We've spent a lot of time in this series looking at how gospel motherhood brings freedom—so what do we do when our freedom feels in conflict with another mom's preferences? (Oof. Tricky, right?) In this episode, Emily and Laura discuss how we can honor moms who think differently than we do by asking questions while holding to our own convictions, being charitable, treating others the way we want to be treated, and prayerfully trusting the work of God in another mom's life. Loving one another well often requires patience and sacrifice, but by God's grace, we can learn to love other moms while standing unified around the most essential gospel truths. "I think at various times — before you have the kid, after you have the kid — it's useful to sit down and think about: What do I want the shape of this to look like? What time do I want to be spending? Which hours? How do I want the weekends to look? The things that are going to shape the way your day-to-day goes, and the time you spend with your kids, and what you're doing in that time with your kids, and all of those things: you have an opportunity to deliberately plan them. And you can then feel like, 'I've thought about this, and this is a life that I want. This is a life that we're trying to craft for our family, for our kids.' And that is distinct from thinking you're doing a good job in every moment — which you can't achieve. But you can achieve, 'I'm doing this the way that I think works for my family.'" — Emily OsterIn today's episode, host Luisa Rodriguez speaks to Emily Oster — economist at Brown University, host of the ParentData podcast, and the author of three hugely popular books that provide evidence-based insights into pregnancy and early childhood.Links to learn more, summary, and full transcript. They cover:Common pregnancy myths and advice that Emily disagrees with — and why you should probably get a doula.Whether it's fine to continue with antidepressants and coffee during pregnancy. What the data says — and doesn't say — about outcomes from parenting decisions around breastfeeding, sleep training, childcare, and more.Which factors really matter for kids to thrive — and why that means parents shouldn't sweat the small stuff. How to reduce parental guilt and anxiety with facts, and reject judgemental “Mommy Wars” attitudes when making decisions that are best for your family. The effects of having kids on career ambitions, pay, and productivity — and how the effects are different for men and women.Practical advice around managing the tradeoffs between career and family. What to consider when deciding whether and when to have kids.Relationship challenges after having kids, and the protective factors that help. And plenty more.Producer and editor: Keiran HarrisAudio Engineering Lead: Ben CordellTechnical editing: Simon Monsour and Milo McGuireAdditional content editing: Katy Moore and Luisa RodriguezTranscriptions: Katy Moore

What She Chats about in Today's Episode: ~Defining the term "mommy wars" and covering a bit of its history ~How the mommy wars show up in our current culture ~8 problems with the mommy wars - 8 main ways in which they are doing damage in the church: *They are causing us to major on the minors, only to forget what is really important. *They are causing us to forget what the Word of God actually has to say on the topic of mothering (see Proverbs 22:6, Ephesians 6:4, Titus 2:4-5, Deuteronomy 6:6-7) as we're so focused on things of lesser importance. *They are destroying the Titus 2 model and its outreach (see Titus 2:3-5). *They are causing us to ignore (and even blaspheme!) the gospel. *They are hindering us from being able to walk by the Spirit and to walk by faith (see James 1:5, Isaiah 30:21, Psalm 139, and Galatians 5:16-18,22-23). *They are causing division and leading to our losing out on encouraging friendship and valuable fellowship (see Genesis 2:18, Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, Romans 14). *They are leading to our losing our salt and light and to our becoming poor examples of Christ (Matthew 5:13-16, John 13:34-35, 1 Corinthians 5:20, Colossians 3:12, 4:6, Ephesians 4:29, Romans 12:18). *They are burdening us with unnecessary and unbiblical expectations. ~How the enemy is using the mommy wars to keep our noses on the internet and social media rather than in Scripture ~1 Timothy 4:8's response to the mommy wars ~How the mommy wars have led to a subconscious misunderstanding of the gospel as we look to our mothering choices to provide us with our righteousness, perfection, and good standing before God ~The issues of the mommy wars as being issues of secondary importance and why we have no right to judge other mamas in these areas ~Viewing mommy wars topics in light of Romans 14 ~Romans 14 and why I do not publicly share our family's choices regarding things like vaccination ~Assuming the best of other mamas, realizing that every mama comes to the decision they make with a desire for what is best for their children  ~The wisdom of the world vs. the wisdom of God ~The long list of expectations we as moms have on our shoulders as to what "good moms" do  vs. the very short list God has for us ~And more! And - 2 sages with comparable names. And a dispute between Beit Hillel and Beit Shammai that brings us back to pregnancy and nursing.

Despite our best efforts, there always seems to be an underlying case of “who did it better”?  One of the areas where we see this crop up frequently is within circles of working mothers. Is it better to work out of the house or to be a stay-at-home mom? What if you work in the home and still try to manage taking care of your children? Is that even a realistic possibility? What if you choose not to work at all? Mommy Wars. They may have started out as “working mom” v. “stay at home mom” but it has morphed (or devolved) into something much bigger. While, in the eyes of our culture, “you do you” might have freed us to make different choices than another mom, has it drawn us together and given us the support we need? Parenting is so difficult and Ecclesiastes reminds us that toiling away alone is tantamount to trying to catch smoke. What we need instead are co-laborers. We need other moms to come alongside us, not because we agree on everything, but because we have a common goal - the flourishing of the next generation.  We need to come alongside other moms because when we pit ourselves against one another due to differences in parenting styles, we cut off our nose to spite our collective face. Career Sequel - The Return to Work Podcast with Lee Koles Ph.D.

One of the biggest challenges a woman faces when she becomes a mom is deciding what to do about her professional aspirations and her need for childcare. This episode examines the “Mommy Wars” narrative that claims mothers who choose to return to work and mothers who decide to stay home are “divided into hostile, defensive camps”. Is this true? What are the costs and benefits of returning to work full-time or leaving the paid workforce? Do mothers have to choose? I examine these questions and also reveal Covid's impact on the workplace, job searches and the “Mommy Wars” myth.

Lawn mower, helicopter, free range parenting, snow plow and light house parenting are all new sub categories of parenting styles that are commonly spoken about these days. How well do a helicopter parent and a free range parent get along? Can someone who allows their kids never ending freedoms befriend someone who won't let their children out of their sight? Back in Ep. 13, Stop Shoulding, we discussed why “should” is a word rooted in expectation, obligation, and criticism. Since then, we’ve mostly eliminated it from our vocabulary, which has felt liberating and has significantly boosted our happiness. Even so, there are still plenty of silent shoulds lurking in our thoughts. Though we may not even be aware of them, they are nonetheless driving our feelings and actions. We surface our most common silent shoulds about career, family (including The Mommy Wars), and life in general and reframe them in a more intentional way. Ultimately, we believe there is no “should” -- WE get to decide what we want and choose to do, and so do you! „Was?! „Bad Mom“ oder „Good Mom“? Das ist heute die Frage bei den Kunze-Ladies - mit Janine auf dem heißen Stuhl… OMG!! Hat sie etwa nur ein Salatblatt aufs Brot getan?!!

This is a topic Rebekah has written about extensively and shared about on other podcasts, as well, so she's excited to now be branching out into discussing it on her own podcast! We’ve all done it. We’ve passed judgment on some mom for something she’s done (or not done).    For being on her phone while she’s at the park with her kids.   For going back to work “so soon” after giving birth.    For extended breastfeeding - or not. For sleep training - or not. For making handmade organic baby food - or not.    And have you ever worried about what other people will think about your own decisions, for your own family? I’m guessing yes.    The reality is that all this judgment isn’t helping any of us. But also, we can learn a great deal about ourselves if we are willing to get brave and look at why we pass judgement on others, and when.    In fact, this might be the thing that allows you to break free of your fear of being judge by others and making stronger, clearer decisions that you absolutely know are right for you.  In this episode: What are the Mommy Wars and why they are so bad for all of us What's underneath your judgment of other women How to shift your thinking and bring more compassion and empathy to yourself and others An exciting announcement about the next episode Complete show notes for Episode 41 Connect with Doña on Instagram Get the Get Back In Control Of Your Life workbook and get regular updates about the podcast Find out how to work one on one with Doña

Last month the moms talked about Helicopter Parenting and Mom Tribes. This month they feel brave enough to tackle some of the “Mommy Wars”! Stay at home versus working outside of the home. Nursing versus bottle feeding. Childbirth choices. Sleeping arrangements. Discipline methods, etc. There are always lots of opinions because moms are all so different. At the end of the day, it seems best if we all respect other mom’s ways of being a mom. Often one of the best parts of being a mom is enjoying time with the kids and finding cool things to do with them! On today’s episode, the moms talk about their favorite activities to do with their kids and family. If you have a great suggestions that the moms didn’t mention look for a post on the Naperville, Illinois Moms Facebook Group to continue the conversation and share your family favorites!

We hear it all over the place, the well coined phrase "Mommy Wars". It refers to the battle moms these days find themselves in with one another. Why? Why does such a thing even exist? People saying unkind things has existed since the dawn of humankind but in todays world where people can hide behind a screen and anonymity, the scale on which people are willing to tell others why they are wrong or that they don't know what they are talking about is at an all time high. Today I talk about how we can put an end to the "Mommy Wars" and the role I feel we each play in it. I can promise you the answers I give are not what you may think they should be, but I hope you come away realizing that they really do have the ability to bring peace and support back to the journey we moms are all on. Enjoy!

The Mommy Wars are one of the worst things to come from the age of social media. Oh, sure! They've been around a long time (moms have always been critical of one another, because sin!) but social media allows these wars to reach a whole new level of awful. The saddest part is, the mommy wars are not contained in the walls of social media. They are seeping into the fabric of our church and disrupting fellowship among believers. This has to end! Hear our take on the Mommy Wars with this weeks episode. Ps. Take a look at the book "Mom Enough". There is a free download on the desiring God website. Recently, I have been asked repeatedly to do an episode on mommy judgment, specifically on moms who judge other moms. Let’s just call this what it is - Mommy Wars.  And please know – it’s an ugly place for you. And it’s damaging to your kids.     I’ll be honest, before I was a mom I sat in judgment of my mom friends.  I noticed and quite comfortably critiqued: How Johnny should could benefit from more time outs The atrocity of little Susie’s frequent hitting The obvious problem that was Bobbie’s french fry addiction   Then, I had a kid.   My kid’s behavior is not impacted at all by time outs.  So we don’t really use them much.   Last week, my kid smacked me upside the head with a metal toy car and gave me a goose egg.  The next day he kicked me in the mouth.   On any given Sunday, when we’re out for brunch, you can find my kid eating a well balanced meal of bacon and French fries.    So, who am I to judge…..   I can no longer comfortably critique.     I am IN. IT.    One of the quotes that is always, always close to my heart is, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.”   When a horrific accident happens involving a child, let’s not judge.  We do not know the story.  We do not know the circumstances.  And there is no reason to think you are a better mother than any other mother.    I firmly believe we are all doing the very best we can.     It is easy to get caught up in community gossip or media mayhem over news stories involving kids.  It’s very easy and very comfortable, sadly, to stand on a holier-than-thou pedestal pointing out the short-comings of another mother.    And all this does is continue to build walls between moms and walls between women.  At it’s best, it’s fun gossip between moms.  At it’s worst, it’s women discrediting and devaluing other women in front of their kids.    Let’s do our kids a favor and acknowledge that being a mommy is hard and we all do our best everyday.  Sometimes things don’t happen the way we want.  Sometimes horrible things happen.  In those moments, we have an opportunity to be kind and supportive and gentle.  We have the chance to listen and learn and practice empathy.     I’m gonna screw up a lot as a mom.  A lot.     So are you.   It’s ok.    I’m here for you.  And I hope you’ll be there for me.     This is what I want my kid to see.

Stay-at-home and working-moms: Embrace the season you're in with Paula FarisAs moms, we all work. We know that. However, our culture wants us to find a camp and defend it. We find ourselves in a “stay-at-home” world or a “working moms” world. Paula Faris is a dear friend of mine and is just who we needed on this podcast topic. Like many of us, Paula has worked in many lanes since becoming a mom. She has worked full-time on Good Morning America and The View. She has also had a season at home with her kids and is now working from home on her new brand, Carry Media.Paula and I chat about how often we (moms) judge each other's decisions and what we really need is support and understanding. What if we could end these mommy wars and all get on the same train of support? In this episode, we also talk about how employers could help shift the work environment for mothers in the future. Paula speaks from the true heart of an advocate that is using her voice and platform to fight for the working moms.My favorite part is when Paula encourages moms to embrace each season.
