Zoombombing, Cambridge Analytica, AI bias, misinformation, hate speech…when tech companies and researchers come under fire, people wonder: why are they not thinking about potential harms? Unintended consequences of technology are a significant social issue, and when we “move fast and break things” it's ethical considerations that often get pushed to the side. Like technical debt, the implied cost of future bug fixes when we rush to release technology, ethical debt is what we accumulate when we don't consider ethical and social implications during the design process. How can we help technologists speculate about the future? Also how might we understand real impacts of technological harms on everyone, and give everyone the knowledge and tools to be more critical of technology? Join the Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity on March 1, 2022 as we welcome Casey Fiesler for a moderated discussion with Professor Yafit Lev-Aretz, Director of the Robert Zicklin Center's Program on Tech Ethics.

Show Notes The Problem The K–12 Cybersecurity Resource Center, tracked 408 cybersecurity incidents that hit K–12 institutions over the past year, an 18 percent increase from 2019 and an average of two cyberattacks per school day aimed at the nation's education system. The most widespread cyber incidents were ransomware attacks, in which a hacker infiltrates a network and hold it for ransom, along with data breaches of student and staff personal data that included everything from bullying reports to Social Security numbers. Class invasions were also a significant trend, with these incidents involving a malicious actor gaining access to an online video conferencing system and disrupting it, often with inappropriate images or words. This trend was seen particularly at the beginning of the pandemic, and was used to interrupt classes on video conferencing platform Zoom in so many situations that the term “Zoombombing” was coined. News Items Passage of $1 Billion Department of Homeland Security cybersecurity grant program While the grants will technically be administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which has long been DHS's main grant-making unit, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act calls on CISA to serve in an advisory capacity — work that Wales said has already started. The infrastructure law requires each state to develop a comprehensive cybersecurity plan to qualify for the grants, and about 80% of the total funds will eventually make their way to local jurisdictions. Wales told Clarke that leaves CISA with several questions to answer before the money begins flowing, which is expected in 2022. Goal is development of “common baseline” – That's likely to include some cybersecurity steps that are commonly described as fundamental — multi-factor authentication, limiting the number of privileged user accounts on a government network, patching vulnerabilities as soon as they're identified and running regular risk assessments. But those are sometimes unaffordable for the small, local governments that stand to benefit from the new grant program. Signature of K–12 Cybersecurity Act requires the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to create cybersecurity recommendations and tools for schools to use to defend themselves against hackers after conducting a study on the cybersecurity risks facing K–12 institutions. What Should Schools Be Doing Now? Educate themselves about the grant process and information needed Educate teachers, students, and parents about the importance of cybersecurity Cultivate a culture of cybersecurity For K–12 IT Departments Check CISA Web site regularly Review lists of potential threats [from Ikon Business Group] Advanced Persistent Threat Attack [APT]: a network attack in which an unauthorized person gains access to a network and stays there undetected for a long period. Brute-force Cracking: a trial and error method used by application programs to decode encrypted data such as passwords or Data Encryption Standard (DES) keys, through exhaustive effort (using brute force) rather than employing intellectual strategies. Credential Reuse: Once attackers have a collection of usernames and passwords from a breached website or service (easily acquired on any number of black market websites on the internet), they know that if they use these same credentials on other websites there's a chance they'll be able to log in. Distributed Denial of Services [DDoS]: an attempt to make an online service unavailable by overwhelming it with traffic from multiple sources. Drive-by Download: a program that is automatically downloaded to your computer without your consent or even your knowledge. Malware: refers to various forms of harmful software, such as viruses and ransomware. Once malware is in your computer, it can wreak all sorts of havoc, from taking control of your machine, to monitoring your actions and keystrokes, to silently sending all sorts of confidential data from your computer or network to the attacker's home base. Network-probe: a probe is an attempt to gain access to a computer and its files through a known or probable weak point in the computer system. Phishing: When internet fraudsters impersonate a business to trick you into giving out your personal information. Phishing Attacks are the primary vector for malware attacks and are usually comprised of a malicious e-mail attachment or an e-mail with an embedded, malicious link. Ransomware: a type of malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid. Session Hijacking and Man-in-the-Middle Attacks: The session between your computer and the remote web server is given a unique session ID, which should stay private between the two parties; however, an attacker can hijack the session by capturing the session ID and posing as the computer making a request, allowing them to log in as an unsuspecting user and gain access to unauthorized information on the web server. SQL Injection Attack: uses malicious code to get a server to divulge information it normally wouldn't. This is especially problematic if the server stores private customer information from the website, such as credit card numbers, usernames and passwords (credentials), or other personally identifiable information, which are tempting and lucrative targets for an attacker. 7 Steps for Better Cybersecurity [from Ikon Business Group] Get buy in from top administration – A good cybersecurity plan requires line items in the budget for people, hardware, and software – which means getting the principal, CIO, Operations Manager, and any other top-level decision makers on board. Perform live simulations and training exercises with students and staff – The best training today is one in which users undergo a simulated attack specific to their job or role. Follow up any training by testing how well the lesson was learned. Send out occasional phony phishing emails to check how many employees still fail to recognize the threat. Conduct evaluations – Don't be afraid to perform evaluations of both employees and systems to find out how vulnerable your organization is to attack. Present users with a realistic type of cyber-attack and include a follow-up meeting for end users and IT personnel to discuss the results of the campaign and how to avoid scams in the future. Communicate – Don't opt for scare tactics. The goal is to build a culture of cyber awareness. Start small with a few videos or infographics to kick things off. Don't waste time sending out long memos that will only get ignored. Keep it fun, keep it short. Create a formal plan – IT teams should develop a formal, documented plan for cybersecurity training that is reviewed and updated often with the latest information on attack vectors and other risks. Stress the importance of security at school and at home – Tech leaders should help employees understand the importance of cyber hygiene not just in the workplace, but also at home, Pollard said. “Teach users about privacy, security, and how the lessons learned at work can apply at home and in their personal lives to give them a ‘what's in it for me' they can apply all the time, not just at work,” he added. Reward users – Reward users that find malicious emails, and share stories about how users helped thwart security issues. IT leaders should also empathize with people who make mistakes. Include posters, contests and other reminders to drive home an easy-to-understand message that security is everyone's personal responsibility. On today's program, new sexual abuse charges have been leveled against the recently deceased Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias.  We'll have the latest.  Also on today's program:  When unwanted or disruptive people log on to your Zoom meeting, that's come to be called Zoombombing.  It's starting to happen in church services and other worship gatherings.  We'll have a report.  And we'll have the latest installment in our Generous Living series.  Today a couple from Manhattan who gave up the Wall Street lifestyle so they could support God's work. Up first today, an update on a story we first brought you in July. Blackbaud, one of the nation's largest fundraising and donor management companies, announced this week that the personal data of some donors to charities that use the Blackbaud's software was exposed to cybercriminals. Regular listeners to the podcast know that through the month of September we were offering a copy of my new book “Faith-Based Fraud” to anyone who made a donation to MinistryWatch.  The demand for the book has been so great that we have printed more books and we've extended that offer through October.   So if you missed the offer in September, it's not too late.  If you'd like to know more or make a donation, you can go to www.MinistryWatch.com and hit the DONATE button at the top of the page. Each week, Warren and Natasha bring you news about Christian ministries, as well as the latest in charity and philanthropy, news that we examine from a Christian worldview perspective.  Our goal is to help us become better stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Steve Gandy.  We get database and other technical support from Cathy Goddard, Stephen DuBarry, and Casey Sudduth.  Writers who contributed to today's program include Christina Darnell, Bobby Ross, and Warren Smith.  We also received editorial assistance this week from our friends at The Non-Profit Times. May God bless you.

YouTube: https://bit.ly/2y1aU3y► NordVPN Protege tu Privacidad y Seguridad70% descuento en NordVPN + 1 Mes Gratishttps://nordvpn.org/tendenciastechPalabra clave: TendenciasTech► Donaciones PayPal - Patreonhttps://www.paypal.me/tendenciastechhttps://www.patreon.com/tendenciastech► Redes SocialesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TendenciasTechTwitter: https://twitter.com/tendenciastechInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tendenciastechMixer: https://mixer.com/TendenciasTechTwitch: https://www.twitch.tv/tendenciastechPeriscope: https://www.pscp.tv/TendenciasTech► PodcastAlojar tu Podcast (Acast): https://bit.ly/2D9TNPJApple: http://apple.co/2CtwnidGoogle: http://bit.ly/2lQHnDaSpotify: https://spoti.fi/2lJKPzyCastBox: https://bit.ly/33jyB4e► Contacto (English - Español)tendenciastech@outlook.com#Podcast #Tecnología #ZoomSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/tendenciastech. On this episode of Navigate, a special six-part podcast series with Pexip and Futurum Research, host Daniel Newman talks with Giles Chamberlain about how to approach privacy and security for your video conferencing solutions.   Video Conferencing Popularity Bringing Privacy and Security to the Forefront   In the last month, video conferencing has seen an explosion in popularity due to shelter-in-place orders. More people are on video than ever before, but this huge increase has also brought increased security concerns. Zoombombing and other video conferencing breaches have made headlines for weeks. Enterprises are realizing that it is not as easy as just clicking a link and joining a video. There has been a greater call to ensure privacy and security for all users.   Giles noted that when looking at a video conferencing solution, you need to consider privacy and security individually. Let's break it down.   Breaking Down Privacy and Security   Every video conference call creates data. If you're recording audio, video and chat sessions that is all data that is in the hands of the provider. But even if you're not recording, you're still creating metadata. That could be IP addresses, email addresses, or company information. Protecting this information is crucial. Laws and regulations like the GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA and others set the standard of how this information is protected.   When considering a solution, it's important to perform a risk assessment or research the standards that companies guarantee. It is the responsibility of the ITDM in the enterprise to ensure privacy by understanding the security protocols that are in place.   An enterprise should also have their own set of security protocols in place for video conferencing. Giles recommended that companies start with strict security and loosen restrictions as you operate. No employee will ever start with lax security and then voluntarily move to a more secure environment. Retrofitting is hard.   For example, end-to-end encryption should be standard from day one. Meeting ID numbers and passwords to enter meeting rooms should be standard. User experience might be sacrificed in the name of security, but it's table stakes.   Hosting Options   Privacy and security standards come down to where a video conferencing solution is hosted. The great advantage of the cloud service is somebody else does all the work for you. But you still have the legal obligation to know what data you're giving them, where it's going, and what's happening with it. You can't just abdicate the responsibility altogether. If a company decides that the risk of losing important data is too high then they can bring it all in-house and host in their own data center. This is where Pexip started. Self-hosted solutions were sold to providers to host on-prem.   The second option available is shared hosting. Companies that trust a cloud provider like Google, Azure, or AWS can move the compute capacity to the cloud while still having employees manage the service. The data is still under the control of the organization, but the hosting is elsewhere to take the strain off the company's data center.   The final option is managed hosting. Companies can turn the whole service over to someone else. Another company provides the compute power and ensures the data protection.   Some off-the-shelf video conferencing solutions only offer one hosting option. Pexip on the other hand offers all three, giving customers better options for what fits their needs. At the end of the day, enterprise leaders know what they need and what they need to protect.   For more information about Pexip, their products and offerings be sure to check out their website or listen to the full episode of Navigate below.

Zoom is one of the most popular videoconferencing tools being used during the COVID-19 pandemic. Teachers nationwide are using it to hold remote classes while schools remain physically closed. But stories of so-called “Zoombombing” like Armstrong's highlight some of the security risks that come into play when school districts nationwide are forced to quickly switch instruction to online formats because of the COVID-19 pandemic.Zoombombing is loosely defined as people harassing others, spewing abuse or showing inappropriate content on Zoom, such as racist language or profanity.Zoombombing reports have prompted some school districts and agencies to ban Zoom, including New York City schools, the largest school district in the country. NASA, SpaceX and the Taiwanese government also stopped using Zoom.Story: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/education/story/2020-04-08/san-diego-zoombombing-incident-highlights-need-for-schools-to-use-safety-controls

A couple of days ago, Travis Ketchum, CEO of Campaign Refinery and Contest Domination, Chris Bruno, CEO of SocialINK, and myself, decided to run an open Zoom Collaboration Call to help businesses and entrepreneurs with their marketing during these difficult times. The idea was to try to help as many people as we could during this COVID situation. We are all experiencing the same things and it's hard to figure out what to do next when no one knows what's coming next. While we did EVENTUALLY manage to have a great conversation and share some solid ideas on what we can all be doing right now, unfortunately it got off to a bit of a rocky start... Basically we experienced first hand what #ZoomBombing was the hard way. We also learned a valuable lesson… Don't put an open link to a Zoom call out into the world! We didn't want to ask people to register as didn't want to put anyone off thinking it was some kind of “data gathering” exercise. But unfortunately a few people who have clearly been stuck inside for too long showed up and thought it would be hilarious to start throwing insults, profanities and showing screens of lewd acts…! There's a few villages missing more than one idiot by the look of things! You can read what Chris wrote about this by reading the blog post he wrote about it here But as everything that is going on right now requires quick thinking, resourcefulness and flexibility, we did manage to quickly pivot and host the call on a different platform (Thanks Travis!!!) So tune in to hear us share our thoughts about the "new normal" and discuss creative ways to sustain (and grow) your business during this challenging period and beyond. COVID-19 Related Rapid Deployment of Tech Raises New Security Risks

Futurum Tech Podcast

In this episode of the Futurum Tech Podcast, I'm joined by my colleague and fellow analyst, Olivier Blanchard, in a discussion about the COVID-19 related rapid deployment of tech that we are experiencing as a result of the coronavirus outbreak and the new security risks posed as a result. Our goal is to highlight some of those security risks, offer suggestions on how to mitigate those risks, and also explore some other goings on in the world of cybersecurity along the way, largely driven as well by the COVID-19 pandemic we are slogging through the world over.   Main Dive At a time when many, or perhaps most, of us are stuck at home, Zoom, Slack, Google, Microsoft Teams and other and other online collaboration tools have become our collective lifelines. While that's great — and it's wonderful that kids can learn online using collaboration tools, we can work online using these tools, and we can host family gatherings and happy hours using these platforms, there's an inherent security risk that you can be sure hackers are paying attention to, and exploiting whenever possible.   THIS WEEK's FAST FIVE Tech Tools are Assisting With Tracking the Mapping and Spreading of COVID-19. Zoombombing attacks are disrupting classes, interviews, meetings, and even social gatherings. China-based threat group launches widespread malicious campaign. Department of Homeland Security warns terrorists may exploit COVID-19 pandemic. The Justice League to the rescue.   This Week's Tech Bites Winner: Ecommerce: Blessing For Consumers, Curse for Amazon Workers. While the technology that powers ecommerce giant Amazon is, for most of us, a beautiful thing, Amazon workers might feel slightly less enthusiastic. Warehouse workers and other Amazon employees (and likely drivers as well), question whether Amazon is doing enough to keep them safe. While they are likely happy to have jobs as the jobless claims are at nearly 3.3 million, economic security and personal health and safety, and that of their families, is understandably on the minds of these front-line workers. It is great for consumers to be able to sit safely at home and shop online, but that privilege comes at great cost to a whole lot of people who are reportedly both scared and frustrated. And not to pin all this on Amazon, we also discuss the fact that front line workers in grocery stores, Costco, Walmart, Target, along with millions of healthcare workers are equally as concerned about their safety as they make their way to work every day. Companies need to do everything they can to step up their efforts and keep these superheroes of a different kind healthy and well.   Our Crystal Ball:  In the Crystal Ball section of our podcast we always circle back to the main dive and try to make some kind of prediction. We are sorry to say that this week's Crystal Ball prediction as it relates to the rapid deployment of tech and security concerns that presents is not a rosy one. We are pretty confident that things are going to get a lot worse on the cybersecurity front before they get better.   INFORMATION: This Futurum Podcast features Shelly Kramer (@ShellylKramer) and Olivier Blanchard (@OABlanchard).
