Hi, Profit Designers! As we at Tap the Potential gear up for a number of special, upcoming projects, we're taking this time to bring you some of our most popular episodes from the vault! We hope you enjoy it, and we'll be back with new episodes for you very soon! In this episode, you're going to get some great ideas that are really going to get your wheels turning. Dr. Sabrina talks to Tom Antion, an internet multi-millionaire who has never had a job. He has been a professional speaker and entertainer since 1988. Tom has a really outrageous hiring method that takes guts to implement. Dr. Sabrina verifies, however, that it's a good method to use, and that it will work. Tom is the founder of The Great Internet Marketing Retreat Center, the only licensed, dedicated internet marketing school in the country, with the only facility of its kind in the world. People come from all over the world to study internet marketing there, in the lap of luxury. Tom also has a new podcast, called Screw The Commute, where he teaches people how they could live pretty much two for the price of one, if they didn't have to sit in their car on the way to work, making other people rich. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Tom shares the one life lesson that he has carried forward. How Tom got his outrageous idea for an entertainment company, Prank Masters. Tom explains how he got back up, kept humor around him, and started all over again when things fell down for him. Tom talks about how he got into the speaking business. Tom had to learn how to become a great, professional public speaker. Tom realized that if you try to be excellent at something yourself, people will notice and they will often ask you to teach them. Tom used what his Dad had taught him about being excellent when the commercial internet came along, around 1994. For Tom, the overriding principle is to be really excellent at what you do so that other people will ask you to teach them how to do it. This is how he got to be a big internet guru. Although it's good to have long-term dreams, you have to do the step-by-step and your emphasis will change over time. Some tips for keeping up with the constantly changing internet, for the online portions of your business. Tom discusses the ins and outs of his outrageous, street-smart hiring process. Why it's best to pay young people for the job, rather than by the hour. Tom explains how to place a hiring ad his way. Tom's ads are unprofessional, yet they really work. Tom's hiring process will help you to filter the wrong people out and speak to the right people. Dr. Sabrina's book, How To Hire The Best, features interviews with real-life entrepreneurs about their hiring practices. Tom gives his thoughts, as an entrepreneur, about what he has learned about being intentional and he also explains how he designed his business and how he runs it. You can keep your costs low by learning and doing as much as possible yourself. Only delegate once you know what you're doing. How to make your hobby legitimately tax-deductible. Tom discusses what inspired him to start his podcast and he gives some of the topics that he gets into. Tom gives some great tips from the training he does on how to do a $50,000 video production for pennies on the dollar. Tom explains how you can use Shortkeys for a PC and Keyboard Maestro for a Mac to save yourself millions of keystrokes and to provide lightning-fast customer service. On this episode, we spoke with Tom Stern, writer of Fear Less, Sell More: Find Your Courage and Make Millions. Tom was the black sheep in a family of lions. Tom's father was one of the founders of cable television, and his great grandfather, a prominent philanthropist, was the CEO and chairman of Sears, Roebuck and Co. at the turn of the twentieth century. As an ADHD child with dyslexia, Tom was unable to live up to those lofty expectations, and as a result, suffered from extreme anxiety. Over time, by developing his creativity, as a jazz musician, stand-up comedian, writer/producer for HBO, and comic strip creator, he found his greatest success in sales. First as a talent agent for celebrity comedians and then as president of his own executive search firm. Leveraging what he calls "sales expression" he has sustained excellence in the business world for over a quarter century. Tom's passion is influence, using logic and emotion to engender courage in others. It is Tom's goal to help others achieve success in sales and realize their dreams by overcoming their fears. His new book is now available through Tom's site: tomsterncentral.com/. On this episode you will hear about: What vocal expression is How to maximize the utilization of your imagination Courage and where it comes from How to use intention, along with your voice, to bolster your courage What sales expression is How Tom's success and failures informed his life and my book Making a connection with other people, utilizing sales expressiveness Production Credits: The Self Made Strategies Podcast is a SoftStix Productions LLC jawn. "At its core, this study emphasises that our bodies are important. Anything that gets you out of your head and creating an in-the-moment kind of awareness is a powerful and useful thing. Physical awareness is an extra option and options have value."Scientific research, especially in the psychological sciences, is rarely linear. There is no definitive answer and, as with most things, context is important. This is evident in the conversations that have sparked around 'Power Posing' or the idea that body positions can change the way you think and feel.My guest today's guest is Tom Loncar, executive coach, writer, researcher on leadership psychology and mindset and founder of “Grow Gravitas." In a recent article for the British Psychological Society Tom examined power posing's 10-year journey and the role that it has played in social science research. It's a great article about a fascinating topic - whether small postural adjustment make us feel more powerful when facing stressful situations. But while power posing is interesting in its own right, it has an even more fascinating back story that sees it embroiled in psychology's replication crisis'.Listen in to hear Tom and I geek out about:Power posing: What it is and why it took the world by storm. Why there is rarely a 'silver bullet' for behaviour change. How Tom got started in his in-depth research by diving down rabbit holes.A short but long history of embodiment or 'embodied cognition' and how our bodies influence our emotions. The role Power Posing played in behavioural science's 'replication crisis'.Where the dialogue is now for 'power posing' and where it might take us next.About our guest:In addition to his work as an executive coach and researcher, Tom is also a regular contributing writer on leadership for the Australian Financial Review and BOSS Magazine. His articles have covered a wide variety of topics examining leadership growth and the often unseen barriers that can get in the way of doing what matters.Where to find Tom:Twitter - https://twitter.com/TomLoncarLinkedIn - https://linkedin.com/in/tloncarResources mentioned in this episode:A Decade of ‘Power Posing': Where Do We Stand? by Tom LoncarDoes "Power Posing" really work? When we hear about fertility issues, we often hear stories from the female's perspective. In the middle of his own family building process, Director Tom Webb realized that he didn't often hear the male's point of view as a couple battles infertility. Because of this, Tom set out to make a documentary, The Easy Bit, that focused on some of the physical aspects, but mostly the emotional journey a male goes through as he supports his partner and they navigate the challenge together. The Easy Bit explores the lives of six men who tell their stories openly and honestly about the male perspective of fertility treatment—looking through the camera lens, examining maleness through society's perception, and how fertility impacts maleness. Tom shares the experience of creating the Easy Bit along with his difficult personal fertility journey with his wife, addressing the difference between the United States and United Kingdom's healthcare systems when trying to have a baby and the extreme process his wife needed to meet to qualify for paid IVF treatment in the UK. Tom also addresses the experience of being a partner who is going through a physically and emotionally painful fertility journey with a positive surprise result. Finally, Tom describes in one word what family means to him. Show notes: https://www.storkdpodcast.com/season2 In This Episode: [ 1:27 ] Tom's introduction [ 3:17 ] Tom's fertility journey with his partner [ 5:08 ] Differences between US and UK healthcare systems and navagitating different requirements of the UK system when trying to have a baby [ 9:17 ] Gastric Bypass Surgery, the extreme process Tom's wife went through to meet the UK's healthcare system to qualify for IVF treatment [ 13:17 ] Tom's wife starts the IVF process [ 14:50 ] The trauma that unfolded from the IVF process [ 17:06 ] Addressing the topic of toxic masculinity and how to support your partner during the fertility process [ 19:07 ] How Tom's documentary came to fruition [21:31] The start of the documentary and getting men's perspective going through the infertility treatments [ 24:15 ] Points of similarity between the men's fertility experiences in the documentary [ 26:49 ] What surprises Tom learned from making the documentary [30:26] Giving the male perspective on infertility to clinical and medical staff community [ 31:03 ] Why the medical community was shocked when they first saw the documentary [ 33:09 ] Circling back to find out the outcome of Tom's fertility journey [ 38:49 ] Tom's playlist that would describe his fertility journey [ 40:36] The word that defines family for Tom [ 41:26] Where to watch The Easy Bit and how to find Tom Takeaways: Men feel like it's all on them to provide the best emotional and physical support to their partner going through the fertility journey together. However, this can lead to men overlooking their own emotional and physical needs. By providing adequate mental health care to men during fertility journeys, they are better equipped to care for their partner's needs, leading to both parties having their needs adequately met. Tackling the concept of “toxic masculinity,” which is exceedingly prevalent in today's society, needs to be addressed. By taking the first steps to dismantle it and provide mental health support to men, the emotional burden is processed more productively which is beneficial to both partners in the fertility journey. While facing fertility issues- finding a supportive community can be a helpful tool as you manage through treatments. Infertility affects both men and women, however you generally know the female's perspective. Helping men also have a voice during this time can be helpful for the couple as they experience it together. People who haven't faced infertility will probably not understand what you're going through. Connecting them to some resources on how to help family and friends cope through this time is important and helpful for all. Providing more support to men in a fertility journey can be beneficial to women Fertility treatments including IVF are not a guarantee for success and even though it may not work out for you and your partner, you may come out with a stronger relationship. "We work to live. We don't live to work." - Tom Grane When I first began my career in Hollywood the concept of life outside of work was completely foreign to me. I assumed the only way to reach my goals was to sacrifice my health and sanity for the sake of a great résumé, only to discover those early habits become lifelong habits if you’re not careful. Once this mentality sets in and you set this expectation with others it can be practically impossible to reverse. That is why I am actively trying to change the conversation around our “get it done at all costs” work culture and collaborate with employers and business owners who understand the importance of work-life balance. Early in my career I was fortunate enough to experience a work culture where well-being was a priority at what was then a small fledgling trailer & marketing agency. Fast-forward fifteen years and today Mob Scene is one of the top movie marketing companies in the business - largely because of the culture that co-founder and CEO Tom Grane created from the very start. This innovative company has been an integral part of the marketing campaigns for projects like Avatar, Stranger Things, Fast 9, Wonder Woman, Joker, Knives Out, and The Trial of the Chicago 7...and that’s just recently. Historically they have provided marketing and original content for more marketing campaigns than I could list if I had the entire episode to do so. Having a background as a studio executive for 20th Century Fox, Tom admits to having a strong work ethic, and he’s spent his fair share of hours working late and being away from his family. But his motivation when he founded Mob Scene was to create more flexibility with his time and be more available to his family, and he believed in fostering an environment that provides the same flexibility for his team. In our conversation we discuss a variety of topics that can help creatives better understand what it takes to get an opportunity at a company like Mob Scene, that can help producers and business owners better understand the importance of fostering work-life balance with your teams, and that can help all of us better understand how to navigate our constantly changing landscape of content whether we’re working from home, at the office, or adopting a hybrid work environment. “I know people that have gotten clean and sober off of their drug of choice... and have tried this 'medical marijuana' aspect of it... and... I don't know of anybody that was able to stay that way and maintain sobriety after going down that road.” -Tom Conrad Today, Ben and I are chatting about California Sober, brought to light recently by Demi Lovato on Joe Rogan's podcast, offering our opinions on it. While we aren't here to criticize how other people recover from addiction, as we are not witch burners, we just want to offer our opinions based on our own experiences being former addicts ourselves. How We Ultimately Feel About California Sober In her interview with Joe Rogan, Demi Lovato defines what she means by being California Sober, saying, “It's a term that a lot of people use to identify this path of moderation with the help of some green plants.” Our perspective on this is that that isn't going to work for everyone. We both agree that while marijuana isn't usually a gateway drug and wouldn't likely cause us to revert back to harder substances, it wouldn't likely have any benefit in our lives and would, in fact, likely hinder productivity. Give it a go if it works for you, but our experiences suggest that, again, it does not work for everyone. How People Like Joe Rogan Have Misunderstood the Twelve Steps The first step of the twelve steps is admitting that you are powerless in your addiction, and some people seem to confuse powerlessness with helplessness. If you were helpless, then there wouldn't be recovery programs. Being helpless refers to an inability to take action, but these programs offer things that you can do, ways to fix the problem. It isn't helplessness. In fact, if anything, it can actually be empowering. Our Experiences and How They Shape Our Opinion on Marijuana MaintenanceWe, for starters, have known people who have relapsed and even died of overdose after years of sobriety because they started smoking marijuana. Living in the Palm Beach County Area in Florida, we have also seen four local treatment centers adopt the marijuana maintenance treatment method. Two of them were actually shut down by the FBI and owners got arrested because of how addicts were being taken advantage of, one voluntarily shut down because of its clientele not being serious about actually wanting to recover, and, finally, someone that we know personally throwing in the towel on the program because of his perspective that it had absolutely no benefit to him. What the Best Approach Is in Our Opinion While, again, we are not witch burners and are not even against marijuana, there is absolutely nothing to support the idea that marijuana maintenance is a more effective treatment than abstinence based treatment. While marijuana maintenance (or California Sober) works for some, that doesn't seem to be the norm, so it is our belief that it is always better to completely abstain from illicit substances, that that's always the best approach. Listen in and hear us discuss our experiences and how they shape our opinions on this topic. Be sure to check out our new website where you can download any episode along with other useful information for those in recovery. Share this podcast with a friend and leave us a review! [09:54] Whether or not marijuana is a gateway drug and what kind of effect it could have on someone trying to maintain longterm recovery from harder drugs. [12:18] How Tom feels about Joe Rogan commenting on helplessness in the addiction and recovery community. [15:01] How Joe Rogan's perspective on the twelve steps is misguided because there is a difference between powerlessness and helplessness. [19:54] Marijuana Maintenance has been adopted in treatment centers in the Palm Beach county area of Florida, none of them successes. [24:00] Why abstinence from all illicit substances is the best path to recovery. [30:53] How recovery is not absolute or black or white. PTS or PTSD. You may have heard of it, but, did you know that many of our first responders and veterans suffer from it? During the service, many of the veterans (or almost all of them) had to see things that may be shocking for many of us. Today's guest, Tom Voss, has seen the most horrible tragedies and because of that, he developed PTS which led him to stumble upon the addictions field but he found the light in meditation. In this episode, we dove into subjects such as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how this can affect really hard the people that suffer it, how veterans and first responders deal with PTSD, how meditation can take you out of addictions; the subjects that not everybody talks about. About Tom Voss: Tom Voss served on active duty in the United States Army for three years, from 2003 to 2006. He served as an infantry scout in the battalion scout-sniper platoon. In October of 2004, Tom was deployed to Mosul, Iraq to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. After returning home, Tom struggled with reintegration and was diagnosed with PTSD in 2008. After being pushed to the brink of suicide, Tom knew he had to do something to help himself heal. In 2013, he teamed up with fellow combat veteran Anthony Anderson to plan and execute a 2,700-mile trek from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Los Angeles, California. This journey was captured on film by Emmy®-nominated documentary filmmaker, Michael Collins. The film, which has enjoyed theatrical releases in New York and Los Angeles and been screened at dozens of film festivals nationwide, is called Almost Sunrise. In November 2017 Almost Sunrise was broadcast nationally as part of the P.O.V. documentary series on PBS, resulting in an Emmy nomination. In this episode, John DiJulius talks with Tom Ryan, NCAA Championship head coach of the Ohio State University wrestling team. As an All-American college wrestler, Tom embraced his fair share of “chosen suffering.” It wasn’t until the sudden death of their five-year-old son, Teague, that Tom and his wife encountered “unchosen suffering” in a way they never wished. In this fire, they found their faith and a process to push through the pain. Tom’s new book, Chosen Suffering: Becoming Elite In Life And Leadership, is evidence of his passion to transform ordinary lives into elite champions – whether in sports, business, or life in general. Welcome to the premiere episode of BACK TO THE LODGE PODCAST. This podcast is framed around the value system of the outdoors and how that correlates with the veteran community outdoors, personalities, and country music. In today’s first episode, our hosts, Patrick Mudge & Matthew Dretzka together with our sound engineer Nick Conder will speak about the resiliency of blue and gold star parents who raised children that grew up, became a warrior, and paid the ultimate price. They will also express their sentiments and commemorate comrades who fell during the Extortion 17. Our three remarkable guests, Thomas O’Neill, Charlie Strange, and Dan Robinson are the proud and loving fathers of the brave and honorable service members who committed their lives serving the country and protecting the nation. Thomas O’Neill is the father of the Navy SEAL Rob O’Neill who killed Osama bin Laden. Charles Strange is a Gold Star father of Michael Strange, a Navy Cryptologist who served with an elite SEAL Team and was killed in action when the Chinook military helicopter operating with the call sign Extortion 17 was shot down while transporting an Immediate Reaction Force attempting to reinforce a Joint Special Operations Command unit of the 75th Ranger Regiment in the Tangi Valley in Maidan Wardak province, southwest of Kabul, Afghanistan. Charlie is also the founder of Michael Strange Foundation, a non-profit organization set up in the memory of Michael J. Strange which provides unconditional support and services to the families of recently fallen service members by professionals in several fields and also by those who have suffered similar losses so that the healing process can begin. "Normally, during this time of year, I am getting ready to see all of you at The Association of Water Technologies Annual Convention. But, as everything goes, this year, I figured that wouldn't be happening. " Those were my thoughts before I learned more about the virtual convention AWT is doing instead of an in-person event. Yes, I am sad that I cannot see all of the members of the Scaling UP! Nation! that attend this event every year. But there is so much the virtual option offers. So, if you are like I was and you feel bummed about not going to this in person, you are going to want to listen to this episode! You will find that there is so much going on virtually that you won't want to miss it. Our guest today is Tom Brandvold, CWT, this year's AWT President. Tom and the other AWT directors had to make hard choices this year. Tom shares what went into that decision to choose a virtual convention instead of our regular in-person meeting. Tom also shares tips, tricks, and tools that will allow you to get the most out of this virtual event. In addition to being this year's AWT President, Tom is a very accomplished water treater. I was able to ask him to share his water treater experiences and stories with us. You will not want to miss this episode. Tom Webster, SVP of Edison Research, describes his job as "telling the stories of numbers." He definitely make numbers come alive, and he's a great storyteller overall. So you’re generally okay with Tom as your guest if you didn’t discuss podcast topics in advance. My industry acquaintance may be self-effacing, but he has a steel trap mind for the insights Edison regularly uncovers about all things audio, and he shared quite a few in our ad hoc but fascinating conversation for Insider Interviews. The custom market research company helmed by Larry Rosin may be best known as the sole providers of exit polling data during U.S. elections, but Tom is best known for his big research reveals on webinars (now Zoom presentations) or at conferences. Research junkies lean in to hear which platform has the biggest “share of ear” and how differently are consumers engaging with Alexa. Basically, he’s the go-to guy for sharing and interpreting our evolving involvement with radio, podcasting, voice...even IoT and our social media habits. As Tom describes it, “I make sure that the data that we collect on behalf of our clients is understood contextualized, put into action and valued, and that people come back for more.” Here’s what’s “more” about Tom and a topline of our discussion: Little known fact? Tom likes words as well as numbers. This former English Lit professor is also the principal author of some widely cited studies and the co-author of The Infinite Dial, America's longest-running research series on digital media consumption, and The Mobile Commerce Revolution. In Episode 16, Tom shares some insider scoop from Edison's audio research – and his considered POV on the current state of radio broadcasting and the growth of podcasting (including some tips that can help you grow your own podcast). [00:01 – 03:25] Opening Segment More about Tom Webster, his role in Edison Research and a moving from academia to a marketing career [03:26 – 17:20] The Insider Scoop on Audio Research About Edison Research's broader offerings – like that exit poll and vote count data – and Tom’s area of focus: Audio More insider scoop from Tom WebsterVoice vs. Audio The growth of "smart speakers." Where are we – if anywhere -- with an FM chip for mobile phones? It might be your friend or a complete stranger who you’ll never meet again, but with your little deeds, you manage to remind them that they matter and cared for.To change someone’s life, you don’t need grand gestures, only your big kind heart. Why Obesity, Hunger, And Malnutrition Are Found Together In The Same People | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market and AirDoctorCoronavirus has got us thinking about a lot, including many parts of daily life that may not have crossed our minds before. A big one of those topics is food, and with unemployment at an all-time high, we’re seeing many people who need to utilize food stamps to help make ends meet. Unfortunately, the SNAP program (food stamps) caters to the purchase of cheaper, calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods over healthy, real, wholesome foods. We see that people who are food insecure and rely on programs like this are actually much more likely to be overweight or obese. The “N” in SNAP is for “nutrition,” and while there are SNAP benefits at beneficial food institutions like farmers’ markets, the program still has a long way to go to serve public health. Our food system is in desperate need of change, and as we look at current conditions in our world from COVID-19, we also see that the restaurant industry is in desperate need of help. The two actually go hand in hand. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I talk to Tom Colicchio, the chef and owner of Crafted Hospitality, which currently includes New York’s Craft, Riverpark, and Temple Court; Los Angeles’ Craft Los Angeles; and Las Vegas’ Heritage Steak and Craftsteak. In an effort to broaden his long-standing activism around food issues, Tom served as an executive producer to the 2013 documentary A Place at the Table about the underlying causes of hunger in the United States. This eye-opening experience led Tom on a journey to Washington DC where he has been a mainstay in our nation’s capital in the years since. From holding members of Congress accountable on their voting records around food to working with former FLOTUS Michelle Obama on the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, Tom has established himself as the leading “Citizen Chef” advocating for a food system that values access, affordability, and nutrition over corporate interests. This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market and AirDoctor.Thrive Market has made it so easy for me to stay healthy, even with my intense travel schedule.
