Donald Trump's top counterterrorism official has quit over the war in Iran. He says pressure from Israel, not an imminent threat from Iran, led the US president to start the conflict.Today, Hussein Ibish from the Arab Gulf States Institute on Benjamin Netanyahu's goals in Iran and how long he wants the fight to last. He explains why, if regime change isn't possible, Israel might keep going until the Iranian state fails. Featured: Hussein Ibish, senior resident scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute
Ben Rhodes served as deputy national security adviser in Barack Obama's White House for eight years. He was working with President Obama as Benjamin Netanyahu continued to pressure the US, time and time again, to attack Iran. Obama, says Rhodes, resisted the Israeli prime minister's pressure campaign, but now under President Donald Trump's second term, it's clear that "Netanyahu essentially bullied him [Trump] into this war." In this wide-ranging interview, Mehdi and Rhodes discuss Israel's role in provoking this war with Iran, the Democratic Party leadership's weak response to the conflict, and the events that led up to this disaster during the Obama and Biden presidencies. I recently saw two movies that exemplified how I want to make political art: Neo Sora's "Happyend" and "Failed State" by Christopher Jason Bell and Mitch Blummer. Both films tell intimate stories that show rather than obscure the ways political systems influence their characters' lives. In this episode of This Is Your Afterlife, I'm grateful to talk to "Failed State" co-director Chris Bell about his approach to making political work and what makes him the artist and person he is.

A calm and clear conversation with Sagar, senior staff writer at The Caravan. We speak about why Bihar is more than a broken state, how caste politics really works on the ground, and how election season gets distorted by the memification of leaders who should not be elevated in the first place. He explains the gap between lived reality and the stories told by mainstream media, the truth behind the jungle raj label, and why Bihar has been misread for so long. This is our first conversation with independent filmmaker Christopher Jason Bell. We with him again about the feature length release, Failed State, which he co-directed. Miss Me Yet is a chronicle of the George W. Bush presidency, which means that it also documents the early days of the War on Terror, beginning with 9/11. Chris draws us back into the early 2000s by painstakingly splicing together archival footage of Bush interspersed with commercials that amplify the cultural moments. It seems appropriate to rerelease this episode, not just because it's the 200th anniversary of 9/11 (or whatever), but because the seeds of so much we've grown to live with and so much of what we've become numb to were planted in those years. Trump used an Iraq War era Congressional authorization for the legal pretext to assassinate Qasem Soleimani in 2020. Of course, as we've seen many times recently, we've moved well past the need for annoying legal authorizations. Arguably though, we might not have become so inured to extrajudicial violence if we weren't first used to Congress rubber stamping it. Congress' approval was never even requested for the recent US attacks on nuclear sites in Iran. From the original episode description: In this episode, we talk with filmmaker Christopher Bell about his docuseries Miss Me Yet. Chris brings the horror and absurdity of the George W. Bush years back to life as he tells the story of a political heir who becomes president, is branded a liar and war criminal by many, and finally drifts into the semi-reclusive painterly life. Filmmaker Christopher Jason Bell (Miss Me Yet, Attention Shoppers) joins us to discuss Last Action Hero, a meta action comedy featuring too many ideas, a healthy serving of great jokes, and a fascinating reckoning for its star Arnold Schwarzenegger as he was aging into the second act of his movie star career. We begin with a conversation about the action hero vehicle, its dominance in the 1980s, and its turn to self-reference and parody in the early 1990s. Then, we explore Last Action Hero's bizarre combination of action movie tropes and lighter cartoon comedy logic that makes its satirical targets more difficult to identify. After, we address the ways the film incidentally exonerates itself from some of the more ideologically thorny tendencies of police films by embracing fantasy and drawing attention to its artifice. Finally, we spend some time discussing Chris's latest brilliant and beautiful film Failed State, how its component parts all came together, and what it means to be a filmmaker in our moment of constant crises and social alienation.Follow Christopher Jason Bell on TwitterWatch Chris's films on Means.tv Watch the trailer for Failed StateGet access to all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

In Episode 433 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Sam Freedman, a former senior policy advisor in the UK's Department for Education, political analyst, and the author of "Failed State," a timely exploration of the deep-rooted dysfunction within British governance and how to fix it. In their conversation, Sam Freedman examines the origins and nature of the current crisis, focusing on issues such as extreme centralization, the dominance of executive power, and the corrosive impact of modern media dynamics on politics and policymaking. He also takes listeners through several critical turning points in recent British political history, explaining how the solutions to past crises have, paradoxically, laid the groundwork for today's dysfunction. The episode ends with an exploration of Sam's proposed radical institutional reforms, why incremental solutions are insufficient, and how these issues compare to those facing the United States and other western democracies. The two discuss decentralization, the strengthening of parliamentary scrutiny, civil service reform, and the complex interplay between governance, media influence, and public trust in political institutions. Liz Truss, former prime minister of the United Kingdom, says she wants to be part of the “second American revolution” — “Trump-style.” With “Britian heading for bankruptcy,” “grooming gangs,” unchecked immigration, and the rising threat of Islamism, is it too late to Make Europe Great Again? Despite an unhinged deep state and free-speech crackdowns, Liz Truss still has hope, which is why she is working on a new media venture to rival the BBC. She exposes how the Bank of England “turned on her” and then marvels at the incompetence of Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney before offering a chilling warning: “If we do not turn this around within 10 years, the West is finished.” GLENN'S SPONSORS Relief Factor Relief Factor can help you live pain-free! Why do some nations thrive while others collapse? Tolstoy's famous quote applies to economies—successful nations share key traits, while failed states unravel in distinctive ways. From corruption and weak institutions to war and economic mismanagement, history reveals clear patterns of failure. This video examines why countries like Barbados, the Congo, and Yemen have struggled, while South Korea has transformed into a global powerhouse.
