In which the Mister joins me in reviewing THE LOST LEONARDO (2021), from director Andreas Koefoed and writing credits attributed to Andreas Dalsgaard, Christian Kirk Muff, Andreas Koefoed, Mark Monroe and Duska Zagorac. The film follows the story of how a painting found in New Orleans that sold for $1,175.00 then made an epic journey to ultimately end up at auction and selling for $450 million dollars. The story talks to critics, historians, a restorer who winds up more invested in the story's outcome, among a litany of others who live in the art world. The story covers the span of a few years but the mystery of the Salvator Mundi, in which you never really get confirmation if it is a true artwork from the master, Leonardo DaVinci, and there is suspicion of who ultimately owns the painting although many facts seem to point to a Saudi Arabian prince now being its owner. The film has a run time of 1 h 36 m and is rated PG-13 and is available on the Starz app but also for rent on many other platforms. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Ten years ago, ‘Salvator Mundi' was unveiled to the world, its owners insisting it was a long lost Leonardo Da Vinci painting (as in, the guy who painted the Mona Lisa). It sold at auction for $450million, making history as the most expensive piece of art ever purchased. But what most people don't know is, this precious ‘historical' painting had been found in a garage and bought in a small US town for $1100, before being extensively ‘restored' by an expert in Da Vinci artworks. A lot of the art world is convinced it's fake and a waste of money, so… did someone waste half a billion bucks buying a fake Leonardo Da Vinci?  Skip straight to the story: approx 34:51 We give you just the gist, but if you want more, there's this: Watch the 2021 documentary The Lost Leonardo (it's on several platforms, take your pick, here's the link for Google Play) https://play.google.com/store/movies/details?id=dA9Uy-Mb_Kc.P Watch the other 2021 documentary Saviour for Sale(You'll need a VPN and a few detective skills to track this one down on the BBC…) Read The Last Leonardo by Ben Lewis https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/45319160-the-last-leonardo Check out the painting and the restoration process on Diane Modestini's website https://salvatormundirevisited.com/Copies Watch art critic Jerry Saltz SLAM the painting as he outlines his reasons for believing it's not by Leonardo https://www.vulture.com/2017/11/christies-says-this-painting-is-by-leonardo-i-doubt-it.html Check out some excerpts from the book that the Louvre denied existed… and was then leaked to the press https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2021/04/13/what-the-louvres-scientific-examinations-of-the-salvator-mundi-really-revealedaccording-to-the-museums-own-book http://artwatch.org.uk/tag/the-disappeared-louvre-catalogue/ Listen to this interview with Robert Simon, one of the men who “discovered” the Salvator Mundi http://artlawpodcast.com/2020/09/14/revisiting-the-salvator-mundi-by-probably-possibly-leonardo-da-vinci-with-robert-simon/ Read The Guardian's review of the Channel 4 doco 'The Man With A Penis On His Arm' https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2022/may/03/the-man-with-a-penis-on-his-arm-review-tv-that-makes-you-proud-to-be-british  Get tickets to the Just The Gist LIVE shows! https://moretalent.com.au/tours/just-the-gist/ Follow us on Insta! @JustTheGistPodcast @RosieWaterland @JacobWilliamStanley Email us your suGISTions! justthegistpodcast@gmail.com See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Some are major motion pictures like Don't Look Up, Nightmare Alley or even Disney's Encanto, but we discuss quite a few lesser known flicks on streaming services: Sasquatch, Seaspiracy, the The Lost Leonardo, and House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths. Tune in for our thoughts on these films and info on where you can see them. And boy do we have thoughts!

Die Dokumentation "The Lost Leonardo" zeichnet die Geschichte dieses Gemäldes nach, die auch eine Geschichte von Streben nach Ruhm, Geld und Macht ist. Anke Sterneborg hat den Film gesehen.

Kathleen opens the show drinking a Basic Bitch Blonde Ale from Altamont Beer Works in Livermore, CA. She shows off her new Bud Light Christmas lights and ornament sent to her by her friends at Anheuser Busch, and her vintage ceramic Christmas tree that she's placed on her desk to kick off the holiday season. She shares the fun that she had during recent shows in West Virginia and Northern California, and thanks Termites who brought gifts to her shows including various bottles of Ranch dressing and tons of delicious red wine.“GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen celebrates that Hidden Valley has released a series of holiday-themed Ranch bottles, samples Gingerbread Cookie Kit Kat bars, which she likes but prefers the original candy. She them moves on to taste Zesty Ranch Blasted Dipping Sauce, which she likes and describes that it “makes the back of your eyeballs explode.” Kathleen then tastes Tangy Ranch Whisps cheese crisps, which she doesn't think taste like Ranch at all, but DOES like the parmesan version. KATHLEEN'S QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen gives an update on the Court, advising that all of Queen Dolly's holiday line with Williams Sonoma have sold out online, and Queen Cher has a new lotion in time for Christmas. Queen Stevie battles a new wave of criticism from former bandmate Lindsey Buckingham, simply ignoring his petulance which Kathleen applauds. UPDATES: Kathleen gives updates on the NFL's legal battle with the city of St. Louis, Elizabeth Holmes' trial winds down, MH360 “found” again, and Kansas City is getting 30 new Whataburger restaurants. SNOWED IN A PUB: Kathleen reads a story from England where dozens of customers were snowed into the Tan Hill Inn for 4 days when Britain's highest altitude pub was cut off by a blizzard. The Inn is situated approximately 270 miles north of London.JOEL OSTEEN'S MONEY WALL: Kathleen scoffs as she reads an article advising that a plumber who was contracted by Joel Olsteen found hundreds of envelopes of cash in a wall, which are believed to be connected to the 2014 theft of about $600,000 from the mega-church.REAL-LIFE RARE MOBY DICK SPOTTED: Kathleen reads an article announcing that a rare white sperm whale, like the one depicted in the literary classic "Moby Dick," has been spotted off the coast of Jamaica by sailors aboard a Dutch oil tanker.FAKE ARM PRESENTED FOR COVID VACCINE: Kathleen laughs at the absurdity behind an article from Italy where an anti-vaxxer attempted to dodge getting the COVID-19 vaccine by wearing a fake arm and now faces fraud charges in Italian court. SNAKE INFESTATION BURNS HOUSE: Kathleen is dismayed reading an article about a couple in Maryland who burned their house down while trying to smoke out a snake infestation. They tried to use smoke from coals, which were placed to too close to combustible materials that ignited the house. FRIDA AUCTION SETS RECORD: Kathleen is a massive fan of art and Frida Kahlo and is thrilled to read that the Kahlo self-portrait "Diego and I" has sold at auction for $35M, the highest price ever paid for a painting by a Latin American artist. Kathleen applauds the sale, congratulating Frida for triumphing over her ex, Diego Rivera, albeit after her death. GRAMMAR EXPERTS TARGET WEAKNESS: Kathleen provides her own colorful commentary when reading a study from grammar experts regarding 11 words and phrases that make an individual appear “weak” when used in conversation. RENT-A-HITMAN.COM GONE WRONG: Kathleen laughs out loud reading an article about a Michigan woman who tried to hire an assassin on a fake website and was caught by authorities. WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen recommends watching “100 Foot Wave” on HBO Max or Hulu, “The Lost Leonardo” on Amazon Prime, and ANY Hallmark or Lifetime Christmas movie.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Paintings by the great masters of the Renaissance are revered around the world. They are also exceedingly rare. THE LOST LEONARDO is a documentary about finding, restoring, marketing, and selling an alleged “lost” painting of Jesus Christ by Leonardo Da Vinci. The once damaged painting is titled “Salvador Mundi,” or “Savior of the World.” The documentary details how the painting was found, then beautifully restored by a famous female art restorer. It shows how the painting was sold for about $80 to a shifty Swiss middleman, who procured it for a shifty Russian oligarch. The oligarch paid the middleman $127 million. Eventually, the painting is sold for a whopping $450 million at Christie's auction house to Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince.

In 2005 a small auction house in New Orleans sold a painting for just over a thousand dollars. On taking possession, the new owners were blown away. They began a process of establishing the painting's provenance, which lead them to believe it was the Salvator Mundi, a long-lost masterpiece by Renaissance painter Leonardo da Vinci.  In 2017, the same painting became the most expensive ever sold at auction. An anonymous buyer paying 450.3 million US dollars, even though to this day, there are still genuine questions about its authenticity.  The road from discovery to record breaking sale is a story like none other in the art world, and is now the subject of a new documentary The Lost Leonardo and can be seen in cinemas in level 2 areas.Evan Beard, Bank of America's global arts services executive is something of a Salvator Mundi insider, and features in the documentary. The title suggests something equally sweet and horrible and art can be both. There is certainly a lot of art and artists on this week's movie review episode. There are influencers and a photographer in the remake of She's All That (He's All That). The music and life of Guy Clark is featured in a new documentary (Without Getting Caught or Killed). There's the story of a domino artist named Lily Hevesh (Lily Topples the World) and a guy who is good with numbers but bad with social interaction and fumigation (Mosquito State). But there is also another relationship on pandemic lockdown (Together) and another film about the final days of Ted Bundy (No Man of God). It's enough to want to get away with John Cena and Lil Rel Howery (Vacation Friends). But wait, there's more art in the tragic story of a beloved painter (Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed) and the whole damn shady world of art is exposed in a fascinating new documentary (The Lost Leonardo). Finally, there is another artist featured in Nia DaCosta's updating of Bernard Rose & Clive Barker's Candyman. Does the film have the right palette? Summer is winding down and so are several TV shows. Including "The White Lotus." We all watched the season finale on HBO and, uh, well, listen in to hear what we thought. But there's lots more including "Bring Your Own Brigade" the must talked about in investigation into our landscape's hidden fire stories and on-the-ground experiences of firefighters and residents struggling through deadly fires. There's also the Netflix series "Hit and Run" in which happily married man's life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a mysterious hit-and-run accident in Tel Aviv. Neil talks about the "Field of Dreams" baseball game based on the baseball movie or something like that. There's also "The Lost Leonardo," a documentary about the mystery surrounding the Salvator Mundi, the first painting by Leonardo da Vinci to be discovered for more than a century, which has now seemingly gone missing. Bill Bregoli thinks he knows where it is and he'll tell you about it. He also tells us about the quirky new series "Reservation Dogs." Bill McCuddy fills us in on a radio program starring Lucille Ball as well as "The Final Purge," which he watched with his daughter...make of that what you will. As always, we're brought to you by The Accutron Show, so listen in!

Andreas Koefoed's THE LOST LEONARDO centers on the sale of Salvator Mundi (Savior of the World), a portrait of Christ purportedly by Leonardo da Vinci, which in 2017 was auctioned by Christie's for $450 million, a world record for any work of art. The bizarre story of its provenance, the intrigue surrounding its multi-year restoration, and the worldwide controversy regarding its authenticity are all recounted in a non-stop narrative conflating art world drama, international politics, and high-level financial shenanigans. Art dealers, curators, FBI and CIA agents, journalists, restorers, historians, a Russian oligarch, a Saudi prince, and the director of the Louvre are drawn into this exciting and revealing documentary that exposes the frictions inherent in the sale of great art. Unravelling the hidden agendas of the richest men and most powerful art institutions in the world, THE LOST LEONARDO reveals how vested interests in the Salvator Mundi are of such tremendous power that truth becomes secondary. As its price soars, so do questions about its authenticity: is this painting really by Leonardo da Vinci? Director Andreas Koefoed (Ballroom Dancer, The Arms Drop and At Home In The World) joins us to talk about tracking down the story behind this unbelievable story and if some of the remaining mysteries explored in the documentary will ever be fully revealed or understood. FBI analyst Bill Hagmaier (Elijah Wood), emboldened by this new philosophy, sat down with famed serial killer Ted Bundy (Luke Kirby) for several interviews from 1984-1989 inside Florida State Prison, in hopes of figuring out why Bundy murdered more than 20 victims. What started out as a straightforward informational assignment gradually turned personal for Hagmaier, whose feelings about his charismatic subject grew more complicated with each conversation. Is it possible to empathize with evil?Studies of Ted Bundy's life and crimes have been in vogue lately, but this two-character study from director Amber Sealey is the most sober and psychologically intricate look at the killer's story yet. With a pair of dynamic performances at its center, particularly that of an exceptional Kirby as Bundy, No Man of God is riveting in its intimate chamber piece structure. Sealey and company, including writer Kit Lesser, who based the screenplay on real-life transcripts, don't glamourize the oft-romanticized Bundy; instead, No Man of God deftly balances emotional complexity and clear-eyed truthfulness. —Matt BaroneRelease Date: In theaters and available on demand and digital August 27, 2021Directed by: Amber SealeyScreenplay by: Kit LesserStarring: Elijah Wood, Luke Kirby, Aleksa Palladino, and Robert PatrickDistributed by: RLJE FilmsGenre: Drama, ThrillerRunning Time: 1 hour 40 minutesNot RatedIndia Sweets and SpicesWebsite: TribecaTribeca Film Festival Synopsis: On her summer break from college, outspoken Indian American freshman Alia returns home to her wealthy New Jersey suburb and for the first time pushes back against her parents' pretentious lifestyle. After a year at UCLA, she's eager to trade in the family's lavish Saturday-night dinner parties and the gossiping “aunties” of her community for a more meaningful existence—even if she doesn't quite know what that looks like yet. When Alia meets Varun (Rish Shah), the handsome son of local shopkeepers, she impulsively invites him to her straitlaced mother's upcoming extravagant soiree, and accidentally uncovers a pair of family secrets in the process. In this fresh take on the classic coming of age story, writer-director Geeta Malik brings a tongue in cheek sense of humor and an acute understanding of class privilege to an award winning script. And actress Sophia Ali delivers a charming performance as the rebellious leading lady who confronts her parents' values in order to understand her own evolving identity. —Lucy MukerjeeNo release date yetDirected by: Geeta MalikScreenplay by: Geeta MalikStarring: Sophia Ali, Manisha Koirala, Adil Hussain, Deepti Gupta, Rish Shah, and Ved SapruGenre: Comedy, Drama, RomanceRunning Time: 1 hour 41 minutes12 Mighty OrphansWebsite: Official SiteTribeca Film Festival Synopsis: 12 Mighty Orphans tells the true story of the Mighty Mites, the football team of a Fort Worth orphanage who, during the Great Depression, went from playing without shoes—or even a football—to playing for the Texas state championships. Over the course of their winning season these underdogs and their resilient spirit became an inspiration to their city, state, and an entire nation in need of a rebound, even catching the attention of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The architect of their success was Rusty Russell, a legendary high school coach who shocked his colleagues by giving up a privileged position so he could teach and coach at an orphanage. Few knew Rusty's secret: that he himself was an orphan. Recognizing that his scrawny players couldn't beat the other teams with brawn, Rusty developed innovative strategies that would come to define modern football.Release Date: Opens in Texas Friday, June 11, 2021 and everywhere Friday, June 18, 2021Directed by: Ty RobertsScreenplay by: Ty Roberts, Lane Garrison, Kevin MeyerStarring: Luke Wilson, Vinessa Shaw, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Wayne Knight, Jake Austin Walker, Lane Garrison, Levi Dylan, Jacob Lofland, Treat Williams, and Scott HazeDistributed by: Sony Pictures ClassicsGenre: Drama, History, SportsRunning Time: 1 hour 58 minutesRated PG-13Werewolves WithinWebsite: Official SiteTribeca Film Festival Synopsis: Forest ranger Finn Wheeler (Veep's Sam Richardson) is jazzed about his latest assignment: temporarily living inside The Beaverfield Inn, a cozy, woods-bound nook run by nice folks and frequented by Beaverfield's colorful array of residents, for the duration of a new pipeline construction project. Little does he realize, his timing couldn't be worse. For one, a major snowstorm is set to rid him and the inn's occupants of communication with the outside world. And two, something is on the loose and brutally murdering Beaverfield's denizens—perhaps something lycanthropic. As the body count rises, it's up to Finn to play the reluctant hero and figure what, or who, is shrinking Beaverfield's population.Building on the horror-comedy fun of his 2020 debut, Scare Me (a Shudder Exclusive), director Josh Ruben expands both his storytelling scope and offbeat hilarity quotient with this delightfully macabre whodunit/monster movie, based on Ubisoft's popular VR game of the same name. It's also the perfect leading man vehicle for Richardson, whose lovable everyman charms complement a strong cast of TV comedy fan favorites, including AT&T commercial fixture Milana Vayntrub, Casual's Michaela Watkins and What We Do in the Shadows' Harvey Guillén. —Matt BaroneRelease Date: Opens in theaters and drive-ins Friday, June 25, 2021; Everywhere you rent movies Friday, July 2, 2021Directed by: Josh RubenScreenplay by: Mishna WolffStarring: Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub, Michaela Watkins, Cheyenne Jackson, Glenn Fleshler, and Harvey GuillénDistributed by: IFC FilmsGenre: Comedy, Horror, MysteryRunning Time: 1 hour 37 minutesRated RFalse PositiveWebsite: HuluTribeca Film Festival Synopsis: After difficult struggles with fertility, loving couple Lucy (Ilana Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) seem to have finally found their potential savior in the charming and world-renowned reproductive specialist Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But as their dreams begin to come true and hope transforms to happiness, cracks start to appear in the façade of normalcy, sending the now-expectant mother into a spiral of suspicion that threatens her grasp on reality. A clever and chilling look at gender roles and the notion of unconditional trust, False Positive delivers an unexpectedly twisted tale of modern family troubles. Boasting a solid ensemble cast, including a memorable turn from Gretchen Mol as Hindle's loyal nurse, director John Lee has truly found a kindred spirit in leading lady and co-writer Glazer. Longtime collaborators on the acclaimed Broad City, the two have shifted gears entirely here, abandoning the jokes but maintaining the edge for this genre-bending thriller about the perils of parenthood. —Loren HammondsRelease Date: Available on Hulu Friday, June 25, 2021Directed by: John LeeScreenplay by: John Lee and Ilana GlazerStarring: Ilana Glazer, Justin Theroux, Gretchen Mol, Sophia Bush, Zainab Jah, and Pierce BrosnanDistributed by: A24 and HuluGenre: Horror, ThrillerRunning Time: 1 hour 32 minutesRated RFeatured Documentaries:WolfgangWebsite: DisneyTribeca Film Festival Synopsis: From acclaimed filmmaker and Tribeca alum David Gelb (Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Chef's Table) comes another mouthwatering delight of a film about one of the first “celebrity chefs” to rule the scene and a pioneer in the world of California cuisine, Wolfgang Puck. Pushing beyond the sunny, superstar persona, Gelb follows Puck as he revisits his birthplace in Austria, revealing an abusive childhood that pushed him to flee home and fight for a life of his own as a teenager. With Puck steadily gaining life confidence and cooking know-how in his homeland, France and, eventually, America, he would officially launch a storied career in Los Angeles with the opening of the celebrity hot spot of the 80s and 90s, Spago. Though Puck's inventive cuisine has remained the core of his popularity, his charming, energetic persona is what pushed him to a stratosphere of fame that would eventually include countless TV appearances, cookbooks and restaurants that span the globe. Using a wealth of archival material and eye-dazzling cinematography of Puck's truly mouth-watering food, Gelb expertly brings us into the kitchen—and the mind—of this obsessively hard-working and inspirational virtuoso. That day, Salvator Mundi was authenticated as being the creation of Da Vinci himself, and thus, one of the most beguiling and perplexing stories of the 21st century was set into motion.Unfolding as a gripping, real-life art thriller, The Lost Leonardo pulls back the curtain to uncover the stranger than fiction story behind how a Salvator Mundi painting went from bargain-basement replication to setting the world record as the most expensive painting ever sold at auction, weighing in at an astonishing $450 million. Director Andreas Keofoed positions this story squarely at the intersection of capitalism and myth-making, posing the question: is this multi-million dollar painting actually by Leonardo, or do certain powerful players simply want it to be? The Lost Leonardo detangles how a painting became a pawn in a geopolitical game played by the world's wealthiest and most powerful people, ultimately revealing how vested interests became all-important, and the truth secondary. —Shayna WeingastRelease Date: Opens NY & LA Friday, August 13, 2021Directed by: Andreas KoefoedWritten by: Duska Zagorac, Andreas Dalsgaard, Mark Monroe, Christian Kirk Muff, and Andreas KoefoedFeaturing: Dianne Modestini, Yves Bouvier, Evan Beard, Robert Simon, Alexander Parish, Warren Adelson, Luke Syson, Martin Kemp, Frank Zöllner, Maria Teresa Fiorio, Jacques Franck, Kenny Schachter, Bruce Lamarche, Jerry Saltz, Robert K Wittman, Alexandra Bregman, Georgina Adam, Alison Cole, Bradley Hope, Doug Patteson, Stephane Lacroix, Antoine Harari, Didier Rykner, David D. Known for his unapologetic and charismatic stage presence, James has been celebrated for his massive catalog of such hit songs as "Mary Jane" and "Superfreak." In this definitive portrait, acclaimed filmmaker Sacha Jenkins examines the brain beneath the braids, charting his soaring artistic success and eventual personal decline. Sexuality, race, and the tumultuous stew of American culture all contributed to the transformation of the songwriter born as James Ambrose Johnson into the larger-than-life performer forever known as Rick James. Against a soundtrack that compels you to get out of your seat from the opening moments, Jenkins approaches his subject not with reverence, but instead with indisputable care as he delves into the circumstances that birthed this one-of-a-kind personality. Surprising and enlightening, Jenkins' film still pulls no punches with its exploration of James' tragic obsessions. Comprised of rare archival performances, animation, interviews with family and collaborators and recorded conversations with James himself, this crowd-pleasing film proves the impact that this undeniable force had on American music and popular culture. —Loren Hammonds*Part of the Juneteenth programmingComing soon to ShowtimeDirected by: Sacha JenkinsWritten by: Sacha Jenkins, Steve Rivo, and Jason PollardDistributed by: Showtime NetworksGenre: Documentary, MusicRunning Time: 1 hour 51 minutes See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
