It's unoriginal to blame negativity towards Batman: Arkham Knight on the batmobile, but hear me out. While most (all?) complained about the batmobile from a direct gameplay standpoint--how it felt and the repetitive missions--my complaint is an indirect one: I think the batmobile ruined Arkham Knight by forcing Rocksteady to change the way other aspects of the game controlled in order to accommodate the batmobile controls. It may seem like a small complaint to most and something I should've have "just gotten used to," but I never got used to the small changes in how Arkham Knight controlled and that ultimately ruined the game for me.

Batman video games got a resurgence with 2009's Arkham Asylum, continued to be critically acclaimed with 2011's Arkham City, and then started to become divisive with 2013's Arkham Origins and especially 2015's Arkham Knight. Since Arkham Origins takes place during Christmas, we've chosen to dive into that one. Arkham Origins seems to be the odd one out, the black sheep, when discussing this series, and we don't understand why- if the reason for disliking this game is that it doesn't star Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill...you're going to have to find another reason. Winter is over, the birds are chirping, and the weather is changing - but the Beat of the Month marches on! No wait, March was last month. In today's Daily Fix: Footage of a cancelled Batman game by Monolith have been uploaded to a thread on X, but this isn't some run-of-the-mill Batman game, it was set in (or at least heavily inspired by) Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, AND it used the Nemesis system. Yes, the groundbreaking NPC system from Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was originally meant for a Batman game. This new Batman game would have run concurrently with the Arkham games, and Warner Bros. eventually decided to focus on the LOTR franchise, leaving Rocksteady to do their thing with Batman with what eventually would be Arkham Knight. The Nemesis system would be retooled for Shadow of Mordor, which spawned a sequel, Shadow of War. In other news, a new study has been released with data pointing to gamers preferring older games to newer ones. Games like GTA 5 and Fortnite apparently dominated gamers' playing times despite the release of high-profile titles like Tears of the Kingdom and Baldur's Gate 3. And finally, Ninja Theory believes gamers actually want shorter games.

Hello All! Another week, another rant, but not as heated. As you can tell by the title its about Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, and boy am I not happy. We also had a state of play from Sony, Microsoft gutted Blizzard, and Mass Effect is headed to Destiny. Meanwhile The Thunderbolts loses several stars, Supergirl is found, Denis Villeneuve has plans for Dune 3. Also, there was an issue with my microphone this week, so that will explain the poor audio quality.

This podcast is vengeance. It is the Knight. It. Is. Batman! Batman Arkham Knight to be exact. Clint has been a longtime fan of this game and the series, and Bryan had been looking for a reason to complete his journey through the Arkham trilogy, so together they ventured out into the cold, autumnal Gotham air and recorded a podcast about what its like to inhabit Batman in Arkham Knight. Batman is a character they both have a lot of fondness (and some criticism for), and this outting being the most maximal of Batman video game experiences, heightens those affections, and flaws, to their apex. There is a bit of something for everyone in Arkham Knight: action adventure, brawler, exploration, driving, puzzling, vehicular combat, and all of it is fairly well integrated as part of the whole experience. We're now over 7 years out from this title's troubled launch on PC, and playing it on modern hardware was truly a visual and auditory delight.As a quick note: We played and recorded for this podcast just a few days before Kevin Conroy, the voice actor for Batman in this and many other appearances, suddenly passed away unexpectedly. He was a familiar voice in our collective memories from earlier days and helped make these games, and Batman in general, a cultural force over so many years.
