Nolan Wells was supposed to come home from Horn Island after the Fourth of July. His friends left. He stayed. Two days later, a park ranger found him in the water — and the story the group told investigators started falling apart almost immediately.Multiple friends from the boat trip have given conflicting accounts of what happened on the island. The family says Nolan's Snapchat data was erased after his death. The FBI is conducting forensic analysis on his phone, and death threats tied to the case are under separate investigation. Attorney Ben Crump retained by the family says the case will go to a grand jury.Jennifer Coffindaffer, retired FBI Special Agent, joins Tony Brueski and Robin Dreeke to examine the investigation's biggest vulnerability: the people closest to Nolan Wells cannot agree on what happened. Coffindaffer assesses whether the Snapchat allegation holds investigative weight, what the FBI's role actually is when jurisdiction belongs to the local sheriff despite the island being federal land, and why the public's rush to assign motive — racial or otherwise — may be obscuring what the evidence actually shows.Over sixty witnesses have been interviewed. Two autopsies are pending — one from the state, one independent. And the friends who were on that boat with Nolan Wells have yet to tell a version of events that everyone agrees on.Somebody knows what happened. The question is whether anybody is willing to say it out loud.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Nolan Wells went to Horn Island on the Fourth of July with a group of friends. They came back. He didn't. Two days later, his body was pulled from the water by a park ranger — and the people closest to him started offering different accounts of what happened. The Wells family says his Snapchat data was wiped after his death. The FBI is running forensics on his phone. Over sixty witnesses have been interviewed. Death threats linked to the case are under separate investigation. And the friends who left Nolan behind on a federally protected island without water or transportation have given investigators stories that contradict each other.Jennifer Coffindaffer, a retired FBI Special Agent, joins Tony and Robin to examine the cracks forming between the friends' public statements and the facts investigators are piecing together. She addresses the Snapchat allegation directly — whether it constitutes evidence of a cover-up or whether there are plausible explanations — and what it means that the FBI is involved but maintains the local sheriff has jurisdiction despite Horn Island being federal land. The case is being investigated as a death — not yet classified as a crime. But the distance between what the friends are saying and what the evidence appears to show is growing. Coffindaffer walks through what that gap means from an investigative standpoint and why the next thirty days may determine whether anyone is ever held accountable for leaving an eighteen-year-old alone on an island.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? An eighteen-year-old went to Horn Island with friends on the Fourth of July. His friends came home. He didn't. When his body was found two days later, the questions started — and the answers from the people who were with him kept shifting.Nolan Wells' family alleges his Snapchat accounts were wiped clean after his death. The FBI is examining digital evidence. More than sixty witnesses have been interviewed. And the friends who left Nolan on a federally protected barrier island without a phone, water, or any way off are providing investigators with accounts that don't match each other.Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer breaks it down with Tony and Robin. She digs into why conflicting accounts from witnesses this early in an investigation are a red flag, what the FBI's involvement actually looks like when the local sheriff maintains primary jurisdiction, and whether the public's polarization — some calling it a tragic accident, others pointing to something deliberate — is helping or hurting the search for truth.Attorney Ben Crump has launched an independent investigation after his team identified contradictions in the case. Crump announced the findings will go before a grand jury. Meanwhile, the cause and manner of Nolan Wells' death still have not been released. The friends who were there that day hold the answers. The question is whether their answers will ever match.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Yet this teacher may have gone too far, so let me know your thoughts about this story.
Every explanation for how Nolan Wells ended up alone on Horn Island runs through a single, checkable claim: that the friends' boat was taking on water. A marine mechanic could confirm that in an afternoon with a screwdriver and a look at the bilge pump. Nobody appears to have done it — there's no public sign the boat has ever been impounded, inspected, or photographed by anyone with a badge. It's just been sitting at a private dock since the day Nolan disappeared. That's one loose thread. Here's another: Nolan's phone turned up at the boat owner's house with both Snapchat accounts wiped, and nobody called his mother to tell her they had it. Federal law lets any agency send a one-page preservation letter to freeze Snapchat data, Life360 history, and cell records before they auto-delete — no warrant required. Whether Jackson County ever sent one is anybody's guess. Cell tower pings alone could answer whether Nolan's phone left that island while he was still breathing. Sheriff Ledbetter won't confirm whether every friend on that boat has even been interviewed, and Nolan's own best friend — who was actually there — says he's heard nothing from investigators at all. The sheriff's current line is that his office won't be rushed. Fair enough. But preserving evidence isn't a conclusion, it's a deadline, and deadlines don't wait on press conferences. While agencies were still deciding whether any of this counted as urgent, family friend Elmore Wonsley was out searching the island himself at 6 AM on a borrowed boat. The Wells family has done their part. It's worth asking what, exactly, Mississippi has done with theirs.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Nolan Wells didn't drown on Horn Island so much as he disappeared into a story nobody can quite make add up. Three friends went out with him on the Fourth of July. Three friends came back. His phone turned up later at the boat owner's house — both Snapchat accounts scrubbed, no call to his mother to say it had been found. The official reason Nolan got left behind is that the boat was taking on water, a claim that a marine mechanic could confirm or blow apart with a look at the bilge pump — a look nobody seems to have taken, since there's no sign the boat has ever been impounded or examined. Meanwhile the friends have already lawyered up, and the one kid who was actually on the island with Nolan says investigators haven't so much as called him. A Jackson County judge's stepson was aboard that same boat. The Coast Guard logged a missing person report at 11 PM and passed on it. Two days later, and after a multi-agency search turned up nothing, Nolan's body was found exactly where he was last seen. His family didn't trust the state to give them a straight cause of death, so they ordered their own autopsy. Hundreds have marched through Ocean Springs demanding transparency, and the funeral will need an arena that seats ten thousand people. Somewhere between a wiped phone, an unexamined boat, and a sheriff who says his office won't be rushed, there's a version of the Fourth of July that a group of teenagers is working very hard to keep to themselves.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Connor Pugs tells a Storytime about a Minecraft Kid Burns Down Neighborhood, Blames It On “Ender Dragon” Today i tell a story because this minecraft obsessed kid burns down his neighborhood, but he thinks it is fine bc the "ender dragon did it" this story is cringey but also funny, so try not to laugh at this story!
There's a version of the Nolan Wells case where three friends panic, make a bad call, and everything else is just grief and bad luck. And there's the version where a wiped phone, a lawyered-up friend group, and a boat nobody's bothered to inspect start to look like something else entirely. Nolan went out to Horn Island for the Fourth of July with three friends; only three came back. His phone eventually surfaced at the boat owner's house — Snapchat wiped on it, no phone call to his mother letting her know it had turned up. The friends' story is that Nolan wanted to stay behind for a girl. The girl's story doesn't match. The stated reason the boat left him behind — that it was taking on water — has never been independently checked, because as far as anyone can tell, the boat itself has never been examined by investigators at all. Nolan's own best friend, who was there that day, says he's never even been contacted. A Jackson County judge's stepson was on that boat too. The Coast Guard got a call at 11 PM and decided it wasn't urgent. Two days and a failed search later, Nolan was found face down in the water, right where he was last seen alive. His parents ordered their own autopsy rather than take Mississippi's word for it. Hundreds have marched in Ocean Springs. The funeral needs an arena. And the sheriff's answer to all of it, so far, is that his office won't be rushed — which is a strange thing to say about evidence with an expiration date.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? CNN asked Sheriff John Ledbetter one direct question: have all the friends from the boat been interviewed? He didn't answer. More than a week into the Nolan Wells investigation, that's the pattern. The sheriff has confirmed witness interviews happened. He's confirmed FBI contact. He's confirmed his investigators are working with the District Attorney. He's praised public tips as "very productive." But the most basic question about the most basic investigative step gets silence — and Nolan's own best friend, who was on Horn Island that day and has been talking to every outlet that calls, says investigators have never contacted him.The new message from the sheriff is that his investigators will not be rushed. There's a problem with that framing. Conclusions can take a year. Evidence collection can't. Snapchat's servers hold deleted content for a limited recovery window. Location history gets purged on rolling schedules. Cell tower records — the dataset that could establish with one timestamp whether Nolan's phone left the island while he was still on it — cycle out. A one-page preservation letter could freeze all of it without a warrant. Whether one was ever sent, the public has no way of knowing. And the boat — the one that was supposedly taking on water, the entire reason four friends left one friend behind — has never been publicly inspected. A marine mechanic could verify or destroy that claim in an afternoon. Elmore Wonsley searched the island himself at dawn on a borrowed boat. The family keeps doing the state's work. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
There's a single piece of paper that could freeze every digital answer in the Nolan Wells case exactly where it sits. Federal law allows any law enforcement agency — including a county sheriff running a death investigation — to send a one-page preservation demand to Snapchat, Life360, Apple, Google, and the cell carriers. It requires no warrant, no judge, and no probable cause. It doesn't let anyone read a single message. It just stops the deletion clock. Whether Jackson County ever sent those letters, nobody outside the department knows. And that's the problem running through this entire investigation: from the outside, an investigation moving quietly and an investigation not moving at all look identical. Both look like silence. Sheriff Ledbetter won't confirm whether all the friends from the boat have been interviewed. Nolan's best friend — publicly available, publicly talking — says investigators have never called him. The boat at the center of the friends' explanation, the one that was supposedly taking on water, has never been publicly examined. It's been sitting at a private dock in the custody of the same family whose house Nolan's phone turned up at.Every answer in this case exists somewhere — on a server, in a hull, in a phone, in a memory. Snapchat recovery windows are closing. Location history is being purged on schedule. Honest memories are hardening into aligned stories. Elmore Wonsley didn't wait — he was searching the island on a borrowed boat at dawn. His son was due at football training the Monday they found him. The family has done everything except the one thing they can't: make Mississippi use the tools that exist.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Three friends left Nolan Wells on an uninhabited barrier island and came home with his phone. Their version of what happened doesn't match the only other witness. And every detail that's surfaced since points the same direction — people protecting themselves, not a teenager who chose to stay behind. The phone was at the house of the family that owned the boat. Both Snapchat accounts were wiped. The Life360 data didn't match the Snapchat locations his friends were showing that night. A video went viral that millions assumed showed Nolan in an altercation — but his best friend says he's not sure it's Nolan, and another friend went on record claiming it's his own voice, not Nolan's. Crump disagrees. The video is disputed. The phone is not.The Coast Guard got a missing person report at 11 PM on July 4th and said it "did not require assistance." The formal search didn't start until after noon the next day. The sheriff said "no foul play" before any autopsy. Nolan's father and his football coach were out searching the island on a borrowed boat hours before anyone with a helicopter decided to look.Hundreds marched through Ocean Springs demanding answers. Both autopsy results are still pending. And the phone that could tell everyone what happened that day is sitting with the family's lawyers because they don't trust the investigation to handle it.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In this episode of The Product Podcast by Product School, Carlos González de Villaumbrosia sits down with Saral Jain, SVP of Engineering at Snapchat, the last independent social platform operating at global scale, with 956 million monthly active users closing in on the one billion mark and a community that opens the app more than 30 times a day. Saral joined Snap nine years ago, right around the IPO, after nearly a decade leading engineering teams at Amazon Web Services, and today leads all engineering for Snapchat, spanning product experiences, multi-cloud infrastructure, and the company's machine learning and generative AI platforms. What you'll learn:How Snap lets designers and product managers ship production code, with an AI agent running the first review pass on 90% of code within 5 minutesWhat Casper is: the AI teammate any team at Snap can invoke from Slack or Jira to build a working prototype from a conversationHow Snap turned company-wide AI adoption into business impact after early prototypes were being built and thrown awayHow lean startup squads mix engineers, designers, and data scientists to launch zero-to-one bets inside a mature platformKey takeaways:Quality control does not have to slow down who gets to ship, it has to change what reviews the work firstWidespread AI adoption is not the same as business impact, and the gap between the two is where most AI investment is being wasted right nowSmall, cross-functional teams with blurred roles can move faster than traditional org structures, even inside a billion-user companyCredits:Host: Carlos Gonzalez de VillaumbrosiaGuest: Saral JainSocial Links:Find out more about Product School hereFollow our Podcast on TikTok hereFollow Product School on LinkedIn here

Four hours of the Rickey Smiley Morning Show and not a single dull moment. Bishop Joseph Walker opens with a word about divine timing that you may need to hear right now. Then the news hits — a powerful U.S. senator is dead, and another one hasn't been seen in public in so long that people are genuinely wondering if he's still alive. Gary With the Tea unpacks Jay-Z's historic Yankee Stadium residency: the A-list surprise nobody was officially told about, thousands of fans stuck outside for hours, Blue Ivy stepping into the spotlight in a way that broke the internet, and a freestyle from Hov that dragged Colin Kaepernick's name back into a very uncomfortable NFL conversation. A former NFL star is facing explosive allegations with over 100 messages now in front of a judge. Iggy Azalea showed up to the World Cup and left people with serious questions — and Britney Spears was spotted doing something on a Los Angeles freeway that had everyone concerned. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump joins the show live with new details on the Nolan Wells case — a pool party photo, deleted Snapchats, a cell phone that went back to shore without its owner, and why none of the timelines are adding up. Two families. Two drowning cases. Two sets of deleted messages. Tyler Perry, Byron Allen, and Colin Kaepernick are all now involved — and the reasons why will stop you cold. Special K drops the Man Laws, Black Tony calls in with breaking news about a music legend that turns into one of the funniest moments of the week, and Marc Morial closes out the show with a sharp message about Black America, power, and what's coming this fall. It's all here — four hours, no filler, nothing held back.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Gary With the Tea is back, and it's a lot. A former NFL star is in serious legal trouble — over 100 messages just got handed to a judge, and what they allegedly reveal is something you won't believe. Then, fans think something is very wrong with Iggy Azalea's face after World Cup pictures surfaced in the blazing Texas heat — and Gary has thoughts. Plus, Britney Spears was hanging out of a moving car on the highway, and her explanation only raised more questions. Then, civil rights attorney Ben Crump joins the show live to speak on the Nolan Wells case — and he drops new details about a pool party photo, deleted Snapchats, and why the cell phone alone should have everyone asking hard questions about what really happened on that island.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If you've ever thought, ‘I want feedback, but I'm terrified of the internet,' stay tuned—I'll show you how to get useful criticism without letting trolls live rent-free in your head. Two Types of FeedbackI'm sharing how I handle trolls, reviews, and feedback—and how you can turn all of that into fuel to grow your show instead of reasons to quit. I'll walk you through when to ignore, when to engage, and how to build a trusted focus group that helps you make your podcast better without letting anonymous strangers live rent‑free in your head.Trolls, Critics and Focus GroupsI break down the difference between true trolls, genuine critics, and helpful focus groups—and how each one fits (or doesn't) into your growth as a podcaster. I share real stories about nitpicky typo trolls, cyberbullying from years ago, people who send you two and a half pages of “do a different show,” and how other podcasters are using their audience—and even Snapchat—to get honest, constructive criticism.By the end, you'll see why I say feedback is the “breakfast of champions,” and why your fear of judgment shouldn't keep your show stuck on your hard drive. What You'll LearnTrolls vs. Focus GroupsHow I define a troll: unsolicited, emotionally charged feedback that's mostly about getting a reaction. How I define a focus group: people who actually want to help shape and improve your show. Why some “trolls” are really just frustrated fans who want attention.Classic Troll Bait TopicsThe three topics that almost guarantee you'll attract trolls:PoliticsNews / current eventsReligionWhy I'm okay with pushback when I brush up against these—and why you should expect it if your show leans into them.My Rules for Dealing with TrollsRule #1: Don't feed the trolls.I talk about why I always try to wait before responding. How I “kill them with kindness” when I choose to reply. Why I often simply say, “Thanks for the feedback,” and move on.How I remind myself that sometimes people are just having a bad day, and I happened to be standing in front of them.Turning Feedback into a Tool for GrowthThe key question I always ask: “Do they have a point?”An example: being told, “You interrupt your guests too much,” and how I go back, listen, and honestly assess if they're right. How I respond when someone clearly just wants me to do a completely different show than the one I want to make. How I Engage Without Losing My CoolWhy I sometimes ask, “How could I have done this better?” to separate useful advice from empty criticism. How I ask for evidence or sources in a non-defensive way:“I'm interested in digging into this—can you share a link?”When I'll share my sources and politely stand my ground. When I decide it's time to block, report, and move on, especially on platforms like YouTube.Knowing My Audience (and My Why)How knowing who my show is for makes it easier to ignore the wrong people. Why I consider the nastiest haters as “not my target audience.”The math I look at: out of hundreds of reviews, only a tiny percentage are negative—but they love to hog my attention if I let them.Stories and Examples I ShareMark Maron on Trolls as “Frustrated Love”A clip from Mark Maron talking about trolls who keep coming back. How he describes repeat trolls as people who are weirdly in love with you and just want you to get mad so they feel seen. The Typo TrollThe listener who went absolutely ballistic over typos and sent me 5–6 paragraph rants. How I handled it when the comments got personal. How I eventually “trolled the troll” with humor and kindness and watched him disappear (and reappear…and disappear again).Madame Strangeways & Fear of FeedbackA conversation with Madame Strangeways who was reluctant to ask for feedback because of a cyberbullying incident 20 years ago.How I encourage her (and you) to start with trusted fans and patrons as a safe focus group. My “too much salt in the bread” analogy: people who love what you're making will still tell you if something's off, because they have to consume it.Jr. Sparrow & Building a Focus GroupHow Jr. Sparrow used Snapchat's Snap Map to find brutally honest listeners. How he turned “this show is crap” comments into a small group that now:Helps him curate which episodes to release.Shapes themes and content months in advance. Why he says you need “skin like Shrek” (thick skin, many layers) if you want to attach dollar signs to your show.Using Feedback Before You PublishHow experienced podcasters (including me) use feedback on topics, guests, and angles before episodes ever hit the feed. Why I'd rather kill an episode early than spend years promoting something that doesn't resonate with my audience.SnapChat's Snap Map FeatureSnapchat's Snap Mapshttps://youtu.be/l4R-wu42gZk?si=BVhAiDeB_Tq6anoOGetting Data From Snap Maphttps://youtu.be/qGxblSXvEbU?si=KoeDP8aI32uKvKjSMy Key Takeaways for YouYou are already being judged—at Home Depot, in the grocery line, everywhere—so a few online comments shouldn't paralyze you.A tiny slice of reviews will be negative; they don't outweigh the huge percentage of people who get value from your show.Feedback is how you get better. You can't fix what you don't know is broken.Learn to separate:Trolls – don't feed them, or reply calmly and briefly.Constructive critics – look for the truth in what they're saying.True fans / focus groups – invite them in and let them help you refine the show.If someone hates your show and clearly isn't who you're trying to reach, there's a simple name for them: not your audience.Mentioned in This EpisodeSchool of Podcasting – Where I help you plan, launch, and grow your podcast, including listener parties to get safe, constructive feedback.Ask the Podcast Coach – My live call-in/chat show for free podcast consulting.Podpage – Website platform for podcasters (I'm the Head of Podcasting there).Madame Strangeways – True strange stories at madamestrangeways.com.Jr. Sparrow – WVU Uncommon Place – Society and culture in West Virginia.Call to ActionTell me what you think:Let me know one thing you love and one thing you'd change about this show at schoolofpodcasting.com/contact or schoolofpodcasting.com/voicemail.Need help with your podcast? If you want a safe place to get honest feedback and improve your show, join me at SchoolOfPodcasting.com and use the coupon code LISTENER for a discount. Today's Post - https://bahnsen.co/4yeyV0d David Bahnsen uses the idea of asking 19-year-olds what's popular to critique a growing tendency among investors to allocate capital based on youth trends and “shiny objects” rather than fundamentals. He distinguishes learning about generational preferences from turning those preferences into portfolio decisions, arguing this misreads Peter Lynch's “invest in what you know,” which requires deeper research beyond familiarity. Bahnsen cites examples where popularity failed as an investment signal—Forever 21's boom and bankruptcy, Gap's long-term stock decline, Snapchat's extreme volatility despite rising users, and Krispy Kreme's post-IPO collapse—showing that what seems popular is often already priced in. He warns against adopting crypto, Bitcoin, AI-adjacent trades, IPO mania, or meme-stock themes merely to match what younger clients want, emphasizing fiduciary duty, cash flow, intrinsic value, and the idea that fads can be a counter-signal. 00:00 Welcome and Setup 02:01 Why Youth Trends Matter 02:39 Tech Habits vs Investing 06:41 Peter Lynch Misread 09:28 Retail Fads Fail Fast 12:15 Snapchat Popularity Trap 13:34 Krispy Kreme Lesson 16:02 Crypto and AI Pressure 19:33 Shiny Object Investing 21:37 Fiduciary Depth and Close Links mentioned in this episode: DividendCafe.com TheBahnsenGroup.com
