Keza MacDonald, the video games editor at The Guardian and author of the new book “Super Nintendo: The Game-Changing Company That Unlocked the Power of Play,” chose to write her first book about Nintendo because it has been so central for so long to the culture of games. “It was the company that got me into video games,” she says. “I know that's the same story that millions of other people have had as well." She speaks with host Gilbert Cruz about the iconic Japanese company as well as how the perception of gaming has changed over the decades. Lured Up - A Pokémon GO Podcast

Lured Up Podcast 381: Three Flamigos Live Streamed on - 2/3/2026 Publish Date - 2/6/2026 Last weekend brought us a double header with Vulpix Community Day and DMAX Ho-Oh Max Battle Weekend. This weekend brings Carnival of Flamigo and Oricorio Catch Mastery. Double dipping may be the best way to get the most out of the game. With next season's Saturdays being blocked out, we think it safe to assume there will be some weekends with overlapping events. We have two annual events making their return this month with Valentine's Day and Lunar New Year. Adam thinks that with Enamorous and Luvdisc not being in the announcement, that there will be more info coming. Lunar New Year will be your next chance for Shiny Gimmighoul, which will likely lead the charge of the event. It's been a while since we last visited Reddit to find some interesting Pokémon GO posts. We picked some of our favorites and enjoy the sweet vibe of Reddit and how it is so different from X. We look back to the old avatar aesthetic, the Meowth Balloon, and hear two great stories from the community. Finally we wrap up with a discussion on game-work-life balance and how we are currently approaching the topic. We share what we are doing right and wrong in the daily battle to find balance. We also want to hear from you! What are you succeeding or failing at when it comes to balance in your life? Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on 1985's Ultima IV. We talk a lot about the mysterious sense of the game, the talking interface and mechanics, and dive a bit into combat before turning to reader mail. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Another number of hours Issues covered: missing out on talking to someone, sleeping sprites, having a talk prompt and fallbacks, having generic topics per town, putting together with nouns and verbs, adding to world-building, introducing riddles and puzzles, having a sense of what's going on under the hood, exploring through talking, the technical implementation issues, the letter limits, likely implementation details, iterating on a design, fast travel, the many eights, explaining the moon gates, fleeing a boat, the ways you can pause the game, how the moon states work, the persistence of the world, the long table, more arguments for the persistence of the world, getting into combat, the zoomed in battlefield, strategizing around leveling up characters, readying/switching weapons, anticipating dungeon combat, the combat soundscape and understanding the battle, using every key on the keyboard, how many monsters there are, leveling combat, leveling up by talking with Lord British, non-linear XP table, reinforcing the relationship with both Lord British and Richard Garriott, having the cycle of leveling up, the surprise of discovering Magincia, a question of controllers, swapping between screens, distinctions between different Pikmin games, our favorite Pikmin types, charity unlocks, capybara attacks.  Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Sierra, King's Quest (series), LucasArts, Dungeons & Dragons, Larian, Baldur's Gate (series), Eye of the Beholder, The Outer Wilds, Her Story, Sam Barlow, Deadly Premonition, Ultima Underworld, Final Fantasy Tactics, The Elder Scrolls (series), Serious Sam, Richard Garriott, Ultima Online, Darren Johnson, Star Wars (obliquely), Pikmin, Dark Souls, Missile Command, MysteryDip, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Calamity Nolan, Virtual Boy, Okami, The Simpons (obliquely), Asher, FSSZilla, Cuphead, Hitman, Metal Gear Solid, Dwarf Fortress, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Note: Because Ultima IV has very little music to speak of, I will be substituting music from later in the series in the openings to these episodes TTDS: 59:13 Next time: More Ultima IV! Online play with friends, rewinding, and ease of use are all great features, but there are several innovations in emulation that Nintendo could utilize to make their service even better. We go over these and take a look at the subscription service as a whole. We also cover all the Nintendo and gaming news such as fresh Direct rumors, Dispatch being censored on Nintendo platforms, Virtual Boy getting new unreleased games, major gaming figures found in the Epstein files and much more. On this week's Game Deflators podcast episode, John and Ryan are back with a packed lineup of gaming chatter, industry hot takes, and a double dose of Highguard discourse. The episode kicks off with fresh gaming updates as the guys break down what they've been playing, what's caught their attention. From there, they dive into Highguard's rocky reception, comparing its early reviews to other notoriously low‑rated titles. Is the criticism fair, or is this another case of the internet dog‑piling a new release? The conversation then shifts to censorship in gaming, with Nintendo's recent decision to censor Dispatch taking center stage. John and Ryan break down why this move feels out of step with the company's own history, especially considering similar or even more provocative titles that previously launched on Nintendo platforms without edits. They explore what might be driving this sudden change and whether it signals a new, less predictable approach to content approval going forward. Next, the duo speculates on Switch 2 pricing, weighing hardware rumors, and market trends. They also turn their attention to the future of PlayStation 6, discussing delays, shifting expectations, and what Sony needs to do to regain momentum. Finally, the guys return to Highguard for a full hero shooter review and critique, breaking down gameplay, design choices, and whether the title has the potential to grow—or if it's destined to fade fast. 00:00 Introduction to the Game Deflators Podcast 03:12 3D Printing Adventures and New Gear 06:03 Gaming Updates: Plucky Squire and Feedback 09:11 Voice Acting in Games: A Discussion 12:14 The Impact of AI in Gaming Voiceovers 15:12 Speedrunning and Community Dynamics 18:04 High Guard and Game Reception 21:10 Censorship in Gaming: Nintendo's Decisions 26:57 Nintendo's Innuendos and the Switch 2 Price Predictions 33:16 The Future of PlayStation: Delays and Expectations 44:08 Highguard: A Hero Shooter Review and Critique   Find us on TheGameDeflators.com Twitter - www.twitter.com/GameDeflators Facebook - www.facebook.com/TheGameDeflators Instagram - www.instagram.com/thegamedeflators   The views and opinions expressed on this channel are solely those of the author.
