GUEST: Elisa Hermes, an update about recent US OPEN qualifying tournaments and Rules worshops that Elisa has been running, we also discuss golf as an outdoor spot - THE GRQ PODCAST EP138GRQ137 - David hits his tee shot to the right of the fairway and it comes to rest inside a wombat hole that is on the side of a cliff face. The ball is not visible from the ground, but it was known to have gone into the hole, and the hole is very visible from the ground and it is easy to see that it is a wombat hole. David can't walk up the cliff face to get to the ball nor the hole, so he says to Andrew that he will take free relief, and use the nearest spot to the hole that he can reach as his reference point and drop a ball within a club-length of that spot. Andrew is not sure about that, and doesn't even think David could actually play a shot at the ball, as he can't climb the cliff face. Andrew calls in a referee, and that is you, what is your ruling?Answer: The stroke would have been clearly unreasonable for David, so there is no free relief. He would have to take stroke-and-distance and he cannot locate the exact spot of the ball.GRQOTW138A player' s ball has come to rest on the fringe. Markets shook after US President Donald Trump announced his so-called reciprocal tariffs earlier this month. But there was one market in particular that got investors particularly worried: Treasuries. What's usually a safe haven asset suddenly saw huge sell-offs. Trump managed to avoid further pain by pausing large chunks of his tariffs, but the sell-off prompts a discussion about significant structural flaws in the market. The FT's US markets editor Kate Duguid explains which cracks in the US Treasuries market we can't ignore.Clip from The Wall Street Journal- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For further reading:Why did Donald Trump buckle? Is the world losing faith in the almighty US dollar? The debt-fuelled bet on US Treasuries that's scaring regulators - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Follow Kate Duguid on X (@kateduguid). Send us a textNvidia's strategic move to manufacture AI chips on American soil marks a watershed moment for domestic tech production. Starting later this year through partnerships with TSMC in Arizona and Intel's foundries, this initiative responds to surging AI demand while creating valuable jobs for middle-class Americans. The first batch of US-produced chips will arrive in Q4 2025, strengthening America's technological infrastructure at a critical time.Meanwhile, the US-China trade relationship has deteriorated beyond simple tariffs, now impacting semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and aviation sectors. Recent US export restrictions on AI chips to China have hit Nvidia hard with a $5.5 billion write-down and 6% stock decline. China's retaliatory measures include halting Boeing deliveries and suspending mail services, reflecting growing economic nationalism. These tensions have sent gold soaring past $3,300 per ounce while Wall Street futures slide – clear signals of market uncertainty. For homeowners and potential buyers, there's cautious optimism as mortgage rates remain under 7% for the twelfth consecutive week. The 30-year fixed refinance rate sits at 6.86%, with applications increasing for both new mortgages and refinancing. However, real estate performance varies dramatically by location and price point – some Florida markets thrive while others struggle, making this very much a market-by-market situation. Despite these variations, stabilizing rates represent positive movement for American families and businesses navigating today's complex economic landscape.Looking to see real estate wealth-building strategies in action? Today's main event is undoubtedly the Federal Reserve's much-anticipated interest rate decision. Recent US economic data releases have been mixed, but investors are heavily betting on a 25 basis point cut. Meanwhile, German economic data has also been mixed as the country continues to navigate choppy waters. Over in Asia, a potential merger between Japanese car giants Nissan and Honda is making headlines. In commodities, cocoa prices have risen to new record highs, while oil and gold are trading in narrow ranges ahead of the US interest rate announcement. Could a recent US settlement have an effect on Canadian real estate? In this episode of the REAL Collective Podcast, Sean Tasse (Broker) and Kyle Miller (Mortgage Agent) break down the possibilities. In the first half Sean and Kyle briefly discuss a tale of two markets (those that are priced right versus those that are overpriced). They then move on to the recent landmark settlement that was announced last month and how similar cases are happening here in Canada with the Toronto Real Estate Board. They explain the crux of the issue (the Competition Act and Commissions) specifically buyer's side commissions. They talk about what could happen down the line and how this could be difficult with the current mortgage structure here in Canada. In the second half our hosts discuss three hot money topics that have been in the news recently. 1. Bare Trust and the CRA 2. A Renter's Bill of Rights 3. But does Vishnu Varathan, Head of Economics & Strategy at Mizuho Bank agree with that hypothesis? The Adult Improver series returns to look at both the macro and the micro of adult chess improvement. My guest is NM Todd Bryant. Todd is a software engineer (for Chess.com) and an accomplished player, who has used his analytical skills to gather lots of data about the most accomplished adult improvers in recent US Chess History. Todd shares information about the standout improvement cases at different age ranges. What would be considered an exceptional rating gain for someone over the age of 30? What about age 50? What patterns does Todd notice in looking at the rating graphs of these accomplished amateur? In addition to sharing all of this data that Todd has dutifully gathered, he discusses his own improvement philosophy. Todd plays frequently OTB, and when at home he emphasizes opening study and frequent speed chess play. This approach has been working for Todd as he recently passed 2500 Blitz on Chess.com for the first time! This week on Facing the Future, we hear from Ben Ritz, Director of the Center for Growing America's Future at the Progressive Policy Institute, and one of our more frequent show contributors. Ben has written several interesting pieces including one where he asserts that the Fitch rating agency's recent downgrade of the federal government's credit rating should be a wakeup call for all those concerned about the budget and our national debt - even if the downgrade itself was not warranted. So we talk to Ben about that and also, how is the federal government doing about investing in scientific and technological research and innovation a year after Congress passed the Chips and Science Act.

In a 6-3 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of a web designer refusing to make a website for same-sex marriages, despite a Colorado law that prohibits discrimination against gay people. In another case involving a mail carrier who was refusing to work on his Sabbath, the courts unanimously decided to broaden religious protections, creating a new standard for testing religious accommodations. Jim Oleske is a law professor at Lewis & Clark Law School. He joins us to break down the two cases and dig into the complicated intersection of religious freedoms and other constitutional values.
Welcome to a very special bonus episode of What The Tech from Boast AI!Today, we're unpacking some of the findings from a pair of recent court rulings in the United States that emphasize just how much time and money can be wasted when businesses don't exercise savvy (and scrutiny) when applying for R&D tax credits. This conversation features Boast AI's own Director of Customer Delivery Ashley Crawford along with our Senior Product Marketing Manager Asad Ali, and was originally featured as part of Boast AI's weekly InnovatorsLive series on LinkedIn.In both cases discussed today, titled Little Sandy Coal v. Commissioner and Scott Moore, et al. v. Commissioner, the courts found that taxpayers failed to substantiate certain activities and their associated qualified research expenditures (QREs) due in large part to a lack of proper documentation. Along with being a lesson on the importance of good record keeping, the cases shine a light on several missed opportunities where the taxpayers may have been able to leverage the tax code to their advantage. I hope you enjoy the show and stay tuned for next week's regularly scheduled episode of What The Tech featuring innovators from across North America's tech ecosystem!Boast AI accelerates the success of innovative businesses globally with software that integrates financial, payroll, and engineering data into a single platform of R&D intelligence. Recent US data has been reported as better than expected. Wide forecast ranges make “expected” a rather imprecise concept. But on both sides of the Atlantic, middle income consumer spending power is better than the official data implies. This is not enough to stop a slowdown, perhaps. It is enough to give resilience to consumers.
On today's broadcast, we're discussing Elon Musk, AI, and free speech, plus what's happening in SpaceX and the space industry. Recent US intelligence leaks have embarrassed Ukraine and its allies, while Eastern Europe is resisting cultural indoctrination. • Recent US economic data suggest that growth remains buoyant as there is particular resilience in the labor market and strength in services. Unfortunately, stronger growth is simultaneously raising the odds of persistent inflation as the latest figures have come in higher than expected as well. • In contrast, the feedback from companies during this current earnings season has been one of slowing growth and lower inflation. This has been reflected in weak aggregate guidance from management teams. • So, which outlook are we to give greater credence?

Stock markets in the US, Europe and Singapore are at the heart of the discussion today. In the US, the Beige Book showed the US economy grew slightly through the end of August, while outlook remained weak over the next year. But what does this mean for markets? Elsewhere, the European Central Bank has hiked interest rates by yet another 75 basis points to tackle rising inflation, but how are markets likely to react, and is this the time to snap up energy shares in the region? Back home, Singapore saw a number of digital banks sprouting recently, but what does this mean for the shares of companies backing them, and should trio of local banks be concerned? On Market View, Prime Time's Finance Presenter Chua Tian Tian got down to the details with David Kuo, Co-founder of The Smart Investor.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Scott interviews journalist Mathieu Aikins who has remained in Kabul to report for the New York Times. Aikins and his team recently investigated the drone strike the U.S. carried out on August 29th that officials claimed had targeted a car carrying explosives believed to be driven by a member of ISIS. However, the team from NYT found a devastating scene with the bodies of children and a distraught family claiming to have just lost ten family members. Aikins and his colleagues were able to identify the man as Zemari Ahmadi. Ahmadi worked for a California-based aid organization and was trying to get his family on a plane out of Afghanistan when he and many of his children were killed. Discussed on the show: “Times Investigation: In U.S. Drone Strike, Evidence Suggests No ISIS Bomb” (New York Times) “Examining a ‘righteous' strike” (Washington Post) “The Taliban's Fight for Hearts and Minds” (Foreign Policy) Mathieu Aikins is an international freelance journalist currently reporting from Kabul, Afghanistan. Today is the last Sunday after Pentecost or the last Sunday or Ordinary Time, also known as Christ the King Sunday. Next Sunday begins Advent. Today, however, is a day to recognize the authority of Christ over all dominion, i.e. all principalities and powers, human and otherwise. He is certainly the King whether people realize it or not; one day, however, all will recognize his kingship and bow to him. Believers should consider him King far above any king or ruler. In the United States, we just went through an important election. In considering Christ the King, the recent election has caused many to wonder if Christ truly is the King even in the lives of professing Christians. I believe the recent US election has exposed hard truths about American society with which we must grapple. For the scope here, I will point to three hard truths the recent US election has exposed in American society.

In this year of big elections, my next guest is in a fairly unique position: as a US citizen and NZ Permanent Resident, she has regularly voted in both countries since 2008. Dr April Henderson is a Senior Lecturer in Pacific Studies, in Va‘aomanū Pasifika at Victoria University of Wellington. She was born in the US state of Oregon and raised on the US West Coast and in Hawai‘i. Although not herself of Pacific ancestry, she began a degree in Pacific Islands Studies at University of Hawai‘i in 1996 after spending time in Samoa and feeling a responsibility to learn more about the region she called home. In 2002, she was hired by her friend, the late Dr. Teresia Teaiwa of Victoria’s Pacific Studies programme, for what she expected would be a short-term position. Almost 19 years and two children later, she is still in Wellington, where she’s been keenly following the recent election results. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Macro ESG: markets, politics, and technology for a sustainable future with Greg Beier
As the EU failed over the weekend to agree on a Green New Deal and Emerging Markets and the Southern and Western US states continue to deliver higher infections per capita (please see charts below), the question of funding Green New Deal economic recovery plans amidst higher debt levels from further lockdowns becomes pertinent – particularly as Melbourne just launched a mandatory mask requirement in public for a much lower infection count. US and EU public debt as a percentage of national income has lots of borrowing room and is not a problem – the real problem is just whether or not it is invested intelligently – and that is quite a big if. Recent US experiences with increasing the national debt have, on balance, been failures. www.macroESG.com #macroESG --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/macro-esg/message

During this broadcast, we will hear from a panel of young black men (adolescent to college student) from around the United States to describe their feelings about the attention now being placed on this issue. Join us for what will surely be a provacative, informative conversation for educators and leaders about a sub-population they serve.
In a complex and challenging world, how durable is the international role of the US? While there were many setbacks between the fall of Soviet communism and the opening years of the Trump administration, from Rwanda to 9/11 and Iraq to Syria, Tim Lynch demonstrates that the US remained the world's dominant power. Recent US foreign politics hasn't changed that much compared to the Cold War era.

A pact forged by Opec and non-Opec producers such as Russia, the largest producer outside the group, has lowered global inventories of crude, reversing a three-year price slump that saw prices fall as low as $29 a barrel in 2016. Recent US-led air strikes on Syria have also contributed to the price rally but analysts are suggesting that oil could climb higher but President Donald Trump’s decision on the Iran nuclear deal on May 12 could be a deciding factor. To decipher which factors will matter most in the coming weeks, The National's energy correspondent Jennifer Gnana spoke to Iman Nasseri, managing director, Middle East at London-based Facts Global Energy about how much further oil prices could go, whether the rally is sustainable, how much longer Opec and non-Opec can hold together their pact and also on what happens to the oil markets if the Iran deal falls apart. Business Extra is The National's weekly look at the business, financial and technology sectors of the Middle East and beyond.
