Dr. John Marcotte and I go back to 1995 together, and we have worked with and consulted with each other on a lot of horses over those years. Most of the x-rays that appear in my textbook are taken by Dr. John. He has spent a lifetime helping horses and their owners, and found time to become a helicopter pilot in the mix somehow. He has survived a helicopter crash and over 30 years in a super busy Equine Veterinarian practice in Vinita, Oklahoma. With the current Equine Herpes Virus, EHV, going on, I thought this would be the perfect time to sit down with my old friend and have a conversation that you are all invited to. We are cleared for takeoff.

“Can you really be thankful when your heart is breaking?”In this powerful Thanksgiving episode of Female Voices: Life & Loss, Teresa and LaWayna open up about navigating grief during the holidays and how gratitude can coexist with pain. From personal stories of loss to a helicopter ride filled with fear and prayer, they share authentic perspectives on reframing, community, and starting small gratitude practices that help bring calm to an overwhelmed mind.Whether you're grieving someone you love, struggling financially, or just feeling disconnected heading into the holidays—this conversation will remind you that you're not alone, and you can hold grief and grace at the same time.Quotes worth remembering● “You can absolutely have gratitude and be grieving at the same time—we are complicated human beings.” – LaWayna ● “Sometimes instead of asking ‘What am I grateful for?' ask ‘What do I have?'” – Teresa● “When we slow down and breathe, even for two minutes, the body begins to restore.” – Teresa● “I told the Lord, help your little sad child today.” – LaWayna ● “Maybe start with the ungrateful list before the grateful one.” – LaWayna Topics Covered● Navigating grief during the holiday season● How gratitude affects our brain chemistry and cortisol levels● Different gratitude practices (journaling, prayer, spoken word, connection)● The power of community in healing (AA, friendships, families)● Reframing and slowing down to be present● Adventuring outside comfort zones as an act of livingKey Takeaways● You can hold both grief and gratitude at the same time. Healing doesn't require pretending you're okay.● Starting small helps: Even a 2-minute breathing or gratitude moment can help reduce stress.● There is no one right way to practice gratitude. Journaling, prayer, speaking, community—find what works for you.● Reframing can shift mental state. Sometimes “What do I have?” is easier than “What am I grateful for?”● Getting emotions out (even the negative ones) may help. Ex-FBI sniper Christopher Whitcomb survived warlords, black ops, and helicopter crashes. He's here to explain how calculating risk kept him alive. [Pt. 1/2]Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1242What We Discuss with Christopher Whitcomb:Risk calculation becomes second nature in high-stakes environments. Christopher Whitcomb describes constant mental math in life-threatening situations, assessing odds, escape routes, and survival probabilities while meeting warlords or navigating hostile territories. The psychological toll of extreme operations is cumulative and often invisible. Years of black ops, moral ambiguity, and life-threatening missions create layers of trauma that don't announce themselves until something breaks, making the "finding himself again" journey essential.Helicopters are surprisingly resilient war machines. Contrary to Hollywood's explosive fantasies, Vietnam proved these birds can take serious damage and stay airborne. When power does fail, auto-rotation uses blade inertia to control descent, turning disaster into survivable physics.Adrenaline addiction isn't about having too much adrenaline. Christopher Whitcomb explains he wasn't addicted because he didn't have it; his body adapted to extreme situations by no longer producing the chemical response most people experience, revealing how repeated exposure rewires our biology.Understanding the physics of consequence helps you push boundaries without crossing them. Whether rock climbing, tactical operations, or any high-risk endeavor, calculating limits lets you explore your edge safely. The Newport Fishermen’s Wives, a nonprofit organization focusing on building community and improving safety in the local fishing industry, faced a long legal battle in 2013 to ensure Newport’s Coast Guard helicopter would stay in the coastal town. Recently, the helicopter was removed from Newport and relocated to North Bend, with no public warning or preliminary risk assessments.  Its relocation is linked to the rumors of a possible new ICE facility in the coastal town, along with job postings for ICE detention officers in Newport and a federal contractor looking to lease space at the Newport Municipal Airport. At a city council meeting last Wednesday, residents raised concerns about the possible ICE facility and raised alarm about the safety of fishermen prior to crabbing season on the Oregon coast. Taunette Dixon of the Newport Fishermen’s Wives joins us to discuss the helicopter’s removal.

On this episode I chatted with the legend Jim Gardner. With more than 14,000 flight hours across legendary helicopters like the Bell 206, 407, 505, and the Airbus A-Star, Jim Gardner has spent 40 years mastering the skies. From live police pursuits to storm tracking and Hollywood film sets, Jim built a career on precision flying, calm under pressure, and an unwavering commitment to truth and safety. He began his aviation journey in Los Angeles in 1985, ultimately becoming the chief pilot for KCAL Channel 9. There, he flew through the heart of breaking news history—covering the O.J. Simpson chase and trial, the L.A. riots, devastating earthquakes, and fast-moving wildfires that tested every skill in the cockpit. In 1996, Jim returned home to Oklahoma, where his legacy took flight once again. He joined KFOR Channel 4 as pilot and airborne reporter, later moving to KWTV Channel 9, where he remained until retiring in 2025. His aerial coverage became an iconic part of Oklahoma broadcasting, earning the trust of viewers and the respect of professionals across the nation. www.pilotjimgardner.com  Huge thank you to our sponsors. Text a Message to the ShowIn the summer of 2025 my hometown of Kansas City, Kansas, lost two officers murdered in the line of duty: Deputy Elijah Ming and Officer Hunter Simoncic.  Because they were killed just 30 days apart, we had two large, complex, line of duty death funerals at the local major league soccer stadium, one funeral just a few weeks after the other.  We are still grieving and trying to process these losses, and as part of that process I wanted to offer our experiences as a resource to other agencies. The guest for this interview Captain Shenee Davis-Kross from the police department.  She was involved in the logistics and planning for both funerals, starting with the motorcycle escorts for the fallen and extending to an almost endless list of other responsibilities in the Op Plan.  Though Captain Davis was just one part of a much larger team, I felt she represented the group's experience really well and I think you'll learn a lot from what she went through.Music is by the WesterliesHey Chaplain Podcast Episode 126Tags:Line of Duty Death, Ceremonies, Family, Funeral, Helicopters, Liaisons, Logistics, Motorcycles, Murder, Police, Sheriff, Snipers, Sporting KC, SWAT, Taps, Kansas City, KansasSupport the showThanks for Listening!
