My friend Susie White (married mother of 4, early 50's) shares her journey with PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) and PME (Premenstrual Exacerbation) which is very different that Premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Susie, by bravely sharing her story, helps us understand what this is; how it impacts mental health and can lead to suicidal ideation; how it is not a spiritual weakness; how it is diagnosed; and how to get help. Please check out www.IAPMD.org for more information. Susie mentions Christina Bohn Rudd who died from suicide with PMDD (the obituary of this remarkable women can be read at: https://www.columbiatribune.com/obituaries/pclm0093521) and the work for her mother Marybeth to bring more understanding. Her obituary includes this section: Christina suffered from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), which can become more serious the longer it is undiagnosed and untreated. We feel compelled to share the importance of seeking help for premenstrual disorders. Many women and AFAB individuals are misdiagnosed and struggle to get appropriate help for many years. For information on PMDD, and if you would like to donate in lieu of flowers, please visit IAPMD.org. Susie, a committed Latter-day Saint, also talks about how we can improve our culture to better support women and their families. Susie's husband Tim also joins us to give insights about how men can support their spouses with PMDD. Thank you, Susie for being on the podcast and for bringing light and understanding to PMDD and PME. You are doing live-saving work!

Decluttering and organising strikes a growth chord for me. What I want: ease and flow, energised focus and creativity What I do: avoid organising and tidying, pile stuff up, prioritise other things What I get: mental and environmental clutter, chaos and frustration! Growth and decluttering both involve diving into the mess, getting dirty and rising up changed, improved and more confident in our environment and lives. No doubt you have heard of Marie Kondo and her motto of "keeping what sparks joy". Beyond house-hold items; people, situations and jobs may not spark joy and shall be discarded! These products account for less that 3% of sales in the market but are driving more than 30% of category growth. Some industry insiders are predicting that this is a precursor for the demise of traditional mainstream brands altogether. These 3 factors for success are evident in the food businesses featured in our Season 2. episodes, as they demonstrate;Product & Brand AuthenticityConsumer ClosenessProduct DiscoveryA huge thank you to all our Season 2. podcast guests for sharing their inspiring business stories and expertise with us, and to our long-term sponsor of the Eat Drink Innovate podcast, the Food Innovation Centre at Monash. Sleepover   Quote of the Week   "Before you call someone lazy or judge them, try to imagine their perspective, beliefs, and abilities and forget yours. That is, respond with curiosity and empathy. When you do, I predict you’ll find yourself understanding their choices. You can also use a project bag or stitch marker by a podcaster! The design, yarn/fiber and/or project bag must be from a knitting/crochet/fiber podcaster. (Not all 3, just one of those to qualify). Spinning also counts, just make sure it’s a finished product. Use the chatter thread for discussion. Make suggestions. There are TONS of podcasts out there and almost no one knows about all of them, so if you know of a podcaster designer/yarnie/bag maker, feel free to share with us! This innovative tool was created by Claudia, a knitter, and her engineer husband, to protect delicate knitting needles from damage while on a project in your knitting bag. Claudia had broken several pair of 00 wooden sock needles by being jostled around in her knitting bag and was desperate to find a way to protect her delicate, and expensive circulars. That was the Needle Keeper's original intention, but...it has turned out the Needle Keeper is perfect for keeping your live stitches from falling off the needle, and for protecting the joints (the needle to cable area). Extremely lightweight, practically indestructible, you can shove everything in your knitting bag and never worry. They make reaching into your bag and grabbing your project worry free, no dropped stitches!     They come in 12 beautiful, bright colors, which makes them easy to see deep in your bag! Buy a different color for each project, contrasting against the current yarn color, or color-code for the type of project you're working on. Knitters LOVE them, read the nearly 1,000 5-star reviews on Etsy and pick up a few. The coupon deal for the PalKal 2016 is buy 4 and get one free from their Etsy shop, Fiber To Fabric Magic! Put 5 in your cart and one will ring up FREE. Claudia will be giving away 2 Needle Keepers to a lucky listener of this Podcast, and you get to choose which colors you'd like!     Knitting Talkback: Yarn (The Movie)  I was recently sent a screener copy of Yarn and I really enjoyed it. It was a different take on the fiber for me, but I found it really interesting and informative. Check out the website for more information about where you can see this film.    Non-Knitting Segments   One Pot Wonders One Pot Summer Vegetable Pasta One of the easiest recipes I've made.      Love it or Leave it This one is a combo! By Samantha Bee   Prada and Prejudice by Katie Olver     I started reading and/or listening to:  A Murder in Time by Julie McElwain   Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari     Briefly I mentioned that my grandparents live in Rainelle, West Virginia, the site of some major flooding last week. They are (thankfully) ok and their home was spared, but they are lucky to live on a mountain. The town was completely destroyed, many people lost their homes and everything they have. This episode is sponsored by Infinite Twist and Fix-a-Stitch!    Knitting Segments   Show-Ready Knits   Pure Joy by Joji Locatelli I bought the Argentine yarn from Pura Hilados   This brings my Stash Dash total to 1, 124 yards or 1027.8 meters.   I became curious about why some shawl patterns use a garter tab for the starting point, so I did a little research. Check out this blog post at Kelbourne Woolens about garter tabs.   This got me to thinking: how have I gotten away this long without doing a garter tab? What is something in knitting that you can't believe you have never done before? Join in the discussion on the Episode 54 thread on Ravelry!   Stash Dash is a Summer KAL hosted by the Knit Girllls video podcast!      Knits in Rehearsal Worsted Boxy by Joji Locatelli Yarn is Miss Babs Yowza in Oyster   Thank goodness for my Strauch Ball Winder!      Rainbow Vanilla Socks in White Birch Fiber Arts   I'm using the OMG Heel pattern by Megan Williams   Hey Lady Hey is doing a Solidarity Craft-a-long to show support for the victims and families of the mass shooting in Orlando Florida.    This episode of Actually Knitting is sponsored by Infinite Twist. Still looking for that perfect project for the PalKal? Infinite Twist has teamed up with Jan Hamby from the TwinSet Designs Podcast to create a stunning gradient kit for Jan's latest shawl design, Gradient Angles. Using the same foundation as a mitered square, this delightful shawl flies off the needles!" The prize: A Gradient Angles kit, including Jan's pattern, all the hand-dyed yarn you'll need to complete the project, a bamboo circular needle, stitch markers, yarn needle, two-color pattern marking pencil, and a handy gauge card.   Enter "PalKal" as your secret code and get a free pair of 50 gram miniskeins with your order! Auditioning Knits I am thinking about casting on the Solaris Shawl by Melanie Berg with my Pal Kal Mini Kit from One Twisted Tree.    By the way, if you like Melanie Berg then stay tuned for a fun KAL.    Also will be casting on some socks with my Twist Fiber Studio Fairview Fingering Yarn that I purchased last fall. Not sure about the pattern, but likely something from Susie White of the Prairie Girls Knit and Spin podcast.   I will house this project in a Fat Squirrel bag which was gifted to me by Sarah Shoo of the Cultivate and Create podcast.    Knitting News, Notes and Events If you hear this episode on or around June 15th, 2016, go to the Ravelry thread for a special Pal Kal Mini Kit giveaway.    PalKal2016 officially begins on June 15th!   Rules:  The basic idea is to support a podcaster you listen to or watch by knitting one of their patterns and/or using their yarns for your project. You are encouraged to take advantage of the coupon codes offered by our sponsors, but you are not limited to those podcasters for the KAL. Sponsors and coupon codes are listed in the appropriate threads and will be listed on the podcast as well. Please post finished objects in the non-chatter thread and include a link to the podcaster you are supporting. Enter as many projects as you like! There is no minimum yardage requirement or limit to the projects you can enter. If you use more than one podcaster product/design/bag/etc on one project, you may create multiple entries for that project. For example: Knit the Zigzagular Socks by prairiegirlsusie using yarn by Oh! Loops and use a project bag by thefatsquirrel, you can enter that project into the FO thread 3 separate times, just link to each podcaster seperately in each post. A note about project bags: a project bag may only be entered into the contest one time for an entry. (You can’t just keep using a podcaster project bag over and over and entering the contest that way). The same applies for stitch markers. Wips count! Just finish them between June 15 and September 15, 2016. You must be a member of the Actually Knitting Podcast Group to win. Have fun supporting a podcaster designer or yarnie! Please support as many different podcasts as you can! Please do not chatter in the non-chatter thread. It makes it more difficult to draw a winner! Thanks so much to all of our sponsors both of coupon codes and prizes. PALKAL 2015 PalKal is happening starting June 1st! I answer a few questions I've been asked on the boards, but feel free to ask anything that you think of. The most important update is that I've decided that you can use Wips for the PALKAL. Please use #palkal2015 on Instagram. I can't wait to see what you decide to do!   This is the biggest KAL of the year for Actually Knitting!  The Podcast Along Knit Along will start officially on June 1st, but let’s start our plotting and planning now! Here are the rules: Cast on: June 1 Bind off: September 1 The basic idea is to support a podcaster you listen to or watch by knitting one of their patterns and/or using their yarns for your project. You can also use a project bag by a podcaster! The design, yarn/fiber and/or project bag must be from a knitting/crochet/fiber podcaster. (Not all 3, just one of those to qualify) Use the chatter thread for discussion. Make suggestions. There are TONS of podcasts out there and almost no one knows about all of them, so if you know of a podcaster designer/yarnie/bag maker, feel free to share with us! You are encouraged to take advantage of the coupon codes offered by our sponsors, but you are not limited to those podcasters for the KAL. Sponsors and coupon codes will be announced in an upcoming episode. Please post finished objects in the non-chatter thread and include a link to the podcaster you are supporting. Enter as many projects as you like. Each project gets a separate post in the non-chatter thread. A note about project bags: a project bag may only be entered into the contest one time for an entry. (You can’t just keep using a podcaster project bag over and over and entering the contest that way). You must be a member of the Actually Knitting Podcast Group to win. Have fun supporting a podcaster designer or yarnie! Please do not chatter in the non-chatter thread. It makes it more difficult to draw a winner! Use the tag PALKAL2015 on Ravelry and #palkal2015 on Instagram In addition, I've decided that you can use WIPS for this KAL. Yay!    We have some great sponsors and wonderful prizes that I can’t wait to share with you all! Let’s make some plans for summer knitting!    The coupon codes will be listed on the podcast and are available here as well:   Dianne from Suburban Stitcher, use code PALKAL2015 for 10% off of any order May 25th through July 31st   Jennifer from the Down Cellar Studio Podcast, use code PALKAL15 for 30% off through June 15th   Alana Dakos from Never Not Knitting, use PALKAL for 25% off of any PDF pattern (not books)   Megan from Stockinette Zombies, use ActuallyKnittingPalKal for 30% off through the end of July   Anne from the Carolina Fiber Girls, use PALKAL50 for 50% off any of her patterns   Elizabeth Green Musselman from Dark Matter Knits, use the code PalKal15 for 20% off of any of her self-published patterns, through September 1st.   Allie Coffey from Caffeinated Knitting Video Podcast, use the code PALKAL2015 for 50% off of her patterns.   Daniela from Caffeinated Knitting Video Podcast, use the code ACTUALLYCAFFEINATED for 50% off her patterns through September 1.  Angela from the Revelations of a Delusional Knitter Podcast, use the code PALKAL2015 for 25% off of her patterns.   Sarah Shoo from In a Sknit is offering her new pattern, Whiz Bang Socks, for $1.50 with the code ActuallyKnitting15   Prizes:  Suburban Stitcher/Dianne 1 sock size draw string bag of winner's choice from her Etsy Shop.   Danie from The Prarie Girls Knit and Spin podcast and One Twisted Tree 1 skein of her Prime Sock Yarn in the Hinky Punk colorway   Mel from With Mel Video Podcast 3 patterns from her Ravelry Store   Stacie/Must Stash Yarns and Video Podcast 1 skein of her Extended Play Version of Darkside of the Moon   Emily/Fibretown 1 skein of yarn   Megan Williams/Stockinette Zombies Sock Pattern kit that includes yarn, pattern and a bag   Anne/Carolina Fiber Girls 1 sock pattern   Estela/One More Row Please (blog/designer) 2 patterns from her Ravelry Store   Laura/Gynx Yarns 1 skein of   Brenda Castiel/designer 3 patterns from her Ravelry store   Maria/Stitched in Sweden A pattern from her Ravelry Store   Jennifer from the Down Cellar Studio Podcast, Trickle Shawl Kit from Infinite Twist   My other plans for the Pal Kal are:    Los Monos Locos in my One Twisted Tree Prime Sock in the Disco Lemonade color way   Pump of the Volume Socks, Cool Clavicle Cover and the Seamless Saloma Slippers, all by Megan Williams.    Aila Grace Shawl by Jennifer Lassonde.    Swirl E Socks by Susie White.      Gleener Giveaway Contest ended on June 15th, listen up to see if you are the lucky winner!   Knitting Talk Back: Blocking   Listen up for some information on blocking, what my go-to tools are and a review of the Knitter's Pride Blockers.                This tutorial from Craftsy has some great information for new and experienced knitters.    Non-Knitting Segments   What a Crock Spaghetti Squash Chow Mein This recipe isn't truly a crockpot recipe, but I use mine to cook the spaghetti squash!
