It's so easy to get caught up in the "physical" when you are stricken with chronic pain out of nowhere. This is exactly what happened to Adam. Otherwise healthy for his whole life, Adam began having severe pelvic and back pain, and spent years in the frustrating cycle of specialists and failed treatments. In retrospect, Adam can see so many things in his life that he was unconsciously avoiding, key among them facing his social anxiety and "addiction" to the gym for safety. I moved out over a year ago, and since then, I've been living on my own and listening to your show. Over the past year, I've been processing and grieving my childhood. Your show has been incredibly helpful in identifying the true extent of the abuse I endured, understanding how to apply philosophy to my life, and learning how to be a peaceful parent. The impact it has had on my life is immeasurable.Right now, I find myself doing little outside of going to work. On weekends, I rarely leave my house except to run errands, play basketball at the park, or occasionally hang out in person with my Xbox friends. My biggest struggle at the moment is a porn addiction. Most weekends, I give in to the urge, which completely drains my energy, leaving the next few days as a write-off. This has been a major contributor to my social anxiety and inhibition when talking to women. It's left me completely drained. Yet here I am, forcing myself awake when I'd normally be sleeping for days, seeking mindfulness in the midst of a coastal storm. There's something about standing in driving rain and howling wind that grounds me completely in the present moment – perhaps my own unique form of meditation.My journey to taper off psychiatric medications remains stalled, with NSW Health not providing the responses I'd hoped for. I'm exploring Plan B, C, and D options, though doing this without proper support feels daunting. The contrast couldn't be starker when it comes to therapy – I've experienced major breakthroughs with Internal Family Systems therapy that I can't wait to share once I can properly articulate them. In today's episode, we're going to be talking about how to break free from a limited life controlled by debilitating social anxiety and public speaking phobia.Marla Genova began having panic attacks while speaking at the podium at age 12. She lived a very limited life until her late 20s when she began facilitating support groups and sharing many different methods and resources. She has worked with thousands of people with social anxiety and/or public speaking fear for the past 19 years through individual and group sessions, workshops, including a 16-hour intensive weekend workshop for many years. Marla uses a cognitive-behavioral therapy approach that focuses strictly on anxiety, not presentation techniques or Toastmasters-like tips. She teaches you how to genuinely connect with your audience, calm your physical symptoms and empower your thought patterns, by shifting the critical, negative thoughts about yourself into much larger, positive perspectives. She has the unique combination of her own personal anxiety journal, a Masters in Psychology and a professional background as a researcher and author of scientific journal publications in mental health clinical trials at Yale University and at the University of Connecticut Health Center for 25 years. Marla became a certified master coach through the International Coaching Federation in 2017 and founded Socially Speaking LLC in 2018. She offers in-person in Connecticut services and remote services worldwide: complimentary support groups, individual and group sessions, workshops, finds customized resources for loved ones trying to help someone with this type of anxiety. She mostly works with ages 18 and up but has recently been working with teenagers and youth to overcome the fear of phone calls, and job and college interviews anxiety. Having suffered from intense social anxiety from ages 12-30, she strongly advocates for transitioning youth as early as possible, before it severely limits their personal and professional lives.
