fWotD Episode 2846: Benjamin F. McAdoo Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 18 February 2025 is Benjamin F. McAdoo.Benjamin Franklin McAdoo Jr. (October 29, 1920 – June 18, 1981) was an American architect. McAdoo designed a number of residential, civic, and commercial structures in the Seattle area in a modernist aesthetic influenced by the Northwest Regional style. Born in Pasadena, California, he attended school in Southern California, where he was inspired by the work of Paul R. Williams and began to pursue architectural training. After working as a draftsman for local architectural firms and the Army Corps of Engineers, he pursued his Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Washington in Seattle, graduating in 1946. He became the first licensed African-American architect in the state of Washington, and after a brief period designing remodels and alterations, he began to receive commissions to design private residences.Favorable coverage in The Seattle Times by architecture journalist Margery Phillips boosted his career. A residence designed by McAdoo in Burien was declared the "Home of the Year" by The Seattle Times in association with the American Institute of Architects. After designing a number of low-income houses and apartments throughout the 1950s, including around eighty of his single-family "Houses of Merit", he was hired by the Agency for International Development to design modular houses in Jamaica. He returned to the United States after eighteen months in Jamaica and briefly worked for the Department of State and the General Services Administration in Washington, D. C., where he aided Edward Durell Stone in designing the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He returned to Seattle in 1964, where he pursued public and civic architectural commissions. In addition to his architectural work, he participated in the NAACP, hosted a weekly radio show on racial issues for several years, and unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Washington House of Representatives. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:55 UTC on Tuesday, 18 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Benjamin F. What's the return on government funding for research? There are a few places in the academic literature you can look to for insight. Jones and Summers (2021) uses a hypothetical thought experiment to make the case that, on average, every dollar of R&D spent probably generates several dollars in benefits via its long-run impact on economic growth (see What are the returns to R&D? for more discussion). But that result applies only to R&D in general, government and non-government, bundled together. Is government funding above or below this average? This approach can't say. Moreover, while I find it a compelling thought experiment, at some point we probably want to check the results against data. Fortunately, a set of recent papers help us do that. This podcast is an audio read through of the (initial version of the) article Government funding for R&D and productivity growth, originally published on New Things Under the Sun.Articles mentionedJones, Benjamin F., and Lawrence H. The gang discusses two papers that look at functional morphology in extinct groups. The first paper looks at tooth replacement patterns in an Ornithischian dinosaur, and the second paper studies the shell articulation of Rafinesquina to unravel a long-standing mystery. Meanwhile, James has questions about taste, Amanda forgets protocol, and Curt indulges in his fixations.   Up-Goer Five (Curt Edition): The friends talk about two papers that look at how animals did things a long time ago. The first paper looks at a group of big angry animals that are liked a lot and make their way into movies. This paper looks at how the teeth of some of these animals would grow over time. This group of big angry animals also does a lot of cool things with their teeth over a long time because they move from eating animals to eating things that do not move and make their own food from the sun. The big angry animals that they look at have lot of these animals from a lot of different ages so they can see how the teeth get changed as they grew up. What they see is that the way that the teeth grow in changes as the animal grows older. They also find that the number of times that new teeth come in has changed many times in this group of animals. The second paper looks at a group of animals with two hard parts on either side that sits and eats food from the water. This group of animals has really made people confused for a long time because of how the hard parts come together, which could make it so that the animals could not get water inside to eat and would instead get a lot of ground and die. But this group of animals is really good at what it does because it is found all around the world. So how did these things eat? The paper shows that these animals could move their hard parts a lot more than we ever thought. Also, they show that they could move them pretty quick, and could even push out water so quickly that they could maybe move a little bit if they get covered in the ground.   References: Hu, Jinfeng, et al. I'm fascinated by Asylums, most are great and help their patients but so many fall to overcrowding and no funding which result in terrible conditions, care, violence and multiple deaths. Here is another one of those in Exeter, Rhode Island. The Ladd school had many names but always seemed destined to fail. It was first known as The Exeter School for the Feeble Minded to help rehabilitate "inmates" to return to society. That never happened and "inmates" were forced to live in filthy conditions and there was 1 doctor and no other staff had proper medical training. So many souls are trapped here and they believe they will never leave. The buildings have been torn down but the activity and spirits remain. So travel with me down a dark road to Exeter, Rhode Island (Also very haunted!!) to discover the travesties of the school. “U” is for Unionists. Unionists in South Carolina were anti-secessionists and supporters of the federal Union in the decades prior to the Civil War—especially during the Nullification Crisis of the 1830s and the secession crises of 1850 and 1860. Unionist strongholds were in white majority districts such as Greenville, Horry, Pickens, and Spartanburg. Although unable to prevent the passage of the Ordinance of Nullification, they created a statewide network of militia units that were in contact with President Andrew Jackson. In part, because of determined Unionist opposition—and the threat of internal armed conflict—the nullifiers sought compromise rather than confrontation with the federal government. The rise of abolitionism and fears of its influence weakened Unionists in South Carolina. Among the leading Unionists were Joel R. Poinsett, James L. Petigru, and Benjamin F. Perry.

Every beginning starts with an ending. This is one of the principles of Pendulum theory. And the middle is always in the middle. When our fight with King George ended in 1783, thirteen powerless colonies became “The United States.” This was the beginning of the first America; 3 million citizens clinging to the eastern edge of a vast, uncharted wilderness. Truly, “a land of opportunity.” Eighty years later – 1863 – we were in the middle of a war between ourselves. (1861-1865) And July 2nd of that year – the middle day in the 3-day Battle of Gettysburg – was also the middle day of the middle year in our 5-year Civil War. Fourteen years after the Civil War ended, Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington headed west to capture the ending of the Wild West. Their paintings and sculptures of those ending days now sell for millions of dollars. Nineteen years after Charlie and Fred headed West, https://www.pbs.org/tpt/slavery-by-another-name/themes/progressivism/ (Teddy Roosevelt) led his “rough riders” up a hill during the Spanish-American War. His arrival on that hilltop signaled the end of the Wild West, the end of the Spanish Empire, and the end of the first America.1 As I said earlier, every beginning starts with an ending. The second America began when Teddy became President in 1901. This second America was a land of progress and achievement, a World Power, a country of cars and department stores and Coca-Cola, electric lights, running water, and houses everywhere. Do you remember when Whitney Houston sang, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”? America's memory of the Civil War was more recent than that when they elected Teddy Roosevelt. One of Teddy's first official actions was to invite Booker T. Washington, a black educator, to dinner at the White House. White-hot rage was ignited across the South. According to historian Deborah Davis, “There was hell to pay… This story did not go away. An assassin was hired to go to Tuskegee to kill Booker T. Washington. (Facebook, Twitter, TikTok) 2013 was also the halfway point in the upswing of society's pendulum toward the zenith of our current “We” cycle. The halfway point is where we begin to take a good thing too far. In 2013 we shifted from “fighting together for the common good” to simply “fighting together.” Western Civilization2 has done this every 80 years for the past 3 millennia. When I was in Richmond, Virginia, I fell in love with the history and legends of the city. Rooted in history, the city is known for the train that used to deliver goods through town and the James River. One of the first urban legends that I fell in love with is the story of the Richmond Vampire. In 1925, the 231 locomotive was caught in the Church Hill tunnel when it collapsed. A few people made it out, but when Benjamin F. Mosby got out, the site was one that was horrific! On lookers said his flesh was burning and his teeth looked like fangs. Thus beginning the story of the Richmond Vampire. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lattes-and-legends/support

Doch was steckt hinter Esport.com? Esport.com soll letzten Endes die primäre Anlaufstelle für den Laien sein. Es wird ein Communityportal, welches alles zusammenfast was im Bereich des Esport passiert. Unterteilt ist es in drei große Bereiche. Education: Zum Beispiel Legaue of Legends. Sitz in Malta?!

We start with a discussion about how scarce documentation is for this blackout period of Mormon history and what that means for historiographies which cover this time period. After that, Jo tells us how we can tell if a spirit is from God or the devil, which hearkens back to his magic roots. After that we take an extract from Bloody Brigham Young’s manuscript history to follow the travel of the Twelve as they made their way closer to boarding a ship for England. After the history, we debut an exciting new segment to leak off the church and then we get into some of the church’s new face of homophobia and discuss just how new their stance on the LGBTQ community really is…. On this episode, our scope lands from mid-January to mid-March, focusing on three separate but equal locations. Kirtland, Ohio was the center of dissent and violent mob action against Jo and his loyalists. Along with a few other families, Jo and Rigdon were forced to flee Kirtland, leaving the main church building on fire in their wake and arriving in Far West, Missouri as a temporary safe haven. Things weren’t well in Far West either. The trusted church leaders held a tribunal and excommunicated or put on hold the Whitmers, Oliver Cowdery, and W. W. Phelps until Jo and Rigdon get into town. The saints are faced with some hard decisions in the coming year. Do they stay in Kirtland and follow a breakoff faction; or follow the one true prophet, Joseph Smith, to Missouri, where saints are frequently shot or chased from their homes? We wrap up the discussion with a topical subject currently rising in relevancy out of Nevada. The Church of the Devil may share a bit more in common with Mormonism than we initially perceived… Show Links: Website http://nakedmormonismpodcast.com Twitter @NakedMormonism Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Naked-Mormonism/370003839816311 Patreon http://patreon.com/nakedmormonism Outro music by Jason Comeau http://aloststateofmind.com/ Show Artwork http://weirdmormonshit.com/ Voicemail Line (864)Nake-dMo (625-3366)               Links: Manuscript History of Brigham Young http://www.boap.org/LDS/Early-Saints/MSHBY.html Autobiography of Benjamin F. On this episode, we jump back into the historical timeline! We start off with the wiles of a Michael H. Chandler, and how he made $2400 off Joe's fascination with ancient artifacts, then, the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants are voted in as scripture by every member of the church. After that, Big Daddy Cheese is given a living stipend and fees for giving patriarchal blessings, and we talk about another first vision account, only this one is taken from Joe's own diary. To finish out the episode, we read a couple of autobiographical accounts covering the end of 1835, and leading into 1836, the second of which takes us into talking about the first real sex-scandal we have good evidence for, the one between 18 year-old Fanny Alger, and 30 year-old Joseph Smith. We don't run short on crazy for this episode, so strap in and enjoy! Historian Bev Tyler of the Three Village Historical Society Bev Tyler, historian with the Three Village Historical Society, walks us through the true story of the Culper Spy Ring that operated out of Setauket and Manhattan during the Revolutionary War. Made up of a small tight-knit group of friends and relatives, the Ring provided valuable information on British activities that helped George Washington outmaneuver and out-spy a much more powerful enemy. All of this was conducted in occupied territory, a Long Island beset by British troops with no love for the population they were meant to protect and raiders from the Sound who preyed on Loyalist and Patriot alike. We also discuss the AMC series Turn which depicts a fictionalized version of the Ring. Find out where the story strays from the history and which facts and characters stay true to the historical record. From Abraham Woodhull to Robert Townsend, Anna Strong, and Caleb Brewster, find out what they were really like and their fate after the war. Turn starts its second season in the spring of 2015.
