For episode 666, Bobby dives into some of the darkest myths and wildest conspiracy theories in music history. He breaks down the legend of Robert Johnson supposedly selling his soul to the devil at the crossroads, why virtuoso musicians were once accused of being possessed, and how Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin became tied to satanic rumors. Bobby also gets into the strange theories surrounding “Hotel California,” the infamous “Paul is dead” Beatles conspiracy, backward masking hysteria, and whether there’s really anything sinister behind the 27 Club. Along the way, he separates the stories from what actually happened and looks at why people have always been so quick to connect great music with something darker. Note: This epiosde was originally released in August 2023.Detectives believed they had identified the murderer, and when they entered the bedroom of 18-year-old Danyal Hussein in south-east London, they found something extraordinary. Among his belongings was a handwritten note, signed in his own blood, which described a pact he claimed to have made with a demon called Lucifuge Rofocale.According to the beliefs surrounding black magic, Lucifuge Rofocale was said to be in charge of the government and treasury of Hell, acting on the orders of Lucifer. The pact Hussein had written described a chilling bargain: he would murder six women every six months in return for financial rewards, including the promise of winning the lottery. What detectives had discovered would give them a disturbing insight into the thinking of the teenager they believed was responsible for two brutal murders.I release new episodes of the UK True Crime podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please do join me on Tuesday for the next episode.Find out more about me, Adam Lloyd, & UK True Crimehttps://uktruecrime.comSupport me at Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/UKTrueCrimeBuy Me a Coffeehttps://buymeacoffee.com/uktruecrimepodcastWatch my YouTube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@Adam-uktruecrime/videosJoin UK True Crime Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/UKTrueCrime Hosted on Acast. Weird Darkness: Stories of the Paranormal, Supernatural, Legends, Lore, Mysterious, Macabre, Unsolved

A private eye takes a dead girl's case for a father who can't afford him, and comes home with a box of gardenias that have been cut for a month and still smell fresh.EPISODE PAGE (includes list of sources): https://weirddarkness.com/noir-gardeniasonadeadlaneTRANSCRIPT: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/55nmcphxTHE REAL CASE BEHIND THIS STORY: The story in this episode is a fictionalized dramatization. Invented for it are the detective, his office, the gravedigger, the specific conversations, and the telephone call, and every name of a person or a place has been changed. The case underneath it is real.On the night of Thursday, June 24th, 1948, seventeen-year-old Mary Jane Reed, a switchboard operator, went on a first date with Stanley Skridla, a twenty-eight-year-old Navy veteran and telephone lineman from Rockford. They drank in taverns in Oregon, Illinois, a town on the Rock River in Ogle County, and the last place anyone could name was the Stenhouse, out on Route 2 at the south edge of town. They left around eleven-thirty. Skridla was found the next morning in the ditch along County Farm Road, shot with a .32. Mary Jane was found five days later along Silica Road, now called Devil's Backbone Road, shot once through the head, her slacks off her and her mother's wedding ring still on her hand. Roughly fifty people were questioned within a week. Nobody was ever charged, and the case was off the front pages by autumn. The casings, the photographs and the investigation reports all disappeared in the decades that followed. On November 15th, 1999 – Mary Jane's birthday – an untraceable floral arrangement addressed to her arrived at the old Stenhouse, by then the Road House, on a day the bar was closed. The owner, Mike Arians, had just been elected mayor, and the case has occupied him ever since. Her brother Warren Reed had her exhumed on August 23rd, 2005. Inside the burial vault, beside the casket, investigators found a dress and slip wrapped in newspapers dated June 25th, 1948 – four days before anyone found her. In 2007, forensic anthropologist Linda Klepinger examined the remains released to the family and reported that the skull and one vertebra had come from a different person. The DNA test that would settle it has never been run. Skridla was exhumed in 2015 on Arians's theory that Mary Jane's skull had been hidden in his coffin; it held one man and nothing else, though two .32 slugs came out of the ground with him and neither matched the gun Arians submitted.Warren Reed died on December 23rd, 2023, at eighty-one, without ever learning whose skull was in his sister's grave. The homicides remain open and unsolved. The full account – the fifty interviews, the suitor in La Crosse, the missing wallet the record can't agree on, the six years of court fights, the $25,000 reward for a skull nobody ever produced, and the haunting at the roadhouse – is documented in detail here:Mary Jane Reed's Illinois Grave Held Someone Else's Skull.WeirdDarkness® is a registered trademark. BCS 361 - Filling Live Events Fast: The Step-by-Step Approach That Works

Episode Summary In this episode, Karl Bryan and Rode Dog are joined by guest Chutes as they dive deep into the realities of business coaching success, the psychology behind high-performing coaches, and practical frameworks for filling live events, recruiting talent, and building a business you could sell tomorrow (even if you never want to). The duo address why most business owners regret selling their businesses, how to break free from nervous system roadblocks, and the myths of retirement and "following your passion." Packed with street-level tactics and high-level mindset shifts, the episode is a must-listen for any coach wanting to elevate their impact—and their income. Key Topics Covered What Separates Struggling vs. Dominant Coaches Karl Bryan explains that action (not just planning) is what divides the mediocre from the masters 03:33. Struggling coaches obsess over lead generation; winners obsess over creating value, up-leveling their operating system, and honing a world-class deliverable 04:09. Why Most Exiting Owners Have Regret Karl Bryan shares the sobering stat: 73% of owners regret selling their businesses 07:27. The myth of the "big payday" vs. reality—a deal often means less cash, complicated earn-outs, and a shell of your former company 09:21. The right way to exit is building a sellable business, headhunting successors, and prioritizing tight contracts with expert legal help 12:01. Recruiting Top Talent in Any Industry For hard-to-hire trades, don't just post an ad—sell a vision, recruit from outside your market, and lead like a college football recruiter 16:01. The secret is to approach hiring as outreach, not just intake 13:16. Mastering Your Nervous System for Ultimate Performance The biggest blocks are psychological, not tactical—if you're stuck, look at your environment, self-connection, and relationships, not just your to-do list 18:29. Build meaningful connections, manage stress through self-awareness, and focus on root causes rather than just treating symptoms 19:43. The Real Meaning of Retirement & Passion Karl Bryan breaks down why "retirement" is often an illusion that leads to boredom, divorce, or addiction 28:14. Instead, shoot for "semi-retired for life"—keep a handful of clients you love and never truly stop delivering value 32:05. Don't chase passion blindly—excel at what you do, fall in love with service and progress, and your business will love you back 36:14. Karl's No-Excuses Blueprint to Filling an Event in Five Days Pick up the phone like your life depends on it, research new/local businesses, and genuinely care about the value you bring 43:34. Build high-energy connections, focus on helping vs. selling, and don't be afraid of rejection 46:05. Notable Quotes "Struggling coaches focus on what they earn. The best focus on what they learn." — Karl Bryan 06:52 "The magic is not in the plan. The magic is in the planning." — Karl Bryan 05:01 "High-end buyers buy on identity. Lower-end buyers buy off utility and desire." — Karl Bryan 05:53 "Healing your nervous system isn't about becoming someone new. It's becoming you again." — Karl Bryan 25:05 "'Do what you love' is overrated. It's 'love what you do' and master the process." — Karl Bryan 38:42 "Progress equals happiness." — Rode Dog, show close 58:30 Actionable Takeaways Focus on Value, Not Leads: Obsession with helping and delivering unmatched results outlasts any marketing hack. — Shift your attention to client outcomes and continuously improve your deliverable. Recruit Boldly: Don't wait for great hires to find you. Go out, tell your company's vision, and proactively sell A-players on joining—no matter the industry. Plan for an Exit You May Never Take: Build your business as if you'll sell, but with the strength and systems that let you walk away or stay for life. Address Mindset Before Tactics: If you're "jammed up," investigate your environment, relationships, and sense of self-safety. Connection, not isolation, is the real performance unlock. Ditch the Retirement Myth: Aim for "semi-retirement"—a hands-on, purpose-driven lifestyle with a few high-impact clients, not endless leisure. Love What You Do—Don't Just Chase Passion: Mastery, service, and progress are the foundations of a fulfilling business. Passion follows excellence. Fill Events Fast by Taking Relentless Action: Research every local business. Call with conviction. Focus on getting them in the room to help—not just to sell. There is something almost relentless about the teaching of the Fathers on watchfulness. They will not allow us to imagine that there comes a point in the spiritual life when vigilance is no longer necessary. Age does not free us from it. Knowledge does not free us from it. Years of prayer do not free us from it. Even great spiritual gifts do not free us from it. “As long as you are in the body, do not leave your heart unguarded.” Until the last breath. At first this can sound severe. The image given by Abba Isaiah is striking: he is like a sparrow tied by the foot. It may fly upward and imagine itself free, but the cord remains. A single tug can bring it back to the earth. Likewise, the Fathers tell us that the enemy waits at the crossroads, lays traps along the path, makes use of small thoughts and seemingly insignificant compromises, and patiently seeks an opening into the heart. Yet if we read these sayings merely as a catalogue of demonic strategies, we have misunderstood their purpose. The Evergetinos is not trying to make us fascinated with evil. Nor are the Fathers trying to produce souls that are perpetually looking over their shoulders, anxiously examining every movement of the heart. They are teaching us watchfulness because they desire something infinitely greater for us. They want us to discover how precious the heart is to God. Indeed, hidden within these rather frightening descriptions is one of the most beautiful statements in the entire passage. The enemy himself is forced to confess concerning the monks: “You and your fellow-servants have a good Master, Who speaks to you gently and watches over you as His own children.” A good Master. One who speaks gently. One who watches over us as His own children. This is the heart of the teaching. We guard the heart because God guards the heart. Our vigilance is meant to become a participation in His vigilance over us. The commandments, prayer, repentance, the remembrance of God, the cutting off of thoughts—all of these are expressions of a divine solicitude that surrounds the human person. God desires to protect within us that which He has created for Himself. He desires that nothing should enter the heart that diminishes its freedom, darkens its vision, wounds its capacity for love, or turns its desire away from Him. The Fathers therefore teach us to recognize temptations, but recognition is not the end. We do not study the passions in order to become experts in the passions. We learn their movements so that we might become free to love. This distinction is everything. One can become extraordinarily knowledgeable about the spiritual life and still remain outside of its mystery. Abba Isaiah goes so far as to say that a man might possess knowledge, perform miracles, endure hardships, and yet still find himself vulnerable. None of these things constitutes the final security of the soul. Only love does. And so the passage unexpectedly opens into the words of the Apostle: “Love never faileth… but beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” Here the teaching reaches its true center. The Fathers are not leading us toward an ever more sophisticated fear of temptation. They are leading us toward perfect love. Watchfulness exists for love. Asceticism exists for love. The guarding of the heart exists for love. Repentance exists for love. Even the fear of God, rightly understood, is gradually drawing the soul toward that love in which fear itself is transformed. This is why the smallest thoughts matter. Not because God is fastidious or because the Christian life consists in anxiously avoiding infractions. The smallest things matter because love notices what interferes with communion. When one loves another deeply, one becomes sensitive to anything that introduces distance. So too with God. The vigilant heart begins to recognize thoughts of resentment, vainglory, judgment, self-pity, lust, anger, curiosity, or self-will not simply as violations of a rule but as movements that draw the heart away from the One whom it loves. The Fathers repeatedly tell us that great falls ordinarily begin very quietly. A thought is entertained. Then revisited. Then befriended. What first appeared insignificant gradually acquires familiarity, and familiarity acquires power. “The Devil disdains small sins; yet without them, he cannot lead man into greater sins.” But precisely the opposite is also true. Small acts of fidelity gather strength. A thought rejected for Christ. A moment of irritation surrendered. A judgment withheld. A temptation met immediately with the Jesus Prayer. A movement of vainglory quietly ignored. A moment of fear answered by trust. A suffering borne without abandoning God. These things too form habits of the heart. Grace upon grace. Fidelity upon fidelity. Love answering Love. This is why the teaching about vigilance should never leave us preoccupied with the enemy. Abba Makarios does not continue his journey thinking about the devil. He gives thanks to God and goes on his way rejoicing. That detail is extraordinarily important. The fruit of true watchfulness is not anxiety. It is thanksgiving. It is the growing realization that we are being kept. The Elder who asked to see the demons surrounding men discovered something similar. He saw them “like bees,” gnashing their teeth. Yet among them stood the Angel of the Lord rebuking them. The revelation was not given so that the Elder might become terrified by the number of demons. It revealed something far greater: the mercy of God was already there. Before we perceive the danger, God sees it. Before we understand the temptation, God knows it. Before we cry out, He has already drawn near. This is why the proper response to our weakness is not self-reliance but the prayer Abba Isaiah places continually upon our lips: Help me. Have mercy upon me. Perhaps this is one of the deepest lessons the desert has to teach us. Watchfulness eventually reveals not how strong we are but how utterly dependent we are upon God. The vigilant man discovers more and more clearly that he cannot preserve himself. And strangely, this discovery becomes peace. St. Isaac the Syrian understood this profoundly. The knowledge of one's weakness is itself a doorway into the knowledge of divine mercy. When a man begins to understand how fragile he is, he ceases trusting in himself and casts himself upon God. Then prayer becomes less an accomplishment and more a cry of the heart. Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. Not because God is reluctant to give mercy. Because mercy is already rushing toward us. This also changes the meaning of constancy. We remain vigilant until death not because God stands waiting for us to make one final mistake. We remain vigilant because love desires to remain with the Beloved until the end. The question becomes less, How do I avoid falling? And more: How do I remain with Him? This is the deeper meaning of guarding the heart. To remain. To abide. To keep the inner door turned toward Christ. To allow nothing to become more compelling than His presence. There will always be thoughts. There will always be temptations. There will always be some cord around the foot of the sparrow as long as we remain in this present life. The Fathers are remarkably sober about this. There is no moment when we may say, “Now I am beyond danger.” But neither is there a moment when we are beyond mercy. And perhaps that is what gives watchfulness its tenderness. We do not stand guard alone. The One who tells us to watch is Himself watching over us. The One who tells us to guard the heart has already claimed that heart as His dwelling. The One who warns us against the snares of the enemy does so because He desires our freedom infinitely more than we do. He does not expose the traps in order to frighten His children. He exposes them because He loves His children. And gradually the spiritual life becomes less and less a struggle to defend ourselves and more an abandonment to this love. We discover that the safest place for the heart is not in its own vigilance, strength, knowledge, or experience. It is in Him. So until the last breath we watch. Until the last breath we repent. Until the last breath we cry out. Until the last breath we refuse the thought that would carry us away. But beneath all of this there is something deeper and quieter: we allow ourselves to be drawn. Drawn by mercy. Drawn by beauty. Drawn by the gentleness of the good Master. Drawn by the One who has watched over us as His children from the beginning. And perhaps, in the end, perfect watchfulness is simply this: to love Him so deeply that the heart no longer wishes to go anywhere else. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:24:33 Bob Čihák, AZ: P 59, first paragraph on page, above #9 00:27:52 Bob Čihák, AZ: P 59, #10 00:31:33 James Hickman: The tug doesn't seem to be with the most tremendous force either, for the feeling or illusion of freedom or thinking in pride that we have overcome our vices, we get a tiny jerk on the rope and get caught off guard, falling hard. The battle you're facing is bigger than what you can see. As Christian men, it's easy to think people are the problem. But Scripture reminds us our struggle isn't against flesh and blood. Behind the confusion, temptation, fear, and discouragement is a real spiritual battle. But through Jesus Christ, victory has already been given. Our call is not to live in fear, but to stand firm, put on the full armor of God, and keep fighting the good fight. No matter what you're facing today, don't give up. God is with you. He has equipped you, and in Christ you are more than a conqueror.“For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers.” Ephesians 6:12CONNECT HERE

Dr. Gregory Saathoff, forensic psychiatrist at the University of Virginia and senior psychiatrist for the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, said the statement minimizes what Lindsay Clancy was going through. That is the state's closer telling a jury the state's theory is too small. He also gave prosecutors the cleanest planning testimony of the trial. Sometimes they sound surprisingly reasonable. Across five decades and three continents, killers have handed police the same explanation for the bodies they left behind – a demon made them do it. Can demonic possession be blamed for murder, or is it just the ultimate excuse for the inexcusable?EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources): https://weirddarkness.com/DevilInTheMirrorREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2p8pumw8FEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: From serial killers to seemingly ordinary individuals, a chilling phenomenon emerges as criminals claim demonic possession drove them to commit unspeakable acts. These disturbing cases, spanning decades and continents, blur the lines between evil and the supernatural, leaving us questioning the true nature of their heinous crimes. From the infamous Son of Sam to a father who claimed demonic voices compelled him to murder his own child, we'll explore some of these cases and let you decide if the devil made them do it. (Demonic Crimes) *** The Rose family lived comfortably in the picturesque Pleasant Valley in the late 1800s. However, oldest daughter Ceely's unrequited love for a neighbor boy led to a series of chilling events. Her obsession turned deadly, leading not only to death, but to a ghostly presence as well. (Love, Poison, and Ghosts – The Case of Ceely Rose) *** In the wild era of the 1920s and 1930s, organized crime flourished in the United States, with hitmen like the mysterious "Buster from Chicago" making a name for themselves. Known for his ruthless efficiency and chilling calm, Buster was responsible for many high-profile mob hits during the violent Castellammarese War. But who was Buster? (The Enigmatic Hitman, Buster From Chicago) *** In July 1993, 26-year-old Kristin Ann set out for her morning jog, but her run ended in a horrifying, fatal attack. The shocking crime has left her grieving family and community outraged and seeking justice. (The Murder of Kristin Ann) *** Imagine falling asleep on your usual train ride home, only to wake up at a mysterious, strikingly-white colored station with no way to leave. You encounter a strange child-like figure who warns you that this place is "one step before death." This is the eerie reality of Hitsuka Station, a ghostly train stop in Japan that traps unsuspecting passengers. Hey everyone...welcome to our bi-monthly ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vault!I love this episode because my initial experience of seeing this upsetting, darkly funny film (by the director of The Brutalist) was completely thrown overboard due to my guest Logan Lynn's harmful experience within the music industry when he was younger (which is the subject of his new documentary, The Pain And The Power). A fantastic discussion on a polarizing film that's a hard watch, but never leaves you.(Episode 25 originally aired on Feb 29th 2024).ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES:This week, we talk to indie pop dance legend and Kill Rock Stars recording artist, Logan Lynn, who picked the extremely intense music narrative film, Vox Lux, to discuss. We discussed the realities and tropes of music films, Lynn's early years as a teenager on a major label, the lack of protection for young artists within creative industries, addressing addiction and trauma in your art, the notion of selling out, backstage rituals, making fun of ‘The Devil', the Swedish Pop Mafia, how music gets taken out of context, whether or not Natalie Portman a convincing pop icon in the movie and so much more.So get ready to dance through the pain on this week's Revolutions Per Movie.Logan Lynn:https://loganlynnmusic.com/youtube.com/watch?v=M3Rkoe_UlR4REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss. Director Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2, Imaginary) has a new killer shark movie out now called The Devil's Mouth starring Kathryn Newton, so naturally he had to come on The Spiel talk a little bit about his Spielberg-y influences. Yes, Jaws does come up, of course, but the conversation mostly focuses on Spielberg's move into the executive arena when he, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen launched their very own movie studio and called it Dreamworks. What happens when a filmmaker is put in charge? Does that have an impact on their own films? With multiple Oscar winning films and giant blockbusters that have come out of the studio over the years, there's no question that the venture was a success, but it wasn't without its lows as well. THE DEVIL'S LEDGER Week of August 24, 2026 It is still freakin' August. This week on The Devil's Ledger, we surrender to the heat and turn our attention toward masked lunatics, black-eyed children, Victorian blackmail, spectacular fraud, and another trip into a supernatural dimension that desperately needs better lighting. We begin with The Creepiest Thing I Heard This Week: The Chucky Mask Spree. Philadelphia police say a masked man targeted at least half a dozen people during a bizarre early-morning spree, including a 40-year-old jogger whom he allegedly chased after asking whether she was ready to die. Surveillance cameras captured the suspect wearing a Chucky-style doll mask—and investigators noticed that beneath it he appeared to be wearing another black face covering. Fictional monsters are considerably less entertaining when someone decides to wear their face in the real world.

Send us a text by clicking this link!A book so controversial the author half jokes he may have to “press publish” live just to see how long it survives. We're joined again by Father James Mawdsley to talk about Know Thy Enemy, the personal cost of writing it, and why certain questions Catholics were told to stop asking keep forcing their way back into view.We dig into how propaganda and education build the “frame” that decides what you're allowed to notice. That takes us from post war narratives and Vatican era assumptions to today's arguments about interfaith language, “Abrahamic” messaging, and what the Gospel actually says about spiritual fatherhood and spiritual adoption. Along the way, we connect the dots between ideas that sound religious and ideas that quietly replace religion. From there we get into the culture side: Teilhard de Chardin, Fulton Sheen, and the lure of progress talk that treats borders, traditions, and inherited identity as problems to be dissolved. We also discuss evolution in Catholic schools as a faith breaking domino, and why a purely political “universal brotherhood” cannot do the job of the New Covenant. The back half turns practical and personal: what to do when online accusations become a distraction campaign, how to stay charitable without going soft on truth, and why Father's advice on mental health is blunt. He argues that regular confession, prayer, and real community often do more than therapy culture and pharmaceuticals for people trying to rebuild a stable interior life.If you want more long form Catholic conversation on Vatican II debates, interfaith dialogue, propaganda, national sovereignty, Catholic anthropology, and confession as therapy, hit subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find the show.Support the showGet 10% off an amazing Black Monk Rosary by going to https://www.blackmonkrosaries.com/?ref=AVOIDINGBABYLON and using code AVOIDINGBABYLON at checkout!Check out our sponsor, Nic Nac, at www.nicnac.com and use code "AB25%" for 25% off of your first order! Please subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKsxnv80ByFV4OGvt_kImjQ?sub_confirmation=1https://www.avoidingbabylon.comMerchandise: https://avoiding-babylon-shop.fourthwall.comLocals Community: https://avoidingbabylon.locals.comFull Premium/Locals Shows on Audio Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1987412/subscribeRSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rss

Mel's struggles began young, eventually pulling her into IV drug use, dangerous environments, arrests, and a lifestyle completely controlled by addiction. Becoming a mother gave her something worth fighting for, but even that wasn't enough to immediately stop the spiral. At her lowest, addiction had taken nearly everything from her, including her ability to be the mother she wanted to be. After years of arrests, criminal charges, and close calls, one moment finally changed the direction of her life. What happened next became the beginning of a completely different story. Today, Mel has rebuilt a life that once seemed impossible, finding recovery, reconnecting with her faith and family, and building a successful career in the legal world, ironically on the opposite side of a system she once knew all too well. Deadly Nightshade (Atropa Belladonna) is part of the Solanaceae family, which also contains peppers, aubergines, tomatoes and potatoes! This most famous of poisonous plants is also known as belladonna, banewort, deadly dwale, Devil's cherries, or death's herb. The deadly nature of belladonna was noted as far back as 1550 BC. It's not a particularly common plant in the wild, although it does prefer woodland. Yet it's not necessarily a plant you might rush out to grow. You might also be hard-pressed to use it for meaningful communication. According to Mrs Burke's Language of Flowers dictionary, nightshade meant 'truth'. In the same book, belladonna is listed with the meaning 'silence'. So how does this plant appear in folklore, besides its links to the Devil and witchcraft? Every time you elevate your life in some way, the problems do not go away. They change form. My mom used to say it to me when my son was small: little kids, little problems. Big kids, big problems. She was right. And the same thing is true in business, in health, in every arena where you are growing. In this episode I explore the concept of new level, new devil and why understanding it is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself from discouragement. When you are first building a health practice you focus on one thing. The longer you are in the arena the more you understand how everything is connected. You start wishing for the simplicity of being a beginner. And I want to offer you a reframe: that nostalgia for simpler problems is actually evidence of how far you have come. Want to keep going? The Enlightenment promised light—yet the shadows never left. In this episode of Cryptic Chronicles, we trace how demonology adapted to an age of laboratories, salons, and revolutions. Courts curtailed witch trials, scholars attacked “superstition,” and new sciences reframed possession as psychology—yet grimoires were recopied, secret societies experimented with ritual, and writers turned the Devil into symbol, satire, and sometimes… something more. This is the paradox of the 1700s: a century that tried to banish demons while giving them fresh shapes. Kyteler's Inn in Kilkenny is one of Ireland's most famous medieval pubs, but its reputation reaches far beyond food, music and old stone walls. At the centre of its story is Alice Kyteler, a wealthy fourteenth-century woman accused of witchcraft, poisoning and dealings with the Devil. While Alice escaped, others connected to her case paid a terrible price, and her name has remained tied to the inn ever since. But is Kyteler's Inn truly haunted, or has centuries of folklore transformed a complicated historical case into one of Ireland's most enduring supernatural legends? In this episode of True Hauntings, Anne and Renata explore the story of Alice Kyteler, the paranormal claims linked to the inn, reports of a mysterious woman in black, unexplained cold spots, shadowy photographs and the suggestion that Alice herself may still be present. We also examine where these haunting stories began, how they changed over time, and whether the evidence points to genuine paranormal activity, mistaken identity, atmospheric storytelling or a legend that has grown stronger with every retelling. Was Alice Kyteler really a witch, a victim of fear and politics, or something more complicated? She digs into the folklore behind the site, from Satan's midnight planning sessions to the eerie scientific explanations researchers have tried (and failed) to pin down. Then Kerri takes us into one of the most haunting true crime cases of the 1920s: the disappearance of nine-year-old Walter Collins from Los Angeles, and the "Changeling" scandal that followed when police tried to pass off an impostor child as him. Play Episode Listen Later Aug 17, 2026 16:46

The Devil's Ledger — Week of August 17, 2026 The universe put on one hell of a show this week. We begin with Spain's spectacular August 12 solar eclipse and humanity's long, occasionally unhinged relationship with watching the sun disappear. For The Creepiest Thing I Heard This Week, we travel from ancient Greece—where an eclipse could signal that the gods had essentially abandoned humanity—to Choctaw stories of a giant black squirrel attempting to devour the sun and Vietnamese legends of a celestial frog swallowing it whole. And apparently scientific literacy hasn't completely saved us. Modern eclipse superstitions warn of poisoned food, birthday curses and even the possibility that washing your hair during an eclipse could somehow affect your sanity. Three thousand years ago we feared an angry god had extinguished the sun. Today we're worried about the potato salad. Progress remains uneven. Then, across the Evio Universe this week: On The Devil Within, The New Monsters continues with The Backrooms, the internet-born nightmare built around the idea that reality itself has seams. Slip through the wrong one and you could find yourself trapped inside an apparently endless maze of yellow wallpaper, stained carpeting, fluorescent lights and empty rooms. What began as an unsettling image evolved into an enormous collaborative mythology of levels, entities, rules and stories—and ultimately escaped the internet into games, movies and mainstream popular culture. On Criminal Mischief, Carolyn Ossorio breaks down the extraordinary new developments surrounding Luigi Mangione. Following his federal guilty plea in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, attention now turns toward New York's pending murder case and an increasingly important question: double jeopardy. Federal and state governments are generally treated as separate sovereigns under federal constitutional law, while New York provides additional statutory protections against successive prosecutions. Carolyn examines what Mangione's plea means, what it doesn't mean, and why the next major battle may happen before another jury ever hears the case. On The Slippery, we meet Olga Rutterschmidt and Helen Golay, the elderly Los Angeles women whose apparent efforts to help unhoused men concealed an astonishing insurance scheme. Prosecutors established that the pair befriended vulnerable men, obtained numerous life-insurance policies on them and eventually murdered Paul Vados and Kenneth McDavid in staged hit-and-run incidents before collecting millions in insurance proceeds. The scheme began unraveling when one detective overheard another discussing a suspicious death and remembered an eerily similar case. The same two women appeared in both files. From there came insurance investigators, undercover operations and the slow dismantling of an extraordinary criminal enterprise. And This Week in Horror, we're talking Ice Cream Man, Eli Roth's gleefully deranged throwback to the excesses of 1980s horror: an idyllic summer town, a mysterious ice cream man and frozen treats capable of turning children into homicidal killers. It's bloody, ridiculous and precisely the sort of movie that understands sometimes the best horror premise begins by taking something completely innocent and ruining it forever. So keep looking toward the stars, enjoy these final weeks of summer, and we'll see you somewhere this week across the Evio Universe.
