always room to develop further and push what can be done with electronic music Hi creations contain experimental elements, without compromising on dancefloor appeal, and the same can be said for his Dj sets. After trying various set ups, and toying with new technology for a while, he has settled on a happy medium, combining traktor scratch and 3 turntables, which is what was used for this mix.
