Barry and Phil are joined by Holden Bale, the Global Head of Experience and Commerce at Merkle, for a drink and a chat about where digital experiences are heading in the (not too distant) future. In this far-reaching and engaging conversation, we discuss the Four Forces that are impacting Experience today, and the ways they are making companies fundamentally shift their channel strategies. We also discuss how 'the collapse of the funnel', once a punchline at conferences and lectures, is now a stark truth for both CTO's and CMO's, requiring enterprises to be able to draw a straight line from their business strategy to their technology strategy. The invention of the spinning jenny in 1764 upended the textile industry—and the women who earned a living weaving cotton and preparing fabrics in their homes. Suddenly, these jobs became obsolete. Just as the industrial revolution had a profound impact on how people worked and lived, structural forces are transforming global labor markets today, from slowing globalization to the advent of generative AI. The evolution of labor markets is poised to reshape the macro landscape in the years to come, posing broad implications across the investment portfolio. In this episode of PGIM's The OUTThinking Investor, we talk to three experts about the transformation of labor markets, the economic impact, and how investors can identify leaders and laggards as the world embarks on a new era of work. Our guests are Greg Wright, an associate professor of economics at the University of California at Merced and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution; Zeynep Ton, a professor at MIT Sloan and author of the book The Case for Good Jobs: How Great Companies Bring Dignity, Pay and Meaning to Everyone's Work; and Jakob Wilhelmus, Director of Thematic Research at PGIM. At the center of Sovereign Man's core ethos is the indisputable view that the United States is in decline. I take absolutely zero pleasure in writing that statement. But it's incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to objectively appraise the bountiful evidence at hand and not reach the same conclusion. Consider the following: US government finances are appallingly bad. The national debt exceeds 100% of GDP, annual deficits run into the trillions of dollars with no end in sight, and major trust funds for Social Security and Medicare will soon run out of money. Political incompetence is mind-blowing; politicians fail to be able to even identify problems, let alone understand them, let alone reach compromises to solve them. Ditto for central bank incompetence. These people simply cannot understand how, by keeping interest rates at zero for nearly a decade and conjuring trillions of dollars out of thin air, they engineered record high inflation. And they also fail to understand how their actions to ‘fix' inflation are causing widespread havoc in the economy and financial system. Social divisions across the country are extreme. Censorship and cancel culture prevail, and corporations now wag their fingers at their own customers to “be better”. The education system is in pitiful shape, with many politicians and school board officials turning classrooms into activist training camps. The population is terribly unhealthy. Obesity and drug addiction are epidemics. Plus there's an obvious mental health crisis that drives far too many people to commit horrific acts of violence on innocent people, including children. National security is in decline. Military readiness is down, yet top officials seem more concerned about diversity and inclusion rather than the ability to prevail in war. The rule of law has been perverted, including for political purposes and self-aggrandizement. We just saw another example of this yesterday. Even the national fertility rate continues plummeting-- an indication of the rising cost of living and social apathy. The Wall Street Journal recently published a series of polls indicating that most Americans doubt their children will have a better future; pessimism is strong. They also found that certain values which once defined American culture, including a sense of community, hard work, and civility, are no longer important to the majority of people. This is all happening at a time when adversaries are circling. And that includes China. Now, usually whenever I bring up China, there are always people who are quick to assert that China cannot possibly replace the US as the dominant superpower because they have just as many problems. And it's true that China has a ton of problems. They have their own debt issues, financial system chaos, and economic problems. They have social challenges, a major demographic crisis, and even a serious issue with childhood obesity. But no civilization or empire throughout history has ever been problem-free. Ancient Rome, even during its early republic days, had enormous problems. They had to deal with constant revolts, civil war, the genocidal dictatorship of Sulla, famine, war, plague, and more. Yet there's an enormous difference between taking on challenges while you're on the rise… versus succumbing to them while on the way down. Rome was able to deal with its challenges and continue its rise to become the dominant superpower. China may be able to do the same. The US finds itself in a precarious position where they have a mountain of compounding problems… and no ability to even slow them down, let alone solve them. I've written before about what I call the “Four Forces of Decline”, which I define as 1) Forces of History-- the inevitable, cyclical nature in the rise and fall of Empire. No empire, no civilization in human history has ever retained the top spot forever, and most tend to experience similar challenges on the way down.

#137 The Four Forces of Growth: What CEO's need to focus on to sustain growth

The Growth Whisperers podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 21, 2022 24:42

This week we're talking about a new book that Kevin is working on entitled The Four Forces of Growth. We talk about the four forces, why they matter and what you can do to focus on growth. Here's an excerpt from Kevin's website outlining the four forces of growth. The 4 Forces of Growth We're about a third of the way through this year, and it feels as if we've already burned a year's worth of energy. Many people have slipped into troubleshooting, problem solving and pivoting within their businesses and I've seen some amazing ways that teams have rallied to change, improve and come out stronger and more unified. It's incredibly impressive. So, now that we've made it through this initial storm, the key is to make sure that we become masters of prioritizing and focusing on what matters most. Unfortunately, when things become more chaotic – as they likely will be for a while – and there are many different perspectives and opinions, people often put their energy where their logic tells them. And they won't find out, until a few months down the road, that it might not have been the best choice. That's when the difference between strategic thinkers and amazing executers start to show up. Some people, for whatever reason, are better at figuring out the higher impact places to put their energy, and what to leave alone. Whether this is you, or not, the key is to have the right tools to help you and your team pick what matters the most – and to ensure you don't get distracted and deluded by logical thought in an illogical time. Defying Logic From the beginning of recorded history, there have been people who pursued ideas and actions that defied logic. Like Leonardo Da Vinci who conceived a flying machine well before the Wright brothers took to the sky, or scientists in the 1700s who began to think that disease was caused by micro-organisms rather than bad blood or bad air. These unique people were drawn to hard, risky pursuits that contained very little instant gratification and, in many cases, sustained struggle and sacrifice. They were motivated and inspired by the impact of their pursuits and had the courage to push ahead – even when the logic of the day told them otherwise. Last August, I started work on a new book about this topic and, little did I realize that it would become incredibly important six months later. The premise of the book is to find a simple way to help people to evaluate their decisions – to truly understand if their priorities really help or hinder their growth. I'm fascinated by people who do the unthinkable and continue to defy logic, to persevere and succeed. After much research, I chose the analogy of flight and the pilots who defy gravity for extended periods of time. CEOs and pilots are very similar, both from a leadership perspective and they ways they make amazing things happen. The 4 Forces of Growth In an airplane, pilots have to pay attention to the principles of flight – Lift, Thrust, Weight and Drag: Lift is created by the wings and contrasted by the weight of the plane and gravity. When you get lift and thrust you get altitude The thrust of the engines pushing the plane forward is fought by drag, the resistance of air. Pilots – just like a CEO – must pay attention to these principles or they'll quickly succumb to the forces of gravity. Here's how this relates to the world of a CEO and leader: Lift happens when leaders lift their heads to look at opportunities – the future possibilities that help the business to get to a higher altitude of more revenue, more customers, more profit Weight are the problems we get sucked into Thrust is the courage to push ahead, make decisions and get into action Drag is fear and doubt as we spend too much time contemplating, delay decisions and are less likely to act boldly. Opportunities and Problems, Fear and Courage are the 4 Forces of Growth that shape and define four states we can find ourselves in, at any given time: Agony, Analysis, Growth and Improvement. Growth is the result of courage and opportunity: increased revenue, new customers, new products, new services, new markets. It's solving a problem for somebody new or solving a new problem for someone you already work with. It's not about doing what you already do today – it's about expanding in some way. Growth is the accountability of CEOs who should be spending most of their thinking and action time in that box. And if the CEO is not, it's very difficult for the company to grow. Improvement is when you have the courage to move ahead but your energy is focused on solving problems. While improvement is good, it won't grow a business on its own. It can make customers happier, improve margins and costs, and streamline operations. It's wonderful and equally dangerous. This box is normally owned by the COO who needs to be focused on making things better. The challenge here is understanding the problems that need to be solved and the problems that need to be ignored. Knowing how to make the decision on which problem to focus, or not, is the value of an amazing CEO or COO. (We'll talk more about this, in future.) You could stay in this box all day long and that's the risk because problems never go away. In many companies we work with, that are really focused on growth, we leave a couple of percent in the expense structure of the business for problems that we continue to pay for, so that we can reallocate more energy into growth. These are strategic decisions that generally only a good CEO can make – to not solve problems and to not optimize all their costs so that they can grow healthily and quickly. Analysis is on the other side of courage. This is where you look at opportunities but you're fearful or hesitant to make a decision. This box is generally mastered by the CFO – the yin to the CEOs yang – who challenges and throws reality and practicality at some of the CEOs strategy thinking. That's why the CEO or CFO pairing is so critical. A certain amount of analysis is very good. We need it but, at a certain point, we also need to make a decision, a test or a move, so only being an analysis obviously isn't good. The question is how much do we need? Depending on the CEO, this can vary. If you have a very growth-oriented, visionary CEO more analysis is often needed for balance. And a fairly analytical CEO might not lead as much on the CFO for additional analysis. Agony happens when you're a fearful victim, stuck in problems, and indecisive. This is analysis paralysis – a very painful place where problems become overwhelming and you can't find your way out. This is possibly the most dangerous state of all because it can degrade the mental health of individuals, of teams and, in a worst-case scenario, the entire company. To move across the line into improvement, you need to find – or borrow or rent – the courage to do something. Generally, audit/legal/compliance own this box, and they need to look at problems, in order to keep us from getting into trouble. While we need to be compliant, and aware of the problems that can really hurt us, we also need to make decisions and move ahead. You don't grow a business here. A Matter of Time As you look at this model, where is your time spent? Some CEOs would say they want to be 80% growth, 9% analysis, 9% improvement and 2% agony. And others – depending on the state of their business and the strength of their team – might be 40% growth, 10% analysis, 40% improvement and 10% agony. While there's no right answer here, the key is being conscious of where you and your team actually spend your time, and to make sure your focus is in the right place. The reality is that you just can't expect to have a company that grows 30% per year, year on year, if the CEO spends 10% of their time in the growth box. Red Flags When we do strategic planning sessions with companies, we always try to make sure there's enough energy allocated to the Growth box for the company to reach its goals. And, obviously, we're always analyzing and improving things, in the business, so that it gets stronger as it gets bigger. A red flag is when the CEO of a growing company spends too much time administering or analyzing their business, versus doing the things that create growth. Sometimes these are easy distractions that may create a lot of noise and seem important, but they aren't the best use of your time.   From Kevin's blog https://lawrenceandco.com/resources/4-forces-of-growth   ----- * Do you love The Growth Whisperers and want to see our smiling faces? This week, Lindsey Hall joins The GenZ Show to help emerging generations find the answers to getting tired of being in the same place they have always been? Or being tired of waking up, dreading what the day will bring? Lindsey uses the four forces of flight to illustrate the "Four Forces of Life." Short episode summary Shakira said it best – the hips don't lie! In this episode of the RunRX Podcast, Coach Valerie and Coach Caroline discuss running tips focusing on the strength needed for running, especially in the hips.   Timestamps of big takeaways   Running Tips [1:05] Coach Valerie read in an article that people who get a running injury sometimes go to a sports doctor, who tells them that their glutes aren't firing properly. Coach Valerie has heard of this problem ever since she started in the industry.   [1:58] When it comes to running, all muscles are important, and you must also understand what strength is.   All About Strength [2:55] Coach Valerie enjoys reading articles about strength. She read an article about the importance of hip strength when running. According to the article, your hip muscles' ability to generate force should be improved.   [4:18] Hip strength helps in stabilizing your body. Once you touch down on the ground, your body will be able to balance itself, and you will be able to fall forward and pull your foot from the ground.   [5:04] According to the article Coach Valerie read, maximum hip extension occurs when you toe-off and push back off the ground. It also states that as the running speed increases, so does the force, resulting in greater movement.   Four Forces in Running [5:51] There are four forces at work in running: gravity, ground reaction force, muscle elasticity, and active muscle contraction. Gravity naturally exists in the environment, and ground reaction force happens when you touch the ground. Everyone has muscle elasticity, whether we use it or not.   Key Strengths on Running [8:33] Coach Valerie suggests exercises like Glute Bridges, Single Leg Glute Bridges, Step-Ups, and Squats to strengthen your glutes.   [9:15] When the hips are hurting when running, this is most likely because you push or reach. An incorrect movement while running causes extra tension on the hip. To solve it, you must have strength training.   [9:50] Aside from strength training, you must also correct your movement when running. Stretching and strengthening the hips are useless if don't fix your movement.   [11:08] The same can be said when the calf hurts while running. You must strengthen the glute and the calf, but you must also determine what is causing the problem.   Understanding How You Run [15:10] Most people think that simply strengthening the glutes can help in running. However, you must first understand why you need the strength in your run. This is for you to develop a relationship with your hip to understand your actions and running.   [16:26] If you train, you'll understand how your strengths work. You'll be able to understand what you're doing in your run.   Final Reminders [17:47] When it comes to running, all you need is strength training to keep your hips stable and your feet strong enough to support you throughout your run. Understanding how you run will help you decide what's right and wrong when running, and you'll be able to feel and recognize when you've done something incorrectly.   Rate, Review & Subscribe Reminder Don't forget to like and subscribe to our show. Ep. 48 - The Secret to Disrupting Human Performance - with Steven Kotler

The Impact Entrepreneur

This week we're kicking off the disruption series. We're going to discover how incredible people disrupt their lives, their industries, and the world to create a powerful impact.   Today's guest, Steven Kotler, is a New York Times bestselling author, an award-winning journalist, and the Co-Founder / Director of Research for the Flow Genome Project.   He is one of the world's leading experts on ultimate human performance and he has spent his entire career exploring how people do the impossible.   Rise of Superman is about how action and adventure sports athletes reinvent kinesthetic possibility.   Abundance and Bold are about the entrepreneurs who have built the fastest and largest companies in the shortest amount of time.   Small Furry Prayer is about the cutting edge of empathy and altruism. Stealing Fire (Steven's newest book) is about a $4 trillion underground movement to harness alternate states of consciousness to massively uplevel performance.     Through years of research, Steven has discovered that the secret to disrupting human performance is the same across the board: altered states of consciousness. This includes flow states, meditative states, psychedelic states, and more.   “One of the most well-established facts in the whole history of psychology is that altered states are incredibly good for us, and it's not common knowledge.”   If you're not familiar, altered states of consciousness can be defined as a specific bandwidth of non-ordinary states of consciousness where... our normal sense of self vanishes our normal sense of time disappears we are freed from the drudgery of daily life we get a sense of effortless motivation and we can tap into a level of inspiration information that is normally unavailable.   In Stealing Fire, Steven uses the Greek term ecstasis to refer to this phenomenon and bypass the negative stigma placed upon altered states of consciousness. He also discusses the four forces accelerating this movement towards the upper possibility space of human experience, which he calls the Four Forces for Ecstasy: Psychology Neurobiology Pharmacology Technology   Altered states of consciousness aren't just for team building at Burning Man. They can be directly applied to your life and workspace. After rolling out mindfulness training at Aetna, they gained $3,000 per employee in productivity and saved $2,000 per employee in healthcare costs. At Patagonia, the Founder has a “let my people go surfing” policy to encourage flow. Standing in a power pose for a few minutes can change your physiology and empower you. We get more flow any time the challenge at hand slightly exceeds our skillset. Physical, emotional, psychological, and social risk can all focus our attention.   We are all created with the potential to do more than we could possibly ask for or possibly imagine. Steven's research is a gift that will help us take a few steps towards disrupting what is possible. If you're interested in exploring the fringes of human possibility, you can't do better than Steven's books.   These are a few of my favorites… BOLD – This book challenged me to have a bigger vision for my life and the impact I'm capable of having. I still don't believe I am thinking boldly enough. Abundance – Beyond loving the word, this book woke me up to the fact that NOW is the best time in human history to create and innovate amazing solutions to today's problems and tomorrow's challenges. Contrary to past experience or what one may have been led to believe, the resources are abundantly available. Rise of Superman – We all have the ability to perform at super optimized levels. We refer to it as being "in the zone." God created us with an amazing organ - the brain - and if we put ourselves in the right environment it is amazing what each of us is capable of doing. --   Don't be a podcast junkie… Resources: Pre-Order...
