Many developed countries are creating immigration policies designed specifically to attract the most talented migrants. We often assume that when those skilled and educated citizens migrate from low-income countries in search of high-paying opportunities, it causes a “brain drain” in their home countries, delaying or hobbling development. A new article in the journal Science puts that assumption to the test and finds that there is also the possibility of a brain gain at home, as investments in education, remittances, and the contribution of the diaspora to investment and changing norms can more the compensate for the loss of skills.  Cátia Batista of Nova School of Business and Economics and Caroline Theoharides of Amherst College are two of the authors of the article, and they tell Tim Phillips about what the potential for brain gains, but also the policies that are needed to make sure this happens. He manages due diligence processes on land, permitting, and utility interconnection and is in charge of financing and structuring through Note to Proceed (“NTP”) to Commercial Operation Date (“COD”). Benoy composes teams suitable for all project development and construction tasks. He is also involved in project planning and pipeline financial modeling. He has been part of all sides of the transaction and this allows him to provide unique perspectives and value. Benoy has extensive experience in financial engineering to make solar projects profitable. Before founding Reneu Energy, he was the SREC Trader in the Project Finance Group for SolarCity which merged with Tesla in 2016.  He originated SREC trades with buyers and co-developed their SREC monetization and hedging strategy with the senior management of SolarCity to move into the east coast markets.  Benoy was the Vice President at Vanguard Energy Partners which is a national solar installer where he focused on project finance solutions for commercial scale solar projects.  He also worked for Ridgewood Renewable Power, a private equity fund, where he analyzed potential investments in renewable energy projects and worked on maximizing the financial return of the projects in the portfolio.  Benoy also worked on the sale of all of the renewable energy projects in Ridgewood's portfolio.   He was in the Energy Structured Finance practice for Deloitte & Touche and in Financial Advisory Services practice at Ernst & Young.  Benoy received his first experience in Finance as an intern at D.E. Shaw & Co., which is a global investment firm with 37 billion dollars in investment capital. He has a MBA in Finance from Rutgers University and a BS in Finance and Economics from the Stern School of Business at New York University.  Benoy was an Alumni Scholar at the Stern School of Business.  João Salvação Barreto Chief Executive Officer, EDPR NA Distributed Generation João Salvação Barreto is the CEO of EDPR North America Distributed Generation, the distributed solar and storage business unit of EDP Renewables NA. Beyond his academic achievements, Santa-Clara is deeply involved in fostering the next generation of talent in technology and creative industries, bridging the gap between academia and the demands of the modern workforce. He co-founded TUMO and 42 Studio which offers tuition-free, peer-to-peer learning programs in software engineering.

The ILO estimates that 75.6 million people are engaged in domestic work around the world, and for women especially it can be an important source of income. But domestic work can be casual, without the support mechanisms many have come to rely on in decent work settings – from holiday and sick pay to safe working environment and safe working hours. Social Impact Pioneer Professor Jenny M. Hoobler has dedicated her academic life to unveiling the critical role of domestic work and workers in today's workforce and across all our societies. Jenny is now the Professor of Human Resource Management and the Academic Director of Leadership for the Social Impact Knowledge Center at NOVA School of Business and Economics in Portugal. Her CV and experience include completing her PhD in the USA, and time as a Professor at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. She has consulted for companies such as UPS USG Corporation and edited the Journal of Applied Psychology. Jenny's insights into the employer-employee relationship within domestic work reveal a spectrum of experiences, from being the essential glue keeping everything going to exploitation. E não é para menos. O ensino é uma área que está hoje em grande mudança, impulsionada por um certo descontentamento com a escola tradicional e também pela revolução tecnológica. Entre os muitos projectos que têm surgido globalmente, há dois particularmente inovadores e que já chegaram a Portugal: a escola 42 e o TUMO. E ambos têm um denominador comum no nosso país: Pedro Santa-Clara, professor e empreendedor e o convidado do episódio de hoje. O convidado é Professor Catedrático de Finanças na Nova School of Business and Economics desde 2007, depois de ter passado pela Universidade da Califórnia, nos EUA. Em 2020, trouxe para Portugal a “42”, uma escola de programação muito peculiar, que surgiu em França em 2013 e já está hoje em mais de 25 países.  Mais recentemente, trouxe para Portugal outro modelo de aprendizagem inovador, o centro de tecnologias criativas “TUMO”, um projeto educativo gratuito e complementar ao ensino formal e visa capacitar os jovens para tirarem partido dos desafios e oportunidades da sociedade do futuro. Foi inaugurado há cerca de um mês, em Coimbra, o primeiro espaço TUMO da Península Ibérica.  Para além destes projectos, o Pedro é também fundador da Miles in the Sky, uma startup também focada em educação. Neste episódio, conversei com Pedro sobre a revolução em curso no ensino. Falámos sobre como a tecnologia está a revolucionar a aprendizagem -- permitindo dar escala a modelos inovadores de educação (como estes e não só) -- e discutimos as características-chave destes novos modelos, como a importância do trabalho colaborativo e a ênfase em “aprender a aprender”, em detrimento da memorização. Timothy Pollock, professor of entrepreneurship at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, joins the Business Scholarship Podcast to discuss his article Not Like the Rest of Us? Are some people simply more cut out to take on big responsibilities, where lives are at stake, or is it actually just good training? In this episode of Looking Outside, we explore the mindset and skills of preparedness in Flying with commercial airline pilot, Ricardo Nunes. Being responsible for hundreds of people on the plane is not something Ricardo takes for granted. While many of us would find that extreme level of responsibility crippling, Ricardo says the confidence comes from understanding the weight of the responsibility, and taking that seriously by training for the worst. Ricardo describes how preparation has been pivotal to surviving challenges faced in his aviation career and prior to that, before he crossed to ‘the dark side', when he flew Search and Rescue helicopters for the Portuguese Air Force. It's all in the training, Ricardo stresses, as while the scenarios faced are different, the way to think through them is the same.Jo and Ricardo also explore the intersection of flying and foresight, in how anticipatory thinking allows you to ‘fly ahead of the plane'. Explaining that the mindset is similar in the military as in foresight, particularly in leveraging methods like scenario planning, Ricardo says constantly testing out different pathways in flight means he is prepared for unforeseen situations so that when a tough decision has to be made, its already been thought-through.While the life of a pilot may seem both illustrious and solitary, the success of the airline industry and its crew is entirely dependent on being humble and highly communicative. Ricardo explains how airlines strictly follow a “just culture”; where decisions, omissions and actions are reported or called out without reprimand. It is only by showing, not hiding, mistakes that the airline industry maintains a culture of trust and builds on knowledge that leads to its incredible safety record. Ricardo also speaks to how this kind of approach in pushing yourself into complex and challenging situations, and consistently training for them, makes you a better person … one who is less prone to panic in the moment, and one who can enjoy a unique life (for example, where you get the travel the world). Train hard and fight easy, as they say in the military.--To look outside, Ricardo says to talk to someone different; someone who doesn't do what you do for a living or doesn't think the same way. Sometimes you need an outsider view to help you think outside the box. --Ricardo Nunes is a former Portuguese Air Force pilot turned commercial airline pilot with a passion for foresight and scenario planning. Ricardo began his career in 2005 in the Portuguese Air Force, where he flew various fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, including the DHC-1 Chipmunk, TB-30 Epsilon, Allouette 3, and EH101 Merlin. He flew numerous Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, eventually becoming a SAR captain in 2011.In 2013, Ricardo transitioned to the civilian world, where he now logs thousands of flight hours aboard Airbus A320/321 aircraft, connecting Lisbon to destinations in Europe, Africa, and the Americas with over 5,000 flight hours under his belt.But flying is not Ricardo's only passion. He is also a founding member of the Portuguese Foresight Association, a non-profit organization established by like-minded individuals to promote foresight and future studies in Portuguese society. Despite his busy schedule, Ricardo remains true to his Lisbon roots, where he was born and raised. He holds a Master of Science in Air Transport Management from City, University of London, and post-graduates degrees in Foresight, Strategy, and Innovation from the Lisbon School of Economics (ISEG), and in Management from the NOVA School of Business and Economics. Change can be scary. New places, people, and environments can feel so foreign and unfamiliar that it can be tempting to stick to what we know. Eleanor Lumsden knows a great deal about facing that spiritual wilderness you encounter when heading out into the Great Unknown and traversing the planet in search of our true home and soul growth. Eleanor has been traveling the World all of her life and has experienced first hand the remarkable benefits of exploration. She founded The No Sister Stands Alone Travel Club (NOSSA), an online sisterhood where members meet other travelers and receive insider tips to live out their travel dreams safely and on their own terms. (49:09) Livro recomendado: Love, Money, and Parenting: How Economics Explains the Way We Raise Our Kids, by Matthias Doepke and Fabrizio Zilibotti _______________ Nesta 2ª parte da conversa com Pedro Freitas, abordámos em maior profundidade alguns temas levantados na 1ª parte sobre o que nos diz a investigação na área da educação.  Falámos, por exemplo, da evidência que existe em relação ao viés dos exames internos das escolas, por oposição às provas nacionais, de medidas para motivar mais os professores, e de ideias para atrair mais pessoas, inclusive pessoas já com carreira noutros sectores, para a carreira docente. Para além disso, desafiei também o convidado para discutir alguns tópicos desta área mais abrangentes e que me têm feito pensar, como o puzzle de as enormes melhorias de Portugal na educação ainda não se terem traduzido numa economia pujante, , alguns mais controversos, como que papel devem e podem ter as escolas privadas num modelo de educação universal e inclusiva,  Esta 2ª parte da nossa conversa foi, diria, tão ou mais interessante do que a primeira. Está dividida em duas partes (esta que agora publico e outra que sairá nos próximos dias) -- e a primeira não foi gravada originalmente para o 45 Graus, mas sim para o outro podcast que faço, o Trinta por uma linha. A ideia era discutirmos a três políticas públicas de educação, mas o convidado domina estes temas de tal forma que o que era suposto ser um debate de ideias se converteu numa entrevista muito ao estilo do 45 Graus, e que por isso aqui decidi publicar também. De caminho, e porque houve temas que ficaram por tratar ou aprofundar como gostaria, decidi convidar o Pedro para gravarmos uma segunda conversa, desta vez para publicar aqui, e que sairá nos próximos dias.  Mas vamos por partes.  O convidado, Pedro Freitas, é doutorando em Economia na Nova School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE), onde é membro do grupo de investigação «Nova Center for the Economics of Education», que tem desenvolvido investigação muito inovadora na área da economia da educação.  Como dizia o João Tiago Gaspar -- que comigo faz o Trinta por uma linha -- a economia da educação é uma das áreas das CS que mais interessantes resultados tem produzido nos últimos anos -- uma vez, acrescento eu, que se expandiu de um foco estrito em questões económicas relacionadas com a educação (como a procura e oferta por serviços educativos) para aplicar as metodologias e abordagens da ciência económica no estudo de uma série muito mais abrangente de temas desta área, tentando medir e comparar, por exemplo, o valor acrescentado dos professores ou a eficácia de diferentes modelos educativos.  Nesta dupla conversa com Pedro Freitas (este episódio e a 2ª parte que sai nos próximos dias), abordámos, então, políticas públicas na área da educação, designadamente que possam criar uma escola melhor e mais inclusiva. Melhor, porque apesar dos progressos recentes que as avaliações internacionais assinalam, persistem lacunas que impedem motivar melhor os professores, atrair talento para a profissão e tornar as escolas melhores a ensinar.
