People all around the world create annual events that align with our 10 Principles. Some have over 10,000 participants like events in Israel and South Africa. Some have under 20 participants, like “Melting Man” in Fargo, North Dakota. Apparently, Jen Psaki thinks Americans are not smart enough to catch her flip-flopping on the facts about what she actually says! Last week, she clearly said, "We're flagging problematic posts for Facebook that spread disinformation. We're working with doctors and medical experts…who are popular with their audience with accurate information, … so, we're helping get trusted content out there.” So now she is saying they “have not asked Facebook to block any individual posts”. America's entire electrical grid is in very poor shape. Those massive transmission tower systems are old and are not being rapidly rebuilt (think “infrastructure”). Our systems of electric generation can be both haphazardous and problematic (remember the 2021 Texas Freeze). As of March 18, 2021, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, reports our primary ways of generating electricity are 1.) natural gas - 40%, 2.) nuclear energy - 20%, 3.) coal - 19%, 4.) wind - 8.4%, 5.) hydropower (dams) - 7.3%, 6.) solar - 2.3%, 7.) biomass - 1.4%, and 8.) geothermal - 0.4%. Even so, the Socialist-Democrats, including the Biden Administration, wants to force the automobile industry to only produce products which would have zero emissions output by 2025!Our American Mamas, Teri Netterville and Denise Arthur, do not think it is funny to get sick with the Coronavirus. But they do think there are a lot of very odd things going on with those Texas House Democrats — all to avoid having to vote and lose on some Texas Election Reform Bills! Thus, they fled out of Texas, in mass, on private chartered planes, with at least one case of beer and no masks. What they did is NOT for “the cause of democracy”! It specifically was to block democratic rule in the Texas House of Representatives! In addition, a big question is if they were all vaccinated and none have any symptoms, why were they tested for COVI-19? WOW! So older generations were told to save money for their retirement and senior years, and apparently a lot of them did! The Wall Street Journal reports, “Baby boomers and older Americans have spent decades accumulating an enormous stockpile of money. At the end of this year's first quarter, Americans age 70 and above had a net worth of nearly $35 trillion, according to Federal Reserve data.” Needless to say, the Biden Administration and the Socialist-Democrat Members of Congress want a big chunk of that money for themselves!People are making personal decisions about getting vaccinated based upon “risk/benefit” calculations. In other words, do my age, my health, and the size of my community make me more likely to get COVID-19 or less likely to do so. Older people living in bigger, more densely populated communities are probably going to get vaccinated. Younger people, especially if living in more rural communities are not. Using a pronoun for a person which is not that person's “preferred gender” has been made a violation of law in a number of states, as well as by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights provisions. California had such a provision in its long-term care facility code (HSC § 1439.51). This meant caregivers in long-term care facilities could be fined $1,000 and a year in prison. With a 3-0 ruling, a California Court of Appeal has struck down this pronoun provision saying it violates the 1st Amendment Right of Free Speech because it was restricting speech based upon the content of that speech. This is a very specific ruling on California law, but it is encouraging.
In this episode Athena talks about the possibility of the Zodiac killer being Ted "the Unabomber" Kaczynski. We also go over some of the nefarious projects DARPA has worked on over the last five decades and the "conspiracy theory" about HAARP being responsible for the Texas freeze last February. There may be a little rant or two mixed in so have fun with that!
On Thursday's Houston Matters: Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez testifies today in his confirmation hearing as Pres. Joe Biden's pick to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement. We preview what he's likely to be asked about his stance on key immigration issues and his track record in law enforcement in Greater Houston. Also this hour: ERCOT has created a roadmap to making the state's electricity grid more reliable and submitted it to the governor and the legislature. We learn what it entails. And we learn about a lawsuit filed against Chevron, alleging the energy company failed to deliver natural gas during February's freeze, which has been linked to nearly 200 deaths statewide. Then, a recent report says the number of craft breweries in Houston has grown 344 percent since 2013. We examine what's behind the trend and if it's sustainable. And, beginning June 29, One Fifth Houston, Chef Chris Shepherd's rotating concept restaurant in Montrose, will become One Fifth Red Sauce Italian. It will feature Italian-American fare, including a Midwestern childhood favorite of Shepherd's – toasted ravioli. T-ravs are also a favorite of Houston Matters host Craig Cohen, having grown up in St. Louis. He visits the restaurant to learn about Shepherd's version and discuss their preferred variations on the appetizer and consider why it's so popular in some parts of the Midwest but has never really caught on in Houston or the rest of the country.

Artemis Live - Insurance-linked securities (ILS), catastrophe bonds (cat bonds), reinsurance
For our latest Artemis Live interview we wanted to take a deep-dive into into the recent severe winter weather and deep freeze event that affected a significant proportion of the United States in February, hitting Texas particularly hard. Early estimates suggested the potential for the insurance and reinsurance market, including insurance-linked securities (ILS) funds, to face losses of $15bn to $20bn. Over the last couple of weeks estimates have been coming down slightly, as greater clarity on the losses emerged, particularly with some reporting from the major nationwide insurance carriers most exposed in Texas. To help me dive deeper into the insurance claims environment related to this event, we invited two senior Verisk Analytics execs with years of experience on the claims-side of the market, Mike Fulton, President of Xactware and Tom Johansmeyer, Head of PCS to this interview. The pair explained why the winter storm and freezing weather does not seem to be driving an insurance and reinsurance industry loss as high as early predictions had suggested. But Fulton of Xactware also explained the scale of the claims deluge his firm's systems saw coming in, with huge numbers of claims seen flowing from Texas and the surrounding area. Fulton said that a typical February might see around 400,000 claims in Xactware's systems from across the US, but in 2021 the company saw nearly a million claims assignments logged. "More than half of those (claims) being from freezing weather and burst pipes," Fulton explained. "Roughly 30% of those 1 million claims, were due to what we believe to be freeze claims in Texas alone. "So the impact when comparing to a normal year, for the personal lines market, was really significant." We also discussed business interruption and the Johansmeyer of PCS said that the BI component of this winter storm loss hasn't manifested to the degree some feared, although some BI claims are anticipated.

She went to culinary school and has been catering for 20 years. A little over 3 years ago her family needed to make some extra money. She started preparing dinners and selling them out of her home. She got a menu together and would have a pick up day once a week. It grew so much- just through word of mouth- that about a year ago they moved into a storefront. They do pick up and deliveries for the Dallas/Fort Worth area. They do pick up and deliveries on Tuesdays. She is now a full time working mom and loves putting together creative, delicious menus every week. Her purpose to it bring families back together at the dinner table. She provides and easy way to have a homecooked, healthy dinner without the prep work. She wants to support moms and give them a break in the kitchen. DeLaine is also a really good party planner. Here are some of her tips for planning a party:If she’s doing a birthday party, she’ll start with the theme first, gather the decorations that go with the theme, then you can work on the food part. But for her fall party, she wanted the experience to be about the food. It was a sit down dinner for her mom friends. She knew she would be using her fall decorations because the party was a “fall dinner”When you are planning a party, do one part of the party at a time. For example, do the decorating in one chunk and the food in another.Decorate the day before so you keep it separate from the food prep.Find a friend to help you. Maybe they are amazing at decorating, or great with the food, or maybe they are just there to be your helper while you get things ready.Figure out what is the most important and let the rest go. Spend your energy on what matters the most to you. The most important thing is gathering people togetherBiggest Tip: Make sure you always have a solid main dish so your guests aren’t hungry. You can have your guests help with the sides, but to ensure you have a substantial meal, handle the main dish yourself.Use your own home decor as part of the decorations. Grab out one of your vases to display something. When you are shopping for decor, think ahead about how useful it is. Editor's note: An earlier version of this story was originally produced by Houston Public Media and has been updated for The World. For the last three weeks, Houston plumber Eduardo Dolande has been working long hours to help repair burst pipes in local homes and businesses.Just in his own Houston neighborhood of Cypress, Dolande, who has worked as a plumber for 21 years, said he's helped about a dozen families with their pipes — as a favor, free of charge. The destruction he's seen inside some homes looks like something out of a movie, he said.“It's just wet sheetrock everywhere, and then the insulation that was up in the attic was on the floor. ... It just looked horrible."Eduardo Dolande, plumber, Houston, Texas“It's just wet sheetrock everywhere, and then the insulation that was up in the attic was on the floor,” Dolande said, “It just looked horrible."One of the damaged homes was his own. At one point, he ran out of supplies to fix his own pipes after using them to help his neighbors. His plumber friends eventually helped him find some replacement parts, which have been in short supply since the storm. He had to cut open parts of his ceiling in two bathrooms and other parts of the house to reach busted pipes and repair them. Since he knew to turn off his water before the freeze, the damage in his own home was minimal — but the family still had water all over the floors while they tried to fix multiple burst pipes. Dolande said his neighborhood was also hit hard by Hurricane Harvey, but that the freeze was worse because it took people by surprise. “No power, no water,” Dolande said. “People get desperate over that.” Related: Freezing temps wreak havoc on utilities in US and Mexico“I've never seen that much damage in homes,” he said. “Never.” In the aftermath of the storm, plumber Eduardo Dolande also had to fix the pipes in his own home. Credit: Courtesy of the Dolande family Texas' largest insurer, State Farm, has reported more than 44,000 claims in the state related to the winter storm. That's more than 10 times the total number of burst pipe claims they saw nationally in 2020. And immigrant workers — like Dolande, who is from Panama — are critical to repairing that damage, according to Jeremy Robbins, director of the New American Economy think tank. “As people are trying to build back, they're trying to repair their houses, they're trying to figure out how to survive the damage, immigrants are playing outsized roles in so many of the professions that are essential to the Texas economy,” Robbins said. The group's analysis of 2019 American Community Survey data found that in the city of Houston, about 40% of plumbers and 63% of construction workers are foreign-born.In Texas, 27% of the state's plumbers and 40% of construction workers are foreign-born, though immigrants make up about 17% of the population. And the share of immigrant workers is even higher when other labor-intensive jobs are taken into consideration.“If you look at drywall installers or ceiling tile installers and tapers, more than 75% of them nationwide are immigrants."Jeremy Robbins, director, New American Economy“If you look at drywall installers or ceiling tile installers and tapers, more than 75% of them nationwide are immigrants," Robbins said. Related: From 'aliens' to 'noncitizens' – a Biden word change that matters Houston plumber Eduardo Dolande shows where pipes burst inside his own home during the Texas freeze. Credit: Elizabeth Trovall/Houston Public Media These workers will play a critical role as second responders, since many ceilings — like Dolande's — have been damaged from burst pipes. Steven Scarborough, strategic initiatives manager for the Center for Houston's Future, said without immigrants, weeks-long repair wait times would last even longer.“Imagine all these stories you've heard, how long people [are] waiting for plumbers, and increase that by 37%,” he said. Related: Blackouts across northern Mexico highlight country's energy dependenceThough these immigrant workers are essential to storm recovery in Houston, many come from communities that tend to be disproportionately impacted by catastrophic events.A Rice University survey found nearly two-thirds of Hispanic immigrants in Houston could not come up with $400 to pay for an emergency expense. And those families are also less likely to reach out for aid in a crisis, Scarborough said. Eduardo Dolande and his wife, Mitzila Guerra, became United States citizens after immigrating from Panama. Credit: Elizabeth Trovall/Houston Public Media Eduardo Dolande is a citizen — but many Texas plumbers and hundreds of thousands of construction workers are undocumented. And they've become a convenient political punching bag for Republicans in recent years. During a press conference earlier this week, Governor Greg Abbott told Texans, “There is a crisis on the Texas border right now with the overwhelming number of people who are coming across the border.” Abbott often frames unauthorized immigration as a threat. The governor also recently reopened the state and lifted the mask mandate — a move that confounded Jessica Diaz, who works with day laborers and other immigrant workers as legal manager for the Fe y Justicia Worker Center in Houston. “I want to understand what his point of view is…how we came to the conclusion that this is a good idea?" she said. Diaz said she's concerned about lifting the mask mandate while less than 10% of the state has been fully vaccinated. During the pandemic, her organization has received nearly 400 safety and health complaints. She said day laborers — who offer cheap, immediate repairs — put themselves in vulnerable situations to secure work.“Whoever gets in the car the fastest is the one that's going to get the job. You don't even ask how much they're going to pay you. You don't even ask about the employer, who they are or where they're taking you." Jessica Diaz, legal manager, Fe y Justicia Worker Center, Houston, Texas“Whoever gets in the car the fastest is the one that's going to get the job. You don't even ask how much they're going to pay you. You don't even ask about the employer, who they are or where they're taking you,” Diaz said. In the four weeks after Hurricane Harvey, the University of Illinois found that more than a quarter of day laborers had experienced wage theft. The Fe y Justicia Worker Center is already investigating wage theft claims from workers who helped with winter storm recovery. “This is something we have seen repeatedly since Hurricane Harvey. Houston, in general, is a city that is in constant reconstruction mode,” she said. The pattern of disaster, recovery and abuse is all too familiar — and Diaz said she doesn't see anything changing soon. Eduardo Dolande, who first came to the United States as a tourist in his early 20s, and became a citizen through his wife, Mitzila Guerra, said he hopes people can see that immigrants like him — including those without legal status — are helping the city rebuild. “We are everywhere. We are helping everybody,” Dolande said. “Whether they say they don't need us, or they don't want to accept it, it is so obvious.”

Today's episode is about the crazy week I had here in Houston Texas and an unplanned trip to Louisiana. "Over the weekend, a massive winter storm descended upon the state of Texas, bringing harsh, unprecedented weather to the region: snow, ice, single-digit temperatures. The inclement conditions were punishing enough — most houses in Texas feature little insulation, which prompted many to crank up the heat in their living spaces. But in the early morning hours on Monday, the state's power grid — which was not equipped to handle such frigid conditions — began to buckle under the increased demand, resulting in sweeping power outages. On Tuesday, more than 4 million people across the state didn't have the means to heat their homes, forcing them to resort to desperate — and in some cases, deadly — efforts to stay warm. Meanwhile, unhoused people are freezing to death on the streets. Days later, hundreds of thousands of Texans are still in need of relief. As of Thursday afternoon, about 500,000 homes and businesses across the state are still without power, and many localities are now facing water shortages as a result." https://www.thecut.com/2021/02/how-to... --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/shaun-spencer/support

Each week, I cover the “So what?” of 5 key crypto developments in about 5 minutes. Let’s go. Bitcoin now has a $1 trillion market capThis week the price of bitcoin soared to new highs over $56,000Adoption continues to grow as BlackRock revealed it has started “to dabble” in bitcoin. BlackRock is the world’s largest asset manager with $8.7 trillion under it’s nose. I wonder what “dabble” means to them. So what? The bigger bitcoin becomes, the more attractive it is for institutional investors with big bucks to parkBitcoin is seen as “digital gold” but it still is only a fraction of gold’s $8 trillion market cap Modern solutions tend to be much better than older technology. For example, cars can travel more than 4x as fast as horse-drawn carriages (15 mph). By extension, bitcoin is a better store of value than gold because it is has more characteristics of “hard money”. Some bulls believe that the long-term target market cap for bitcoin is 2-10x gold. If this holds true, we are still in the first innings. Expect the price of bitcoin to rise over time while going through dips and cliffs along the way. [Transition: Speaking of rising prices]Bitcoin is now trading at $80,000 in NigeriaYes, you heard that right. Bitcoin is now trading at a 36% premium in an African country where 40% of people live in poverty. How does this makes sense? Two weeks ago, the Central Bank of Nigeria banned local banks from engaging with cryptocurrency exchanges. The CBN’s rationale is that cryptocurrencies were being used for money laundering. By that extension, we should expect the CBN to also ban local banks from using the naira, dollars, pounds, euros, yen, rand…..you get the picture. Prior to the ban, Nigerians had traded over $560M worth of bitcoin from 2015 to 2020. The ban does not appear to have crushed the demand, rather, it has redirected consumers to person-to-person (P2P) exchanges like Paxful where users do not have to engage with the banking system. Demand for bitcoin in Nigeria is significantly outstripping supply, this has led to a price spike. [Transition: Now, Nigeria is not the only country grappling with crypto laws]India proposes crypto taxIndia like Nigeria is considering a ban on private cryptocurrenciesThe government is considering an 18% tax on cryptocurrency exchange commissions and an income tax on cryptocurrency transactions So what? The Indian government could implement the new taxes retroactively for the period between April 2020 and March 2021, this could be a rude surprise for traders and investors There continues to be vigorous arguments both for and against the ban; some opponents of the ban encourage the government to tax crypto instead of blocking it; it would be difficult to enforce a ban; it would likely be bypassed by person-to-person (P2P) exchanges as in Nigeria.[Nigeria is a big oil producer just like the state of Texas. That brings us to #4] Texas freeze impacts cryptoRecord low temperatures and an onslaught of snow brought Texas to its knees. Widespread power outages wreaked havoc. I know because I lived through it. We did not have power or heat for 3 days while it was 12F (-11C) outside. Not fun. So what?West Texas is an emerging destination for cryptocurrency mining. Miners’ profitability likely plummeted as the price of electricity skyrocketed with surging power demand. Probably made sense to halt mining. Good news is that wind energy proved to be the most resilient piece of Texas power infrastructure. This would be encouraging for the bitcoin miners who recently signed agreements with wind energy producers. Expect more to follow suit. We were already in the midst of a global chip shortage when Austin-based manufacturers like Samsung, Infineon, and NXP shut down production. Chips are used by cryptocurrency miners and there’s increasing competition from computers, gaming, and car manufacturers. The Texas freeze could drive up chip prices. [Transition: This week, NVIDIA announced it is developing chips for ethereum mining only; ethereum is the basis for many DeFi protocols]Bitwise launches first DeFi ETF Bitwise, creator of the largest crypto index fund, has now launched a DeFi index fundSo what?Interest in decentralized finance (DeFi) is booming with $39B total value locked up, up from $1.2B last year; this week Uniswap became the first decentralized exchange (DEX) to reach $100B volumeDeFi enables users to access a range of financial services peer-to-peer using blockchain and cryptoassets rather than legacy systems. Financial services could include trading, loans, interest accounts and much more. I am increasingly excited about the potential for DeFi to drive greater inclusion and better products in Africa and other developing regions. This new ETF enabled retail investors participate in the emergence of this new category This is a public episode. As you've heard, Texas is experiencing unprecedented freezing weather and power outages. Like many of my fellow Texans, I've been without water or electricity - sometimes days. Praise be to God; my family was partially prepared for these events. With that said, assisting neighbors has been the silver lining during these trials. Serving people reminds us why we are Catholic. I am confident that helping people is why you launched your apostolate. But when you fundraise, you naturally have to focus on your apostolate's needs because more funds can help SERVE MORE people. So, where is the balance between focusing on your needs (organizing fundraising campaigns) and staying glued to your mission (serving others as Christ wants you)? Here is my suggestion of where that balance should be: https://catholicfundraiser.net/balance-mission-and-fundraising-during-the-texas-freeze/
