I tend to be opposed to putting things in boxes, and to me, the concept of ‘failure' is potentially another box. Is failure really failure? Or is it just an ‘obstacle' or a ‘learning experience?' Or maybe, is failure simply representative of the fact that you're out in the world doing things? In this episode, we're going to ‘unpack the box of failure' with Justin Skinner. In our conversation, we talk about the differences between ‘failures' vs. ‘obstacles' vs. ‘normalcy,' the importance of detaching the idea of failure from self-worth, why failure is relative, and how to leverage failure as a form of (healthy) motivation. We also discuss the concepts of failure and the importance of giving ourselves grace specifically as it applies to those of us who are entrepreneurs and self-employed. Justin grew up in Springfield, Missouri, on a dairy farm just north of the city limits. He is the oldest of four children and married to Kendra Joy Skinner. I never want my girls to change their bodies at the expense of their health or their happiness. At CWC, we want to help you achieve your goals on the outside, but also on the inside. Thinking that solving your physical goals are going to solve your problems will only lead you down a path of wasted time and money, exhausting yourself and never being truly happy or fulfilled. The best plan is one you can execute consistently. The starting point is to truly be okay with your body right now, today. In this week's episode of the CWC podcast I talk about letting go of things that no longer fulfill you. We (especially women) tend to stick with things that we think we should be doing without considering what we really want. Then, when we fall short of meeting these expectations, we villainize ourselves. Sometimes the most freeing thing we can do is look in the mirror and say, “this is me, and if nothing changes moving forward with my body, then I am okay with that." Sometimes the gym is not a priority, and that's ok. Sometimes meticulously tracking your food is not a priority, and that's ok. It may come back around, but it may not. The point is to do less things that make you miserable, and more things that sound like fun. Life is too short to spend in a gym if you would rather be outside, or on your couch watching movies, giving yourself the care you need in that moment. I have spent years deconstructing “rules” that I believed for so long to be true, like eating a certain number of meals a day, or not eating past certain times, or only eating carbs with protein. Rules like these kept me locked in a cage for most of my adult life, and now I am teaching other women how to free themselves from similar cages. No foods are "good" or "bad," they are all just foods. Once you remove the scary labels, you free yourself to enjoy your life. This week's episode of the CWC podcast was inspired by a conversation I had with a doctor who approached me to discuss nutrition. I am not a registered dietician or a nutritionist, but I explained how many of my clients who have visited dieticians have experienced restrictive, dramatic diet plans, which almost always lead to failure. I explained that at CWC, we take a very different approach; we educate our clients on how to make realistic, lasting changes, and connect them to our CWC family. We allow all foods, while removing the labels we place on them as well. Over the past 5 weeks (mainly due to being on a mood stabilizer!) I have also begun to let go of the idea that I need to be the same person who started this business: a gym rat who never strayed from her macros. This season of my life is about releasing old ways of thinking and existing, and I am exercising to feel good, not for a physical results. I am not tracking my food, but eating intentionally and focusing less on protein intake and more on getting quality foods back into my diet. In this episode of the CWC podcast I talk about some personal difficulties I've been dealing with over the past two years, and what I'm doing to get back on track. Since the BII, explant surgery, Covid, and living in a mobile home, I have been more off-plan than I have been since starting my transformation six years ago. Part of the problem is that I've been trying to maintain the same frantic schedule that I was when I was lifting 6 days a week. But I was burnt out; I wasn't getting the same feeling as I once was. I knew something had to change, so I began doing exercise that I truly enjoy again, primarily rollerblading. I've reduced my daily intake and have been sticking to it as closely as possible while not restricting myself, and things are finally starting to change. I am feeling better, more energized, and I am excited to workout again, but it took identifying and changing the things that were no longer working for me. This week on the CWC podcast, I sit down with Carla Rhodes. Carla is a wife of 22 years, mother of two (ages 19 and 17), an online boutique owner, and a fitness lover. At age 40, Carla was diagnosed with breast cancer and opted for a mastectomy with reconstructive surgery. Her implants were placed in 2017 following her reconstruction, and she underwent a revision in May of 2021 to have them moved to the top of the muscle. Eight weeks after her revision, she explanted due to rejection and severe infection. She experienced many symptoms prior to explanting, including weight gain, muscle fatigue, hip pain, frequent urination, brain fog, difficulty gaining muscle/losing weight, difficulty sleeping and breathing, and stomach bloat. It has been four weeks since her explant, and not only are all of her symptoms gone, she is also down 18 pounds. Carla's story is so special and I am excited to share it with you all. Obviously 2020 was not the year anyone expected, especially due to the COVID pandemic combined with political and social unrest around the world. But, there were still some highlights, and it's important to remember the good things that happened as we transition into a new year. Our advice? Use 2020 as a learning experience so that you can continue to BETTER YOURSELF and GROW into 2021. You have an opportunity to become a better and more balanced individual in the coming year. This can take many forms, which is why it is critical to SET GOALS for yourself to help track your progress throughout the year. Creating goals and sticking to them can help you in all areas of your life, and they are a great personal development method that can bring you fulfillment in your individual accomplishments. So, what do good goals, or RESOLUTIONS, look like? Goals need to be specific, challenging, and realistic. We recommend taking the first few days of 2021 doing a personal inventory of your life. Where are you right now? Physically? Emotionally? In your relationships? Financially? Knowing your starting point helps you create a more specific and realizable ending point. Once you've done that, now you can set some goals for yourself. Make sure to challenge yourself but at the same time recognize your current situation. For example, if you have a goal to workout four times per week, are you currently working out, or has it been a long time? Recognizing your current situation will allow you to see the challenge ahead of you. Now, we are definitely not discouraging setting lofty goals, just make sure they are realistic for what you want for yourself! Goals can be both short term and long term, so you can always set goals with a longer horizon if they are more lofty. Welcome back my friends, Wilk here with episode 25 of the Derate the Hate podcast talking today about those with which to associate. Have you ever heard anyone say "you're the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with"?There is an old adage that is said in many ways that we are the sum, or average, or product of those with which we associate with most. This is true in so many ways. It has been proven time and time again in business, wealth, and many other measurements of success. Have you ever thought about this adage in terms of attitude and how you treat others? Way back in episode 4 of our podcast I talk about how Smiles and Bad Moods are Contagious. This could not be more true.I now ask in each of our episodes "What have you done today to make your life a better life?" "What have you done today to make the world a better place?" I would strongly contend that one way to do both is to Be Better by Being Around Better. Those with whom you chose to associate and spend the most time will also be those who you end up emulating. I believe it is so important to highlight the good that many people do that goes unnoticed. There are a couple things this week I would like to highlight. Each week on our podcast I like to highlight a feel good story that may have been missed or left out of the national media. This week I'd like to highlight a couple great things. First, this week, Oct. 4-10 is mental illness awareness week. There is an organization that strives to bring awareness and better the lives for those suffering from mental illness the way we at the Derate the Hate podcast strive to better the attitude of everyone who listens. That organization is the National Alliance on Mental Illness. This is an organization doing really great work and is well worth checking out. We are in a period in history unlike any in the lives of those listening to this podcast. At a time, when due to the circumstances surrounding the response to the pandemic, suicides are up, depression is up, relapses in drug and alcohol abuse is up, sharing the hotline for NAMI may make a huge difference in the life of someone. The hotline for the National Alliance on Mental Illness is 1-800-950-6264 (1-800-950-NAMI)Second, there is a story that I caught out of Albany, NY about a school resource officer, Chris English working in conjunction with Albany school superintendent Kaweeda Adams to implement a "Do the Right Thing" program that encourages and rewards youth that are doing the right thing. "Do the Right Thing" is part of a national non-profit organization doing work to promote good things done by kids that may not otherwise be recognized and rewarded. It is always a beautiful thing to see our law enforcement working in a way which rewards youth and promotes the positive. Great things being done here and you can read more about that here!With that I'm going to wrap up episode 25. I'll ask again, what have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? Accept the things you cannot change, but do not accept the things that you can change. 3. Experiment, experiment, experiment. When trying something new that will equal positive results,experiment until it feels natural. Professional photographers will often describe their camera as an extension of their hand. Work with your tools until they feel entirely natural. 4. Know that you can operate at high levels and use your frequency and energy to create a proper work ethic. This may involve a change in diet or fitness level, but mind and body are closer than they appear. 5. Know your gifts and take them seriously. 6.
