Dominique plays the role of "Reef," a strong, unique and competitive person to "Dalton" (Jake Gyllenhaal) and "Billy" (Lucas Gage) in and out of the Roadhouse. Reef, who is an experienced boxer in college, peaks Dalton's interest to bring him on board and work side by side with "Billy" (Lucas Gage). This establishes a trustworthy dynamic and friendship between all three of them as you will see throughout the film. Dalton's biggest challenge is fighting off the bad seeds in the Roadhouse with the help of Reef and Billy. Roadhouse is set to premiere on March 21st, 2024 on Amazon Prime. After 35 years from its original, the remake of Roadhouse is coming to your screens, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton and UFC superstar Conor McGregor in his first acting debut. Roadhouse, directed by the amazing, Doug Liman, who gave us films like The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow, is a reimagining of the 1989 cult film by the same name. The original Roadhouse starred the incredible and remarkable Patrick Swayze as Dalton, a renowned “cooler” with a mysterious past who is hired to take over security at a club in Jasper, Missouri, named the Double Deuce. Dalton quickly makes his presence known as an incorruptible and dangerous force able to stand toe-to-toe with any man before him. This new feature stars Jake as a former UFC fighter struggling to make ends meet. After the owner of a Florida Keys roadhouse finds him sleeping in his car, Elwood Dalton becomes a bouncer and finds himself roped into a war of outlaws and bikers (including actual mixed martial artist, turned first-time actor, Conor McGregor) and a developer determined to build a lavish resort for the rich jerks. You might recognize Dom from the hit EMMY nominated series, Ray Donovan, as series regular Damon King. The street-smart, homeless teenager with quick hands and boxing skills. After a year long run on the series, Dom acted alongside some great names like Liev Schrieber, Eddie Marsan, Jon Voight, Paula Malcomson, and many more. You can still see Dom in Brad Furman's feature, City of Lies, as Tyrell which investigates the murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G and stars some heavy hitters along with Columbus, Johnny Depp and Forrest Whitaker. He can also be seen in the Nick Richey feature film Low Low, which is currently out on Amazon Prime. SEASON 8 PREMIERE: STREEPS OF FIRE!  THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE & THE IRON LADY  Our Streep season begins! In 2022 Streep is an untouchable icon, as beloved as any actor in the modern era. You know what? To get there it took a whole lot of work in a whole lot of movies. Streep was once (we're talking the 1980s here) seen as a too-serious actress, good with accents, dismissed for solely making hoity-toity films with awards aspirations. The cultural movement of the 1980s toward stupid stuff gave her that silly reputation for a minute. Crazy, right? Streep kept following the roles that interested her with filmmakers she wanted to work with and, slowly, built as varied a filmography of either straight-up good films or, at the very least, films that looked good on paper, as any actor the last fifty years.  And she did it all while continuously working through middle age and beyond when Hollywood generally tends to toss out actresses for younger models. Hopefully her career will be a beacon to change all of that. She is one of a kind.  In THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (2004) Streep plays a senator who's son may become president through slightly unorthodox means in Jonathan Demme's ill-advised remake of John Frankenheimer's 1962 paranoid classic (covered on our season 7 premiere!). Denzel Washington plays a PTSD-ridden veteran who thinks Streep's son (played by a baby-faced Liev Schrieber) is not the war hero he remembers and may be part of a scheme of a large company to install a puppet president (thank goodness this kind of thing never happens in real life). Streep has the daunting task of filling the late Angela Landsbury's legendary shoes in a role heavily changed to reflect the early 2000s along with being expanded to suit someone of Streep's stature. Does it work? Listen and find out! THE IRON LADY (2011) is Streep's turn as controversial UK PM Margaret Thatcher. Streep disappears into the role as one would expect, and won an Oscar, as was deserved. But the film itself? It's timey-wimey with a fascinating structure and framing device. It has a less-than-stellar reputation and we'll discuss that between marveling at Streep's effortless, beautiful, and nuanced performance that almost makes you forget who she is playing.  BONUS: Super Streep fan Andi is joining us all season to quickly strike down any negative Streep talk. BONUS 2: We begin a new feature this season: WHAT WOULD MARGARET THATCHER THINK OF THIS MOVIE? Prepare to roll your eyes so hard they get stuck. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I. (ft. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This September is “Masterclass Month” at Catching Up On Cinema! Every September, Trevor and Kyle celebrate the anniversary of Catching Up On Cinema by doing a deep dive into one of cinemas most famous franchises. September 2022 marks the 4th year anniversary of the show, and to celebrate the occasion, Trevor and Kyle will be reviewing the first 4 films of the X-Men film series! This week, Trevor and Kyle review Gavin Hood's, X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)! A troubled production in many regards, Gavin Hood's, X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) was to serve as the first in a new subseries of X-Men Origin films, however it's critical failure would result the subsequent cancellation and reworking of the proposed X-Men Origins: Magneto film into X-Men First Class (2011). The first of 3 solo Wolverine films to be headlined by Hugh Jackman as the title character, X-Men Origins is an odd duck of a film that goes to great lengths to draw attention to subtle elements connecting it to the previous X-Men films, while simultaneously completely bungling the same procedure in regards to major plot elements and characterizations. Produced nearly parallel to X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins is an incredibly expensive sequel that often feels like the result of the former films' creative table scraps. While not explicitly stated (publicly), it is heavily rumored that director Gavin Hood was strong-armed by 20th Century Fox into making a more a cheesier and more lighthearted film than he would have preferred. Hampered by a clunky and highly utilitarian script, as well as a hurried editing style and evidence of unfinished and/or rushed visual effects work, X-Men Origins bears many of the hallmarks signs of a troubled or creatively hamstrung production. A fine exhibition of Hugh Jackman and Liev Schrieber's screen presence and raw charisma, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is watchable and largely inoffensive, however in failing to impress on the action and effects front, and failing to fit cleanly into series continuity, Origins is likely remembered as a smear on the franchise to be wiped clean by later films in the series, or not remembered at all. Superheroes, Movies & Superhero Movies: A Cinema Heroes Podcast

In what Stew calls "the Golden Age of Superhero Movies," X-Men Origins: Wolverine was released but it's certainly not a golden movie. It was supposed to be one of three Origins movies (the other two being Magneto and Cyclops) but perhaps after this film was released those ideas were scrapped (or changed, as the Magneto film became X-Men: First Class). It's certainly not the highlight of Hugh Jackman's long career as playing Wolverine but what do John and Stew think about it? My guest today and I worked together in Club Med Lindeman Island, Australia in 2000/2001. His first season was at Club Med Chateau Royal-Noumea, New Caledonia in April of 1999 as a Circus G.O. Everyone, please help me give a big Aussie welcome to Luke “Casper” Murphy! Casper is originally from Maitland, New South Wales Australia and now lives in Sydney. Casper recounts a very funny story about his first night in Noumea involving him dressing in drag as Celine Dion and a trip to a local bar. He also tells us what it was like being a high-level gymnast before Club Med. We of course talk about our time in Lindeman Island and all the fun we had there. Casper even recounts a conversation he had with Liev Schrieber and Hugh Jackman on the set of 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine (which was filmed in Australia), where he was a WW1 extra. There is a Club Med, full-circle moment with this story, so you will just have to listen all the way to the end to find out. Listen here or wherever you get your podcasts. **You will hear a lot of talk of “VB” in this episode, and that is an Australian beer called VB, or, Victoria Bitter. We also mention the word, “Bush Chook” which is a bird native to Australia (or as Casper likes to call them, a purple-breasted swamp fowl or Australasian swamphen), which is like a bigger, uglier version of a pigeon. I issued a challenge to the Circus Team involving said Bush Chook and an obscene amount of beer.

In this Phantoms podcast, you'll definitely hear how Tyler loves Ben Affleck. And if you haven't heard, according to Jay from Jay and Silent Bob, Affleck was the BOMB in Phantoms, YO! Phantoms is a movie few people have seen. It bombed at the box office, despite the studio using the Oscar push for "Good Will Hunting" to sell Affleck and this cheesy monster flick from the mind of Dean Koontz, aka "The guy you read when that Stephen King book has too many pages in it." For many people our age, Phantoms is more tied to a couple of pretty good jokes in "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," where Ben Affleck, playing his "Chasing Amy" character of Holden McNeill, talks to Jay about that "kid" in "Good Will Hunting" delivering the performance of the century in this little flick. But, as you'll learn when listening to this Phantoms podcast, the movie itself is worth watching, mostly because of how much absolute insanity it delivers throughout its brisk 90-minute runtime. Seriously, this movie is crazy. It starts off as a story of murderous ghosts (maybe), then turns into a monster flick about a Godlike creature that can literally do whatever it wants, including make lazy homages to "The Thing." This movie also stars Peter OToole. Yes, that beloved Peter O'Toole. And he's in quite a bit of it! You know, "Lawrence of Arabia's" Peter O'Toole. He's here with Rose McGowen and Ben Affleck in a gigantic cowboy hat. Speaking of Rose McGowen, "Phantoms" has a part to play in the eventual exposure of that dickhead Harvey Weinstein. Listen to Tyler talk around some speculation of the messed-up history of Miramax. Also on the Phantoms podcast, we discuss the very strange performance of Liev Schrieber, who in the late-1990s specialized in playing creepy weirdos, or weirdo creeps. This one is especially bug-nuts. Perhaps even creepier, the barely-regarded tragic backstory of Ben Affleck's FBI agent-turned-cowboy-sheriff. The climax of this movie leans hard on it, and well, it's unbelievable. Happy Halloween - Phantoms Podcast This Phantoms Podcast gets into the actual movie at about the 45 minute mark. Tyler talks about Jay and Silent Bob a lot during the first part of this podcast, specifically about his experience watching the Fathom Events Jay and Silent Bob double-feature. He talks about his history with 2001's "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," which includes a harrowing story of his high school friends driving an ungodly speed on the freeway in an effort to catch every second of Kevin Smith's View Askew extravaganza. This leads into a conversation about the new "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot," which people can check out when Kevin Smith travels the country with his Reboot Roadshow over the next few months. Show Rundown: In this week’s episode, we talk about the return of Game Of Thrones, which kicked off its penultimate season on Sunday night. Peter Brown from Assignment X joins us. In our second segment, we review the final installment of the “Planet of the Apes” movies, “War For The Planet Of The Apes.” Smith super loves this series. Was he happy with how it all ended? Well, you’ll have to listen and find out. And finally, we end our show with what we’re dorking out about this week, which is basically just the Emmy nominations.  Topic 1: Game of Thrones Season 7 Opener Unless you’ve attending dinner parties at House Frey, you know that Game Of Thrones kicked off its 7th season on Sunday, the first of seven new episodes. Next year, its season 8 and final season will have six episodes. Every episode since the show first aired in 2011 has been leading up to these final two seasons. Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have masterfully set up the game board for what is sure to be an epic conclusion. Joining us to talk about Sunday night’s Game Of Thrones is Peter Brown from Assignment X. Topic 2: War for the Planet of the Apes and What Makes Great Trilogies That brings us to our review of War for the Planet of the Apes, and a larger discussion of just what is so great about a movie trilogy. There’s nothing quite like a great movie trilogy. Why is that? And does this recent Planet of the Apes trilogy rank among them? War for the Planet of the Apes is the final movie in the prequelish trilogy of Apes movies which began with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes and 2014’s great Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Starring Andy Serkis as Caesar, the lab ape-come-Moses-figure to a tribe of intelligent apes living in California after a plague has wiped out 499 of every 500 people, and Woody Harrelson as a human soldier trying to clutch onto the human control of Earth as a second wave of plague might be finishing off humans for good, War has been widely praised and renewed talk of how the Oscars might honor work like Serkis’ here… performances which are not all CGI and not all human.   What makes a great trilogy? Why do we care about trilogies? Star Wars Trilogy Lord of the Rings Trilogy Toy Story Trilogy Mad Max Trilogy Alien Trilogy Spider-Man Trilogy Dark Knight Trilogy Back to the Future Trilogy Bourne Trilogy Dollars Movies Trilogy Godfather Trilogy Matrix Trilogy Indiana Jones What We're Dorking Out About The Emmy nominations …. We keeping hearing that we’re in the Platinum Age of Television, but when it comes to the Emmy nominations it’s just business as usual. The Emmys seem to take a giant leap forward last year, nominating criminally overlooked shows like “The Americans,” and giving Emmys to the leads of Orphan Black and Mr. Robot, neither of which are nominated this year, just like “The Americans.” Instead the Emmys took two steps back with nods for shows that are kinda played out like House Of Cards and Modern Family and honoring “movie stars” like Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Spacey, and Liev Schrieber for their TV work even if the performances are not the best TV has to offer. I’m not sure “Westworld” really deserves to be in the Best Drama category. I feel like that nomination is more the result of HBO’s big Emmy marketing budget. And I don’t want to even get into how much I hate that “Sherlock” is nominated for anything, because it was terrible. There are some bright spots. I was happy to see all the Emmy nominations for A Handmaid’s Tale, Atlanta, Stranger Things and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I’m glad to see so many SNL actresses nominated for supporting actress. Smith, what did you think of the Emmy nominations? Markets around the world hold their breath in anticipation of the Fed Chairman’s every word. Yet the average American knows very little about the most powerful financial institution on earth. Narrated by acclaimed actor Liev Schreiber, Money For Nothing: Inside The Federal Reserve is the first film to take viewers inside America’s central bank and reveal the impact of Fed policies – past, present and future – on our lives. As Ben Bernanke’s tumultuous tenure comes to a close, join Paul Volcker, Janet Yellen, and many of the world’s best financial minds as they debate the decisions that led the global economy to the brink of collapse and ask whether we might be headed there again.
