There have been many impacts following the October 7 massacres. And while the negative side is well-established: Israel at war against an increasingly aggressive array of Iranian-backed terrorist groups, anti-Jewish hatred, Israel under attack diplomatically, and much more, there are also many uplifting stories. Stories like Justin Chow's: On October 6, he was a university student in Canada, from Hong Kong, minding his own business and pursuing his academic career. But the next day, everything changed for him. A light went off, so to speak, and suddenly, a conflict on the other side of the world, one which he had no personal connection with, became immensely personal to him. Justin, who just graduated from the University of Toronto, is a recent HRC/AVI Campus Media Fellow, and is now an Allyship Advisor with Allied Voices for Israel (AVI), and he joins us on our podcast this week. It was formally established in New York in 1941 to promote American involvement in World War II and the fight against fascism. From the beginning, Freedom House was notable for its bipartisan support. Freedom House's founders were prominent and influential leaders from the fields of business and labor, journalism, academia, and government. A central figure among its early leaders was First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Wendell Willkie, the Republican presidential nominee who ran against President Roosevelt in 1940, was also an ardent supporter and served as honorary co-chair along with Mrs. Roosevelt. Initially, the mission of Freedom House was to counter isolationism, a powerful force promoted by the America First Committee. At the time, ninety percent of American citizens were opposed to involvement in the European war, even as Nazi tanks rolled across the continent and concentration camps began to fill with people. The leaders of Freedom House argued that Hitler posed a grave threat to American security and values. Throughout North America, and indeed much of the Western world, college and university campuses are a fulcrum of anti-Israel activism and campaigning. These efforts can manifest through BDS (Boycott Divestment Sanctions) referendums, anti-Israel disinformation being spread in the classroom or by the student government, and also through campus media outlets. Claire Frankel knows this all too well. Claire is a Jewish student at McGill University in Montreal, and a Campus Media Fellow with HonestReporting Canada, and in March, she attempted to submit an opinion column, which discussed her views on a student club's attitudes towards Jews. But when she tried to submit the column to The McGill Tribune, it was rejected by the newspapers editors, who cited their opposition to Zionism, characterizing it as “a settler-colonial ideology that has perpetuated the ethnic cleansing of Palestine.” The Tribune further claimed that “Your article doesn't align with our values as a paper. We're not going to be able to publish it.” In this week's podcast, we sit down with Claire to discuss her experience and the lessons it teaches Jewish students about how to advocate for themselves on campus. Children are under attack today and it's coming on many fronts. Just take a look at the goals of communism as read into the congressional record of 1963 and you'll see goals such as the discrediting of the family, encouraging the raising of children away from the negative influence of parents, getting control of the schools and getting a hold on the media.--Who would have thought that in our day we'd actually see this war playing out right before our eyes.--Joining Jim to discuss this trend was Robert Knight. Robert is a former Los Angeles Times news editor and writer and was a Media Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He's a regular weekly columnist for The Washington Times, Townhall.com, afa.net and others. Robert has held senior positions in a number of pro-family organizations. He has co-authored three books and written 10 others including, The Coming Communist Wave- What Happens If the Left Captures All Three Branches of Government and Liberty on the Brink- How the Left Plans to Steal Your Vote.--Discussion began concerning a bill by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the Parental Rights in Education Law. This would ban classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation and gender identity for children in K-3rd grade. Disney is against this move to prevent the sexualization of children before the 3rd grade, while at the same time, the media has twisted this by calling the legislation a -Don't say gay- bill.--There's much more that's covered on this issue, and you can hear it all, when you review this vital Crosstalk broadcast.

Nurses UnboxedDr. Danielle Altares SarikNurses and the practice of nursing are normally thought of as practicing in an in-patient, acute-care setting rather than in the community. Join me for an informative episode as Dr. Danielle Sarik and I unbox nurses! Hear how nurses provide transitional care from in-patient settings to the community setting whether it is in a patient's home, long-term care, or skilled care. Danielle discusses her research in transitional care for pediatric patients and assisting their families with these frequently, life-altering changes. We discuss telehealth and its' role in transitional care, and Dr. Sarik's funded studies supporting transitional care for neonatal and pediatric patients. Dr. Sarik, a former political strategist, talks about her view on how nurses are uniquely positioned in the community to advocate for patients, families, and communities. For 19 years in a row, the Gallup Poll has ranked nursing as the most honest and ethical profession. As one collective voice, nurses can impact great changes. Dr. Sarik encourages nurses to talk with legislators about our profession and that legislation that impacts our practice. Dr. Sarik discusses how important it is for nurses to educate our legislators and the public on the differences in nursing roles. We talk about the challenges of the pandemic and how many, including the pediatric population are having mental health challenges, and the different possibilities of nurses identifying and intervening with these challenges. Burnout among nurses and exhaustion among community members as well, must be identified early and addressed. About Dr. Danielle Sarik: Danielle Altares Sarik, Ph.D., APRN, CPNP-PC is a nurse scientist and pediatric nurse practitioner with expertise in health services and outcomes research. She holds a BA from Cornell University, and a BSN, MSN, and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Liz Fish did a stint as a Kiva Media Fellow in 2013, traveling to Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan to document success stories of entrepreneurs receiving loans from Kiva, the micro-finance non-profit. In our fun (and emotional) conversation, Liz lets us in on the secret of what gift to bring Ukrainian farmers to immediately get in their good graces. She also gives the inside scoop on what it's like to be married to Reed. Uh-oh. This episode features laughs, tears and, hopefully, some inspiration. See the video Liz produced in Kyrgyzstan about Meerim and read her story on Medium. Make a loan to an entrepreneur in need today at kiva.org. It’s fun and you can get paid back! Drew Powell can be next seen in the major feature film remake of the 1971 film “Straw Dogs,” directed by Rod Lurie and due for release on September 16th. Powell grew up in Lebanon, Indiana, outside of Indianapolis. He graduated from DePauw University, where he majored in English Literature and was a Media Fellow, an honors program in media studies. He was active in the theatre department, and wrote and performed in campus television shows and student films. His first television appearance was a small co-starring role in the hit television series "Malcolm in the Middle." So impressed were the producers of the show that they wrote the role into episode after episode and even named the character after him: “Cadet Drew.” He appeared on many episodes of the show over two seasons. Next up for Drew was the prequel to "Bonanza" called "The Ponderosa” on which he played Hoss Cartwright. The twenty episodes produced continue to air on cable. Shooting in rural Australia, Drew met and fell in love with Veronica, now his wife, who was a make-up artist on the show. Drew’s first starring role in a major feature film is in the remake of the 1971 film “Straw Dogs,” directed by Rod Lurie and due for release in late 2010/early ‘11. Other feature film appearances include “Starship Troopers 2,” “The Marine,” “Mexican Sunrise” and “1408” with John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. Drew has guest starred on numerous television series including “House,” “Leverage,” “Psych,” “ER,” “The Office,” “CSI,” “Cold Case,” “Without a Trace,” and “Monk.”

David Van Biema is currently writing Speaking to God: A History and Cultural Interpretation of the Psalms for Simon & Schuster. He is a contract contributor to Time magazine on the topic of religion. Prior to going on contract, he was with Time for 15 years, ten of them covering religion, and eight of them as head religion writer. While at Duke, David plans to take advantage of the opportunity to meet with our faculty experts on Islam and Muslims to enhance his understanding of key issues and concerns facing today's Muslim communities. He is especially interested in the question of how a new generation of Muslim students studying Islam in the academy, either as a supplement to their major concentration or as their speciality, has the potential to change the practice of Islam in the U.S. --and perhaps eventually to affect it worldwide. David has written over 25 covers for Time and won numerous religion-writing awards, including three Wilburs from the Religion Communicators Council. Prior to working at Time, Van Biema was (in chronological order) a senior writer at People Magazine, The Washington Post Sunday Magazine, and Life Magazine, writing cover stories for all three. Van Biema is a graduate of Wesleyan University (Phi Beta Kappa) and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He lives in Manhattan with his family.
