Today we're talking with Jeffrey Ricketts, who, in July of 2022, took ownership of Mullen's Folly in Calvert, Maryland. Mullen's Folly is a log house located in northeastern Cecil County, Maryland. It was built possibly before 1789. It operated as a general store from 1789-1823 servicing the surrounding community with a wide variety of goods sourced in Philadelphia and Wilmington. After 1823, the building was converted into a house. From 1859-2022 the house was owned by four generations of the Berriker-FitzGerald family, until it was sold to Jeffrey, who is currently restoring the building to its late 18th-century appearance, and is rediscovering all of its lost history. Maryland Forests Association "Faces of Forestry" features Senator Bailey this month. He grew up on his grandparent's 120-acre farm on the water in Southern Maryland. ~From the crops, to horses, to time spent with his grandfather and father hunting and fishing, farm and forest land shaped Bailey's formative years and his conservationist mindset. He eventually purchased the 60-acre farm that adjoins his parents', making the family-farm connection even stronger by building the next generation of stewards and conservationists with his children.~ ~His goal of sharing these natural resource wonders with his son and daughter and walking in the woods with them, comes as no surprise when considering how he grew up. The senator's father was an agronomist who went to the University of Maryland, while his mother was a 4H agent in Cecil County. Being connected to the soil beneath our feet and the farms and forest that spring from it is just part of the Bailey DNA.~ ~"I felt at home" working in forestry, says Bailey, thoroughly enjoying the work of woodland management and seeing all the different parts of Maryland while meeting the hardworking loggers, foresters, and landowners across the varied terrain of the state. Working with property owners to improve their woodlands through a harvest and showing value to proper forest management was one of many rewarding parts of the senator's time in forestry. Helping a farmer with forest land know that they can have a harvest and that letting trees grow is "like having money in the bank" just re-enforced the idea of sustainable, regenerative land management and conservation for the future senator.~ ~There were bigger things ahead for Bailey to make an even broader impact on our natural resources and protecting and conserving those resources. Beginning in 1987, the Department of Natural Resources Police became his home for 30 years, where he rose from cadet to supervisor of the Covert Operations Unit in 2007. During his time there, Bailey led game warden training for Maryland, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Virginia wardens. He trained his fellow officers in waterfowl ID and shared his insider tip of carrying the beans of the Kentucky coffeetree for good luck. Wouldn't you know it, he and his father — with coffeetree beans in their pockets — went on a turkey hunt, and both came home with a turkey.~ ~Extending beyond the Natural Resources Police, that education and advocacy for protecting our land and its resources continued through his efforts with the International Conservation Chiefs Academy starting in 2017. "We all have a goal of protecting these resources and passing them on to the next generation," says Bailey. He passes those lessons on to natural resource officers from across the globe through the academy, working to educate and direct the funding and required action for depleted or endangered resources in the right way.~ ~Bailey's advocacy work involves working with Hunters of MD and Maryland Legislative's Sportsmen Caucus much closer to home. He has been a member of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC) since 2019, advocating for farmers and agriculture. Going from the natural resources realm to the General Assembly, Officer Bailey became Senator Bailey, representing District 29 for Calvert & St. Mary's Counties.~ Voice By Gordon Collier in Introduction: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jgordoncollier/ Spring by Ikson www.soundcloud.com/ikson Music promoted by Audio Library www.youtu.be/5WPnrvEMIdo --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talkingforests/support

Thomas McCreary lived in Maryland’s Cecil County in the 19th Century and, in the 1840s and 1850s, he became widely known as a slave catcher, a man who would cross into the free state of Pennsylvania to nab black men, women and children he suspected of being runaway slaves. Sometimes they were; sometimes they were not. At a time of heightened tensions over slavery, McCreary’s exploits were decried by abolitionists and praised by those who defended slavery and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Cecil County historian Milt Diggins tells the story of McCreary and Rachel and Elizabeth Parker, the black sisters who were born free yet abducted by McCreary from Pennsylvania and taken to the Baltimore slave market. Diggins’ book, “Stealing Freedom Along the Mason-Dixon Line,” also tells of white neighbors of the Parkers who traveled to Baltimore to demand their release and McCreary’s prosecution.Links:https://jhupbooks.press.jhu.edu/content/stealing-freedom-along-mason-dixon-line

So holy hell were do i start.. What a great weekend.. An awesome ride down to Cecil County Friday night in the pouring ass rain.. Like literally 70-80 miles of driving rain.. The Mid Atlantic .90 group is without a doubt one the best Drag Racing Associations going. They got in 3 time shots. And then pretty much went right into eliminations.. The weather was kind of iffy all day.. But they got it all in.. Including the Top 8 Race. I took a bunch of pics.. And also did a bunch of video.. As well as Rob did also. I would like to give a big thank you to Bob and Penny.. They are so much more than just part of our Show. They have become my second family. And they mean the world to me. I want to say a big thanks to Robert Keister. We may not always agree and I fully admit my mouth may get me into trouble sometimes, but him and I are like brothers and it is all good in the end. And huge thanks to Mr and Mrs. Barbato for letting EJB and I raid their fridge for soda at dinner time. And of course.. Jeff Kundratic. Who is more than a Business Partner.. Both him and his daughter have become part of my life. And he has become a great adviser to me. The other person who has become one of my most closest friends.. Who also keeps me in line when I want to voice my opinion. She is bold, She is Brash. I wouldn't change one thing about her in any way shape or form. All of the racers in the Mid Atlantic .90 Association, You are the best. And last but not least.. The girl who helped make me realize its ok to hug..lol Amanda Boicesco. One of the best.. If not the best .90 Racer on the East Coast. Keep on killin' girl! You are amazing. SO with that being said..

Milt Diggins tells the story of Thomas McCreary, a slave catcher from Cecil County, Maryland. Reviled by some, proclaimed a hero by others, McCreary first drew public attention in the late 1840s for a career that peaked a few years after passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Living and working as he did at the midpoint between Philadelphia, an important center for assisting fugitive slaves, and Baltimore, a major port in the slave trade, his story illustrates in raw detail the tensions that arose along the border between slavery and freedom just prior to the Civil War. McCreary and his community provide a framework to examine slave catching and kidnapping in the Baltimore-Wilmington-Philadelphia region and how those activities contributed to the nation's political and visceral divide.Milt Diggins is an independent scholar, public historian, and lecturer. He is a former editor of the Cecil Historical Journal and a frequent contributor to local publications.Writers LIVE programs are supported in part by The Miss Howard Hubbard Adult Programming Fund.

Toby Cooling is my grandmother's cousin on my mother's side. I've been wanting to get him on the podcast for a long time. He's lived the life of five men and has seen it all. I got to catch up with him during one of his returns back home to Cecil County. Master Cooling founded the Order of Isshin Ryu on January 15, 1971 in an effort to keep his word to Master Shimabuku, who asked him to ". . .go back to the States and teach good Isshin Ryu for me, make happy family." Toby was nice enough to sit down with me at the dojo he built and started in Elkton, MD. We go through the early years, opinions on MMA, gun control and anecdotes on life. A fun chat that will be continued next week. Thanks to Steve Martin on the music. Thanks to Musical Targets on YouTube for the outro. SANCHEZ sits down with his great uncle Flint Sheldon for a two-parter that might turn into a three-parter. SANCHEZ updates Flint on what he's involved in, last week's Delaware bee swarms and gets his musical preferences for this week's show. They discuss where Flint was the day the old C&D Canal lift bridge got hit, Chesapeake City history and Flint's childhood memories. Was Flint the first Cecil County resident diagnosed with Polio? How did he cope with it? Hear about this and more on this week's DMTAM! Thanks to Glenn Miller on the music. @DMTAMpod on Twitter
