I met him for a chat at his home, overlooking the lower lake on Corrib located just outside Galway City.We chat about Connemara sea trout, his view on salmon farming and this seasons very good run of salmon coming into the lough. He also talks of something I have a passion for, Ferox. He tells of their spawning habits and no matter what part of the lake they reside most head for the one river.A fascinating chat from someone with a wealth of knowledge and love of sea trout and salmon.

Austin takes us through how to take those errant thoughts you have at 3am and turn them into publishable content worldwide, with a spattering of anecdotes throughout. Sparkd, a full-service AI company based out of Dublin are representing Ireland's growing AI talent pool as part of FEROX. Members of the Sparkd team attended a partner meeting in Tampere, Finland to officially launch the project in September. FEROX is a 3-year HORIZON2020 research project funded by the European Commission. The project is made up of 9 tech-oriented organisations and academic partners developing a new way of monitoring workers. Wild berries are one of Finland's greatest exports. Approximately 500 million kg of berries grow naturally there every year. But less than 10% of the wild berry crop is harvested from the country's forests. The main challenge in collecting wild berries lies in manual forest harvesting, namely pickers' working conditions. Due to the short season, the majority of the work is conducted by foreign workers with limited knowledge of the language, culture, and landscape. To better manage and protect these workers, the FEROX project was born. The project will employ autonomous drones equipped with various sensors to acquire data, build 3D models of the forests and accurately predict location, amount, and types of berries. The collected data will be used to build AI models to help workers locate berries and optimise their operations. In addition, FEROX will provide wild berry pickers with navigation and locating services and physical support to improve their working conditions. The holistic solution of FEROX will contribute to the overall safety of the workers by automatically monitoring the pickers and providing aid where it is needed. Sparkd will spearhead all AI activities throughout the development of the project. Commenting on the launch of FEROX, Dr. Luca Marchesotti, founder and CEO of Sparkd said: “We are thrilled to be a part of the FEROX team. The ability to extract insights from drone footage makes this project particularly special for us. “The technical outcomes are huge. Drones are creating incredible opportunities in multiple markets like agriculture, health and safety, and manufacturing. Combining drone technology with state of the art of computer vision and machine learning algorithms is a game-changer. We are positive that the technology we're working on will be a hot niche in the future”. For more information on the FEROX project, visit here. See more stories here. John Tejada on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/28/22 About John Tejada - Normally associated with his peers in techno from Detroit, Europe and elsewhere, John Tejada has embraced electronic music as a personal frontier, expanding on his resume as a techno recording artist as producer, remixer, DJ, and label owner. Known for crafting a brand of subtle, musical techno, his recorded output ranges across tempo and genre lines, from chilled out affairs with spacious arrangements to pulsating, densely layered, deeply energetic tracks that work magnificently in the hands of DJs as well as on the home stereo. John Tejada was born in Vienna, Austria on April 21, 1974. His parents, both professional classical musicians (his mother an opera singer and father a conductor) began his early piano training at the age of 4. In the summer of 1982, John would move with his mother to her place of birth, Los Angeles. It was that summer at the age of 8 another instrument would catch his eye, the drums. Teaching himself to play along to classic rock music, John quickly learned his way around the drum set (an instrument he still plays to this day in his I'm Not A Gun project).  Everything changed however when he got his first taste of early 80's hip hop music. The impact of those early productions and electronic experimentation was very strong. Soon after, at the age of 12 John was given his first set of turntables and a mixer. He wanted to figure out everything he was hearing DJs do at that time. His first gigs came at the age of 12 for his own school, DJing his school dances. Soon after his fascination with DJing began his fascination with production began. Just as he was completely determined to learn the tricks of local DJs, he now wanted to know how the music was made. His introduction came around the age of 15, when he acquired his first looping delay. Soon after came his first workstation, an Ensoniq EPS sampler. This opened up a whole new world of possibilities. John spent every part of his day honing his craft. In 1991, while still in high school, John was already recording his first productions. He was also involved in college radio, even though he was just a junior in high school. John had a spot on “The Fly ID Show” with DJ Rob One. John produced the show's first record for Rob and also went on to do some hip hop production on Ruthless Records. It was during this time that he met his long time collaborator and best friend Arian Leviste.  The two met at a hip hop recording session in ‘91. John, already tired of the hip hop scene and where it was going, spent hours talking to Arian about acid house, techno, ambient house and everything they seemed to have in common. The two agreed they would meet weekly to compose material. It took some time before they would release any music, but in 1994 they pressed up their own single and that started a chain reaction of releases. John and Arian during this time also were accepted into CalArts' (California Institute for the Arts) electronic music program, but both decided not to attend to hone their craft on their own. Soon after, John enjoyed a series of releases on European labels like A13, Multiplex, and Generations R&S. In the fall of 1996 he started his own label, Palette Recordings as an outlet to release his own productions without having anyone tell him how to do it. The demand for his music continued to grow and labels such as Ferox, Sino, Mosaic, Immigrant, Plug Research, Pokerflat and 7th City all released Tejada 12”s. John began traveling internationally in ‘97 to showcase his DJ skills around the globe, traveling to more than 25 countries and playing various clubs and festivals around the world. Festivals included Movement (formerly The Detroit Electronic Music Festival), Sonar Festival (in Spain and Tokyo), Dance Valley (Netherlands), Sync Festival (Greece), Mutek Mexico, as well as internationally known spaces such as Fabric (London), Yellow (Tokyo), Rex Club (Paris), The Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles) and many more. In 1999, John met classical jazz guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto, which was the beginning of another musical frontier. The two had a similar meeting as John and Arian had years before and began talking about making music. The project I'm Not A Gun was born and signed soon after to Berlin-based City Center Offices. This project would bring back John's own training as a drummer while also trying his hand at the guitar. The project became a mix of John's own electronic productions along with Takeshi's professional guitar playing and John's drumming. The project has enjoyed great reviews and success the world over and the duo has performed live in LA, Japan and Germany. In the summer of 2004, John would - in one week - create the two songs that would catapult his techno career. The classic “Sweat On The Walls,” and “Mono On Mono” were released almost at the same time on two different labels. “Sweat” was released on Pokerflat and “Mono On Mono” on Palette. Together the two records sold over 23,000 copies on vinyl. This lead to the equally successful follow up singles “Paranoia,” “Mind Bend” (with more recent collaborator and Palette-signing, Justin Maxwell) “Voyager,” and “The End Of It All.” With dozens of singles and remixes to his credit, he has also produced full-length albums for Playhouse, Palette, Plug Research, deFocus, Moods and Grooves, Immigrant and A13. Sometimes, happy accidents happen. Due to a communication mix-up (most likely Derek's fault), the Spoop Bois with guest Andrew Parker (of "Crypta" podcast and "Ghosters" podcast) discuss 1980's "Cannibal Holocaust" directed by Ruggero Deodato, 1981's "Cannibal Ferox" directed by Umberto Lenzi, and the Italian cannibal horror genre as a whole. They compare and contrast the movies from an exploitation and storytelling stand point, and they examine the idea of the jungle itself being horrific. They also talk about what makes these films art, the insane production and marketing, the legal troubles and bans, among many other aspects of the movies and genre. Andrew wants to invite you to dinner. Aaron believes in the survival of the fittest. Derek contemplates who the real cannibals are. Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords @xdb Kosta Athanassiadis, known professionally as XDB, has grown a well-respected career through a slew of fantastic releases on well admired labels for the past 15 years. Of Greek descent but born and raised in Germany, Kosta has the background and experience to be a trusted figure whether making music or chosing music as a dj. Having worked in record stores and radio while fine tuning his djing skills thru the 1990s, a new creative seed grew - Kosta started to make his own productions. This led to starting up his own label named Metrolux in 2006 where his music was featured front and center. Quality over quantity was a must for the output of the label and his own release schedule. His debut ‘Jackintosh EP’ and the following ‘Descap EP’ made quite the impression for those that heard them. From there, he's been popping up on some of the most praised labels in electronic music such as Sistrum, Harbour City Sorrow, Echocord, Ferox as well as Francois Kevorkian's legendary Wave Music label. His music has been described as post-Detroit but firmly european made and devoid of any one genre. A cornicopia of influences that help Kosta's music stand out in a very competitive field. As a remixer, his credits list is long and impressive. This demand from his peers is perhaps the best example that validates his talent. 2020 was a landmark year for Kosta which saw his first full length album that led to rave reviews worldwide. Personality wise, Kosta is low-key letting his music do the talking. His integrity never in doubt and love for electronic music is clear. Keeping his ear to the ground while enjoying his vast vinyl collection. For listeners, it is a true treat hearing Kosta elect tracks for the occasion when he is the dj. Technically and creatively, one of the best whose name is constantly in demand for sets and new music. Whether making new music, remixing or djing, Kosta Athanassiadiska aka XDB is one to follow.

Episode 130: The Art of the Hustle with Ferox Strategies’ CEO, Cristina Antelo

BEYOND BARRIERS

Hustle – the Urban Dictionary defines the word hustle as: “to strive headstrong and voraciously towards a goal”. Or as Anthony Iannarino clarified in his article, “The Real Meaning of the Word ‘Hustle’”, is that you work hard every single day. It means you do the things other people won’t do, and you do them with a sense of joy and purpose because you love it. In this episode, you’ll meet Cristina Antelo, a real-life example of the word “hustle”, who lives by Thomas Edison’s motto, “Everything comes to h[er] who hustles while [she] waits.” Cristina shares her life’s journey and how she learned to hustle. Cristina Antelo is a founding principal and CEO at Ferox Strategies. She has spent more than a decade representing multinational corporations with her trademark hustle at Washington’s best-known government relations firms. From Wall Street to K Street, Cristina has set herself apart as a trusted advisor, skilled advocate, and effective negotiator who isn’t afraid of long, hard work. Featured in Washingtonian magazine in “Success Stories of Washingtonians of Latino and Hispanic Descent” and identified as a "Top Lawyer," “Power Player,” and “Most Influential 40 and Under Leader” in other regional publications, Cristina provides insider advice on how public policy is created and communicated.   Highlights: [02:35] Cristina’s journey [07:03] Gaining clarity on your path & purpose [13:11] Overcoming limiting beliefs [20:15] Building your story around your strengths [25:09] Cristina’s daily success habits [28:21] Decision making techniques [33:17] Building authentic relationships [38:57] Cristina’s advice on accelerating success   Quotes: “You will always get more information out of making a mistake than if you had done nothing out of fear of failing.” – Cristina Antelo “There is not enough Latino representation in all of the places where decision-making happens as it related to policy.” - Cristina Antelo “You can teach yourself anything. It doesn't matter what you know right now, in this moment, you just have to commit to learning.” – Cristina Antelo   About Cristina Antelo: A fierce believer in Thomas Edison’s, “Everything comes to h[er] who hustles while [she] waits,” Cristina Antelo is a founding principal at Ferox Strategies. Cristina has spent more than a decade representing multinational corporations with her trademark hustle at Washington’s best-known government relations firms. From Wall Street to K Street, Cristina has set herself apart as a trusted advisor, skilled advocate, and effective negotiator who isn’t afraid of long, hard work. She began her lobbying career in 2004, immediately representing Fortune 500 clients at top-ranked, bipartisan government and public affairs firms in Washington, D.C. Her past clients include major chain retailers, spirits companies, national theme and amusement parks, pharmaceutical firms, and nutrition and wellness companies. Her policy areas of expertise include financial services, tax, trade, border security, transportation and infrastructure, and crisis management. As a founding member and former President of the Hispanic Lobbyists Association and a long stint as the interim CEO of the non- profit Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), Cristina has served as both a leader and an advocate, promoting communication, ethics, education, and bipartisanship. Before transitioning to government relations, in the early 2000s Cristina worked as a Wall Street investment banker and wealth management advisor at major Wall Street firms including Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan. She also served as a legal fellow with the Senate Democratic Steering Committee, then chaired by former Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Tom Daschle (D-SD). Today, Cristina is active in charitable work, contributing her business acumen and political savvy on the Board of Directors of the CHCI, serving under Chairman Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), as well as the board of the National Wildlife Federation's (NWF) Action Fund supporting conservation of endangered species and habitats. Cristina further serves on the finance committee for the March of Dimes' annual Gourmet Gala, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars boosting maternal and infant health worldwide. Finally, Cristina is also on the Board of Directors for her alma mater, the Brooks School in North Andover, MA, and volunteers with Common Threads, focusing on nutrition education for children. A native Spanish speaker, Cristina was born in Dallas and graduated from Georgetown University and the George Washington University Law School. She is married with two young daughters, Havana and Brooklyn, who are fiercely loyal to any client that provides toys...or snacks...or anything with glitter. Having been a fan of bands such as Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode through his formative years, Derek felt drawn to this new sound coming from Detroit, Sheffield and Leeds. Recognising the home made ‘punk’ ethos of early ‘Bleep techno’ he began to pick up second hand instruments, initially investing in a cheetah sampler and boss drum machine. Derek then set about creating his own sound, a sound that owed much to the techno pioneers, B12, the Black Dog, As One, Nexus 21 and Rhythmatic to name but a few. In 2001 Derek launched his own label "Trident Recordings" and released the "Copper Beech e.p." (the only release to date) a collection of deep soulful techno. Only 500 copies were pressed and it has since become something of a collector’s item. Subsequent releases on "Digital Soul" and "Geek Records" further cemented Carr’s place amongst a new generation of techno producers that looked to combine soul and melody with electronic dancefloor grooves. Derek Carr has built a worthy reputation for producing stunning deep techno and delivering quality DJ and Live sets across Europe. Stay Rave with #R13!

This episode follows Rob's quest for lake run coho salmon on New York's Salmon River (SRNY). Rob breaks down the differences from salmon season to steelhead season, observations on crowds, techniques seen on the river, and where he found fish. Sometimes the first cast is the best one. Its like going to the same sports venue but watching a different sport. The podcast ends with Rob's theory of steelhead being the cuckoo of the fish world.  Produced by Jason Reif  Sponsored by Hatch Outdoors

Al Ferox, also named Alessandro F., is an italian musician and producer, founder of the labels Dancefloor Killers, Kobayashi and Scream. He ran away from Italy to France at the age of 17, all that kept him going was his love for music. He got his first inspiration from his brothers vast record collection from 70’s listening bands as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Zappa, early Genesis stuff, then being profoundly inspired by the 80’s punk industrial metal, and new wave scene. End of 80’s he played bass guitar in different new wave and punk bands in France. Early 90’s he founded « X-Rated-X » an industrial metal duo inspired by Ministry, Killing Joke, NIN… and began to use samplers, sequencers and drum machines. After this experience, Al Ferox discovered techno music and the rave scene. In 1997 he founded the label Kobayashi, where he produced his first techno releases, « The dream of the headless man », « Shaved trax » and « Car crash » was his biggest hits on Kobayashi. Also he produced artists such as Vitalic, Marco Carola, Woody Mc Bride, Oscar Mulero, Stanny Franssen, Gaetano Parisio, C.Denza and more. Scream, his second label was an acid techno project where he produced four vinyl releases. In 2001 he founded « Dancefloor Killers » a Kobayashi’s subdivision, more dedicated to electro and dark techno music. The first record on DK was « VitalFerox – Absolut ep » a collaboration with Vitalic, which was a big hit. Later followed release and collaborations with the Hacker, David Carretta, Hakan Lidbo, Anibert, Krivoi Rog, Xenia Beliayeva, Jonathann Cast, Woody Mc Bride and more. booking requests, promos, demos for Kobayashi and Dancefloor Killers mail : alferoxinbox@hotmail.com Social Media Links: https://alferox.bandcamp.com/ https://www.facebook.com/alferox https://www.facebook.com/alferoxofficial https://www.facebook.com/dancefloorkillers https://www.facebook.com/kobayashirecordings
