In this episode, I sit down with Kai Cox in her beautiful healing space, the home of her business, Awaken Innate Healing. Kai Cox is a fourth-generation healer. She became a licensed massage therapist in 2011 and has been working to help people heal through a variety of modalities such as Lomi Lomi, Bio-Touch and Vibration healing ever since. But Kai has other gifts as well. Since Kai was a child, she has been able to see spirits and energies and has honed her intuition to be able to communicate with them to help people heal on a spiritual and mental level. Kai uses these gifts to help people heal with intuitive readings and channelings. Kai and I were originally supposed to connect over a year ago, but through a series of events that we talk about in this episode, we were postponed for many months. But this was a reminder for me in the power of divine timing. My conversation with Kai was a lesson for me in intuition, embracing the mystery of our existence, and a beautiful reminder to follow your excitement and enjoy life. I hope you enjoy her infectious positive energy and amazing spirit. I strongly encourage you to connect with Kai, and especially if you're in the Chicago area, make your way to her wonderful healing sanctuary and experience her gifts. --------If you enjoy stories of personal transformation and spiritual awakening, check out Spiritual Wayfinders: The Audio Documentary. Taken from the secret science behind miracles, Max Freedom Long discusses Lomilomi or the laying on of hands as it is practiced in the Hawaiian Huna tradition. Much can be learned from this ancient practice. In Hawaii and throughout Polynesia at a very early date, according to the semi-historical legends of the South seas, the healers often made use of physical manipulation as an aid to what might be called "mental" healing. This manipulation was called lomilomi, and was a combination of massage, bathing and deep manipulation—every action being accompanied by an action of mind to aid healing and relieve pain. If we modern people would combine Swedish massage, the various baths, chiropractic, osteopathy, the use of suggestion, and the ancient religious practice of "the laying on of hands" (to heal), we should approach the scope of lomilomi as a skilled kahuna might practice it.
MagaMama with Kimberly Ann Johnson: Sex, Birth and Motherhood
Summary In this episode, Kimberly and Khadija reflect on their recent mutual aid efforts in the wake of fires in Maui. Khadija shares what she has witnessed in her community and the tremendous impact of donations that have directly reached her neighbors. They reflect on destination travel and the impact of tourism on both the land and the people of Hawaii. Khadija describes what led her to invite Kimberly and Stephen Jenkinson to Reckon on the island this coming November. They wonder together about the ethics of retreats, tourism, and what it means to be an “under-the-scene” worker. To learn more about Maui Reckoning with Kimberly Ann Johnson and Stephen Jenkinson, hosted by Khadija Striegel, go here. This is a gathering for the Maui ‘ohana. You can contribute to the event by making a donation here. Bio Khadija is an herbalist, bonesetter and farmer born, raised, and living in Maui. She's in graduate school studying Hawaiian language and culture. Khadija works with a non-profit caring for the native plant gardens at a Heiau, an ancient Hawaiian place of prayer. She offers Lomi Lomi body work to her community, in addition to tinctures and remedies under the title Family Traditions Maui. What You'll Hear: There are not only stories as a result of the fires in Maui - there are still ongoing lives and lived experiences. The variety of extremes that co-exist in Maui - of destination weddings, vacations, and those walking heavy with grief. These fires aren't an isolated incident. They are part of a broader timeline of things that have taken place on Maui. The donation effort of money and herbs and medicine are no small thing. This community is making an impact. There are still areas of the island that do not have safe water. Opening care packages with kids after a disaster. Development and tourism on the island has directly impacted the land in a way that doesn't feed the land, water, and people. The fires are inextricably linked to this. Lahaina as a special gathering place, whose streams lack water as a direct result of hotels and vacation homes and visitor rentals Land stewardship is actually simple. An act of love. Loving something not just for ourselves. Loving something by letting it be. The parallels of tourism and addiction. The addiction of going anywhere, doing anything, wherever I want. Whose job is it to teach the culture of a place? And to what audience? There is a longing to belong for many people. Many people find it in Hawaii. But at what cost? The difficulty of land and home ownership for native Hawaiians. Retreats in Hawaii. The infrequency of native Hawaiians leading sacred nature experiences? The power of a voice that doesn't say simply “it's all okay” when it's clearly not “all okay. What does it mean to be under-the-scene workers? Not behind-the-scene but under-the-scene? Reckoning in November is to offer something to the residents of Maui. Resources Maui Reckoning, with Kimberly Ann Johnson and Stephen Jenkinson, hosted by Khadija Striegel, for the Maui ‘ohana You are welcome to contribute to the event. Please send your donation via PayPal to Khadija here with the note “Maui Reckoning Donation”. If you would like to send herbs and materials directly to Khadija to support the community in Maui, find Khadija's letter and list here. In this episode you can meet my very dear friend Elizabeth who I met in Hawaii for the first time over 10 years ago. From the Watsu pool class to walking on the lava together to diving into the orgasmic meditation - our friendship was founded and reignited probably from many previous lifetimes. I am pretty sure we may have been some really powerful goddesses in tantric temples. We see how Elizabeth found her new path as a "pleasure weaver and loudspeaker" and what that journey was like. - What have the great leaders of change done? - How can we start to work with pleasure? - What is the glue keeping relationships together? - What is a "pleasure forward lifestyle"? - Sexual drama can trap energy and influence all of your life! What could be the first steps to start with the pleasure lifestyle? - How can we be aware that we can learn about ourselves through relationships? - What are the first things you can do to put your toes in to pleasure? An episode full of thrill and excitement and of course pleasure! A must listen to as well to see! Sifu David Wei is a 16th generation lineage holder of Wudang Zhang San Feng Pai, and a global instructor of Wudang Daoist wellness arts and traditional Chinese acupressure massage. Under the direct guidance of Daoist priest, Master Yuan Xiu Gang, David completed over 11,000 hours of formal training at the Wudang Mountain Traditional Taoist Martial Arts Academy of China, in 2007, at which time he was accepted as a senior disciple. During those five years, David practiced internal martial arts, medical Qi Gong and meditation. He is also trained in medical massage, Tui Na, Zen Shiatsu, Acu-oil, and Lomi Lomi; and is a certified Wat Po therapist. Prior to Wudang, he trained in traditional Shaolin Gong Fu and classical Chinese brush painting with renowned Master Y.C. Chiang at Wen Wu School. David has since travelled globally, conducting workshop intensives in China, Thailand, Bali, Czech Republic, Sweden, England, Germany, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, and across the U.S. In 2012, David founded the Wudang West Cultural Heritage Center, a 501(c)3 non-profit wellness ministry, based in Oakland, California, committed to the practice and preservation of classical Chinese healing arts. Show Notes: 1:00 David's journey into martial arts and accupressure. 6:30 What led him to shift his martial arts focus to that of a healing art instead of a breaking art. 9:30 Selling everything that he owned to begin life as a monk in China. 12:00 Staying true to his principles when an unexpected request was made of him by his Masters. 15:00 Discovering the real reason behind his mom's chronic shoulder pain–it had to do with emotional pain instead of mechanical pain. 16:00 How his insight into healing being a matter of the heart impacted his clinical work. 17:45 To have a lasting impact on his students or patients, it's not going to be in his technique, but in the space that he holds. 18:45 Getting people to slow down their tempo and give up their frantic pace is what leads to lasting healing. 24:00 If you put your energy on fixing things, there will always be more and more to fix, but if you put your energy on celebrating things, there will always be more and more to celebrate. 27:00 He isn't treating people–it's through Tai Chi movements that his patients feel better, simply by sharing his space. 33:00 His daily routine encompasses a daily walk, cup of tea, gentle mobility, meditation and holding space for guests. 34:00 He prescribes the 3 M's to his patients–movement, massage and meditation. 37:30 His current mentor is his 7-month-old son. 42:35 Someone he would enjoy meeting in life is the patriarch of his lineage, Zhang San Feng, who is often thought of as the creator of Tai Chi. 45:00 Some history on his lineage and the direction he has taken it. 51:00 His experience with trying out Plum Dragon Dit Da Jow and discovering that its fluidness, which differs from the thicker salves that he is used to, is what helps it absorb into the skin so quickly. He also loves the aromatic smell of the herbs. 54:00 Why he doesn't believe Traditional Chinese Medicine is a real thing–everything from the fact that it's not truly “traditional,” it's not exclusively “Chinese” and it's more about “healing” than “medicine” (which has the connotation of fixing a finite problem). We are all placed on this earth plane for a specific reason, and Tami Cook feels her mission is to help people reconnect back to their original self through a holistic approach of touch therapy. Tami has been practicing the art of bodymind balance for over 12 years. Her journey began at the AVEDA Institute in Washington DC where she studied a holistic approach to Esthiology, learning how the merging of ancient eastern wisdom paired with western technology could bring forth transformational results within the integumentary system. Desiring to dive deeper into the knowledge of the bodymind connection, Tami furthered her Education at the Institute of Psycho-Structural Balancing where she developed her skills as a Bodyworker. Some of the modalities she's studied were deep tissue massage, circulatory massage, spinal balancing, cranial sacral therapy, neuromuscular therapy, sports massage, reflexology of feet, hands, and ears, structural visceral integration, rock taping, rock blading, polarity, Lomi Lomi, Reiki, and cupping therapy just to name a few. Her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology paired with four years of experience as an educator in the Baltimore City Public high school system along with nine years of experience as an educator in the esthetic/massage industry gives Tami Cook a well-rounded approach to working with all people regardless of age, gender, culture or socioeconomic status. Acknowledging people as whole; their body, mind, and spirit is what brings life to the psychosomatic approach Tami takes in and out of her treatment room. Tami Cook's eclectic background has attracted people from all over the world who seek to know the ‘why' and ‘how' behind her ability to seamlessly integrate several modalities into one to create bodymind balance. When Tami Cook is not in the treatment room working one on one with her clients, she is traveling the world teaching her unique style of bodywork to fellow professionals seeking to deepen their awareness of the whole aspect of who we truly are. Nancy Peters, OTR/L, has been an occupational therapist for over 45 years. She attended the University of Buffalo at a time when there were not many occupational therapy schools in the country and the profession was fairly young. Upon graduation, she was offered a job at one of her fieldworks, the Buffalo VA Hospital, and worked there for 3 years until she left at the birth of her first child. Her next job was at Robert Warner Rehabilitation Center, providing therapeutic services for children. From there she became a school-based OT at Akron Central Schools. Nancy "retired" from the school job only to be called back into service at Summit Rehabilitation. Each job change required some study and continuing education to get up to speed with the different populations she was working with, but her OT background of looking at the whole person and helping them solve obstacles to their "occupation" made each job very fulfilling. Currently Nancy is working as a partner in DNS Designs, a company of which she is a co-founder along with her son and family friend, both of whom are engineers. The trio invented a product called Magzip and developed the brands are Ankhgear and Magzip using the motto "Innovations to Improve Life." Nancy has certifications in Infant Massage and Family Bonding and in Eastwest Somatics for Movement Therapy. She has taken multiple levels of CranioSacral Therapy, all levels of Reiki, Evaluation and Treatment of Sensory Processing Disorders, LomiLomi, Redefining Health from the Maryland University of Integrative Health, and numerous continuing education courses in diverse areas of study. She is a lifelong learner who delights in new information that can positively impact people's lives. On this episode, Nancy shares about her path into the profession of occupational therapy almost 5 decades ago and the many formative experiences she has had over the course of her career as an OT practitioner. She talks about her business venture, the beauty of universal design, and the development of the products like MagZip. As a special perk for listeners of the On The Air podcast, Ankgear is offering a 15% discount on anything on the website Ankhgear.com. My guest today is Gary Dillon, a mentor of many years and man I consider deeply grateful to know. I first met Gary through the Orphan Wisdom school, and have discovered that Gary's rich and varied life has taken him through many pathways and modalities: including learning the traditional Hawaiian art of Lomilomi bodywork, transformational movement therapy, and the arts of sacred intimacy. In our conversation today, Gary shares how he was given the name Kekoanui, which means A Warrior of Aloha. We explore the tale of Eros & Psyche and the dynamic nature of divinity, and we speak of the role of memory and beauty, as nourishment for the mythological World Tree. She has been knighted by the Hawaiian Royal Order of King Kamehameha for her world-renowned accomplishments in Lua. Michelle’s focus has been to teach, in a modern approach, how to become a whole warrior through martial arts training and philosophies to empower people around the world to live their healthiest life, both mentally and physically. Michelle helps her students to overcome past trauma and become more confident by teaching them to unleash their true inherent power. Michelle is also a highly sought-after global lecturer and author, and has had numerous appearances at colleges, and on the large and small screen. Known for her accomplishments as a 10th Black Belt and teacher (Kumu) of the rarely seen ancient Hawaiian Combat Art, Lua, Michelle is also the only woman accepted as a disciple and earn the title of teacher (Kumu) under Grand Master (‘Olohe) Solomon Kaihewalu in over 40 years. Michelle is also the only woman, thus far, to be given the designation of “Knight Commander” of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I for her continued work in promoting, protecting, and perpetuating the Hawaiian culture through the Lua. She was inducted into the 2016 Martial Arts History Museum’s Hall of Fame for altering the course of history of martial arts. A wood weapons maker and expert, Michelle is also the guardian and keeper of the only Kaihewalu Lua exhibit, located at the Martial Arts History Museum in Burbank, California. Michelle toured the Midwest as a professional Polynesian Hula dancer and choreographer (1990-2004). Lua was concealed in the Hula when Queen Ka’ahumanu banned the combat art from public display (around the same time Hula was banned). Lua is believed to been around a thousand years pre-Hula, which was approximately 1750 AD. Michelle now converts the Hula into the Lua. For the everyday woman, Michelle uses the Hula, Lua, Metaphysics, and Wellness to teach self-empowerment through the Butterfly Effect program (formerly the SHE (Super Hero Experience) program). Michelle strongly believes and can show that Lua and Hula (and Lomilomi) are the same use of energy. Lua is full contact (to bind and dislocate), Lomilomi is contact (to heal), and the Hula is no contact (storytelling).

Siri Phaneendra hosts this broadcast focusing on language. Language is how we communicate. Reporter of 20/20 Vision, Kenneth Jeon, reminds us that languages aren't just limited to spoken or written words. He brings us examples of film language. Guest authors Wayne Kealohi Powell in Hawaii and Patti Miller in British Columbia, Canada cultivate the spirit of Aloha with their book Hawaiian Shamanistic Healing. Aloha refers to the divine spirit of love that flows through all things. Caitlin Sim offers that language is how we communicate with one another, and how we express our desires and wants. She dissects the 1960s, Flowers for Algernon, showing the struggle between intellect and emotion, between being considered “smart” and having meaningful relationships with others. “Without language, one cannot talk to people and understand them; one cannot share their hopes and aspirations, grasp their history, appreciate their poetry, or savour their songs” - Nelson Mandela
