We have published 120 episodes since 2019. For this new season, we thought we would look back on some of the highlights of our conversations and choose 20 episodes that resonated with veterans, service members, military families, and the civilians who support them. But first up, you'll hear from some of the folks at Home Base who wake up every day with the same mission in mind, no matter what they do at the Center of Excellence in the Navy Yard and beyond.Over the next twenty weeks, we will share these staff conversations I had with some of the hard-working professionals at Home Base who help treat the invisible wounds of veterans and military families. For this episode, you will hear a brief conversation with Home Base Marine Veteran Alexander Hohl, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, followed by one of the earlier episodes, in which Ron sat with the US Army Colonel and Combat Surgeon Dr. David King and Red Sox legend David "Big Papi" Ortiz.  Boston just celebrated the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, and we felt it a good time to re-share the episode that remembers the Boston Marathon bombing and the inspiration Big Papi brought to the city during that time. Many thanks to Alexander Hohl for all his work at Home Base to support this mission to stomp stigma and treat the invisible wounds of veterans and military families.Run To Home Base: Join Ron and his team and sign up individually or on another team at the 16th annual Run To Home Base on July 26th, 2025, at Fenway Park! From sniper school to urban warfare instructor to DC security assignments, George's Marine Corps career is filled with intense and emotional moments that every American should hear. This is not just a war story. Drawing on Nietzsche, Mishima, and the ideals of the warrior poet, we explore how strength, aesthetics, and discipline shape a life of purpose. We also discuss the alienation of modern men, the consequences of comfort and decadence, and why rediscovering struggle might be the key to a deeper existence. What does it mean to live with virtue? The story of 1600+ victims on January 6, 2021, is captured by Jesus Dellamora (JD) Rivera. JD was one of many arrested soon after the peaceful protest at the Capital on that day. This attack against these peaceful protestors was a 'deep state' attempt to undermine the will of the American voters. It did not happen in a vacuum. JD was an 8-year Marine Veteran. He was at the Capital Hill Steps providing video for a local television station. Nonetheless, just 2 weeks later 20+ FBI agents arrested JD in his home in Pensacola, Florida. 8 months later he left prison, with the first two months spent in solitary confinement for a misdemeanor charge of 'trespassing'. His military training and faith kept him strong. Many others were not so lucky. On January 20, 2025, President Trump provided all with a full pardon. His story tells us about the best of America and the worst. We MUST seek criminal promoting the unjust prosecution of 1600+ peaceful protestors! In his award-winning book of short stories, Surrender, Brian O'Hare delves into the complexities of the American hero myth and its impact on his own life. As the son of a larger-than-life Marine officer, O'Hare was drawn to the allure of military service, seeking to emulate his father's legacy. However, after witnessing the devastating effects of war on his father's health, O'Hare began to question the validity of the hero myth. He realized that the idealized image of the American hero, often portrayed in Hollywood films and popular culture, was far removed from the realities of combat. Brian O'Hare is a graduate of the US Naval Academy, former Marine Corps officer and Persian Gulf War veteran.  Currently, he's an award-winning writer and filmmaker living in Los Angeles. His work has appeared in War, Literature and the Arts; Hobart,Electric Literature and others, and has been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes. Most recently, National Book Award winner Phil Klay awarded Brian Syracuse University Press' 2021 Veterans Writing Award for Surrender. Through his writing, O'Hare deconstructs the myth of the team captain and the Marine, exposing the flaws and vulnerabilities that lie beneath the surface. He explores the psychological toll that war takes on individuals, the sacrifices they make, and the lasting scars they bear. O'Hare's journey is a personal one, but it also resonates with a broader cultural shift. As society evolves, so too does our understanding of heroism. The traditional notions of masculinity and military prowess are being challenged, and new definitions of heroism are emerging. In Surrender, O'Hare invites us to question our own assumptions about what it means to be a hero. He suggests that true heroism lies not in physical strength or military glory, but in the courage to face our own mortality, to embrace our imperfections, and to strive for a more just and compassionate world. As O'Hare reflects on his father's legacy and his own experiences, he grapples with the question of what he will pass on to his son. He recognizes that the American hero myth is a powerful force, but he also believes that it is essential to challenge its limitations and to create a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of heroism. Through his writing, O'Hare hopes to inspire others to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery and to question the myths that shape our society. By demythologizing the American hero myth, he opens up the possibility for a more authentic and meaningful definition of heroism to emerge. Christian details his journey into entrepreneurship, running his own company even after joining a corporation as an officer and later ,a C-level executive. Leveraging his combined experience in entrepreneurship, the military, and the corporate world, Christian now provides strategic advising and coaching for Fortune 500 CEOs. He also contrasts the military's approach to leadership with that of the corporate world, highlighting their key differences.
