Clearer Thinking with Spencer Greenberg
Simple and effective methods for helping people that nonprofits often ignore (with Kanika Bahl)

Clearer Thinking with Spencer Greenberg

Read the full transcript here. Why do nonprofits often ignore the simplest, most obvious solutions for helping the world? Why do some problems get a lot of attention while others — often of equal or greater importance — go completely unaddressed? Why is behavior change so hard? When should or shouldn't NGOs collaborate with governments? Why are deworming effects not as immediately noticeable as might be expected? What sorts of incentive structures surround charities? How can NGOs and nonprofits gain the financial flexibility necessary to make better strategic bets and more principled decisions? What's more important for drawing in donors: stories or statistics? How do (or should) nonprofits measure the long-term economic effects on individuals of their interventions? How can you support the organizations and interventions mentioned in this episode?Kanika Bahl is CEO and President of Evidence Action where she has been on the Board since 2015. She is also a Trustee of Anthropic's Long-Term Benefit Trust. Previously she served as Managing Director at Results for Development (R4D), where she established and led the Market Dynamics practice. The practice has increased access to products such as childhood pneumonia treatments and malaria bed nets for millions of individuals in Africa and Asia. Prior to R4D, Kanika served as an Executive Vice President at the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) where she established greenfield operations in 17 African countries. She launched and led a $400M, 33-country public-private facility focused on driving access to new HIV/AIDS drugs and diagnostics. One of our favorite things is the impact of great employers on individuals, small towns, and the overall culture of the communities they operate within, and this episode is all about what happens when an amazing work culture fosters amazing things outside of the workplace. Amanda Gregory and Joe House both work for a manufacturing company called Design Ready Controls and co-founded MAKE (Manufacturing, a Kid's Experience) in 2023 as a way to foster awareness about and interest in manufacturing in a way kids can understand. MAKE is about showing kids what kinds of possibilities exist in the manufacturing space and helping parents who work in manufacturing share what they do with their days in a kid-friendly way. Although entirely separate from their “day job,” the collaborative, open culture of Design Ready Controls directly influenced Amanda and Joe's efforts and takes workforce development and passion to a whole new level, and we're here for it. About MAKE: MAKE was founded in 2023 by Amanda Gregory and Joe House to educate children about manufacturing. The MAKE platform began with sharing stories about manufacturing through Blake Explores Manufacturing. Now with a monthly newsletter, Future Makers, they continue to inspire through building activities and manufacturing tours & experiences. About Joe: Joe started with Design Ready Controls in 2022 as Chief Commercial Officer, working alongside sales, marketing, and supply chain teams to strengthen our industry-leading customer and supplier partnerships. Prior to joining the team, Joe spent 9 years in sales leadership at an electrical distributor, where he worked as both a supplier and customer of Design Ready Controls. Joe graduated from the University of Saint Thomas in 2013 with degrees in Mathematical Economics and Business Management. About Amanda: Amanda joined the Design Ready Controls team in 2015, starting in office management and 5S initiatives. She quickly advanced to take on leadership roles in marketing and now leads marketing, sales development, internal communications, and office management. Amanda earned a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication with a minor in Marketing from Winona State University. Her professional background includes account and project management, as well as marketing experience in the produce and manufacturing industries. In this episode, we cover: What MAKE is and how it started The culture at Design Ready Controls and how it relates to MAKE Why supporting passion is so important in cultivating the next generation How a company's culture can completely change the perception of its industry Links + Resources Mentioned MAKE Website where you can learn more, subscribe to Future Makers or purchase Blake Explores Manufacturing: www.makepublishing.comMAKE on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/makepublishingllc MAKE on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/make_publishing MAKE on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/make-publishing/ Community Venture Network: https://brookshireco.com/services/community-venture-network/ New Segment Alert! No win is too small—we want to hear it all, and we will be excessively enthusiastic about whatever it is! You can call in for your friends, too, because giving shout-outs is one of our favorite things.  “Solving Your Small-Town People Challenges”: Have a tough issue in your community? We want to help. Call in and tell us about your problem, and we'll solve it on an episode of the podcast. Want to remain anonymous? Totally cool, we can be all secretive and stuff. He has written more than a dozen books in Economic History, Political Economy, Development Economics, Business Economics, and Macroeconomics. He has also written several columns for the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) and the Mises Institute. Moreover, he published several scientific papers, notably in professional academic journals such as the Journal of Economics and Econometrics. In ‘‘The Moral Case for Capitalism'' we discuss how capitalism is not only moral, but the only moral option, all the alternatives being bad economic philosophies, lead to human perishment. Although it must be noted that neither of us is anarcho-capitalist in the Rothbardian sense, both of us support the intervention of the government in the economy and think of it as a necessary evil due to what we consider inherent inefficiencies of the market, or failures of these as in free riders, the incapacity of a decentralized system to articulate a proper response to external centralized threats or the inability of the market to internalize costs and benefits in certain areas, leading to overproduction of negative outcomes and underproduction of positive outcomes. Disruption, Dislocation & DetailsThis week's show is built around what you need to do and who you need to get help from when things go wrong before, during and after you buy or rent a home."I want to buy that house but should I be concerned it is in a flood zone?""The co-op apartment above me had a major plumbing issue and now my apartment and fine art has been ruined by water damage - now what?""I don't want to live here anymore. Can I break my lease and leave?"  Two experts that know about disturbance:John Allen is going to talk with us about some areas of insurance that affect our buyers and what we can do to point them in the direction about protecting their most important purchase. Chubb Insurance is a firm that has built a reputation for going all the way for their clients. What does all the way mean? I found on the Chubb website that they "will pay to have your home repaired or rebuilt to its original condition - even if the cost exceeds your policy limit". It makes me wonder how can they afford to do that? We are going to ask John some key questions about what do we need to know about insurance for ourselves and our clients especially these days. Our second guest, Phil Horigan, is the founder of LeaseBreak.com, the source of short-term furnished rentals in New York City. Before Leasebreak hit the scene in 2013, furnished short term rentals were also very difficult to find because there was no one place people could go to see the thousands of available furnished short term rentals at any given time. You had to look on multiple websites in order to find temporary housing, or ask every landlord if they would allow furnished short term rentals (95% said no). I served my country as soldier and now my community as a nurse. I was a cardiac progressive care charge nurse at Texas Health Resources in Fort Worth for about 3 years. Now I am VA Acute Med Surg Nurse at Dallas North Texas VA.  I have a 2013 BSN from The University of Texas at Arlington and am currently enrolled in their Family Nurse Practitioner Program. I have a board certification in medical surgical nursing. I hail from a family of nurses: Granma was med/surg; mom was pediatrics; dad was OB; brother is psych; cousin is OR; niece will graduate in May from ODU with her BSN.  A ‘military brat' to proud Army nurses, I began my journey as a cadet at the US Military Academy at West Point, NY. My military unit was mobilized for about 5 years to support Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. The Austrian Cult and Mathematical Economics with Ash Navabi

In this episode, Ash Navabi discusses whether the Austrian School of Economics is a cult and the value of mathematics in economic theory. Ash is an economics student at Ryerson University. Ash wrote an article responding to recent criticisms of the Austrian school by Keynesian bloggers Noah Smith and Paul Krugman. Krugman approvingly referenced Smith's attacks on the “hermetic system that is Austrians.” Just a week later he made the following telling comment about the economics mainstream: "And modern academic economics is very much an interlocking set of old-boy networks; to some extent this has become even more true since the decline of the journals, with most discourse taking place via working papers long before formal publication. I used to refer to the international trade circuit as the floating crap game — the same 30 or 40 people meeting in conferences all over the world, reading and citing each others’ work; it’s the same in each sub-field. And to some extent it’s inevitable: there’s so much stuff out there, and you have to filter somehow, so you mainly read stuff by people you know and people they tell you are worth reading." Ash was quick to point out that, by the logic of the people who deride Austrian economists as "cultish" because they interact mainly with one another, each of the "old-boy networks" Paul Krugman refers to (that is, each sub-field of mainstream economics) must also be a cult. Gary Becker, another Nobel Laureate, referred to the Austrian school as a cult in a letter to Walter Block. Becker's definition of a cult was "a small number of dedicated followers who speak mainly to each other, and interact little with let us call them mainstream economists.” This definition is problematic, to say the least. When people hear the word "cult," they don't think of Becker's dry definition but of animal sacrifice and mass suicide. The word "cult" also implies unquestioning devotion to the cult leaders, but modern Austrians frequently criticize Mises and Hayek, in highly un-cultish fashion. Ash also wrote an article on mathematical economics versus so-called "literary" economics. John Cochrane recently referred to non-mathematical economics as "literary," a mild slur that goes back at least as far as the 1940s when Mises responded to it in Human Action. The Austrian method is not "literary" in the sense of using airy prose and fuzzy logic, rather it uses a highly rigorous form of verbal logic to derive causal chains from the basic axioms of human action. Mathematical economics forces economists to start their analyses from unrealistic assumptions in order to put all problems in mathematically tractable terms. However rigorous the mathematics itself is, the foundation is flawed so the conclusions are flawed. Austrians conceive of economic theory as a descriptive science rather than a predictive one. That is, pure theory cannot tell you how the future will turn out, nor is a theory tested by its empirical predictions. An entrepreneur can have a true theory of how the economy works, and yet he can still make wrong predictions if he misjudges the actual factors at play. Ash can be found online at the Mises Canada blog page.
