Dusty Rhodes bemoans to Magnum TA and David Crockett how Baby Doll spent $4035 of his money in Hawaii. I'm happy to say that after almost ten years of doing the podcast, I can finally welcome Rob Naylor (@NINaylor) to the podcast to talk about Jim Crockett Promotions in the summer of 1985, when Rob and I both starting watching the company. We begin by talking about how we first found it, possibly on the same TV station in Philadelphia, even though we live 200 miles from each other in different states. And yes for longtime listeners, we play Mid-Atlantic TV Station Bingo (17, 29, 43, 45, 54, 57). We talk about our favorite wrestlers from those shows, including the booker at the time and later Rob's mentor Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, Magnum TA, Ole and Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Baby Doll, Sam Houston, Manny Fernandez, Jimmy Valiant, the Rock and Roll Express, the Midnight Express and Jim Cornette, Ron Bass, Black Bart, J.J. Dillon and maybe our favorite person of that era, Nature Boy Buddy Landell. We discuss how the guys in the Georgia loop of the company were rarely on the syndicated TV shows, which is all Rob and I could watch regularly, since neither of us had cable yet. We discuss some of the more memorable angles and feuds of that time frame. Suprisingly, we totally did not discuss the return of Superstar Billy Graham to wearing the tie-dye gear and quoting Bo Diddley and/or George Thorogood. There's also a lot of meandering and digressions as one would expect, including the importance of the magazines in our fandom, first getting the Observer, the history of the National, booking around Japan tours, the blandness of Central States and, as young fans, not undestanding the importance of the Missouri title in the wider NWA ecosystem. This was a very fun show to do and I'm glad Rob and I finally got to nerd out on the show about our early fandom.

It was very hard to come up with a title for this episode because it spans two very related but also difficult to explain topics. One centers on a look at Franz Mehring's essay "The German Reformation and its Consequences"and the other being the life and times of one Louis De Geer. John offers Mehring's explanation of the Reformation as a different framework for looking at the 30 Years War and its context, to be paired and contrasted with those offered by Wedgewood and Wilson in their more political/military histories of the time period. This context, the changing nature of economic conditions and conflict between classes and states, drives the career of Louis De Geer from humble Calvinist "refugee" in the Netherlands to the father of both Swedish industry and Swedish involvement in the slave trade. Suprisingly, there is less information available regarding the latter than the former. Come, as John purges his demons so he can finish the rest of the dang war already.  Rage Against the Machine- Ashes in the Fall Horse the Band- Octopus on Fire Ensiferum- Slayer of Light Tears for Fears- The Prisoner

Suprisingly, Dean didn't really feature for his school side De La Salle as he didn't see eye to eye with the teacher (unsuprisingly!) Hear why they dominated for over a decade, winning two National Cup Finals along the way. Dean tells us why he didn't really fancy playing for teams outside Crocky, even after scoring a hatrick on his debut for Cammel Lairds. He talks about his favourite goals, games and all about the lads he shared a pitch with and played against throughout those times. Episode 92 is brought to you by: Elite Lanscaping Northwest

Summary:A three-minute podcast from the hosts of The Feathered Desert about individual bird species found in the desert Southwest.   For our hearing impaired listeners, a transcript of this podcast follows the show notes on Podbean.   Show Notes:Song provided by Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, recorded by Stephen Chase https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/verdin/overview https://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/verdin Our New email address, please reach out with comments, questions, or suggestions: thefeathereddesert@gmail.com   Transcript Host voice - Welcome to the Feathered Desert's What's That Bird? A three-minute glimpse into the birds that we share this amazing desert landscape with.   Kiersten - The verdin is a very small songbird at only 3.5 to 4.5 inches and is found strictly in the southwest, ranging through western Texas, southern New Mexico, southern Arizona, the extreme southern tip of Nevada, southern California, and northern Mexico. Adults have distinctive coloring with a yellow face, head, and throat, gray body, red shoulder patches, a small, sharply pointed black beak and black legs. Juveniles will be all gray. The verdin ties with the bushtit as the smallest passerine in NA.               They eat all stages of small insects including spiders. They are considered gleaners, which means they snatch insects off of leaf surfaces. Occasionally, they can be seen hanging upside down from a branch as they search the underside of leaves for a suitable meal. They also eat fruit and are especially partial to berries. They are often mistaken for hummingbirds as they do visit hummingbird feeders. As soon as they hang upside down from the feeder's perch you know it's a verdin. Suprisingly, they are not after the liquid nectar, most often they are searching for the sugar water that crystalizes on the ports of the feeder. When you hear this call (Verdin call plays) you know a Verdin is nearby.   Verdin choose dense bushes, shrubs, and thickets to nest and roost. In the desert, one of their favorite trees is the Palo Verde. During the breeding season, a mated pair will make an enclosed nest of sticks, leaves, and grass held together with spider webs. The male focuses on the outside construction while the female lines the nest with soft grass, feathers, and plant down. This enclosed nest will open toward the prevailing winds to help keep it cool in the heat of summer. During winter, verdin will build another nest but roost alone. These roosting nests will also be enclosed but are insulated with thicker materials to help them stay warm during cold winter nights. The winter roosting nests reduce the energy required to stay warm by 50%. Verdin may build more than two nests a year. One pair of verdin in Arizona was observed building 11 nests in one year.   Verdin are non-migratory birds that are fairly common in the Sonoran desert. They have adapted well to urbanization but, recently, their numbers have dropped drastically due to habitat loss. Planting native trees and shrubs in your yard can offer a much-needed oasis for these small songbirds.   Bird song provided by Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology recorded by Stephen Chase.

We’re back baby, and I’m currently in smokey California but this week, I’ll be in Boston for the foreseeable future. What a trip! Today we have Chris Robb to talk about one of the blind spots I have in the food industry, stocking shelves or merchandising. I’m probably not doing the description justice, but it’s the workhorses that not only coordinate putting items on the store shelves but also how to strategize the best way to promote your product and these guys don’t just wing it, they give you data to make smarter decisions. But it doesn’t stop there. Chris is an entrepreneur, specifically in the CPG industry and his story is fascinating. Mainly because even as a baby, he’s been surrounded by food businesses and has gone through the evolution of the food industry in such a hands-on way. A lot of sage advice for aspiring and current food entrepreneurs. We also talk about the fact that sometimes, it’s ok for an entrepreneur to join a corporate job and your skills might be more suited because you think just a bit differently. Show Notes Neal Gottlieb from Three Twins Ice Cream What do you do?: I manage a full service retail company that tocks other company’s shelves Generally we don’t get companies into stores but we’re in charge after that Head Quarter Call: A bigger strategy that involves multiple stores Our job is to restock and give visibility in the store shelves Filling voids: authorized but not there. A big misstep for products Go Spot Check software Have you ever had a promo that fell flat?: Yea, personally. My own company had the wrong tags and didn’t have anyone to fix it How do you talk to companies?: Mainly through the headquarter calls, you set up the promos. We also do a lot of data and share with the company How do you make a good relationship with your retailer?: Sell a lot of product but also make them a priority. These guys want to grow too. Accounts that are small but matter, for example Berkeley Bowl Rainbow Groceries Gus’ Market Value of small store, high volumes This industry is really unique is that people do care and it’s a people forward business Did your parents work in the food industry?: Yes, they hustled. My dad sold rice in the back of a Lynx and my Mom was in the deli while I was a baby I’ve been to every Expo West since 2003. How do you predict timing?: It’s hard. Our shrub business for instance had too much sugar in a low-sugar age. In almond milk, we nailed the timing. The way we started almond milk is when a buyer from Whole Foods asked us to make a new almond milk. A huge opportunity for emerging entrepenuers is through the buyers’ insights Why did you decide to work for a company?: I fell in love with a nitty-gritty profession that Dirty Hands did. High Touch Why does your food job rock?: Working for an amazing culture How is the pandemic affecting what you do?: We’re still helping stores continuing to thrive. When stores are overwhelmed, the whole team helps out the stores. Suprisingly, we see sustained lift. The Sales are general higher actually in retail Aluminum Cans in Shortage Advice for startups: don’t create a me-too product. Find an inspiration Baa-Chan’s Sauce A startup is a seed. She new she wanted to start a company that encompassed her love of food and passion for ingredients; however, many markets in the beverage industry had become saturated. Thats when she noticed a gap in the market...premium chai tea-based beverages. Amy took it one step further by acquiring single sourced spices which are carefully chosen from around the world. Each spice is cupped to test for flavor profile, natural sweetness, and body." The time and energy Amy invests into carefully choosing superior ingredients is immediately noticeable when tasting through the Dona line, which also includes some amazingly balanced sodas. http://RunningAFEVER.com Caloric restriction (CR) is a reduction in caloric intake of 20-50% without malnutrition. NOT STARVING! There are no long-term benefits to starving :-). There's not even a long term. The process we are concerned with is called hormesis, which is when the body goes into defense mode, abating some aging processes. There is no definitive answer on how CR works. But quite a bit of research has been conducted. A 2017 report on primate study found fewer age-related disorders in CR primates. Since the 1930's CR in rats has shown increased lifespan. Suprisingly, CR has been found to preserves muscle tissue in primates. The longevity is not just due to fat reduction, which is insignificant factor. 1200 calories, she says Dr. Anne Brunet, PhD on the Standord University YouTube channel, is hard to achieve, but is in the optimal range for CR. CR has also been found in many of the Blue Zones (see episode 128). Since true CR is difficult to achieve while getting all the energy and nutrients you need, there is research on how to mimic the benefits of CR. One way is through intermittent fasting. An National Institute on Aging study found that fasting increases lifespan regardless of diet. One popular IF diet is the 5:2 diet, 5 days of normal caloric intake, followed by 2 days of 500-600 calories per day. There are also compounds called Caloric Restriction Mimetics (CRM's) that may provide the benefits of CR in supplementation. Here are some of them: Rapamycin, a compound found in soil on easter island (named after local name of that place) increases longevity in mice and other organisms. Aspirin: an NIH report says aspirin improves autphagy in mice. Autophagy is a detox process to clean out dead cells and make new ones. This is just another reason to take aspirin, recommended to prevent cardiovascular disease. Metformin is an anti-diabetic drug that comes from french lilac plants. It increases insulin sensitivity, making the liver produce less glucose. This reduces glycation, which is a kind of body fueling-gone-wild, and is associated with aging. Resveratrol is found in skin of grapes, and is also what people take to get the "red wine benefit" without drinking. It is also an anti-inflamatory. Wikipedia is critical of longevity claims, and says resveratrol has not increased longevity in rats in any study. NAD+ is another one, and for an in-depth look at this, go back and listen to episode #125. Gynostemma pentaphyllum (G. pentaphyllum) supplementation in humans has been shown to exert effects seen in CR, such as improved glucose metabolism and reduced body weight. There are detriments. The big one is risk of malnutrition. There was a very dangerous Minnesota Starvation Experiment 1944 conducted on WWII concientious objectors. The results included anemia, edema, muscle wasting, weakness, neurological deficits, dizziness, irritability, lethargy, and depression. CR can interfere with growth processes, and should not be tried by anyone who is under the age of 21 or pregnant. Also, CR in people with a lower than normal BMI has an increased mortality rate. The bottom line is that like blue zone observations, CR seems to be a factor in longevity, but it can be harmful if not done correctly. Beware of the dangers, especially malnutritious. Trying to figure out how to be adequately (or better OPTIMALLY) nourished is not something I've found easy to do.   https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/mindlift Kasper van der Meulen is an author and lifestyle adventurer. He went from being overweight, burnt out and unhappy, to developing what he calls "superhuman focus, fitness and personal freedom". The guy is actually pretty dang interesting... ...for example, he put himself through numerous experiments and challenges, optimized his lifestyle, conquered the cold, ran ultramarathons on his bare feet, tested countless diets, read a ton of scientific literature and explored as many esoteric practices he could find. With over ten thousand hours of experience in teaching science, self-mastery and innovation, he decided to demystify and methodize these principles in a fun and bitesized manner. As a final test of his focus, he wrote his new book within 30 days, so that he would have to practice everything he preaches. Suprisingly, he book “” became an Amazon best seller. Kasper now travels the world on a mission to teach others to be the healthiest, happiest and strongest version of themselves through transformative experiences and down-to-earth scientific understanding. He is the head-teacher of the Wim Hof Academy, he runs experiential retreats in extreme nature and he trains elite performers and professional athletes. All while keeping a playful and creative approach to self-optimization. Is the MacGuffin truly interchangable, and how does it impact on your character writing? Stu and Chas are joined by a special guest - Scriptmag contributor Brad Johnson - to discuss how the choice of the MacGuffin can impact on the quality of an action/adventure film. To test this thesis, our heroes compare the auspicious originals of two iconic franchise with their, um, less-than-auspicious 4th instalments (in other words we compare RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK with KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL and THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL with ON STRANGER TIDES) as well as look at two recent & original entries into the genre, namely NATIONAL TREASURE and PRINCE OF PERSIA. Our heroes uncover how key the relationship between the protagonist and the MacGuffin is and how this can impact on writing in any genre, not just action/adventure. Suprisingly, Brad brings up STAR WARS before Stu does...
