Pulitzer Prize finalist Sven Beckert joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about his new book, Capitalism: A Global History. Beckert describes capitalism as an ongoing process comparable in significance to geological forces; he examines the way it shapes our interactions with the world and notes its presence in every aspect of daily life. He recounts how it has been influenced and defined for the past thousand years by people all over the world, ranging from merchants to CEOs to rebels resisting enslavement. He unpacks capitalism's devastating global effects as well as its role in technological innovation and revolution. He explains that capitalism is a product of not only cities, but also the countryside. Finally, he addresses the idea that capitalism breeds inequality and argues for more nuance in understanding it as a human-made order that can be changed. He reads from Capitalism. To hear the full episode, subscribe through iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app (include the forward slashes when searching). We're back this week, with a movie that take the traditional voodoo angle on zombies. Behold THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW from 1988. Directed by Wes Craven. A young Bill Pullman portrays a young enthobotanist who travels to Haiti in search of a portion that revives the dead. Intro: “Necromaniacs” – Mike Hill Outro: “We All Die Laughing”– The Angelic Process
“I don't think I'm smart enough to listen to this…” As with the many legendary concept albums that have come before, masterpieces such as King Diamond's Abigail, Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime, and Dream Theater's Scenes From A Memory, THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, the latest offering from OPETH, is one of the finest examples of storytelling ever captured in audio form and is their first proper “concept album” to date. “They cram so much into such a small space…” Chronicling the reading of the will of a wealthy patriarch (and featuring Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull as the patriarch in question), THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT perfectly represents the culmination of the various components that have established OPETH as a progressive metal force to be reckoned with for more than 30 years. “I realize this is not y'all's favorite flavor of the month…” With a seamless blending of their early progressive and melodic death metal period through their more eclectic, 70's prog rock infused progressive metal period of the 2010's, OPETH is akin to a “haunted house version of Dream Theater”, loaded with a wide variety of sonic textures, top tier instrumental prowess, and vivid lyrical imagery, all of which are covered in a thin drapery of darkness. “Have they ever done anything ‘hooky'?” JOIN US as we take on what is arguably one of the finest progressive metal concept albums in existence (and most certainly a top contender for “Album Of The Year”) and quite possibly the greatest OPETH album of all time, THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT. A long but worthwhile episode this week as we dive into the recent Running Man adaption from Edgar Wright. It got us thinking about other films this year that have aspired to thoughts about political revolution and fallen short. We cover parts of Wicked: For Good, One Battle After Another, and Caught Stealing and discuss what it means when these movies use revolutionary language and imagery, the role of Black people (women specifically) in these films, and much more! We've got a few last episodes before the year ends, including Francis Ford Coppola's insane musical Finian's Rainbow and our 2025 year end wrap up!

Today's episode is something a little different. I sat down with the amazing Ash from Rainbow Sky Creations for a raw and honest chat, and this time I found myself on the other side of the microphone. It felt a bit strange being the one answering the questions, but Ash has a way of making you feel safe enough to tell the truth about your work, your why, and the messy bits in between. We talked about teaching, life, purpose, and what it means to try and make a difference in this wild and wonderful profession. It's a conversation filled with heart, a few laughs, and some vulnerable moments that I'm really proud to share. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed being part of it.

When listener Sakura's husband came home from his morning walk in Cambridgeshire, UK, he told her about a massive rainbow he'd seen. But when he showed her a picture, she didn't think it was particularly large. So how big is a rainbow really? Are they always the same size? And if some are bigger than others, is there a limit? To find the answers, presenter Marnie Chesterton meets independent rainbow expert Philip Laven in a pitch-black studio to simulate how a rainbow is formed. He demonstrates how they are created by sunlight, reflecting and refracting in millions of little water droplets. But what does that mean for their size? Raymond Lee, retired professor from the US Naval academy, says that rainbows are not objects and don't have a linear size, just a specific angular size that's relative to the person seeing it. But Marnie doesn't give up so easily – some rainbows still look bigger than others. In her journey to discover other ways to size up a rainbow, Marnie hears from Australian aerial photographer Colin Leonhardt who stunned the world with a beautiful picture. Next, assistant professor Ping Wah Li from The Chinese University of Hong Kong explains why it's possible to come across more than one rainbow at a time. And finally, atmospheric scientist Harald Edens shares another way to consider size, as well as how much he struggles to explain the complexity of rainbows to his four-year old daughter. Happy Holiday week everyone! This week we're visiting the Pop Mystery vault for a look at “Cats” an absurd show that really keeps giving. Highly recommend the movie version for that post-meal fever dream period if your Friendsgivign is cool. “Cats” is a musical so ridiculous that it often drives people to anger. So why has this absurd show made so much money, and how does it keep taunting us all with its reemergence into culture? Jellicle journalist, comic, and pop culture junkie Tess Barker is on the case. Featuring interviews with actress Sara Jean Ford (On Broadway: “Phantom of the Opera; “Finian's Rainbow;” “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying;” “Cats:” ) and musicologist and dramaturg Dr. Lynda Paul (professor, Yale University; PhD music history/ethnomusicology/performance studies). On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Lenny Rosenberg and Adaeze Nwanonyiri Rosenberg, owners of New York Bagel Deli and Bakery - aka NYBD and Bakery. The husband-and-wife team also own Bea's Bakery in the Valley, as well as star in "It's a Sweet World" on JLTV and have a cookbook by the same name. NYBD and Bakery combines Lenny's Jewish, baking and restaurant roots with Adaeze's Nigerian culture and design (interior, exterior, presentation) expertise. "It's a really classic bakery that's based with Jewish products, but also is multicultural," Lenny explains. "We wanted to merge cultures; that's what we're all about." He adds, "We realized, going through all the bakery products that I've made over the years, they're all multicultural: rainbow cookies are Italian, Danish are from the Danish … almost every single recipe is from another culture." These foods all have a story behind them, along with cultural significance. For instance, the kola nut in their red velvet cupcakes are from Adaeze's Nigerian background, and it is as significant in their rituals as breaking bread (challah) is in the Jewish culture. Whether you are embracing different cultures or getting ready to bake, it's important to be open-minded, curious and always willing to learn. "Our brand is It's a Sweet World," Adaeze says. "Always think positive … live, laugh and eat." Lenny and Adaeze Rosenberg share the NYBD and Bakery backstory, as well as some of their favorite multi-cultural treats and tips for baking success. They also share their recipe for Italian rainbow cookies, which you can find at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. This week's episode kicks off with Tamara sharing her fun weekend with family eating a Thanksgiving dinner and visiting her Great-Aunt. Then Rheannon shares the trials and stress of buying a new vehicle. Tamara is puzzled by the riddle and is sad she can't solve it. Not everyone wants to drive a van it seems. Rheannon is not having fun with the adulting of buying a car. Birthday fun was underway with cake decorating for Rheannon's youngest daughter. Rheannon took her oldest to help pick out a birthday present for the youngest and of course landed on a rainbow chicken. The episode wraps up with a review of recent shows and movies we have watched. The big question of how scary Frankenstein is, but since neither of us have seen it is only speculation.

The "Call of the Day" features Jim from the Jersey Shore, a furious Yankee fan who "savages" Brandon Tierney for not being more aggressive in his criticism of Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner. Jim blasts Hal as a "trust fund puke" for complaining about the team's payroll during the COVID pandemic and vows a boycott, calling any attending fan a "sucker." The passionate rant leads to a discussion about accountability: Sal suggests frustrated Yankee fans should raise their kids as Mets fans, noting that Steve Cohen's spending ensures management is held accountable. The hosts then debate a great listener question: Which GM—Cashman or Stearns—would be better at operating under a hypothetical salary cap? They conclude that Stearns' experience in Milwaukee gives him the edge
William Taylor - The Bible's portrayal of our broken world is compelling in its clear-eyed realism about humanity and life. It is equally captivating in what it reveals about God—nowhere more so than in the aftermath of the flood. God's word makes sense of God's world.

I think Rainbow Kitchen does so much more than "Feed the Belly and Feed the Soul" for their Monday to Friday breakfast and lunch is vital to so many. Their school programs and varied menu allows people of all ages in Esquimalt - and beyond - to continue and to thrive. No questions asked, you can come for something nutritious, warm, and flavourful and if you wish you can bring some home for dinner, tomorrow, a friend, or roommate. I speak with Executive Director Patrick Jawes soon after his 6th anniversary with the organization. The topic? Well, I don't recall this program happening on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, but here in the spirit of fellowship during the darkest days of the calendar I offer this conversation.

A big thank-you to our young friend from Singapore, Umar Ihsan, for creating such a wonderful drawing of Rainbow Island for us! The picture is full of imagination and childlike joy. The funniest part is that in your artwork, Sheriff Labrador has completely lost his handsome mango-shaped face and now has a pear-shaped one instead! And Officer Doberman looks so puffed-up and serious, as if he's glaring at a villain with fierce determination. The whole picture is creative, amusing, and absolutely delightful to look at. Thank you, Umar—we love it!

In this episode, Artist Mindi Oaten shares about her collection,” Garments of Praise: Mantled to Reign.” The collection draws its inspiration from the rainbow and Mindi shares the heart behind it all at a prior Entourage Ministries event. This collection expresses a bright, new season for the bride of Christ; to come up higher, to shine and reflect God's glory, in the midst of darkness. To rule and reign with Him. To throw off the grave clothes and be mantled with the garment of praise, fully embracing our purpose and new assignments on the earth. Declaring heavens glorious colors in unity, like a rainbow after a storm. Making herself ready.... Isaiah 61:1-3 1 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise..."
