Boeing 737s and Airbus A350s aren't the only things taking flight at O'Hare Airport.A quiet patch of green space at O'Hare has been home to a collection of beehives for almost 15 years. In 2011, O'Hare became the first airport in the United States to have an apiary. Since then, the hives have produced thousands of pounds of honey. CLICK HEREWho we areBlock Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.
Send us a textBehind the concrete walls and steel bars of America's prisons, something remarkable is happening. Education—once considered an afterthought in correctional settings—is proving to be one of the most powerful tools for transformation, not just for individuals but for entire institutions. Our conversation with Joshua Gilliam, who brings a unique dual perspective as both a former correctional officer and current university instructor, reveals the profound impact of educational opportunities for incarcerated individuals. Drawing on over a decade of experience and his ongoing doctoral research, Joshua shares compelling evidence that participation in higher education programs significantly reduces behavioral incidents within facilities while opening pathways to meaningful employment after release. The journey of prison education reflects America's evolving approach to rehabilitation. From the early "nothing works" doctrine that treated prisons merely as holding centers to today's growing recognition that education can break cycles of recidivism, we're witnessing a paradigm shift in how we think about corrections. The restoration of Second Chance Pell grants in 2023—after being eliminated by the 1994 Crime Bill—represents a crucial policy change making college accessible behind bars again. What makes this conversation particularly timely is the potential for mutual benefit. As colleges face enrollment challenges from demographic shifts and pandemic disruptions, correctional education programs offer a way to fill seats while fulfilling their educational mission. For correctional facilities, education creates safer environments for both incarcerated people and staff while addressing the staggering human and financial costs of America's world-leading incarceration rates.Perhaps most moving is the human element—older students mentoring younger ones, individuals overcoming literacy challenges to read their first book, or former substance users preparing for careers helping others overcome addiction. These stories remind us that education doesn't just transform individual lives; it ripples outward to strengthen families and communities.Consider this: nearly everyone incarcerated today will eventually return to our neighborhoods. The question isn't whether they'll come home, but who they'll be when they do. Great News! The Brighter Side of Education is now CPD Accredited! Have you ever used a GPS and gotten lost while driving? It's frustrating because what's supposed to be a helpful device isn't helpful at all. In today's message, Pastor Bill says God's always on the move and will lead you even if you're doing wrong. Unlike a GPS, which only works when you give it a destination, God continually works even when you don't know where you're going. Trust in Him today and allow Him to lead you. He's willing to guide as long as you let Him take the reins on your life.

David also shares anecdotes about his interactions with celebrities and the unexpected moments that shaped his experience. Harry Levant walked out of a casino after making what would be his final wager on April 27, 2014, returned to his hotel room and attempted to write a suicide note to leave for his family. He decided against taking his own life and has spent the past four years dedicated to working with people struggling with gambling addiction, as he did. Now a Doctor of Law and Policy, and the Director of Gambling Policy at Northeastern University. Levant has been a loud voice on what he believes the regulated gaming industry is getting wrong when it comes to prevention of harm from sports wagering and online casino games. The good doctor, who was recently quoted in a Washington Post article on abuse of athletes on social media, and on CBS 60 Minutes about the impact of technology on problem gambling, was our guest on the latest episode of the Gaming News Canada Show. He shared his story from that April night 11 years ago, the judge who gave him a second chance and his path to becoming a counselor, therapist and now leading the charge in developing a public health response to what he calls “the crisis created by the unprecedented expansion of the gambling industry”. We asked Levant for his thoughts on the impact of in-play betting, easy access to online gaming, what he'd like to see happen with advertising around sports events, and his response to the bill introduced by Sen. Marty Deacon in the Canadian Senate to create a national framework on sports betting advertising. Levant also spoke about the efforts by operators, regulators and other companies/organizations in the regulated gaming industry to reduce gambling harm. Hosted on Acast. So now, let’s get started with the final part of our Second Chances message and the series end. The profound truth found in Jonah 3:1—"the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time"—serves as the foundation for a transformative message about God's relentless grace. When Jonah ran from God's call, was thrown overboard, and spent three days in a fish's belly, most would assume his opportunity was lost forever. Yet God's word returned, demonstrating a powerful reality: our God doesn't just call us; He calls us back. This message explores the beautiful paradox of divine second chances through biblical examples from Genesis to Revelation. Adam and Eve, Moses, David, Rahab, Zacchaeus, Peter, Thomas—all ordinary people who failed spectacularly yet experienced God's extraordinary restoration. Their stories mirror our own journeys of failure and redemption, reminding us that God's grace continues long after our initial salvation. The Ninevites' response reveals another crucial spiritual distinction—they didn't merely believe in God's existence; they believed God Himself. Their king stepped down from his throne, modeling the surrender required when we remove ourselves from the control center of our lives. True repentance isn't simply feeling remorse; it's a deliberate two-step process of turning from sin and turning toward God. When they repented, God immediately relented, showing compassion without demanding proof or perfection. What is God trying to show you again? Perhaps it's a sin He's saving you from or an opportunity He's calling you to. Whatever it is, remember that His word comes back repeatedly. His grace isn't conditional on your performance but flows from His unchanging character. No matter how far you've run or how badly you've failed, God's love never runs out.Ready to experience the freedom of second chances? Remember: don't doubt in the dark what God spoke to you in the light. His grace is greater than your greatest sin, and He actively longs to show you compassion. The question isn't whether God will give you another chance—it's whether you'll embrace it when His word comes to you again.Support the showMade a decision to follow Jesus? We want to know about it! Our hosts return to the podcave doubled in enthusiasm to break down the episode, Second Chance.Alex and Will dive deep into the long-overdue return of a Two-Face-centric story, explaining why the character remains their second fav villain — get it?They unpack the episode's noir-laced animation, its unmistakable Hitchcockian vibes, and the strange surgery procedure that raises more questions than answers. Plus, raunchy tales of Bruce and Harvey's mysterious nightlife, the moment Robin almost went out Goodfellas style, and how a skylight just became Batman's new enemy.Oh — and did anyone else think that the surgeon was Leslie Thompkins?
