“There was a sense of discovery about what this series was going to be about. It was going to be about young people -- with all of their shenanigans, and the maneuvering, and all the silliness that takes place with that. But it was also going to be about growing up. These five people, and the fabric that holds them together.” -- Asaad Kelada - producer/director, The Facts of LifeSusan and Sharon welcome legendary Director Asaad Kelada. In a career spanning four decades, Asaad Kelada has directed over 340 episodes of television, including Rhoda, Phyllis, The Tony Randall Show, Benson, WKRP in Cincinnati, One Day at a Time, Night Court, Valerie, Who's the Boss and The Office -- as well as four seasons of The Facts of Life. Welcome to the The First Ones, an Our POoRCHoices podcast. On this series Sarcastro picks a show from yesteryear and then rallies some (or all) of the fellas to join him in recapping just the first episode of said show while dissecting it and determining if it's a show that would fly in today's entertainment landscape. This month on The First Ones, Sarcastro is joined by Fatty and Banky to talk about The Facts of Life which Sarcastro noted he had some help selecting which series to cover for this episode from friend of the show and co-host of The Sunnydale Diaries: A Buffy Podcast, Melanie. With a premier in the fall of 1979 none of them realized how large of a cast the first episode had and that future star Molly Ringwald was in the first season and Nancy McKeon's rough and tough, street-wise Jo Polniaczek wasn't. Which makes them wonder, had they ever seen the first season let alone the first episode at all? Intro and outro interpreted and performed Sarcastro.

Hollywood writer/producer Bernie Orenstien (That Girl!, Sanford & Son) reads it and calls her with these magical words: “I think you could have a career out here.” Two weeks later she's on a plane to Hollywood!INSTANT CHEMISTRY: Actress Linda Marsh teams with Margie and a writing partnership begins…SPEAK YOUR TRUTH: Their first meeting at Facts of Life: “Why are the girls wearing hot pants and cut-off tops -- in New England? Episode 315: “Everything I Ever Learned About TV Writing, I Learned From ‘The Facts Of Life' | Anupam Nigam”The Facts of Learning about Television Writing from The Facts of LifeThe Golden Girls of Eastland: TV Writer Anupam Nigam Shares His Lessons from The Facts Of LifeThe Golden Girls of Eastland: Top Lessons TV Writer Anupam Nigam Learned from The Facts Of Life For some people, a childhood spent lounging in front of the television leads to nothing but being sent to bed when Law and Order license plate comes on. But for Anupam Nigam, it led to a lifelong love of television – – and a successful career in TV writing and producing. And his favorite show of all? The Facts of Life! The Facts of Life was a spin-off of Diff'rent Strokes and aired on NBC from 1979-1988. The show starred Charlotte Rae as Eastland School for Girls housemother Edna Garrett watching over an evolving cast of young female stars including Kim Fields, Mindy Cohn, Nancy McKeon and a very young Molly Ringwald! It ran for more than 200 episodes, and spawned three TV movies. Anupam Nigam has written and produced episodes of hit TV shows like Psych, Defiance, Cruel Summer, Mech-X4 and Station 19. He is currently writer and co-executive producer of the hit CBS drama Fire Country. Susan and Sharon talk with Anupam about his childhood as an Indian American kid in New Jersey, his early love of television, the insight of The Facts of Life -- and the facts he learned that have stayed with him to this day. THE CONVERSATIONGROWING UP INDIAN -- IN NEW JERSEY: For Anupam, who was raised in an immigrant Indian household, television was a window into the wider world of “American” families - and how they were alike, and different from, his.“I'M NOT A DOCTOR, BUT I WRITE FOR THEM ON TV” -- Anupam was pre-med, a lab researcher, and even a certified EMT -- briefly -- before realizing that TV blood was more his style.Anupam's first script was a spec episode of Star Trek: Voyager -- and after that he was hooked.Anupam's “scientist mind” cracked the code on how to write a Law & Order script, and it led to a coveted spot in the Warner Bros Writers Program -- and then a big move to Hollywood! His first job was on The Division -- starring Facts of Life's Nancy McKeon!YOU TAKE THE GOOD, YOU TAKE THE VERY, VERY BAD: Anupam actually learned about the facts of life from the many “very special” episodes The Facts of Life: Abortion, divorce, drug abuse and death, anyone?Natalie was a natural STAR - When Charlotte Rae toured Westlake School for research, her young tour guide was… Mindy Cohn. Charlotte insisted the producers meet her and the role of Natalie was created for her! Those roller-skates? Tootie had to wear them to make her taller!CHEAPER BY THE… TEN? The original first season cast had TEN main characters - The seven girls, Mrs. Garett (Charlotte Rae), teacher Emily Mahoney (Jenny O'Hara) and Headmaster Stephen Bradley (played by John Lawlor). The OG Eastlake students: Blair Warner (Lisa Whelchel), Nancy Olsen (Felice Schachter), Sue Anne Weaver (Julie Piekarski), Tootie Ramsey (Kim Fields), Molly Parker (Molly Ringwald), Cindy Webster (Julie Anne Haddock) and Natalie Green (Mindy Cohn).…AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR. After season one, the young cast was cut from seven girls down to the “Core Four”: Lisa Whelchel as Blair, Kim Fields as Tootie, Mindy Cohn as Natalie and bringing on newcomer Nancy McKeon as Jo Polniaczek. So, join Susan and Sharon -- and Anupam! -- as they talk Shondaland, The Golden Girls, shoulder pads, tea-time, Jermaine Jackson, Mech x4, Geri Jewel, Entertainment Weekly -- and “Who Shot J.R?”! Comedian Jen Kober always knew why she felt an affinity with Mindy Cohn's Natalie on The Facts of Life. Natalie was the rare bigger girl on TV in the 1980s, and yet that wasn't a huge part of her character -- she was smart, goofy, and beloved by her friends. As for Jodie Foster's tomboy teen in the original Freaky Friday movie? Sure, it was good to see a rough-housing girl at odds with her mom for not being girly enough. But there was just something else about young Jodie Foster that made sense... Presented with our apologies to any emotionally intelligent men out there ;) The Jordan has one quick thing about the new trailer for Y2KJen's special is called 'No Flies on Me,' From 800 Pound Gorilla Media. You can find out where she's performing next at her website. ***With Jordan Crucchiola and Jen Kober

In this episode, Kristen and Carrie talk about all things 1984 including the winning Impossible Pie recipe. Carrie struggles a bit with telling the difference between Kristy McNichol and Nancy McKeon, and the ever so similar Matt Dillon and Matt Damon. However, she is redeemed by her knowledge of all things Punky Brewster. You can find the recipe, pictures, and other fun things we discuss in this episode on our website: momswoodenspoon.com

This episode we're traveling back to 1992 and checking the screening times for Where the Day Takes You. This film is Will Smith's feature film debut, which also features some other pretty noticeable up and coming actors at the time. Directed by Marc Rocco, this film depicting youth homelessness starring Dermot Mulroney, Laura Flynn Boyle, Sean Astin, and Balthazar Getty is a pretty well meaning film. Other notable appearances from Ricki Lake, Kyle MacLachlan, Nancy McKeon, David Arquette and Alyssa Milano. Will this be a movie rental fav or a movie theater regret? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loyaloats/message

Not to gunk up your feed with too much from us this week, but some of you have been having problems getting the track to play on Apple Podcasts. If you are, delete that first version of the episode and listen to this one. If you didn't have a problem, just delete this one. Sorry for the confusion! “The New Girl, Part One” and “The New Girl, Part Two” (November 19 and 26, 1980) True, the first episode of The Facts of Life is the one that comes closest to addressing LGBT issues, but so much of Jo and Blair's relationship treads close that we are returning to discuss Nancy McKeon's two-part introduction to the show. Librarian and Facts of Life scholar Erin Fletcher joins us to discuss the many layers to Jo and many lines that, upon second thought, seem like they might be double entendres. It's finally here the Director's Cut of one of our favorite episodes. The 1983 NBC TV Movie "High School U.S.A." featuring Michael J. Fox, Nancy McKeon, Anthony Edwards, Crystal Bernard and Todd Bridges leading an all-star cast ...... and Tom Villard. We've got fifteen minutes of new material for this Director's Cut. Just hope Otto's Robot doesn't steal any of your change to use in the soda machine while you listen.
Pilot Month concludes this week on It Was a Thing on TV as Mike, Chico and Greg also take a look at a beached whale in Oregon. First, you heard about the TV movie in the previous episode. The powers that be at NBC felt it was so successful that a pilot was made a year later. It had its moments but alas, no Michael J. Fox, no Todd Bridges, and no Nancy McKeon only got High School U.S.A. to pilot stage, one which aired. Next, The Coneheads was a staple of the early days of SNL and it was later a cinematic release, but there was an animated pilot in 1983 which was a one and done. Get your sensor rings at the ready as we look at the wacky adventures of Beldar, Prymaat, and Connie Conehead. Finally, in November of 1970, a story aired on KATU news in Oregon about a beached whale being exploded with dynamite to dispose of it. It ended up being one of the most unusual and memorable local news reports of all-time. Twenty-nine years ago, in fall of 1989, NBC aired a TV movie that was so impactful that people who saw it then still remark on the effect it had on them. It was Tracey Thurman’s story, called “A Cry for Help, starring Nancy McKeon as Tracey and Dale Midkiff as Buck. My podcast episodes aren't usually very newsworthy or timely but this week is an exception. Just days after I recorded my interview with Mindy Cohn, news broke about the very thing we discussed-a Facts of Life reboot or reunion. It wasn't the main reason why I wanted to interview her but it came up in our conversation and what she told me was surprising. Apparently Leonardo DiCaprio and Jessica Biel's production companies have bought the rights to The Facts of Life. Mindy tells us exactly what happened when she and a prominent producer had the idea to reboot the show and took it to Sony. Days later, the rights to TFOL were no longer available and had been snatched up by Leo and Jessica. She explains it fully in this episode so it's definitely worth a listen to hear for yourself. People say I look a lot like Mindy. What do you think? Mindy and I met at the BGG Acting Studio several years ago and I was immediately drawn to her. Not just because people have compared me to her, several times, but because she's a natural mentor. She tells me that's because she was mentored by legends in the business and feels compelled to return the kindness. CREDIT: NBC-TV/KOBAL/REX/SHUTTERSTOCK One of her mentors was Charlotte Rae, who not only pushed for Mindy to get the part of Natalie on The Facts of Life, but took her under her wing as she came of age in Hollywood. Charlotte Rae passed away on Sunday, August 5th. We recorded this episode several days before which is why Mindy still talks as if she's alive. It's clear Charlotte Rae's legacy will live on through actors like Mindy, and so on and so on. THE FACTS OF LIFE -- Pictured: (l-r) Nancy McKeon as Joanne 'Jo' Polniaczek, Kim Fields as Dorothy 'Tootie' Ramsey, Lisa Whelchel as Blair Warner, Mindy Cohn as Natalie Green, Charlotte Rae as Edna Garrett -- Photo by: NBC/NBCU Photo Bank In addition, we also talked about why she still takes acting classes, her secret to longevity in this fickle industry, and where her heart is now. It's in a charity called Heifer International, an organization that works to end poverty around the world by empowering women and teaching sustainable farming. They have a big fundraiser coming up in October on the backlot of Universal Studios. To find out more information about the event and how you can help, visit www.heifer.org/LA. When I talk to Mindy I'm reminded of why I love this business. There are actors out there who aren't just trying to be famous. They have a love for the craft, and are a part of something that sometimes feels unattainable to me. I often feel like an outsider looking into the cool kids of Hollywood, just hoping someone will invite me in to the party. So until that happens, I'm going to keep gleaning all the wisdom I can from those willing to share, and then make my own party. To hear the rest of my interview with Mindy Cohn, download and subscribe to MIH podcast on iTunes. Don't forget to leave a review. And make sure you follow Mindy on Twitter @MindyCohn and Instagram @MindyCohn.
We are finally back with our summer episode, and it only took half of the summer to record it, edit it and get it online. To be fair, we had a lot of technical issues with this, so please be patient with the sound. But Dan and I did have a blast discussing High School USA (1983) and Poison Ivy (1985). Lots of love given to Michael J. Fox, Nancy McKeon, Crispin Glover, Tony Dow, and some guy named Dirty Curt. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording it! For the next episode we are taking a road trip to Crowhaven Farm (1970), and then stopping by Bay Cove (1987), where we'll take on all things occult! Remember you can always let us know what you think about those films, or any telefilm you want to talk about by contacting us. See you soon!

Janet Kelly and Nancy McKeon met while working for The Washington Post. Janet was a “no-nonsense” staff writer sharing her views on style and fashion, while Nancy was Editor of the Food, Real Estate, Travel, and Sunday Business sections. (But not all at once.) After leaving The Post, Janet recognized that media outlets and websites were catering to millenials. And the 40+ audience, a growing demographic with significant buying power, was being ignored. Janet decided to make a difference by creating and delivering stories with points of view for a more mature audience. Janet recruited Nancy, they brought other media-savvy women on-board, and MyLittleBird.com was born! In our discussion, they share what it's like to run your own business vs. working for a corporation, how they are growing the website, and why this venture is so energizing. We also chat about some of their favorite stories - how to find jeans that fit, the dog park and dog culture, and managing anxiety attacks. Listen to our conversation to hear Nancy and Janet discuss: Janet and Nancy's backgrounds in print and online media and how their paths intersected to create a new online venture Why they created "a grown-up girl's guide to D.C. living" How to stay energized as your career progresses Why it pays to be strategic in business and in your personal life Adapting and using your skills for new ventures The importance of "getting out!" Constantly expanding your knowledge to remain in the game Quotes from Nancy and Janet: "We try to mix the valuable and the humorous to create a package that's inviting for us to write about and that's inviting for our readers to read about." - Nancy "As Nancy always says, 'Look we've been doing this for so long, why shouldn't we keep doing it?
