Episode 354 features New York Mets legend Roger McDowell and coauthor Doug Feldmann as they share stories from Hot Foot: My Hijinks and Upside-Down Life with the World Champion New York Mets. Then, Jimmy Carbone joins the conversation to talk about his incredible year so far and give a preview of the upcoming Pig Island barbecue celebration. Roger McDowell and Doug Feldmann join us to discuss the book they coauthored, Hot Foot: My Hijinks and Upside-Down Life with the World Champion New York Mets.  The following is taken from the internet, "Roger McDowell dishes on everything from the New York Mets to Seinfeld in this lively new memoir.  Over the course of Roger McDowell's twelve-year career in Major League Baseball, the laughs were never in short supply. His teammates were always on guard, careful not to become the next victim of his dreaded "Hot Foot." McDowell's fun-loving nature, however, was matched only by his tenacity on the pitching mound. Praised as a "battler" and a "gamer" by those same pranked teammates, Roger was all business when he went out between the lines. Priding himself on toughness and reliability, McDowell's 723 big league appearances from 1985 to 1996 were exceeded only by Lee Smith during those years. Responding to every challenge even on the grandest of stages, he helped the irascible 1986 New York Mets fight their way past other teams – and each other – toward a World Series title. Now, forty years later, Roger discusses his earliest beginnings in the game, his climb to professional baseball, and then brings the reader onto the 1986 Mets' roster for all the bus rides, dugout jokes, and locker room antics." Jimmy Carbone is back and we get the chance to catch up on his very busy year as well as discuss his upcoming event, Pig Island NYC.  Pig Island NYC is back for its 17th year on Saturday, September 12, 2026 when more than 20 chefs come together at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden to serve up some of their best dishes.  For more information or to purchase tickets go to  https://pigisland.com/ We recommend you go to Rogue Cookers website, https://roguecookers.com/ for award-winning rubs, Chef Ray Sheehan's website, https://www.raysheehan.com/ for award-winning saucess, rubs, and cookbooks, Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves,  Mantis BBQ, https://mantisbbq.com/ to purchase their outstanding sauces with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Kidney Project, and for exceptional sauces, Elda's Kitchen https://eldaskitchen.com/ To team up against prostate cancer go to https://fansforthecure.org/ for Fans for the Cure, and to subscribe to Bill Chuck's newsletter, Billy-Ball go to  https://billchuck.substack.com/    We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. Why It's Never Too Late To Take A Professional Leap: A Conversation With Entrepreneur David Thurston

Many of us have felt stuck professionally, like we've lost our spark, or are too old to follow our dreams. Entrepreneur David Thurston's new memoir, The Spiral Staircase: Why I Stepped Off a Rocket Ship to Build a Cathedral, is filled with insight and advice to help you get back on track. Jill sat down with Thurston, where he provided lessons from his own career journey. Thurston built a hair color brand called Pulp Riot from scratch, scaled it globally, and sold it to L'Oréal for nearly $100 million, all in under two years. But then, at the peak of success, he walked away, took a year off, and asked himself: What kind of company, and what kind of life, do I really want to build? Four years later, David and Alexis bootstrapped a new hair color brand, Danger Jones, which is taking on the industry's largest color houses by focusing on the professional artist community rather than traditional corporate marketing. The conservation is an honest look at what it takes to create something new, take on the biggest players in the industry, and create “work-life fusion” – not necessarily “work-life balance.” And why all the money in the world doesn't buy happiness.  Jill Wagner (@jillrwagner) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. She's the Managing Editor of Mo News. Jill previously worked as a correspondent for CBS News, Cheddar News, and News 12. She also co-founded the Need2Know newsletter, and has made it a goal to drop a Seinfeld reference into every Mo News podcast.

#362 The Class of 1997: Metal Albums That Defined a Surreal Year

“How many people do you think go into a bar and say: ‘I'd like an Everclear on the rocks, please…'?”   Looking back, 1997 seems utterly surreal…   To put things in perspective, 1997 marked the debut of South Park on Comedy Central, the release of Radiohead's breakthrough, third album, OK Computer, the beginning of the final season of Seinfeld, and (of course) the arrival of Metallica's conclusion to The Loads with Reload.   Perhaps one of the most surreal (and tragic) parts of 1997 was the time a bunch of children in a band called Hanson went viral with a song called MMMBop while a lesser known, criminally underrated, and FAR SUPERIOR band (with an extremely similar sounding name, consisting of former members of Helmet & Quicksand) called Handsome released their one (and only) album, Handsome, earlier that same year.     Sometimes life is just too weird and utterly unfair…   It's time to discover the power of “a better magical piece of paper” that is not a college degree and understand that whenever someone uses the term ‘dating' that “we know exactly what they're talking about”.    Find out who “stayed metal the whole time”, who was “chuggin' the D”, and who wasn't going to metal shows “unless it was Metallica” when you JOIN US as we go back in time almost 30 years with THE CLASS OF 1997. Stewart Alsop sits down with Matias Avalos on this episode of the Wisdom podcast to explore the intersection of technology, humanism, and creative sovereignty. The conversation moves from Matias's work with neural network-based audio plugins and effect chains to broader questions about corporate transhumanism, data ownership, and what it means to maintain human agency in an increasingly automated world. They discuss the dangers of convenience-driven technological adoption, the implications of companies like Palantir and Neuralink, and how bureaucratic incentives push toward total legibility while protecting their own opacity. Along the way, they touch on everything from IMAX audio production and the death of walkable cities to Instagram's transformation from visual diary to data extraction platform, ultimately arguing for local, open-source, and sovereign approaches to technology that keep humans in the loop rather than replacing them with "average fabrics" of algorithmic output. Find Matias Avalos on LinkedIn for more techno-poetic discussions.Timestamps00:00 Stewart welcomes Matias Avalos to discuss their friendship and upcoming conversation topics.05:00 Matias explains audio effect chains using neural networks to capture professional recording room signatures and create portable high-fidelity sound processing.10:00 Discussion of piezoelectric microphones converting sound vibrations to electrical signals and CIA experiments using lasers to capture audio from glass surfaces.15:00 Conversation shifts to digital audio recording, sampling rates, and the importance of source material quality for post-production work.20:00 Stewart shares his journey building web conferencing software to replace Riverside, encountering lip-sync problems and learning about FFMPEG processing.25:00 Matias discusses corporate transhumanism, Neuralink's implications, and how brain interfaces could enable continuous taste mining beyond medical applications.30:00 Analysis of corporate transhumanism through companies like Neuralink, discussing private decision-making, lack of transparency, and various transhumanist philosophies globally.35:00 Matias reads poetry about digital replicas and data generation, exploring how wearable devices continuously capture human activity creating targetable information streams.40:00 Discussion of Peter Thiel's shift from libertarianism to neoconservatism, Palantir's origins in Total Information Awareness program, and Buenos Aires as humanist sanctuary.45:00 Examination of American convenience culture, post-WWII suburban isolation, and Buenos Aires as walkable humanist alternative to car-dependent American cities.50:00 Matias presents Neil Harbison as positive transhumanism example, explaining color-to-vibration synesthesia implant while discussing techno-optimism from Global South perspective.55:00 Conversation explores bureaucratic incentives toward population legibility, compelled silence laws, and sovereignty through open-source local technology ownership avoiding corporate control.60:00 Matias concludes discussing digital identity ownership, social network portability, and how digital twins determine human worth across platforms and borders.Key Insights1. Modern digital audio processing technologies represent a fundamentally different approach to music and sound production compared to generative AI tools. Matias Avalos distinguishes between technologies like Neural DSP's Mantra plugin, which uses deep neural networks to capture and emulate professional recording environments, and generative platforms like Suno. The key difference is that traditional digital signal processing tools put the creator in control, allowing them to make artistic decisions using expensive effect chains that would otherwise only be available in elite studios like Abbey Road. These technologies democratize access to professional audio tools without removing human agency from the creative process, whereas generative AI tools operate as black boxes that produce outputs based on prompts rather than allowing genuine creative control.2. The capture and preservation of source material remains critically important in audio and video production, despite advances in post-production capabilities. Through his experience building a web conferencing application to replace Riverside.fm, Alsop learned that many technical problems, particularly lip-sync issues, stemmed from poor source file management and recording methodology. This principle extends across all media production, as Avalos explains using the example of missing lighting in professional photography. While modern generative AI might attempt to invent missing elements, the results cannot match properly captured source material. This highlights a fundamental tension in contemporary media production where the quality triangle of cheap, good, and fast has been disrupted by AI technologies that can deliver all three if we lower our standards for what constitutes good work.3. Corporate transhumanism represents a particular and concerning subset of transhumanist philosophy that differs significantly from earlier artistic and philosophical approaches to human enhancement. While early transhumanists like Neil Harbison, a color-blind artist who implanted a device to translate color frequencies into vibrations, pursued personal enhancement and expanded human experience, corporate transhumanism as practiced by companies like Neuralink focuses on technological integration with significant profit motives and control mechanisms. The discussion highlights how these corporate approaches position themselves as solving medical and cognitive problems while simultaneously creating dependency through terms of service, data mining, and token-based economic models. This represents a Trojan horse where the promise of enhanced capability masks the establishment of new forms of control and surveillance of human consciousness itself.4. The concept of legibility as a bureaucratic end goal rather than a means to an end explains much of the surveillance apparatus that has developed in Western societies, particularly in the United States since 9/11. Alsop describes how those in positions of power, wealth, and fame have a structural incentive to make everything around them legible and controllable while maintaining their own privacy and illegibility to external observation. This dynamic manifests in technologies like Palantir and in legal mechanisms like compelled silence through gag orders, which directly contradict constitutional principles of free speech. The drive for total legibility of populations appears to have no ultimate purpose beyond the accumulation of legibility itself, creating a recursive loop where surveillance and data collection become self-justifying activities that serve power structures rather than the populations they ostensibly protect.5. Human beings continuously generate enormous streams of metadata through their daily activities, creating what Avalos describes as evaporating against our own will into hundreds of RSS feeds for hundreds of corporations. This automatic data production occurs through basic activities like waking up, moving through space with smartphones and wearable devices, and interacting with digital platforms. The fundamental question that predates transhumanism but becomes more urgent within it is how individuals can own what they produce simply by existing and moving through the world. This data is captured through accelerometers, gyroscopes, GPS systems, and countless other sensors that create comprehensive digital profiles without explicit consent or meaningful control by the individuals being monitored. The unilateral nature of this communication, where individuals broadcast data without receiving genuine value in return, has become so deeply embedded in modern infrastructure that it forms part of the taken-for-granted landscape of contemporary life.6. Platform lock-in and the inability to migrate digital identity across services creates a new category of loss that requires genuine grieving. Avalos describes how his experience with Instagram, which began as a personal visual diary before the Facebook acquisition, evolved into a situation where he cannot extract his creative work and social connections from the platform without significant loss. This phenomenon extends beyond mere inconvenience to touch on fundamental questions of identity and citizenship, as social media profiles increasingly determine real-world opportunities like visa applications and border crossings. The implications of digital footprints have become severe enough that individuals can be denied entry to countries based on algorithmic analysis of their online interactions, likes, and expressed beliefs. This creates a situation where people are worth exactly what their digital twin indicates they are worth, with no meaningful avenue for human appeal or nuanced self-representation.7. The future relationship between humans and technology requires a return to principles of sovereignty, local control, and open source development rather than dependence on corporate platforms and proprietary systems. Both Alsop and Avalos advocate for a do-it-yourself approach to technology that emphasizes ownership and control over personal tools and data. This includes avoiding closed systems like Neuralink unless they become open source and user-controlled, and prioritizing local execution of AI models over cloud-based services that create dependencies and enable surveillance. The conversation suggests that techno-optimism remains possible, but only from what Avalos calls the trenches, acknowledging the different relationship that people in the Global South and those outside centers of power have with technology. This grounded optimism recognizes the entanglement of beneficial and harmful aspects of technological development and maintains that human agency and creative freedom require conscious resistance to the convenience-at-all-costs model that has characterized recent technological adoption.

The new game show “Nation's Dumbest,” flips the classic “Jeopardy!” script on its head. The format: twelve famous-ish contestants are peppered with basic logic and trivia questions. The twist is that those who perform well are sent home, with the last one standing receiving the title of “Nation's Dumbest.” On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz consider how the figure of the idiot has evolved over time, from Shakespearean fools—whose position of apparent ignorance allows them to speak difficult truths—to more recent “happy fools” like Austin Powers and the goofy, stunt-obsessed heroes of the “Jackass” franchise. Once a laughingstock, the idiot has reached new heights of influence in the era of A.I. summaries and the infinite scroll. Resisting stupidity can feel like an uphill battle. “Whatever it is to be smart, I'm doing this Sisyphean thing of continuing to push it up the hill, and the rock feels heavy,” Cunningham says. “The question is: is society a wind at your back, or going in the opposite direction?”  Read, watch, and listen with the critics: “Nation's Dumbest” (2026-) “Jeopardy!” (1984-) “Austin Powers” (1997) “Seinfeld” (1989-98) “The White Lotus” (2021-) “30 Rock” (2006-13) “Tracy Morgan Turns the Drama of His Life Into Comedy,” by Vinson Cunningham (The New Yorker) “American Humor,” by Constance Rourke “Born Yesterday” (1950) “Legally Blonde” (2001) Green Day's “American Idiot” “Jackass: Best and Last” (2026) Shakespeare's “King Lear” Shakespeare's “Hamlet” “A Short History of Stupidity,” by Stuart Jeffries “The Year in Stupidity,” by Naomi Fry (The New Yorker) “A Theory of Dumb,” by Lane Brown (New York) “Naked Gun” (2025) New episodes drop every Thursday. Matt and Michael open with the Texas heat and the strange feeling of being between seasons. Not just summer tipping toward fall, but the inner seasons of thought and spirit where old ideas fade and new ones haven't arrived. What do you do when you don't know what to do? They explore anxiety and faith, the discipline of presence, and how focusing on relationships unlocked unexpected reconnections. Then things get deeper. They wrestle with truth as conforming to reality, the fear of God as respect for overwhelming power, and why rights only work when they come from God rather than government. The conversation turns to communism and why it always ends in genocide, why markets and elections work because they let reality speak, and why everything good is good because of love. Michael calls it what it is. Two guys stumbling through ideas, pushing on things, trying to find the meat on the bone. Cheers y'all

But this morning, we're both back in the studio and Grant Bilse of the Wisco Sports Show joined us on the phone just after 8am. In the news this morning, the latest on the lettuce recall, people are in love with Jimothy the raccoon, an epic meltdown in #Florida, the White House teleprompter guy was apparently betting on Trump's speeches, and Jean recapped her trip to Madison to see AC/DC. In sports, the Brewers kept the train rollin' with a win over the Mets last night, the Packers signed an extension with Devonte Wyatt, the Michigan AD is stepping down, the latest on the death of Hannah Rapp, and the financial situation with LIV golf is getting worse. We talked about what's on TV & streaming today/tonight and we discussed the new "Avengers: Doomsday" trailer that dropped yesterday. Plus, Kelly Clarkson apparently thought she caught the explosive diarrhea…and Jerry Seinfeld was getting paid a ridiculous amount of money while filming "Seinfeld". Cool story about a 73 year-old guy who spends his time volunteering as a NICU baby cuddler, and a woman who bought a "soulmate drawing" off Etsy is now engaged to a guy that looks exactly like the drawing. Are you packing your cooler properly? Elsewhere in sports, FIFA is investigating the scrum after the World Cup championship game between Argentina and Spain, the WTA is going to start testing for gender, Josh Kerr breaks the 1-mile record, Bryson Dechambeau tried to call President Trump to help him with a penalty at the Open Championship, and people are arguing online about the viral video of a fan getting slapped by another fan after not standing for the National Anthem. We also had to talk about what's going on with Tom Brady. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy who was naked & "surfing" on top of a moving train, a #Florida police chief who resigned after he was accused of having sex with the wife of a guy he was investigating, a #FloridaWoman who was three times over the legal limit when she crashed into a construction site, and diarrhea on a splash pad!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you had nearly 300 screen credits, would you spend your free time mentoring new SAG-AFTRA members and helping fellow performers navigate a rapidly changing industry?? If your hand went up, you may be this week's guest, Lee Garlington!Lee joins Weezy and Lisa to discuss the unique, "hired gun" craft of popping into iconic shows with scene stealing roles and becoming what she calls "a director's actor." You had yet to learn her name when you saw her as Joey's father's mistress in Friends, as Bobby Cannavale's mother in Will & Grace, as Betty White's daughter on The Golden Girls and as Darlene's friend on Roseanne. You will know it now!Lee takes us behind the scenes on Psycho II and III, The West Wing, Sneakers, Six Feet Under and Seinfeld and shares harrowing axe-related stories from A Killing in a Small Town. She offers candid advice for aspiring actors, tells us about her work with the SAG-AFTRA Los Angeles Conservatory and discusses the realities of longevity in Hollywood, and her work with the Ruskin Group Theatre.Plus, an entertaining round of IMDb Roulette uncovers the horrors of sitting for a death mask fitting, why she ever so gently adjusted the placement of Robert Redford and how her performance went next level when Amy Madigan called her a nazi! This is a fascinating conversation about resilience, professionalism, and a lifelong love of the craft. And in current media, Weezy and Lisa talk about Is This Thing On and additional films that explore the standup comedy experience. Hawk Rock Talk: Rock Autopsy: Classic Rock One Hit Wonders 1It's Hawk Rock Summer, and Jason Gore and Geoff Garlock are putting on the gloves, grabbing the bone saw, and cracking open the chest cavity of Classic Rock Radio to examine one of its strangest organs: the classic rock one-hit wonder. What even counts as a one-hit wonder in classic rock? Did it have to make the Top 40? Does it count if the song barely charted, but every classic rock station played it eight times a day? Does it count if the band had other hits, but your local station decided, “No thank you, we will only be playing the one with the riff”?Jason and Geoff dig into a playlist of “that song!” bands, the groups whose names you may not know, whose albums you may never have heard, but whose one immortal track has been following you around your whole life through movie trailers, sports arenas, local classic rock stations, beer commercials, jukeboxes, and dads' cars.Along the way, Jason and Geoff discuss Christian fuzz gospel death boogie, LA spirituality, Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe's Seinfeld cup, Mungo holes, proto-metal holes, Paul Carrick's voice, Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street legacy, Tarantino soundtrack brain, Leslie West making a Les Paul look tiny, Arthur Brown as a pre-KISS theatrical freak, Argent records that Geoff keeps buying and selling, KISS's “God Gave Rock and Roll to You II,” and whether Europe should legally be required to play “The Final Countdown” three times per set. This is Part One. Rock Autopsy continues in two weeks.Next week: Queen: Live At Wembley 40th Anniversary Special!Subscribe to 108.9 The Hawk on YouTube and wherever you get podcasts.Support the station on Patreon:patreon.com/1089thehawkGet more Hawk:1089thehawk.com Hosted on Acast.
