This week on Disasters in the Making, Brad and Paul take on Champagne and Bullets, the 1993 indie action oddity also known as GetEven and Road to Revenge. Written, directed, produced by and starring John De Hart, with Wings Hauser, William Smith and Pamela Jean Bryant, this revenge thriller somehow mixes disgraced cops, corrupt judges, satanic cults, country singing, awkward romance and enough B-movie chaos to make the popcorn file a workplace complaint.

What starts as a scrappy Japanese zombie movie quickly becomes one of the most inventive, hilarious, and unexpectedly heartfelt horror-comedies of the last decade. This week on Cutting Deep into Horror, Henrique Couto & Rachael Redolfi dive into One Cut of the Dead (2017), Shinichiro Ueda's brilliant cult favorite about zombies, chaos, low-budget filmmaking, and the beautiful disaster of trying to make art when everything is falling apart. At first glance, One Cut of the Dead looks like a strange, messy, low-budget zombie movie. But stick with it, because this is a film that rewards patience in a huge way. What unfolds is a clever, funny, deeply affectionate tribute to filmmakers, actors, crew members, and anyone who has ever tried to pull off something impossible with no time, no money, and way too much pressure.Henrique and Rachael talk about what makes the movie's structure so special, how it balances horror and comedy, why the film hits especially hard for anyone who has worked behind the camera, and how its chaotic energy turns into something genuinely joyful.Inside this episode:Why One Cut of the Dead is best experienced knowing as little as possibleHow the movie transforms from zombie weirdness into filmmaking geniusThe joy, stress, and absurdity of independent film productionWhy the second half completely recontextualizes the firstHow Shinichiro Ueda turns a tiny movie into a massive crowd-pleaserWhy this modern Japanese horror-comedy became such a beloved cult classicIf you love zombie movies, Japanese horror, horror-comedy, cult films, or stories about the madness of making movies, this episode is for you.Watch the film on AMC+

Empire Records (1995) was chosen by Patreon supporter Nick, and it represents a perfect snapshot of mid-90s youth culture wrapped inside a modest studio comedy. Directed by Allan Moyle and produced by Regency Enterprises for Warner Bros., the film was developed during a period when studios were eager to tap into the alternative music scene and Generation X attitudes. Rather than focusing on blockbuster spectacle, the production centered on character-driven storytelling and the energy of independent record store culture, something that resonated strongly with the decade's music-obsessed audiences.Filming took place primarily in Wilmington, North Carolina, with production designers transforming a local storefront into the now-iconic Empire Records shop. The cast featured a mix of emerging young actors, many of whom would go on to have prominent careers in film and television. Although the movie underperformed during its initial theatrical release, it found new life on home video and cable television throughout the late 1990s. Over time, Empire Records developed a passionate cult following, becoming one of the defining nostalgia pieces for fans of 90s alternative culture and music-driven coming-of-age films.TRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISOne record store. One unforgettable day. And a group of employees who refuse to let the music stop. When a tight-knit crew of misfits faces the possibility of losing the place that means everything to them, emotions run high, tempers flare, and secrets start spilling out. Over the course of one chaotic day, friendships are tested, dreams collide, and the soundtrack of a generation plays loud.Empire Records — where the music is loud, the drama is louder, and the day will change everything.FUN FACTSEmpire Records was released during the height of the 1990s alternative rock boom, featuring a soundtrack packed with era-defining artists. The film helped popularize the phrase “Damn the man, save the Empire!”, which became a lasting cult quote among fans.Several cast members, including Liv Tyler and Renée Zellweger, were early in their careers when the film was released. The movie's soundtrack album became more commercially successful than the film itself, selling strongly throughout the 1990s.Many scenes in the film were trimmed or removed from the theatrical cut, with additional material later appearing in extended versions.October 8th has become known among fans as “Rex Manning Day,” inspired by one of the film's most memorable in-universe events. The movie is frequently cited as a cult classic of Generation X cinema, capturing the attitudes and anxieties of 90s youth culture. The fictional Empire Records store was inspired by the independent record shops that thrived before digital music changed the industry.Over the years, the film has inspired fan screenings, themed parties, and annual celebrations tied to its cultural references.Despite its modest box office, the movie's reputation has grown significantly thanks to home video and streaming-era rediscovery.Support the ShowIf you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.If you're listening on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, leaving us a 5-star review (and a short comment) really helps more people discover the show. Adrienne Barbeau joins Steve Kmetko for a candid and entertaining conversation about a career that has spanned Broadway, television, cult films, and animation.   Long before becoming a horror icon, Adrienne Barbeau first gained national attention playing Carol Traynor on the groundbreaking sitcom Maude opposite the legendary Bea Arthur. From there she built a career that moved effortlessly between stage, television, and film, appearing in classics like The Fog, Escape From New York, Creepshow, and Swamp Thing. She also became the unforgettable voice of Catwoman in Batman: The Animated Series, a role that continues to resonate with fans decades later.   In this episode, Adrienne looks back at her early days performing for U.S. troops overseas for just seven dollars a day, her Broadway run in Fiddler on the Roof alongside Bette Midler, and what she learned working with Bea Arthur on one of television's most influential sitcoms. She shares behind the scenes stories about working with directors like John Carpenter and George Romero, explains how she accidentally became a horror movie legend, and reveals why she never saw herself as the “bombshell” many fans remember from films like Cannonball Run.   Adrienne also talks about aging in Hollywood, why she has avoided cosmetic procedures, the surprising fan encounters that still happen at conventions, and how her children keep her grounded after decades in the spotlight.   It's a funny, insightful look at a remarkable career that continues to evolve more than sixty years after her first professional job.   This is Still Here Hollywood. I had interviewed Mark Jones on June 15, 2020. During the pandemic, nearly every filmmaker I reached out to was eager to talk and loved the idea of the podcast. Mark Jones was one of my first interviews and after sending him an e-mail, he agreed to come on the pod. Although he was well known in the cult world, few really knew how much of a genius he was or know of his cultural impact.  At the time of the interview, there was no talk of a “Leprechaun” 4K release, or a blu-ray stacked with special features and Jones explained to me that he had piles of unreleased footage, bloopers screen tests and more! All that was needed was demand from the fans and encouragement from podcasters.   Jones was one of my favorite interviews and I re-released the episode every year around St. Patrick's Day for everyone to pair with “Leprechaun.” Unlike previous releases, this one will be unedited so everyone can enjoy it in its entirety.  After the episode aired, he wrote to me saying he loved it and encouraged me to keep interviewing and follow my passion.  Rest In Peace , Mark. We unpack the world-building, the soundtrack, the spectacle, and why Tron always seems to arrive before audiences are ready for it. #NerdToKnowBasis,#Hades2,#TronAres,#SciFiMovies,#VideoGames,#GreekMythology,#HalloweenSeason,#CultMovies,#GamingPodcast,#FilmDiscussion,#GeekCulture,#SpookySeason,#CyberpunkVibes

Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain This week we continue our love for Midnight and Cult Movies. For this episode we return to the great Chilean-French filmmaker, Alejandro Jodorowsky. A Visionary Artist and Poet of the Cinema, Jodorowsky has created some of the most beautiful and challenging images and concepts ever conceived. Problematic, Polarizing, Poetic, and Personal, Jodorowsky's films exist as islands of beauty in a world of Cinema too often overwhelmed by commerce - established, continuinuing, and obvious proven projects, as well as "safe" childrens' fair. Jodorowsky digs deep into the humanity, history, and struggles of the species. The Holy Mountain is a powerful film that is not easily digested or - even - understood, but the poetry of the images in this film continue to haunt audiences since its release over a half century ago. Take a listen and make the decision if you wanto to make the dive into this beautiful and rewarding film. As always, we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com - Many, Many Thanks.  For those of you who would like to donate to this undying labor of love, you can do so with a contribution at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/watchrickramos - Anything and Everything is appreciated, You Cheap Bastards.

Strap in and charge up the Mr Fusion, because this week on Born To Watch, the boys head back, forward and sideways through time with our full Back to the Future Part 2 (1989) Review. Whitey, G Man and Will settle into the DeLorean for one of the most ambitious sequels of the 1980s, breaking down timelines, hoverboards, self-lacing Nikes and all the glorious 80s optimism jammed into Robert Zemeckis' wild ride. The episode kicks off with the crew riffing on 1989 as a powerhouse movie year, then quickly dives into how Back to the Future Part   2 faced enormous expectations. With a to be continued tease at the end of the original, fans were primed, and the pressure was real. As the boys say, sequels rarely outshine their predecessors, but every now and then you get an Empire Strikes Back or a T2. So where does this one land?Whitey shares how the film was a childhood favourite, the one he rewatched the most, and how time has shifted his appreciation back to the original. Gow reveals he saw it at the cinema on release and has clocked well over 15 viewings since, instantly transported by Alan Silvestri's iconic score. Will talks about how the franchise has simply always been there, one of those movies that defined growing up.From there, the episode fires through the good, the bad and the very strange. There's deep love for the hoverboard, the power-lace Nikes, and that brilliant rooftop confrontation where Marty lures Biff over the edge before swooping up in the DeLorean. The crew gives full credit to the groundbreaking split-screen effects, the energy of Michael J. Fox juggling multiple characters, and the perfect dual performance from Fox and Christopher Lloyd, who are operating at peak one-two punch level. They also dig into the weird bits the film never fully explains. Could Old Biff actually operate the DeLorean? Why does he get sick travelling through time when no one else ever has? Why do Jennifer and Jennifer faint from seeing each other, but Biff does not? How does Marty not realise Hill Valley 1985 has turned into a dystopian biker slum the moment he steps out of the car? From Jaws 19 to the brilliant Jaws VHS window cameo, from Indiana Jones nods to manure trucks, the boys unpack every Easter egg this film throws at you. And of course, there's a big chat about whether Biff Tannen's alternate 1985 persona is really just 80s Donald Trump in a green tracksuit. (Spoiler, yes.)The episode also dives into box office numbers, casting trivia, Elizabeth Shue stepping in as Jennifer, and some cracking tangents, including Huey Lewis, yacht rock, Stranger Things, The Little Mermaid, and even John Farnham fronting LRB.By the time the boys reach question time, they've covered everything from the butterfly effect through to whether a single rich bloke can really break the fabric of time. It's pure Born To Watch chaos, big laughs and deep nostalgia for one of the great sequels of our generation. If you love time travel, manure trucks and three blokes talking absolute cinematic nonsense, make sure you follow Born To Watch on Spotify and Apple. Drop us a five-star review, send us a voicemail at borntowatch.com.au and buckle up for the next kickass credit song from the House Band.
