MORENOby Pravin WilkinsNovember 1-24American Premiere! When Kaepernick kneels, will he?
2016. The NFL has been shaken by Colin Kaepernick's controversial decision to take a knee during the national anthem to protest against police brutality. Superstar running back Luis Moreno, who is all about his game – and his paycheck -- has joined a new team with championship aspirations. But America's leadership is changing, and when a painful new reality hits close to home, Luis is forced to ask whether politics have a place on the field, and if he is willing to risk his career to take a stand for his own community. Down near the bottom of the crossed-out list of things you have to do today, between “green thread” and “broccoli” you find that you have penciled “sunlight.” Resting on the page, the word is as beautiful, it touches you as if you had a friend and sunlight were a present he had sent you from some place distant as this morning—to cheer you up, and to remind you that, among your duties, pleasure is a thing, that also needs accomplishing Do you remember? that time and light are kinds of love, and love is no less practical than a coffee grinder or a safe spare tire? Tomorrow you may be utterly without a clue but today you get a telegram, from the heart in exile proclaiming that the kingdom still exists, the king and queen alive, still speaking to their children, —to any one among them who can find the time, to sit out in the sun and listen. by Tony Hoagland Segundo, les comento acerca del sesgo de la negatividad.

In a far-reaching conversation, Eric and Paul discuss what natural and social sciences can learn from each other, why psychology should identify with both, what Paul's relationship with Solomon Asch was like, why people's tendency to focus on the negative is especially dangerous in the moral domain, and what it is like studying ethnic conflicts. When the resident theatre at a Jewish Community Center commissions a new play about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a half-Jewish/half-Jordanian playwright, the Center finds itself pulled in several directions. The playwright was sent on a trip to Israel and came back with a story that only explored one side of the Westbank conflict. The playwright's narrative, told to them by a Palestinian family. Questioning the premise of the story and the balance of it becomes a point of conflict within the organization. One of the Center’s major donors, the Center’s Board President, the theatre’s Artistic Director, and the playwright each fight for a different outcome, while the Center’s Executive Director tries to keep the institution from falling off its foundation. SETTLEMENTS examines conflicts inside the Jewish community, the radicalization of young people's thoughts on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and how existing Jewish institutions are coping with these new realities. WEIRD: Adventures of an acronym

Many Minds

Welcome to our 10th episode! Today’s show is another in our ‘mini minds’ series. We’ve been experimenting with different formats for our minis, as you may have noticed, but today we’ve got another in the classic blogpost style. The topic is the acronym WEIRD—maybe you’ve heard it used. It stands for Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic. It’s become a shorthand for the idea that people in WEIRD societies are a bit unusual relative to the rest our species. The term was first introduced 10 years ago. On this episode I talk about its origins and the far-reaching influence it’s had since. As with all episodes, be sure to check out the show notes for a smorgasbord of links and tidbits. There was a lot I had to leave on the cutting room floor with this one. But I swept some of it up and put it in the notes for anyone who’s interested. Enjoy!   A text version of this "mini" is readable here.    Notes and links 2:00 – The birthplace of the acronym: ‘The weirdest people in the world?’ 2:44 – A 2008 paper by Jeffrey Arnett that provided key support for the first part of Henrich et al.’s two-part argument. 3:35 – The visual illusion in question is the Müller-Lyer Illusion. 3:52 – These cultural differences in spatial conceptualization were first widely reported by Stephen Levinson and colleagues. See his book for the full story (or see a popular article of mine for a much shorter version). 4:33 – See the commentary by Meadon and Spurrett titled ‘It’s not just the subjects – there are too many WEIRD researchers.’ 4:45 – See the commentary by Rozin titled ‘The weirdest people in the world are a harbinger of the future of the world.’ For an expansion of Rozin’s argument, with more examples, see my article on “global WEIRDing”. 5:45 – See David F. Lancy, The Anthropology of Childhood. (Note that only the second edition came out after the WEIRD article was published.) One part of child development that proves unexpectedly variable across cultures is learning to walk and other motor milestones. 6:30 – The intersection of smell and WEIRD-ness is discussed in a recent special issue—see the editorial introduction here. Long-standing ideas about the impoverished nature of human olfaction are discussed here. 6:48 – A study comparing olfactory sensitivity in Tsimane people and Germans. 6:55 – For discussion of the idea that odors are ineffable, see this article. The same article was also among the first to characterize the elaborated and consistently applied odor lexicon of a hunter-gatherer group. Other papers have since built on this work. 7:23 – See the paper titled ‘WEIRD bodies: Mismatch, medicine, and missing diversity.’ Foot flatness and flexibility in “conventionally shod” populations are discussed in this paper. 8:10 – The researchers behind the original WEIRD paper—and their students—have kept busy themselves, exploring and expanding many related themes. See papers on theodiversity, the possible influence of the Catholic Church on WEIRD psychology, and the use of a new tool for mapping degrees of cultural distance. 8:22 – For a variety of articles raising issues of sample diversity, see: the 2014 opinion piece on the exclusion of left-handers from studies in cognitive neuroscience; another piece on diversity issues in cognitive neuroscience, focusing on issues of racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic homogeneity; an article on “anglocentrism” in linguistics; and a commentary on “missing diversity” in genetics. 9:11 – For the idea that our understanding of primates may be skewed by a focus on captive primates, see ‘The Mismeasure of Ape Social Cognition.’ For the STRANGE framework, see here. 10:00 – For recent critiques, see here and here. The quote about the “homogeneous West” comes from the Broesch et al. (2020) paper; the quote about treating humans as “endangered butterflies” comes from Barrett (2020). Conducting research on sensitive populations is a major theme of Broesch et al. (2020). 11:15 – The analysis of persistent sampling problems in developmental psychology is here. The analysis of the journal Psychological Science is here. Patricia Bauer’s editorial is here.   Many Minds is a project of the Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute (DISI) (https://www.diverseintelligencessummer.com/), which is made possible by a generous grant from the Templeton World Charity Foundation to UCLA. One of the things she looks at is something called a "negativity bias" where negative events loom larger than positive events when we're forming a summary impression. How to create an open sustainable living community, rooted in compassion and regeneration of the land. "To come to a place where people are willingly here to serve you, to give you a safe and transformative experience, that by itself is healing." ~ Aviram RozinIn this episode Amisha sits down with Aviram Rozin, founder of Sadhana Forest - a reforestation project and sustainable living community, which was established in 2003 on 70 acres of degraded land just outside Auroville. The project is designed around the primary principle of compassion - from the vegan organic food to the hand chiseled granite building stone, everything is carefully and consciously chosen under the criteria of compassion for all life and for the planet. Unschooling and Gift Economy are some of the compassionate ideologies that underpin the social aspects of the project, and the community nurture a culture of non violent communication and service. What began as a way for a family of three to live in alignment with their chosen principles, has blossomed quickly into a vibrant transformational community with two further projects being established in Haiti and Kenya. Aviram shares stories of daily life at Sadhana Forest and how the project brings people into greater contact with what nourishes and supports them, both within and without - carrying buckets of water  for their daily use, charging their phones and laptops with the midday sun and discovering lifelong talents and passions. He goes on to explain some of the rituals and practises that create the foundations for a thriving sustainable living community and underpin the transformational effect reported by visitors and volunteers at Sadhana Forest. Finally, he shares a little about his newest project, the University of Compassion, which launched in February of this year and aims to bring compassion to the forefront of human thinking."I treat love as a resource that is never depleted. So sharing my love with people, animals, plants, water, this is the recharge- it is like a two way stream all the time. I don't feel like there is energy flowing out of me that will finish - it is all the time flowing in and flowing out." ~ Aviram Rozin For links from this episode and more information - visit.www.thefutureisbeautiful.co

On this podcast, we catch up with InterAct Theatre Company artistic director Seth Rozin to talk about his first year at the Drake. While his company has only been performing there for the past a year, the conversations about moving there began in 2013. On the edge of completing a $2.97 million campaign, InterAct aims to create an inclusive space where all are welcome, including resident partners PlayPenn, Simpatico Theatre Project, Azuka Theatre, and Inis Nua Theatre.Expanding visionRozin founded InterAct in 1988, and this year marks his 27th season at its helm. The company, always committed to exploring social, political and cultural issues as well as championing new work, left its Adrienne Theater residency last year to build on its vision in a new setting. Rozin hopes the Drake will become a social and artistic hub for the region's burgeoning “new play” community. The space includes a 120-seat proscenium theatre, a 75-seat black box, and two lobbies. Here, he discusses the reasons behind his company's move, his plans for the future, and much more.
