We also take on The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. Taylor's 31 track odyssey sparks debate about the merits and the cringe-factor of her lyricism, Antonoff vs Dessner and how corporate greed is depriving the 2020s of classic albums. So does Taylor's chart-domination make her the biggest gangster in music right now?

I guess all those tiktok and youtube mashups were on to something because Paramore Singer Hayley Williams and former guitarist Joshua Farro will now be able to cash in on Olivia Rodrigo's hit song “Good 4 U” Originally, the song was only credited to Rodrigo and her producer Dan Nigro, but the Paramore pair have been added to the track as songwriters in recognition of its interpolation of the 2007 song Misery Business. Last month, Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff and St. Vincent were added as co-writers to Rodrigo's “Deja Vu” because of its interpolation of Swift's 2019 song “Cruel Summer.” (Swift and Antonoff were already credited on Rodrigo's “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back,” which interpolates Swift's 2017 track “New Year's Day.”) “Brutal,” another song on Rodrigo's debut album Sour, has been called out for similarities with Elvis Costello & The Attractions' 1978 track “Pump It Up” – but Costello tweeted in June: “It's how rock and roll works. You take the broken pieces of another thrill and make a brand new toy. And Antonoff just released his own new record, “Take The Sadness out of Saturday Night,” his third album with the band Bleachers. It's music for driving fast down the highway—heavy on the horns, the power chords, and the emotions. But, like his fellow New Jerseyan Bruce Springsteen, Antonoff tells intensely personal stories in his anthems. In the latest episode—which was recorded approximately 400 days into the COVID-19 global pandemic—Mara B. Antonoff, MD, joins Dr. Varghese to discuss how the pandemic has disrupted every aspect of personal and professional life, including the ability to recruit the best and brightest to the field of cardiothoracic surgery. During the last year, many departments, divisions, and programs have had to quickly transition and “robustly” implement novel techniques and technology as travel restrictions remained the norm. What best practices have emerged? Dr. Antonoff shares what the authors uncovered in a literature review and offers advice on how programs should embrace the opportunities to innovate and engage in the virtual domain. In this episode you will hear:   (06:59) In this week’s news segment, an article from Bloomberg, “The Coming College Enrollment Bust”, by Justin Fox. Economists predict that there will be shifts in enrollment numbers by the second half of the 2020s. There are indications that the top 50 elite schools will have more potential students than they do now, where community colleges and regional 4-year schools will face the more significant declines. We discuss why the college admissions community is treating this predicted demographic decline as a category 5 hurricane. We highlight the work of Nathan Grawe, an economist whose original work is being lauded as a breakthrough in understanding how Demographics impact higher education.     ( 23:30) We are in chapter 94 of 171 Answers and we describe the cost of attendance within two main categories, and Mark explains what Cost of Attendance is and why it is important exactly what it is. Mark explains that it is not only important to know what the school lists as its,  “cost of attendance” but also what your customized cost of attendance is for you. Mark recommends the following tool to use to compare aid awards from one school to another, but also to make sure that every item in the cost of attendance is being factored in. Compare your Aid Awards Calculator- We also discuss breathtaking research by U-Aspire and the New American foundation that shows that widespread inaccuracies and omissions are very common in the aid awards that students receive from college. That link for a summary of their findings is our also our Recommended Resource of the week. We discuss the various components of how cost of attendance is calculated and we show how the numbers can vary drastically from one student to another based on factors like lifestyle.   (41:37) This week’s question is from Kisha, a mom from Wayne, Indiana. She asks Mark to clarify ‘rules’ that she has heard about relating to paying out of state tuition in certain areas. .    Mark answers Kisha’s question but he has a much broader conversation about reciprocity agreements. This conversation answers questions such as: 1) What are reciprocity agreements 2) Why do colleges establish these agreements 3) Are they in other states besides Indiana and Ohio 4) How can you find out if you are eligible for one of these agreements 5) Where do you find these agreements? (50:54) Mark kicks-off his interview with best-selling author and college admissions expert Steven Antonoff in: Debunking the myth that there are only 20 great colleges, Part 1 Steven shares his background and how he got interested in college admissions He describes the three books he wrote He explains why the University of Denver is taking off and becoming such a great University Steven talks about the history, evolution, growth, respect and challenges in the relatively new career of Independent College Counseling We introduce our topic, “Debunking the myth that there are only 20 great colleges” and Dr. Antonoff shares the consequences of this myth.     (57:45) Mark’s recommended resource of the week is . This executive summary highlights the eight key findings of this comprehensive study. The study looked at the inconsistency and inaccuracies that abound in the financial aid awards that students receive. The other resource we highlighted in our discussion about “The Coming College Enrollment Bust” is Nathan Grawe’s momentous book,   (01:10:31) College Spotlight: University Puget Sound   Don't forget to send your questions related to any and every facet of the college process to: questions@yourcollegeboundkid.com If you enjoy our podcast, would you please do us a favor and share our podcast both verbally and on social media? Her leadership was instrumental in building one of the most successful products and businesses at Microsoft, and helping SharePoint navigate the shift to the cloud. While at Microsoft, she founded the Step Up Program, designed to increase the number of women in senior management roles by helping women become stronger candidates for these roles. Lauren studied Rhetoric and Political Science at the University of California at Berkeley. Here are the highlights of our conversation with our guest:Lauren has surprised herself when she ended up in software as she thought she was going to be a civil rights lawyer. But as she thought about the problems that we encounter in technology, she felt that she can make the world a better place if she can solve these problems so people can use technology to get things done in their lives. She attributes her attitude of going out there in the world, taking on the challenges as you can and fight for the things you believe in to her mother, fighting for what was right. As Senior Vice President of Presence & Commerce at GoDaddy, the job was supposedly pretty straightforward: they help people make websites. But when she got there, it was way more than that. The group had a whole portfolio of tools designed to help customers establish their businesses online. Website builder, online store, SEO products, listings product, etc. Immediately she learned the disparate teams were stretched too thin. A key change she implemented was to address the platform it as a singular customer experience rather than a portfolio of products. One experience which helps people get online and create a holistic experience to guide them through their journey.GoDaddy is known for domains but they are more than that. They can present a whole range of solutions that they are likely looking for and this is what they are trying to showcase in their project, GoCentral. It’s a suite of capabilities which include a website, but just as importantly, also the things which come after making a website: managing your social profiles, engaging customers through email marketing and the whole nine yards.Bringing individual pieces which are currently in silos to work in concert together is one of the challenges that their company is currently facing and making use of data to understand what is working and what’s not is key. If you can use data to measure whether something is effective, you have the most powerful tool. How do you know which hypothesis to prioritize, how do you know which one is worth testing or not? You can use inputs to get ideas and use an agile methodology which is hyper targeted and placed in a controlled testing environment before rippling it out to other areas and environments. Dip your toe in the water and if it works, double down on it.

YEEEHAAAAAAAAAA!!! “What’s all the fussin’ about Shane?” -You People Well, I’ll tell you. We made it. We did it. We didn’t get fired (yet). It’s been a year since we started doing this damn thing, and Ryan even brought in a bottle of bubbly to commemorate the occasion. So in order to celebrate our first 365 days on ONEOFUS.NET we decided to do a supersized mixtape show for you guys. A mixtape show is pretty much the same as a regular show, only instead of just discussing one album, we all pick videos to surprise each other with, and alternate until no man is left alive. Or something like that. Also it was supposed to tie in with Memorial Day, but we couldn’t even get our shit together enough to even do that. Regardless, we think it’s a pretty amusing show and we hope you do too. And now the Players: KEVIN NEWSUM: Bleachers: I Wanna Get Better Is there anything that Jack Antonoff writes that isn’t anthemic? That word made a repeat appearance as we discussed this track and its corresponding video, wherein Antonoff plays an erstwhile therapist who lives in a terrible apartment building and dates (or did once), a girl who brought her own lamp over. Whatever happened to toothbrushes? Old Dirty Bastard: Shimmy Shimmy Ya One of the miracles of the internet that has since broken out is the marrying of ODB’s Shimmy Shimmy Ya (also seen in the opening scene of Knocked Up) to video of Dr. Teeth from The Muppets. It’s remarkable, and if you’ve not seen it go find the internet (oh, you’re here already!) and view. Beyond that, this was my take on soundtracking the Hip Hop Pool Party. Perfect for those who like it raw, whatever that means. Fatboy Slim: Weapon Of Choice You could make the argument that Norman Cook’s Weapon Of Choice here is a uniquely charismatic Christopher Walken. When this video hit the airwaves back in the day, seeing Walken’s giant forehead out of character, instead of reflecting his formal dance training, turned heads. We also talk about how Norman Cook / Fatboy Slim was once in the Housemartins, which some found surprising. ## RYAN NEWSUM ## George Clinton: Atomic Dog Clinton, of Parliament/Funkadelic fame, brought us this genius nugget of 8-bit (seriously, check out the video) wonder, Atomic Dog. Better known now for the legions (lesions?) of samples it spawned, this song nevertheless brought funk to the ‘burbs. Soundtrack to the time I totally “frenched” a girl next to a Joust video game when I was 11. Cheap Trick: She’s Tight This was my jam when I was hitting up my local skating rink as a fifth-grader. I distinctly recall requesting it from the (probably 17-year-old) DJ, and his reply, “Aren’t you a little young for that?” Yes, yes I was, because I had absolutely no idea that “She’s Tight” had a sexual connotation. Not so subtle on the video, though. Proud that Cheap Trick was my first for-real concert experience, even if it was at Astroworld. Gene: Olympian Ah yes, Gene. Not Morrissey. I repeat, not Morrissey. Totally picked this song because Shane is such a Smiths/Morrissey geek that I knew I’d get an intriguing reaction, and sure enough, he didn’t disappoint. Totally solid song, and this band would so totally not exist were it not for Morrissey/Marr, et al. ## SHANE BARTELL ## Falco:Rock Me Amadeus Well I went with a theme this time, starting with a video in the 80’s, continuing through to the 90’s, and Aughts. First up, I just thought everybody needed to be reminded of the genius that is(was) Falco. Well, this is FUCKING genius. However there was never a proper video releases with English lyrics (or we sure as shit couldn’t find one) so we bounced around a few. All worth the effort of finding on-line. The same thing can be said, nay, SHOUTED AT THE TOP OF ONE’S LUNGS about… Chavez: Break Up Your Band which is my favorite video of the 90’s. It just can’t be explained. Much the same as… Britney Spears:Toxic Very confusing. Still holds up in the lascivious eye candy department though. ### Coming Up ### OK! Hope you guys enjoy this show, we certainly enjoyed making it. Next time another curve ball…Mark Couvillion (producer Mark) hijacks our show and picks all the music we have to listen to. Until then…

In Episode 155 of Taylor Talk: The Taylor Swift Podcast, the hosts marvel at the masterpiece that is “Out of the Woods,” a song off Taylor’s upcoming album, 1989, co-written by Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff.
