Erythrocytopenia, leukocytopenia, leukopenia, osteopenia these are some of the terms you will come across in your Funeral Service Pathology class. I think it's a good idea to study the prefixes and suffixes of medical terms as they tend to repeat themselves. Here we see penia as in cytopenia, leukopenia. Penia was the Greek Goddess of Poverty. Her role was to teach humans to be productive and humble. To me the Penia sounds a lot like penny so it's an easy connection. Therefore, anything-penia is a deficiency in something. Here's an example Erythrocytopenia, Erythrocyte is a red blood cell add penia to that and you have a deficiency of red blood cells.

Abstract: Plasmodium vivax uses Duffy binding protein (PvDBP1) to bind to the Duffy Antigen-Chemokine Receptor (DARC) to invade human erythrocytes. Individuals who lack DARC expression (Duffy-negative) are thought to be resistance to P. vivax. In recent years, P. vivax malaria is becoming more prevalent in Africa with a portion of these cases detected in Duffy-negatives. Apart from DBP1, members of the reticulocyte binding protein (RBP) and tryptophan-rich antigen (TRAg) families may also play a role in erythrocyte invasion. While the transcriptomes of the Southeast Asian and South American P. vivax are well documented, the gene expression profile of P. vivax in Africa and more specifically the expression level of several erythrocyte binding gene candidates as compared to DBP1 are largely unknown. This paper characterized the first P. vivax transcriptome in Africa and compared with those from the Southeast Asian and South American isolates. The expression of 4,404 gene transcripts belong to 12 functional groups including 43 specific erythrocyte binding gene candidates were examined. Overall, there were 10-26% differences in the gene expression profile amongst the geographical isolates, with the Ethiopian and Cambodian P. vivax being most similar. Majority of the gene transcripts involved in protein transportation, housekeeping, and host interaction were highly transcribed in the Ethiopian P. vivax. Erythrocyte binding genes including PvRBP2a and PvRBP3 expressed six-fold higher than PvDBP1and 60-fold higher than PvEBP/DBP2. Other genes including PvRBP1a, PvMSP3.8, PvMSP3.9, PvTRAG2, PvTRAG14, and PvTRAG22 also showed relatively high expression. Differential expression was observed among geographical isolates, e.g., PvDBP1 and PvEBP/DBP2 were highly expressed in the Cambodian but not the Brazilian and Ethiopian isolates, whereas PvRBP2a and PvRBP2b showed higher expression in the Ethiopian and Cambodian than the Brazilian isolates. Compared to Pvs25, the standard biomarker for detecting female gametocytes, PvAP2-G (PVP01_1440800), GAP (PVP01_1403000), and Pvs47 (PVP01_1208000) were highly expressed across geographical samples. These findings provide an important baseline for future comparisons of P. vivax transcriptomes from Duffy-negative infections and highlight potential biomarkers for improved gametocyte detection. Supplements in the form of fish oil or krill oil are widely recommended and consumed, and come with claims of cardiovascular disease prevention, cognitive benefits, and anti-inflammatory properties. But is it really a good idea to get your omega-3s in a gel cap rather than from food? And do they really do everything the media would have you believe? Abstract: Infection with malarial parasites renders hosts more mosquito attractive than their uninfected, healthy, counterparts. One volatile organic compound, -pinene, is associated with Plasmodium spp. infection in multiple studies and is a known mosquito attractant. However, how malarial infection results in elevated levels of host-associated -pinene remains unclear. One study suggests that erythrocyte exposure to the malarial metabolite, (E)-4-hydroxy-3-methyl-but-2-enyl pyrophosphate (HMBPP), results in increased levels of -pinene. Here, we establish that endogenous levels of -pinene are present in human erythrocytes, that these levels vary widely by erythrocyte donor, and that -pinene levels are not altered by HMBPP treatment. He designed the apparatus to safely administer ether to the patients and also designed a mask to administer chloroform. After investigating her death and a couple of deaths that followed, he realized that chloroform had to be administered carefully and published his findings in a letter to The Lancet. Snow was a skeptic of the then-dominant miasma theory that stated that diseases such as cholera and bubonic plague were caused by pollution or a noxious form of "bad air". The germ theory of disease had not yet been developed, so Snow did not understand the mechanism by which the disease was transmitted. His observation of the evidence led him to discount the theory of foul air. He first published his theory in an 1849 essay, On the Mode of Communication of Cholera, followed by a more detailed treatise in 1855 incorporating the results of his investigation of the role of the water supply in the Soho epidemic of 1854. The party faced the ordeal of rowing back upriver on the Murray and Murrumbidgee, against the current, in the heat of an Australian summer. Their supplies ran out and, when they reached the site of Narrandera in April, they were unable to go any further. Sturt sent two men overland in search of supplies and they returned in time to save the party from starvation. But Sturt went blind for some months and never fully recovered his health. By the time they reached Sydney again, they had rowed and sailed nearly 2,900 kilometres of the river system. Sturt believed that it was his destiny to discover a great salt water lake, known as 'the inland sea', in the middle of Australia. At very least, he wanted to be the first explorer to plant his foot in 'the centre' of Australia. In August 1844, he set out with a party of 15 men, 200 sheep, six drays, and a boat to explore north-western New South Wales and to advance into central Australia. They travelled along the Murray and Darling rivers before passing the future site of Broken Hill. They were stranded for months by the extreme summer conditions near the present site of Milparinka. When the rains eventually came, Sturt moved north and established a depot at Fort Grey (today this site is within Sturt National Park). With a small group of men, including explorer John McDouall Stuart as his draughtsman, Sturt pressed on across what is now known as Sturt's Stony Desert and into the Simpson Desert. Unable to go further, he turned back to the depot. Sturt made a second attempt to reach the centre of Australia, but he developed scurvy in the extreme conditions. His health broke down and he was forced to abandon the attempt. John Harris Browne, surgeon on the expedition, assisted Sturt, took over leadership of the party and, after travelling a total of 3,000 miles (4,800 km), brought it back to safety. He was a Professor of Zoology at the University of Florida. In 1987 he was awarded the Eminent Ecologist Award by the Ecological Society of America. He made extraordinary contribution to sea turtle conservation by way of bringing attention to the world's declining turtle populations due to over-exploitation and loss of safe habitat. He started out as a high school science teacher before becoming a college professor. He published numerous books and articles, including Ulendo: Travels of a Naturalist in and out of Africa, High Jungles and Low, So Excellent a Fishe (about his green turtles), The Windward Road and several Time-Life books such as The Everglades and The Reptiles. He was also the author of the Handbook of Turtles, and with Coleman J. Goin, Guide to the Reptiles, Amphibians and Freshwater Fishes of Florida. While a serious scientific and nature writer, he also had a remarkable sense of humor, which led him to publish the parody of scientific taxonomic keys - his A Subjective Key to the Fishes of Alachua County, Florida, affectionately known as the "Carr Key". Carr was also known for his efforts in conservation, especially for sea turtles, helping convince Costa Rica to establish Tortuguero National Park in 1975. He was a co-founder of the Caribbean Conservation Corporation, which helps to save and monitor sea turtles in Tortuguero,Costa Rica. He was often joined in his conservation work by his wife Marjorie Carr, who was a major advocate for conservation in her own right. In 1952 Carr was awarded the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal from the National Academy of Sciences. Show notes By Emily Bryer, DO, resident in the department of internal medicine, University of Pennsylvania Hemoglobin is associated with quality of life and functional status, and quality of life improves continuously as hemoglobin rises from low (8 g/dL) to normal (12 g/dL) levels. The complete workup of anemia involves reticulocyte count, iron studies, folate, B12, peripheral smear, and creatinine. Anemia is a consequence of 1) cancer and 2) chemotherapy In patients with malignancy, the inflammatory state results in iron-restricted erythropoiesis, so patients may be functionally iron deficient even if their iron stores are replete. How do we treat anemia in cancer? Blood transfusion to rapidly improve hemoglobin Intravenous iron, if iron deficient Erythrocyte stimulating agents (ESA), if iron stores are replete. (Although IV iron augments ESA response in all cancer studies reported so far.) Risks associated with blood transfusion: Infection, transfusion-related-lung-injury, reactions to mismatched or well-matched blood, and iron overload (specifically in myelodysplastic syndrome). Recent FDA-mandated studies in anemic metastatic breast and non-small-cell lung cancer patients have demonstrated that there is no difference in survival among patients who receive ESA or placebo to treat their cancer/chemotherapy-associated anemia. HIF-1-alpha (hypoxia-inducible-factor) is a transcription factor produced in response to hypoxia. Background: The erythrocyte binding antigen 175 (EBA-175) is a 175 kDa antigen of Plasmodium falciparum and plays a major role in erythrocyte recognition by the parasite. The antigen is also supposed to be partly responsible for the invasion of erythrocytes by merozoites. EBA-175 has been sequenced from the FCR-3 and CAMP strains of P. falciparum. The sequences were identical in most parts of the gene. Differences were apparent in a 423 bp segment in the FCR-3 strain, the F-Fragment, that is not found in the CAMP-strain and a 342 bp segment, the C-Fragment, which is present in the CAMP-strain but not in the FCR-3-strain. The aim of this study was to assess the distribution of the two EBA-175-alleles in the Lao PDR. Materials & Methods: Altogether, 240 blood-samples were collected in two areas of the country: Attapeu in the south and Lung Namtha in the north. Subsequently, the material was scanned for the F- and C-fragments. Results: In the whole study population, 52% carried the F- fragment, and 41% the C-fragment while seven percent of the patients were infected with at least two parasite strains and showed both alleles. Conclusion: Distribution of the alleles showed significant differences between the north and the south province. Reasons for this include possible importation of different parasite strains from neighbouring countries.
Inflammatory reactions are associated with sequestration of leukocytes in the lung. Complement activation leads to accumulation of leukocytes in alveolar septa and alveoli, to lung edema and hemorrhage. Although in organs other than the lung leukocytes interact with the vascular endothelium only in postcapillary venules, alveolar capillaries are considered to be the site of leukocyte sequestration in the lung. However, pulmonary venules and arterioles have not been investigated systematically after complement activation so far, A closed thoracic window was implanted in anesthetized rabbits; leukocytes and red blood cells were stained, and the movement of these cells was measured in superficial pulmonary arterioles, venules and alveolar capillaries using fluorescence video microscopy before and 30 and 60 min after infusion of cobra venom factor (CVF). Erythrocyte velocity and macrohemodynamic conditions did not change after CVF infusion and were not different from the sham-treated controls. The number of sticking leukocytes increased significantly compared to baseline and control: by 150% in arterioles and in venules and by 740% in alveolar capillaries within 60 min after CVF infusion. The width of alveolar septa in vivo was significantly enlarged after CVF infusion, indicating interstitial pulmonary edema. At the end of the experiments, myeloperoxidase activity was higher in the CVF group, showing leukocyte sequestration in the whole organ. It is concluded that complement activation by CVF induces leukocyte sequestration in lung arterioles, venules and alveolar capillaries and leads to mild lung injury.
