Welcome to an audio-led edition of Unmade. Today, ahead of his visit to Australia for next month's IAB Leadership Summit, we talk to IAB Tech Lab's CEO Tony Katsur about the state of play in digital advertising. And the Unmade Index approaches a new low.Only Unmade's paying members get full access. They were entitled to a ticket to today's inaugural Unlock conference in Sydney. They also get an invitation to our Compass: Reflections and Projections event, taking place across six states throughout November. Next year they'll also be able to join us at our AI-focused conference HumAIn (Q2 2025) and at our retail media conference REmade. They get full access to our archives, which go behind the paywall after two months. Feeling jealous of all that access? Maybe that should be you. Upgrade today.‘Data provenance is going to be one of the top issues in 2025 and 2026': What IAB Tech Lab CEO Anthony Katsur worries aboutBeing the boss of IAB Tech Lab, the standard setting body of the digital advertising industry, must be a frustrating experience. With more responsibility than power, the IAB attempts to shepherd its members towards agreed tech standards including around audience measurement. In the rise of the open web, the industry broadly agreed about specs like standard ad sizes and audience measurement. In Australia, the IAB endorses Ipsos as preferred currency, and before that Nielsen. In CTV (connected TV) though, in Australia and around the world, there's no such consensus. That includes Foxtel at the centre of a coalition of streamers pushing for a solution from Kantar, while OzTAM, owned by Seven, Nine and Ten, takes a different direction with VOZ (Virtual Australia). Then there's the issue of global platforms who want to apply their own measurement and standards to their walled gardens, which tends to deliver them the results they want.Today's podcast guest is IAB Tech Lab's New York-based Tony Katsur, talking to Unmade's Tim Burrowes. Katsur be speaking on standards at the IAB's Leadership Summit in Sydney on November 20.Katsur is a veteran of the digital advertising economy having worked for some of the industry's formative players including DoubleClick, MediaMath and Rubicon Project before joining IAB Tech Lab three years agoIn the wide ranging conversation, Katsur describes himself not so much as a sherrif of what was a wild west, but a constable, imploring his constituents to do the right thing. On CTV he observes: “There are companies that may believe that they're a walled garden, but they're not. Therefore they think they can go it alone with their own proprietary forms of measurement.“There are a lot of companies out there that think they're a bigger deal than they are, and think they can measure themselves or have their own proprietary measurement standard.”Among the other topics discusses are the threat that the large language models of AI pose to the intellectual property of media owners; why data provenance will be the key phrase of 2025 and 2026; whether the preparation for cookie deprecation that never came was wasted effort (he argues not); and reasons to feel optimistic for publishers.* Tony Katsur will be speaking at the IAB Australia Leadership Summit on November 20Unmade Index hovers over the trapdoorThe Unmade Index slipped to within a fraction of a percentage point of a new all-time low yesterday. It's previous all-time low of 437.4 points came six weeks ago.The index was pulled down by shifts at the top of town, with Nine losing 1.3% and its majority owned real estate platform Domain dropping 1.7%. Nine is now trading at its lowest point since April 2020.It was a better day for the audio players, with ARN Media gaining 2.8% and Southern Cross Austereo up by 3.1%.Today's podcast was edited by Abe's Audio. When faced with unprecedented challenges, the true mettle of a leader is tested. Daniel Bisgeier, a seasoned CFO, exemplifies how continuous improvement and strategic decisiveness pave the way for corporate resilience and growth. Reflecting on his career, Bisgeier notes that significant progress often doesn't come in bursts but through "persistent effort over time and constant refinement." A poignant illustration of Bisgeier's strategic agility occurred during his tenure at MediaMath, amid the tumultuous onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The crisis had abruptly shifted the demand environment, straining the company's working capital due to misaligned payment arrangements. Recognizing the urgent need for liquidity, Bisgeier spearheaded a proactive initiative to renegotiate payment terms with vendors and clients alike. This strategic move was not just about navigating a crisis but transforming it into an opportunity for more sustainable operations. "We had to make sure we had backup plans," Bisgeier recalls, underscoring the necessity of adaptability in financial strategy. By directly addressing the liquidity constraints with calculated adjustments, his team not only navigated the immediate financial tumult but also positioned the company for stronger financial health post-crisis. This career chapter speaks to Bisgeier's philosophy that impactful leadership in finance goes beyond maintaining the status quo—it involves anticipating changes, embracing challenges, and crafting solutions that ensure long-term sustainability. From his days as an analyst at Goldman Sachs to his current role at Constellation, Bisgeier tells us his career journey reveals a commitment to readiness where as a leader he IS ready to act when it counts the most.

There is a lot of talk these days about consumers data privacy, and with good reason. With many high profile data breaches exposing customer data, as well as a lot of uncertainty about how consumers' data is exactly being used, there have been moves both from a regulatory perspective (such as GDPR in the EU and CCPA in the State of California) to provide greater protection for consumers and their data. Yet, we also see that when customers have trust in a brand to use their data well, they are open to providing more information. For instance, a recent MediaMath survey showed that 74% of consumers are willing to share preferences, interests and demographic information directly with brands if that would improve their online shopping experience. Today we're going to talk about the importance of consumer privacy in fostering stronger relations between platforms and customers. Anudit Vikram, former board member of the IAB Data Center of Excellence and Chief Product Officer, MediaMath joins me in a discussion about consumer privacy (amid Amazon fines), Google's FLoC (which recently wrapped up the first phase of testing), and addressable/scalable identity solutions to replace third-party cookies. Anudit explains, “While there has been a flurry of activity preparing for the demise of the third-party cookie, the pushback around it and signals from the EU hinted that it would not be smooth sailing for Google, so, ultimately, it's not a complete shock that the timing changed. There is no question that first-party data performs better, and that the quality of third-party data is questionable, but that is not the only factor driving transparency. Transparency to the actual user – what we call addressability – is directly affected too. To continue the momentum of creating a more transparent supply chain, industry leaders must continue work around the activation of first party identity options and creating cohort-based solutions. As far as next steps for the industry, marketers, advertisers, publishers and the like should use this time to start working with first party identity solutions and perfect the stack they will use, while still being able to leverage the scale provided by third-party cookies.”

Earning her master’s degree and on the path to a Ph.D., she was published in scientific journals, began teaching chemistry labs at a local college, and coached figure skating to make ends meet. Aiming to earn a Ph.D. she failed her qualifying exams, not once, but twice. She knew her discipline well but suffered from panic attacks that interfered with her focus.  She aimed for environmental engineering roles from there landing a job with the City of New York which lasted two years. It was not a culture fit for her. As Inc. Magazine reported, “Isaac Lidsky may possess the most eclectic resume in business. Over the years, he has been a child television star (he played series regular “Weasel” on NBC’s “Saved By The Bell: The New Class”), a Supreme Court clerk (for Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg), and the co-founder of an internet startup.” The full list of his accomplishments is far longer: Lidsky graduated from Harvard at 19 with an honors degree in mathematics and computer science. He then founded [x+1] with MediaMath’s Joe Zawadzki, which was later acquired for $230 million. Fascinated by the burgeoning field of “cyberlaw,” Lidsky left [x+1] and returned to Harvard to attend law school and graduated magna cum laude in 2004. As a U.S. Justice Department lawyer, Lidsky argued more than a dozen appeals in federal court on behalf of the United States and never lost a case. Along the way, he founded Hope For Vision, a nonprofit organization to fund the development of treatments for blinding diseases and within 5 years grew it to a dozen cities nationwide and more than $5 million. In 2011 Lidsky returned to his entrepreneurial roots. He purchased a small, struggling residential construction subcontractor and led the development of a proprietary suite of logistics and ERM software to transform it. His reinvented construction services company grew more than tenfold in its first five years, and today it boasts annual revenues in excess of $250 million. In 2016 Lidsky set out to share with others his empowering approach to living and leading, and he was promptly recognized as a visionary thought leader. His first book, Eyes Wide Open, hit the shelves as a New York Times best seller in March 2017. TED invited Lidsky to present a mainstage TED Talk at TEDSUMMIT 2016 in Banff, Canada, and it was viewed more than a million times in its first 20 days. Lidsky now consults and speaks to organizations around the world on issues including leadership, accountability and self-empowerment. In 2018 Lidsky returned to his adtech roots, founding Underscore CLT and taking the helm as its President. Lidsky is determined to lead the development of a new technology infrastructure for digital marketing, using blockchain and related technologies to mitigate the industry’s longstanding structural challenges and to deliver on its untapped promise. Perhaps most striking, Lidsky is only 39, and he is blind. Born with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a rare degenerative disease of the retina, from age 12 to 25 he slowly lost his sight. As his bio makes clear, however, neither his youth nor his blindness have limited him.Eyes Wide Open - http://www.lidsky.com/book/ Connect With Isaac  Website - www.lidsky.com Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/IsaacLidsky/ Instagram - @isaaclidsky Twitter - @isaaclidsky  Are you looking to find your purpose, navigate transition or fix your relationships, all with a powerful group of men from around the world?   During the height of the cold war, the space race between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. was as much an ideological struggle as it was a battle of technological exploration. When the U.S. first stepped foot on the moon, many framed the historical moment as an essential victory of democracy over communism. This melding of ideology and technological progress plays out in our own time through a struggle for design and control over the next wave of invention and innovation. In our interconnected world and at the precipice of machine learning and artificial intelligence, values play an increasingly existential role in the future of tech. But who controls these values comes down to who can harness these new technologies, pitting us in yet another battle for the future.  In this episode, Out of Order will cover the current state of technological progress, who is ahead and where, how the transatlantic community can promote design and control of new technological developments, and the effects which non-liberal actors can have on the future of tech. Are the U.S.–European values sufficiently in synch to allow for global leadership in the norms and rules that will govern the future? Do we even realize we’re in a battle for the future?   Join the President of the German Marshall Fund, Karen Donfried, Vice President of Global Government Relations at MediaMath and GMF non-resident fellow, Daniel Sepulveda,  GMF Fellow, Amy Studdart, and our host Peter Sparding as they discuss these questions and more on the tenth edition of the Out of Order podcast.

Programmatic Untangled | Conversations with educators and subject matter experts in the digital marketing realm

Welcome to New Marketing Institute’s very first podcast, Programmatic Untangled: where we discuss MediaMath’s key to unlocking your audience and NMI’s role in education around that. The Advertising Industry has changed drastically - not only in the way that consumers are seeing advertisements and interacting with brands, but also in how media is being bought and sold. Ads, which once could only be seen in newspapers, magazines, television, and billboards, can now be viewed on digital screens across multiple devices, and even personalized for particular consumers. Harry Duran is your host for this Podcast, which has been co-produced with AdTech company, MediaMath who founded the first demand side platform (DSP) in 2007. Simply put, a DSP is a technology platform that allows advertisers to purchase digital advertising space in an automated fashion reaching the audiences they want at the scale they need. After the creation of DSPs, the buying process evolved and what used to be done over the phone – the negotiation and purchase of digital media – can now be done in real-time through smart technology. This changed the way advertisers and agencies managed and executed their digital marketing campaigns which revolutionized the industry, creating a new niche within the space: advertising technology (AdTech for short). However, migrating from traditional media to digital required a completely new skill set for marketers and a better understanding of the landscape. In order to meet the growing demand for education, the New Marketing Institute was founded in 2012 as the Learning & Development arm of MediaMath with the goal of empowering marketers to understand the changes happening within the industry and providing education that meets the learner where they are in location, language, learning style and level of experience. In this Podcast series we will be tackling digital advertising’s most mysterious topics from education on programmatic to big data and audience management – just to name a few! We will be releasing episodes on the last Friday of every month. You can expect our guests to be subject matter experts in the digital marketing realm. Join us as we untangle the mysteries of the AdTech industry together! Full show notes
