6 Royal Rules Princess Diana Didn't Follow

Bright Side

It's no secret that Princess Diana continues to be a symbol of the British royal family for many people. She quickly changed the image of a princess from something haughty and unearthly to someone who is just like us. But even more so, she changed some of the ultimate rules of the monarchy! But which well-established rules did she boldly break? Let's find out! TIMESTAMPS: She chose her engagement ring by herself 1:21 She became the first woman in the royal family to deliver her babies outside the palace 2:11 She had her own opinions on how to raise her children 3:03 She was very open with “regular” people 4:51 She wasn't afraid to reveal her feelings 6:02 She experimented with her looks 7:10 How exactly did all of Princess Diana's actions change the monarchy? 8:10 Preview photo credit: HRH PRINCE CHARLES and LADY DIANA SPENCER - An informal study of Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer, whose wedding will take place at St Pauls Cathedral, London, on 29th July 1981 - Date: 26.07.1981. Ref: B39_084926_0026: By Bandphoto/UPPA/Photoshot fot. Photoshot/REPORTER, https://www.eastnews.ru/pictures/pict... Animation is created by Bright Side. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/... SUMMARY: - She chose her ring from a catalog! Of course, it didn't make it any less gorgeous, but, as Diana herself noted, it was still far from the most expensive ring out there. Now her jewelry has passed on to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, the wife of her son Prince William. - Princess Diana gave birth to both of her children in a hospital. Now royal mothers-to-be follow in Diana's footsteps, including the Duchess of Cambridge: she gave birth to all 3 of her children in the same hospital where Princess Diana delivered her sons. - She was against long separations, and that's why little William and Harry always traveled with their parents when they were performing their duties. - Pretty much everyone who remembers Princess Diana associates her name with kindness. Of course, she wasn't the only one who visited hospitals and did humanitarian work, but she was the only one who did it with extreme sincerity and openness. So it wasn't long before the public started to call her “The People's Princess.” - In 1995, she secretly gave an interview in which she confessed to having some difficulties in her relationship with her husband. Unfortunately, soon after this interview aired, the couple divorced. - Princess Diana was the icon of her time and one of the biggest fashion icons of all time too! She wasn't afraid to break the strict royal dress code and always managed to look elegant, trendy, and beautiful. - The Queen and her associates learned one important lesson: the existence of the monarchy in the UK depends on public opinion. As a result, the royal family has become way more open. In 2008 Therese Hughes stayed in the Ritz, had afternoon tea at the House of Commons and was invited to to Buckingham Palace where HRH  Prince Charles awarded her an MBE as a recipient in the Queen's Honours list for her work with the Health Services in Northern Ireland. That work included a compassionate practical solution to people suffering from hair loss - often due to the side effects of chemotherapy. Sometimes it's the little things that help when a person is seriousl ill, and sometimes, in cases like the non-life-threatening condition alopecia, the service provided by Tresses Wig and Hairpiece Boutique can also be life-changing. Therese comes from a large family of 14 children and began her hairdressing career as a young teenager when she learned her trade in Scissors hairdressers in Newry. She opened her very own salon at the tender age of nineteen and 17 years later, when a client was in need of a wig, Therese went on a mission to find one in London. With the help of an Orthodox Jew she did, and with that the seed was sown to fulfil a want deep in her soul. In 1998 Therese opened Tresses, the first wig and hairpiece boutique in the country, and the business went from strength to strength. She opened another boutique in Belfast and Therese established a relationship with the NHS, cementing that collaboration when she and a psychologist Professor Davidson in Belvoir Park Hospital set up the first dedicated  room that provided wigs and counselling services to patients suffering from hair loss, which was rolled out to hospitals all around the UK and Ireland. For this week's podcast Therese tells Armagh I how she got where she is today and why she feels compelled to do what she does. She tells us all about that memorable weekend when she was handed her MBE by HRH Prince Charles. A story that includes a fake Chanel handbag, a secret handshake and a very famous celebrity she met on the day…

Law With Mr. Lafayette
Finally, A Bill of Rights for the UK?

Law With Mr. Lafayette

This episode of Law With Mr. Lafayette focuses on a policy point contained in the annual tradition "across the pond" in the United Kingdom: the State Opening of Parliament.  On May 10, 2022, the "Speech from the Throne" was for the first time in over six decades not delivered by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.  The 96 year old Sovereign had asked her son HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales to fill in for her and to deliver the address on behalf of "Her Majesty's Government" in the Chamber of the House of Lords. Towards the end of the speech, which is written by the government, Charles mentioned that there would be a bill put forward "...creating a Bill of Rights, restoring the balance between the legislative and judicial branches of government. Unlike American Constitutional law, in the United Kingdom, there is no single document which is called the constitution.  Rather, as can be expected from the land of common law, the constitution consists of some written documents, some unwritten.  When discussing the rights of citizens, the storyline begins with 1215 and the Magna Carta and then consists of some parliamentary acts and precedents since then up to the present day. In the America case, 1791 is when the first ten amendments to the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights, were adopted by the States.  Ask a student of government or of the law and an actual list can be created (using the MLA header of course).  The freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, right to peaceably assemble, and petition the government for redress of grievances are just the first five freedoms that American citizens enjoy.  These rights, and those that follow, are among "...the declaratory and restrictive clauses" that the States had expressed the desire to have adopted "...in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers" [by the Federal government].  Part of the genius of the Constitution and the 27 amendments that have followed is the restrictions on the power of government in favor of the governed.

There's no better way to gain an understanding of the types of conversations that took place at COP26 than to talk to someone who was there. Gordon Bennett, Managing Director of Utility Markets for ICE, was in Glasgow and he joins the show to talk about the role financial markets can play in achieving some of the goals that were laid out at the conference. And unlike so many of the concepts discussed in Glasgow, Gordon says the tools financial markets can offer already exist. Net zero was a huge topic at the COP and Gordon explains why carbonomics and the pricing of externalities -- both negative and positive externalities -- are essential to the energy transition. With carbon pricing being lauded in Glasgow by the likes of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and HRH Prince Charles, Gordon says global carbon trading markets -- like those addressed in the final text of Article 6 at COP26 -- are an example of ways markets and data can help companies and economies establish the necessary pricing mechanisms to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable future.More resourcesArticle 6 text on global carbon markets finalized at COP26Sign up for Modern Money SmartBriefListen to the Renewable Energy SmartPodMore about ICE: Environmental, Social and Governance issues are in the spotlight. Hugh and Paul will share stories from the life of an extraordinary pioneer of the environmentalist movement, Richard St. Barbe Baker. One hundred years ago, Baker foresaw and warned the world about the emerging environmental crisis—and offered solutions that are only now being appreciated and applied. Baker's work as a forester and conservationist paralleled his activities as an early member of the Baha'i Faith, a faith that provided inspiration for his ceaseless efforts to conserve and restore the world's forests. Paul Hanley has published five books and 1600 articles on the environment, sustainable development, agriculture, and other topics. Paul's biography, Man of the Trees: Richard St. Barbe Baker, the First Global Conservationist (University of Regina Press 2018), features a foreword by HRH Prince Charles and introduction by Jane Goodall. A biography for middle school children, Richard St. Barbe Baker: Child of the Trees, was published in 2020. Paul has received a number of awards, most recently the Food System 2050 Vision Prize from the Rockefeller Foundation. Hugh Locke is president and co-founder of the Smallholder Farmers Alliance (SFA), a non-profit working with small-scale family farmers to help feed and reforest a renewed Haiti. Earlier in his career Hugh was director of the Office of Public Information at the Baha'i International Community in New York. While still a student, he was mentored by Richard St. Barbe Baker (1889 – 1982). Hugh subsequently established the Baker archives at the University of Saskatchewan and continues to serve as St. Barbe's literary trustee.

In this podcast, I'm showcasing the beautiful restorative work of Brana Records and the atmospheric debut album of Mike Ladouceur (@mike-ladouceur), Between Worlds. Brana Records is a label that is focused on restoring the wonderful rare recordings by the Polish/Brazilian pianist, Felicja Blumental. As well as recording the great masterpieces such as the piano concertos of Grieg and Rachmaninoff, Ms Blumental championed neglected early 19th century piano composers such as Clementi, Kuhlau, Czerny, and solo piano music by Spanish and Portuguese Baroque composers. She enjoyed a relationship with leading composers such as Penderecki and Villa-Lobos - he dedicated his Fifth Piano Concerto to Ms. Blumental, which she performed under the composer with leading orchestras of Europe and recorded for EMI in Paris with the Orchestre National. Her appearances in South and North America brought her further stardom. Many of these recordings are now released on Brana Records and all CD covers feature the fine art prints of Felicja Blumental's husband, Markus Mizne. It was a delight to receive a copy of one of these CDs; Ms Blumental's beautiful artistry and shimmering pianism shines through her recordings. Visit branarecords.com to learn more about Brana Records and purchase these CDs. Last week, I spoke to Mike Ladouceur, known for working on blockbusters like Ad Astra and Mission Impossible – Fallout, as well as the BBC hit TV series His Dark Materials. Mike's debut album, Between Worlds, is out now. It features 42 of London's top musicians - the music was recorded at Angel Studios and is published by Warp Publishing. Between Worlds was designed as a multi-artform, immersive experience. The album is accompanied by bespoke videos, presenting space scenes from NASA's satellite photography with stunning landscapes taken on earth from drone footage filmed by Phillip Whiteman. Nick Denman's album artwork uses the Automatic Drawing process, and is a series of paintings with acrylic and charcoal on canvas. In this interview, we talked about some of the ways online teaching can benefit music students during this current crisis. We also discussed the importance of narrative and individuality within a composer’s voice, and this is something that is very much at the heart of Between Worlds. We talked about the creative process behind the album and the collaboration between other narrative media. Many thanks to Jonathon Tester for putting me in touch with Mike about his wonderful projects, and to Mike for taking the time to talk to me! Interview recorded 1st May 2020; published 9th May 2020. Mike's film and TV credits include music for Dateline (NBC) and Aurora Fearnley's epic Sci-fi Pulsar (Little Northern Light/Reel Issues Films), which stars David Gyasi and Jessie Buckley. Mike enjoys working with the internationally celebrated composer Lorne Balfe, and has written additional music and arrangements for His Dark Materials (HBO/BBC) and for Master Moley (Nottage Productions) starring Gemma Arterton, Charles Dance, Julie Walters, Warwick Davis. Mike worked as Orchestrator on major projects including Ad Astra (Plan B), Gemini Man (Skydance/Paramount), and worked on the Music Department of Mission Impossible: Fallout (Paramount), The Emoji Movie (Sony) and Call the Midwife (BBC). Mike’s notable career highlights are many and varied, and include winning the Angel Award for Best Original Music, Short Film for BirthCloud, and the Tagore Gold Medal for outstanding musical contributions at the Royal College of Music, presented in March 2016 by HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales. Mike is a passionate educator and holds prestigious teaching posts at two of the world's leading institutions, London's Royal College of Music and the University of Cambridge, where he teaches the film music curriculum at both undergraduate and Master's levels. Mike is signed to Warp Publishing.

They dreamt of creating a whisky as pure and precious as Welsh gold, represented today by Penderyn's ‘gold seam'.The friends had a location in the historic village of Penderyn on the southern tip of the Brecon Beacons, chosen because of the site's own supply of fresh natural spring water. They also had a unique copper single-pot still designed by Dr David Faraday, a relative of the great 19th-century scientist Michael Faraday. Penderyn Whisky was launched on St David's Day 2004 in the presence of HRH Prince Charles. At Penderyn we produce our own malted barley spirit which, when matured, is recognized worldwide as one of the finest single malt whiskies. In this episode, Penny discusses the typical stages of near-death experiences, the Life Review process and how that changes people, what we learn from children’s NDEs, how people’s cultural beliefs affect their NDES, what NDEs teach us about life, the implications of NDEs with people in comas and taking medications like morphine, plus her personal advice to the bereaved, people who have had NDEs but not told anyone, and an important message to healthcare workers about our need to integrate spirituality into healthcare. We had some Skype issues during the interview, so there are two minor edits you might notice; but Penny wasn’t phased by it and displayed a calmness and kindness that’s infectious. Enjoy!” ~ Bob Olson, Afterlife TV SHOW NOTES: DR. PENNY SARTORI’S BOOK: The Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE (paperback). BUY THE KINDLE VERSION: click here. Penny Sartori is a registered nurse who began researching Near Death Experiences (NDEs) in 1995 after one of her long-term intensive care patients begged her to let him die in peace. The event shook her deeply and eventually led her to enroll in a PhD program to research NDEs. The findings, along with the profound spiritual lessons that she has gleaned from her work, are published here. During her academic work, Sartori studied three samples of ICU patients during a five year period. The first consisted of 243 patients from the first year of data collection who survived their ICU experience. Of those, two experienced an NDE, and two an out-of-body experience (OBE). The second cohort consisted of survivors of cardiac arrest during the five year period. Of those, 39 patients (or 18%) experienced an NDE. The third cohort consisted of all the patients who experienced an NDE during the five year period. Their stories are captured in her new book. DR.
