Send us a textThis special Edition of our podcast , is a look back at two of our favorite motion pictures, "Casablanca" , and "Havana", just in time for "Casablanca" to be making its reappearance on the Silver Screen over the next week at theaters all across the nation. The Flashback Theater Series will be featuring the picture at various theaters around the country (At Stone Theaters at the Market Commons, for those here in the Myrtle Beach S.C. area) on February 9, 12, and Valentine's Day February 14th. We cannot urge you enough to go see it on the big screen if you have never done so, or if you want to see it again. There is nothing like it. In this episode , we have looked all over to find source material that could tell the unlikely story of this movie, made in utter chaos, with actors who did not believe in the story, and did not want to be making the movie, writer's actually rewriting and creating the story as they went along, day by day, during the production, and creating this movie that did not even have a settled end, when it was finished. But somehow out of that chaos came a cinematic masterpiece that has left only one question to debate....Is it the greatest movie ever made? or is it just one of the greatest movies ever made? No one even dares say its not great. It is also a movie that has been imitated several times but no one as of yet has ever been able to replicate its magic, though one movie came the closest even if it failed at the box office, and we will take sometime to look at that movie too, "Havana", directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Elena Olin, Robert Redford and Raul Julia. We share them both with you , just as Casablanca is about to return to the big screen, on this Valentine's Week and also because they , along with Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, served as the inspiration of our own Host's new novel that will be out near the end of 2025 or at the start of 2026.

This episode examines Absence of Malice, a 1981 drama directed by Sidney Pollack. After Miami-based newspaper reporter Megan Carter (Sally Field) is tipped off by Justice Department organized crime strike force chief Elliot Rosen (Bob Balaban) about a criminal investigation into the disappearance and likely murder of a local union official, her paper runs a sensational front-page story. But the supposed target of the investigation, Michael Gallagher (Paul Newman), the son of an infamous bootlegger, is innocent; Rosen, the strike force chief, has leaked his name to the press to try to squeeze Gallagher for information. Gallagher is incensed and tries to pressure Megan to reveal her source. Megan initially refuses but later relents after her story unexpectedly leads to the tragic death of a friend of Gallagher's. Gallagher and Megan also become romantically involved. Gallagher hatches a plot to get even and get the government off his back. He causes an unsuspecting Megan to write another sensational story, this time implicating the District Attorney in a bribery scheme that Gallagher has invented. When the truth is revealed, both the prosecutors and the newspaper are humiliated, the victims of their own game of leaking information and reporting about it. Absence of Malice provides an insightful, if unflattering, picture of how newspapers operate and some of the ethical and moral complications that can result from the robust protections afforded the press under the First Amendment. It may not be a musical, but it sure is close... It's The Way We Were! It's 1973. Watergate has happened. Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford, Arthur Laurents, and Sidney Pollack get together to re-create the weepy romcom in the non-musical—but musical-theatre-adjacent!—classic The Way We Were. We talk about: The Conflict: Streisand & Laurents versus Pollack & Redford, and some of the behind-the-scenes drama that led to the creation of this classic. The Song: Marvin Hamlisch's classic song that put the film on the map. The Laughter: What does it mean to sing, "so it's the laughter we will remember?" Laughter emerges as a marker of class & race in this film. How does that marker intersect with the misty, watercolor nature of memory – and the danger of nostalgia? The People & the Principles: the film's central conflict between personal relationships and principles, and how that conflict maps (and doesn't) onto religious systems. Is Christianity about people, or is it about principles? You'll hear: Barbra singing the film's title song from the 1973 film soundtrack, and an excerpt from the 1998 episode of Sex in the City, Episode 18 (“Ex in the City”). One of my very favorite films and featuring one of Paul Newman's favorite performances, Sidney Lumet's 'The Verdict' has grown in stature and appreciation since its premiere in 1982. With a brilliantly adapted screenplay by multi-hyphenate David Mamet, a tortured development process encompassing stars like Redford and other directors named Sidney (Pollack), and a first-rate cast, 'The Verdict' is one of the greatest courtroom dramas of all time. I'm thrilled to be joined once again by author and editor Keir Graff, who once again turns in an excellent appearance as a well-prepared guest on the pod. We dive deep into the making of this film, play some iconic scenes, and discuss the nuances and joys of the performances, the writing, the directing and the production elements that make this wonderful film such a standard of the form.
Hi there Kim and apparently Melanie who also reads the show notes. These show notes are for you 2 unless someone else wants to show themselves! I will see you at our next secret meeting and I will invite your favorite guest to join us! How about that for a bonus! I wanted today's conversation with Peter Coyote to be evergreen or always relevant whenever you decide to listen to it so I eschewed the normal production elements and news and got right to my chat with the legend. Special thanks to Mark Nolte and his ban City Park in Iowa City who wrote this song for Peter. Please go listen or stream it! Having completed the FDNY training on Sept. 10, the 2001 Hobart graduate expected to have the day off. On his way to try out for a FDNY hockey team, Serra crossed the Verrazano Bridge and saw the World Trade Center's twin towers on fire. He immediately grabbed his gear and made his way downtown – where he checked in with the first “white helmet” he saw, an identifier of FDNY Fire Chiefs. Despite having no experience, Serra says, “it never crossed my mind not to go.” The day changed his life forever. “Pretty much as soon as I got down there, I started to bleed from my nose.” Like thousands of first responders, emergency workers and civilians on Sept. 11, Serra suffers from illnesses as a result of exposure to toxic ash and debris on the day of the attacks and in the months following, when he worked at the Staten Island recovery site to search for the personal effects of victims. Having undergone surgery to remove nasal polyps, Serra now faces neurological damage– including neuropathy and fibromyalgia, which has led to intense bouts of shaking, nerve pain and trouble walking. Learn more about Rob Serra The Firefighters Podcast is the hottest podcast in America, literally. The film Three Days of the Condor, directed by Sidney Pollack, released in 1975, was loosely based on the novel Six Days of the Condor by James Grady. The recommendation for choosing this film was from my father. The film stars the excellent Academy Award winner Robert Redford as the main character CIA analyst Joseph Turner, the fantastic Academy Award winner Faye Dunaway as his "lover" Kathy Hale, the longtime successful actor Max von Sydow as the assassin Joubert, and the talented Academy Award recipient Cliff Roberston as CIA Director Higgins. The central plot involves Joseph Turner going on the run after his coworkers are brutally murdered and Joseph trying to survive and figuring out who to trust. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/collin-sugg/message

The Blurred Reality of Dreams: Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut The History of Cinema has known many great names. Few have had the success, respect, and influence of Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999). With a filmography of only twelve films (unless you include his hated Fear and Desire), Kubrick stands tall among the great directors: Lang, Murnau, Hitchcock, Ford, etc. and continues to fascinate audiences. This week Ibrahim & I sit down to discuss the late filmmaker's last film, Eyes Wide Shut (1999). This is a difficult film, tackling a troubling subject - marital infidelity, paranoia, and insecurity. Featuring Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, and a wonderful and troubling Sidney Pollack, Eyes Wide Shut is a problematic and fascinating last film from a great director. Take a listen as Ibrahim and I discuss this final film from a master. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Our Thanks for Your Continued Support.

“Onde vocês estão me levando?”
As a youth, Actor HANK GARRETT grew up on the mean streets of Harlem, NY., roaming the streets as a hoodlum and constantly getting in trouble with the law. Eventually, Hank would go on to turn his life around and inspire many of today's wayward youths down the path towards a life of fulfillment. During Hank’s six decades in Showbiz, he has appeared in episodes of: Columbo, Kojak, BJ and The Bear, Paris, Three’s Company, and played Officer Ed Nicholson on the classic 1960’s sitcom, Car 54 Where are You? But, to many, he may best be known for playing the gritty role as the killer mailman alongside Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway in Sidney Pollack’s 1975 thriller: Three Days of The Condor. He’s back again on the show to talk about his new memoir called: From HARLEM HOODLUM TO HOLLYWOOD HEAVYWEIGHT.

3 Days of the Condor Adrienne Barbeau was born in Sacramento, California, and caught the showbiz bug while entertaining troops on Army bases in Southeast Asia as part of the San Jose Civic Light Opera. She moved to New York City in the 1960s and made her Broadway debut co-starring in Fiddler on the Roof with Bette Midler. She went on to star in more than 25 musicals and plays, originating the role of Rizzo in the Broadway production of Grease, for which she was nominated for a Tony. From 1972 to 1978, Adrienne starred in the sitcom Maude as Carol, the daughter of Bea Arthur’s character. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for that role. She also made appearances in numerous TV shows, movies of the week and game shows. In 1980 Adrienne starred in her first theatrical film, John Carpenter’s The Fog, as radio deejay Stevie Wayne. That film established her as a genre film star. She went on to star in sci fi and horror classics such as Escape from New York, Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing, and the Steven King adaptation Creep Show. She’s also starred in comedies like Canonball Run and Back to School and Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death. She’s never stopped working and we’re thrilled to have her on the show with guest host Katie Walsh. Adrienne chose to talk about 3 Days of the Condor, based on the 1974 novel Six Days of the Condor by James Grady. Sidney Pollack directed the 1975 film, which was written by Lorenzo Semple Jr. and David Rayfiel. If you haven't seen it yet, go watch 3 Days of the Condor. Episode 092 of the Stinking Pause podcast with Scott, Charlie and Paul The movie review this week is Tootsie from 1982, starring Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange, directed by Sidney Pollack. New York actor Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is a talented perfectionist who is so hard on himself and others that his agent (Sydney Pollack) can no longer find work for him. Look up “Hollywood Royalty” in your Webster’s Dictionary, and you just might find the name and face of Oscar Nominee, Golden Globe Winner, and movie producer Hawk Koch on the page. In this podcast interview with Bob & Suzanne, Hawk talks about his unique childhood on movie sets with his father, Howard W. Koch, one of the most prominent film producers of his generation. Hawk describes how school vacations spent on movie sets led to his passion for film making and to an inspiring career working with legendary directors like Robert Aldrich, Sidney Pollack, Paul Mazursky, and Robert Wise. It wasn’t long before he evolved from being “the kid” on Hollywood soundstages to getting hired as the production assistant on Sidney Pollack’s This Property Is Condemned, where he quickly proved himself as someone who could “get it done.” After a stint as a rock & roll road manager for iconic performers like The Supremes and The Dave Clark Five, Hawk returned to Hollywood as an assistant director on movies destinedto become : Rosemary’s Baby, Chinatown, and Barefoot in the Park. Hawk candidly recalls how he rose through the Hollywood ranks to work closely with iconic film stars like Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, Jessica Lange, Mickey Rourke, Faye Dunaway, Paul Newman, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, and Kirk Douglas. You’ll hear how Hawk’s passion for the entertainment business continued to propel him up through the ranks as the producer of dozens of critical and box office hits, including The Pope of Greenwich Village, Heaven Can Wait, Wayne’s World, Primal Fear...and the list goes on. Hardly resting on his laurels Hawk Koch works hard to "pay it forward" as he vigorously supports the Hollywood film industry. He’s currently President Emeritus of the Producers Guild of America, and has served on the Board of the National Film Preservation Foundation. Hawk most recently served as 2012-13 President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and continues to produce the movies we love.
Edición número 31 de La Gran Evasión. 7-4-2015.
