In this episode of the TeacherCast Podcast, Jeff sits down with Sue Ann Towle from https://metametricsinc.com/ (MetaMetrics) to discuss the https://educatoracademy.lexile.com/ (Lexile & Quantile Educator Academy), a new self-paced professional learning program to help teachers learn how to have a deeper understanding of Lexile and Quantile frameworks. To receive a http://educatoracademy.lexile.com/ ($10 discount, please use the code "TeachCast") If you are a new listener to TeacherCast, we would love to hear from you. Please visit our http://teachercast.net/contact (Contact Page) and let us know how we can help you today! In This Episode ...Both the Lexile and Quantile courses offer an interactive curriculum featuring direct instruction, knowledge checks, summative assessments, and performance tasks. Each course is 10-hours, self-paced and asynchronous. Upon completion of the professional development courses, teachers become Certified Lexile or Quantile Educators. In addition, in more than 20 states, teachers will be awarded CEUs or professional development hours on completion of each course. Summer has long been the time for teachers to take advantage of professional development opportunities, particularly options that are self-directed. A https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_briefs/RBA196-1.html (recent study by Rand's American Teacher Panel) revealed that 99 percent of teachers surveyed said they participated in professional learning activities over summer break. http://educatoracademy.lexile.com/ () “After facing the challenges of the 2020-2021 school year, teachers tell us they are looking for professional development opportunities to help individualize instruction when they return to the classroom in the fall,” said Malbert Smith, CEO and co-founder, MetaMetrics. “With our Lexile and Quantile certification courses, teachers can leverage the measures their students are likely already receiving through a state or classroom assessment and learn about strategies and resources for implementing individualized instruction.” Teachers who complete the courses will gain a deeper understanding of how to make the Lexile and Quantile frameworks actionable for learning and discover award-winning tools and resources on the Lexile or Quantile Hub to support their efforts. They will also learn strategies for communicating effectively with parents about student performance and growth and ways to use the universal measures with their colleagues. Educators who participated in a preview of the Quantile Certification Course had high praise. “This has been a very valuable course. I had zero background in all things related to Quantile measures,” said Laura Graham, elementary teacher at Pender County Schools in North Carolina, “This will help me better plan for my students, sharing with my colleagues, and communicating with parents. The myriad resources allow me to expand my knowledge of teaching mathematics.” Each course is $99. For information about volume discounts, contact support@lexile.com. In This Episode We DiscussWhy we believe that kids today need to be taught the basics of copyright. It has become an essential element of digital literacy. Students may not realize it, but copyright and fair use are relevant to online activities they engage in virtually every day, both as consumers and creators and both at school and at home. What resources Copyright and Creativity offersA full suite of K-12 resources, including lesson plans, lesson slides, learning videos, visual aids, and a professional development course for teachers. Available for free. How Copyright and Creativity aims to make these resources engaging and effective for kidsBalance -- development process took input from all sides, avoided serving as propaganda for a particular viewpoint in ongoing debates over copyright policy. Take a positive approach, emphasizing what copyright enables and allows. Avoid teaching it as a set of negative and restrictive “thou shalt nots.” Emphasize kids' own role as creators Provide teachers with videos that walk through the trickiest parts, and with professional development, if they feel they need more background in copyright before they'd feel comfortable teaching itVery age appropriate-- shorter, wordless videos for younger students (K-4) and real world examples of copyright in action for older students. Provide practical info about the copyright-related activities kids regularly engage in: acquisition, sharing, and using someone else's creative work in some new creation of their own. In this episode of the TeacherCast Podcast, Jeff sits down with ASCD Author Mike Anderson to discuss his new book https://www.teachercast.net/product/1416627049/US/teach00-20/?cart=y (What We Say and How We Say It Matter: Teacher Talk that Improves Student Learning and Behavior). https://www.teachercast.net/product/1416627049/US/teach00-20/?cart=y ()In this episode, you will learn: What is the importance of the language a teacher uses in the classroom? What first made you aware of the importance of teacher talk? What are some common examples of how teachers end up talking in ways that don't align with their good goals for students? How can negative teacher talk affect students? What are the benefits of positive teacher talk? What steps can teachers take to improve the way they talk in the classroom? What should a teacher do if they have an idea for a book? About Mike AndersonMike Anderson has been an educator for more than 25 years. An elementary school teacher for 15 years, he has also taught preschool and university graduate level classes. He spent many years as a presenter, consultant, author, and developer for Northeast Foundation for Children, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping create safe, joyful, and challenging classrooms and schools. In 2004 Anderson received a national Milken Educator Award, and in 2005 he was a finalist for New Hampshire Teacher of the Year. Now, as an education consultant, Anderson works with schools in rural, urban, and suburban settings. He is the author of many books about great teaching and learning, including https://www.teachercast.net/product/1416627049/US/teach00-20/?cart=y (What We Say and How We Say It Matter: Teacher Talk that Improves Student Learning and Behavior) (ASCD, 2019), The Well-Balanced Teacher (ASCD, 2010) and https://www.teachercast.net/product/1416610693/US/teach00-20/?cart=y (Learning to Choose, Choosing to Learn) (ASCD, 2016). Links of InterestTwitter:http://www.twitter.com/balancedteacher ( Balancedteacher) Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/wellbalancedteacher (facebook.com/wellbalancedteacher ) About the BookWe all want our students to feel safe, collaborate well with others, feel ownership for their learning, and be joyfully engaged in their work. Nevertheless, many teachers end up using language patterns that undermine these goals. Do any of these scenarios sound familiar?
We want students to take responsibility for their learning, yet we use language that implies teacher ownership. We want to build positive relationships with students, yet we use sarcasm when we get frustrated. We want students to think learning is fun, yet we sometimes make comments that suggest the opposite. We want students to exhibit good behavior because it's the right thing to do, yet we rely on threats and bribes, which implies students don't naturally want to be good.
What teachers say to students—when they praise or discipline, give directions or ask questions, and introduce concepts or share stories—affects student learning and behavior. A slight change in intonation can also dramatically change how language feels for students. In https://www.teachercast.net/product/1416627049/US/teach00-20/?cart=y (What We Say and How We Say It Matter), Mike Anderson digs into the nuances of language in the classroom. This book's many examples will help teachers examine their language habits and intentionally improve their classroom practice so their language matches and supports their goals. We wish to thank http://ascd.org (ASCD) for helping to put this podcast together. In this episode, we discuss: The phases children progress through as they master their facts What does fluency mean? How is it different from automaticity? How do games provide meaningful fact practice? What are the disadvantages of timed testing? What alternatives are there to timed testing? Why is it important for teachers and parents to understand the distinction between foundational facts and derived facts, and how should that impact instructional choices? How do we help families understand there are better ways to teach and assess facts? Kling has taught elementary mathematics content and methods courses for the past 15 years at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. About Math Fact FluencyMastering the basic facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is an essential goal for all students. Most educators also agree that success at higher levels of math hinges on this fundamental skill. But what's the best way to get there? Are flash cards, drills, and timed tests the answer? If so, then why do students go into the upper elementary grades (and beyond) still counting on their fingers or experiencing math anxiety? What does research say about teaching basic math facts so they will stick? In http://www.ascd.org/Publications/Books/Overview/Math-Fact-Fluency.aspx (Math Fact Fluency), experts Jennifer Bay-Williams and Gina Kling provide the answers to these questions—and so much more. In this episode of the https://www.teachercast.net/episodes/teachercast-podcast/ (TeacherCast Podcast), we welcome Raysana Hurtado from Intel and California Educator, Kennan Scott, onto the program to discuss how Intel is transforming education by demonstrating what might be possible in not just the “classroom of the future”, but the “classroom of the present”. This year, Intel traveled across the country working with teachers and students to showcase their Intel's Tech Learning Lab, a custom-built, mobile truck that is filled with the most amazing virtual reality and augmented reality workstations to provide hands-on activities to teach students about coding and robotics. I'd like to thank Intel for joining me for this podcast. In this episode, we discuss: The future classroom is one that incorporates powerful technology and encourages creative approaches to learning, supporting education goals today and for tomorrow. Until now, classroom technology has been used as an add-on to existing instructional methods rather than as tools to improve or revolutionize instruction. Cutting-edge technology-based educational programs can emphasize deeper collaboration and engagement, versus student instruction on software that likely will be obsolete by the time they enter the workforce. Intel's Tech Learning Lab is an example of how innovative teaching methods, like hands-on, dynamic learning, can help educators build the leaders of tomorrow by developing fundamental career skills like communication, collaboration, self-awareness, problem-solving, critical thinking and more. Some of the demo sessions on the tour include coding a drone to fly, hands-on lessons through virtual reality, introduction to artificial intelligence, design thinking skills, and more. Some of the truck's VR experiences allowed participants to: Take a virtual field trip to the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. Develop virtual robots in the Robotics lab using RoboEngineers by Filament Games. Pilot a spaceship and travel the universe to explore the Milky Way galaxy via virtual reality by VictoryVR. Participate in virtual frog dissections, providing a safer, cost-effective, and more humane life science/anatomy lessons by VictoryVR. Program highlights to-date include:2,150+ students, educators and general public have participated in immersive educational experiences through the Tech Learning Lab 1,020+ virtual tours of the Smithsonian American Art Museum's “No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man” exhibit 700+ frogs virtually dissected through hands-on science lessons  Technologies in the campaign included Intel AI, PCs by Intel, Lenovo, Alienware, HP, virtual reality by Oculus and HTC Vive and more.
