In 2014 Bike Magazine's Hugo Wilson and John Westlake formed two thirds of a three-rider team that rode a V-Strom 1000 from their offices in Peterborough, in the UK, back to the factory it was assembled at in Hamamatsu, Japan. Chris Moss talks to the pair about the journey, the boozy planning session, losing luggage, and imposter syndrome when being met by the welcome party at the factory.

Motos and Friends is brought to you by the Yamaha R7, your gateway to a new generation of supersport machine. In our first segment, Editor Don Williams rides the new Suzuki GSX-8S. This highly anticipated upright-naked sportbike features the all-new parallel twin from the big S, and we have been very excited to try it out. Don really liked the motor in Suzuki's new V-Strom, so it'll be interesting to see if it is perhaps even better suited to a street bike. The big question of course, is who exactly is the target rider for the 8S? Speaking of sportbikes, the Isle of Man TT is arguably the most fearsome, intense—as well as the longest—motorcycle race in the world. The Superbike races are around 225 Miles and 1200 corners, including 2 full pit stops! It takes a very special level of skill, courage, and yes, a large dollop of insanity too, to ride in, let alone win, a TT race. The TT is always the first week in June, so it's on right now—see the links below. Just in time for this year's event, I chat with my Aussie friend, Rennie Scaysbrook. Rennie is the Road Test Editor for Cycle News magazine here in the US. As a fellow journalist, he and I have tested motorcycles at tracks all over the world; he's a great guy, a good laugh. He holds the record for the challenging Pikes Peak Hill Climb, so as you might imagine, he's an especially talented rider too. Rennie rode the IOM TT last year in the Supersport category and acquitted himself well, despite some technical gremlins. He's riding again this year for the Craig Wilson team, but this time he's on a Superstock-class Honda Fireblade CBR1000RR-SP. Now that's a whole different ballgame! Rennie's descriptions of riding the sections around the famed TT course are absolutely electrifying. Do you think you've got the mental fortitude, concentration, and level of skill that it takes to thread the TT needle on country roads through tiny villages at 195 miles per hour? Rennie's take on riding the TT will likely answer that for you. This chat is a doozy—so hold on to your hat for this one. In our first segment, Editor Don Williams has just returned from Sardinia, Italy, where he was riding the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE. This is the all new, upper-middleweight ADV machine that features—among many other things—the new Suzuki 775cc parallel-twin motor. This highly anticipated motorcycle from the big S has a lot of depth to talk about, and Don reviews the bike completely, giving us his impressions both off-pavement and on. ================ Have you looked at the 2023 Suzuki Hayabusa yet? One of the most iconic sportbikes ever, it's faster and the most technologically advanced Hayabusa ever. Check it out in person at your local Suzuki dealer now, or visit suzukicycles.com to learn more. ================ Cat MacLeod, owner of Leod Escapes, gets to chat with Associate Editor Teejay Adams in our second segment. If you Google ‘hedonism', it doesn't actually mention Leod Escapes, but judging by Cat's description of some of his magical MotoGP track-riding tours and associated antics, Google really should include it. Can you think of any better way to spend two weeks than three days of riding a legendary MotoGP circuit, while being coached by World Superbike legend Troy Corser—and then getting to tour the local spectacular area, all the while, staying in upscale hotels and eating the best food? Cat is a great story-teller and he doesn't hold back. Fair warning: you probably should not have kids under 13 listening to this segment, so please be aware of that. As motorcycle people we're often accused of being ‘crazy'. I say: fair enough, we probably are. So have a listen to Cat Macleod, and go book yourself the trip of a lifetime. And no, we don't get paid anything to say that. We love your feedback! Hello & welcome to Front End Chatter with him, Martin Fitz-Gibbons, and me, Simon Harararargreaves. This is episode #173 of a long-running saga, in which we are as ever indebted to Bennetts, the only bike insurers who actually invest a shed-load back into British motorcycling culture to promote the British Superbike series, create an ocean of free content at www.BikeSocial.co.uk, planted the seeds for a rich and fertile YouTube channel, and allow FEC to come in your ears once a fortnight. That's gotta be worth the entry fee. And on this fortnight's FEC we have a new bike blitz with the return of the sports 400 in the unlikely shape of Kawasaki's ZX-4RR, the return of the sports touring supermoto with KTM's 890 SMT, and the debut of Suzuki's V-Strom with a 21in front wheel. We also dive into the FEC sack – and, in a break with tradition, we harvest it from the top down, responding to the most current emails first (mostly commenting on FEC172's rather depressing message about the end of life as we know it). Anyway, we're still here, you're still here, and bikes are still awesome. So we're good. Please keep the questions (bike choice or existential), plus any other queries, comments and funny stories, coming to us at: anything@frontendchatter.com Catch us on the socials at: @SimonHBikes @Mufga Aye.

Hello everyone and welcome once again to Motos and Friends—the weekly Podcast brought to you by the editorial team at Ultimate Motorcycling. This week's we only have the one segment… But if you're interested in a tasting of what's to come in 2023, then you'll want to listen to Don Williams' roundup from the very recent EICMA show in Milan, Italy. Don tells us about new machines coming from some of the major manufacturers, including the Honda XL750 Transalp, the CL500 scambler styled machine, and Honda's light-touring machine derived from the Honda Rebel 1100—and it comes in the DCT version. From Suzuki of course we have the main models featuring that all-new parallel 800 motor we talked about last week. News of the all-new V-Strom 800 DE ADV bike, and the naked upright GSX-8S, are eagerly anticipated, especially by our staff here at Ultimate Motorcycling! Indian have done some interesting things with its lineup of various versions of the awesome FTR 1200, and Royal Enfield have produced a cruiser—the Super Meteor 650—that features its 650 twin motor that powers the Interceptor. From Italy, Aprilia has gone to extremes with the 660 Extrema—basically a track ready version of the well-acclaimed machine. Yamaha interestingly, has revamped the Niken GT—one of the most interesting motorcycles I've ever ridden. Lastly, Don tells us about Kawasaki's newly announced Electric Hybrids Hydrogen fuel cell machines—those are a peek into the near future for sure; love ‘em or hate ‘em, you'd better get used to them as they're just around the corner. EICMA is arguably the most important show in the world for motorcycling, so from all of us here at Ultimate Motorcycling, we hope you enjoy Don's round-up this episode!
Hello everyone and welcome once again to Motos and Friends, a weekly Podcast brought to you by the editorial team at Ultimate Motorcycling. My name is Arthur Coldwells. The V-Strom has always been a superb, yet inexpensive platform, and the new DE variant gets more serious about ADV riding. I find out from Avery whether the new upgrades are worthwhile; and the place that the new V-Strom has in the current market. Our second segment covers a subject that's a little more serious than usual. Many veterans and first responders suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, aka PTSD. Scott Casey—himself a sufferer—decided to try and help his fellow vets, and started a cross-Canada charity ride in 2016 called the ‘Rolling Barrage'. It was—and is—incredibly successful. It's not just a tremendous ride. The Rolling Barrage is a place for like-minded sufferers and their supporters to ride together. They get some serious “wind therapy” whether it's on just a stop, or a leg of the ride, one day, a weekend, or even the whole ride. Scott opens up with Associate Editor Teejay Adams about his personal history, and how he came to create such a brilliant and worthy real-world event that truly helps. The Rolling Barrage is a supportive network of brothers and sisters. To quote Scott Casey: “this is the family you never knew you had”. Comments or suggestions? The following is a computer-generated transcription, some grammar and spelling errors may be inherent Alright guys, we got to talk about Caniglia V. Strong, US Supreme Court. May 17 2021. I've been talking about this case for months. You know, my students have asked me my opinion on it. I've given my opinion. And let me just share a little bit of background about it. But it's a very massive, hugely important case on two fronts. Number one, firearm confiscation and the red flag laws. And number two, a little more guidance on the so called Community caretaking doctrine as it applies to homes. Let me give you just some quick facts. Okay, I know you're busy. I'm busy. I'm in justly No, I'm in the great state of Tennessee. Teaching just out of outside of Nashville, love teaching here. And if you want me to come to your agency, or you want a fellow instructors come to your agency like the great and Kelleher and so forth to come your agency and teaching folks search and seizure, give us a call. Okay. So the background what happened was cops were called to a house because a husband the night before threatened to, you know, he kind of threatened suicide in an indirect way he told his wife that he was tired of fighting tarda arguing, why don't you shoot him, you know, shoot, shoot me right and get it all over with that was kind of like his, his tone. The wife then went to a hotel for the night. She called the husband the next morning, no answer. She feared that he actually did commit suicide, he called the police to do a welfare check on him. They ended up contacting him and he basically assured the cops that it was not a danger to himself. However, he did agree this is in Rhode Island, by the way, he did agree to go to the hospital voluntarily to do a mental, you know, Psych psychiatric evaluation. So why he was gone. The cops then spoke to the wife, right, the wife returned to the home. And I believe this is several hours later, up to four hours later. And the officer then they knew that he had a gun, right or guns, they then entered the home without a warrant without consent, and no exigency to go seize the husband's firearms, why community caretaking? If we can, if we don't seize these guns, maybe he comes back after the hospital and kills his wife kills himself and so forth. So this is, you know, something like best practice, right? Well, the husband then sues to get his guns back, he has a lot of problems getting his guns back, and so forth. Finally, he gets him back. But he Sue's over this whole entry to begin with. He's saying, hey, look, you should have never even gone into my house under those conditions. And then he filed a federal district in a federal lawsuit, and he loses. And then he appeals to the First Circuit and loses...

Caniglia v Strom, (2021), was a United States Supreme Court case related to the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution's "community caretaking" exception. Background. During a heated argument in their home on August 20, 2015, Edward Caniglia grabbed a pistol from a bedroom and threw it on the dining room table. He then asked his wife, Kim, to shoot him with the gun. Although whether the gun was loaded or not was in dispute, Kim hid the gun and the magazine while Edward left for a "ride" after the fight due to concern for his mental condition. As conflict brewed up after Edward returned home, Kim stayed at a hotel. At the hotel, she phoned a furious Edward that night, who brought up topics from the fight. The next day, Kim was unable to reach Edward through any means of contact. She then decided to contact the Cranston, Rhode Island Police Department's non-emergency line because Kim feared he harmed himself after the tirades. Talking with Officer Mastrati, she mentioned the argument, Edward's behavior, and the firearm. Kim clarified that she was not in danger but worried that her husband was in danger. She was further afraid of what she might discover if she returned home. Mastrati called Edward, who agreed to meet with the police. Officers Mastrati, Smith, Russell, and Sergeant Barth met with him outside the Caniglia household. Kim was waiting nearby in her car. Barth observed Caniglia as appearing "agitated" and "angry" while Mastrati and Russell noted "calm," "cooperative," and "normal" behavior. Kim also remarked that Edward was upset that police were called. Sergeant Barth ultimately concluded that Edward posed a danger to himself and others. He then agreed with Barth's request to receive a psychiatric evaluation at a nearby hospital. According to Edward, he complied with the request only because the officers promised they would not confiscate his weapons if he sought treatment. On that same morning, one of the Caniglias informed police that another firearm was present in the home. Barth asked his superiors to confiscate the firearms, with Captain Henry approving the proposal. Kim directed the officers to the locations of the weapons, along with the magazines and associated ammunition. Police knew that Edward owned the items and did not want them seized. After multiple attempts to retrieve the firearms back from the police department, his lawyer requested in October 2015 that the guns be returned to Edward. Two months later, the firearms were returned. Shortly before getting the guns back, Edward sued the City of Cranston and the police department for violating his 4th Amendment rights. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Breaking down the Supreme Court's Decision in Caniglia v. Strom In this episode, Vec discusses the Supreme Court's opinion in Caniglia v. Strom, barring police from seizing guns without a warrant. The Supreme Court unanimously held that law enforcement cannot legally enter homes without a warrant even in cases where doing so may benefit the public interest. Judge Grants Class-Action Status in Mexican Gulf Lawsuit Later in the episode, Vec celebrates the grant of class-action status to Mexican Gulf charter boat captains in Mexican Gulf Fishing Company, et al. v. Department of Commerce, et al. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana granted NCLA's motion for class certification this week and accepted an amended complaint in Mexican Gulf Fishing Company, et al. v. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, et al. The ruling ensures that all members of the class will benefit from the district court's rulings on these privacy issues. In July 2020, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and the U.S. Department of Commerce published a Final Rule requiring Gulf for-hire vessel owners to submit electronic fishing reports “using hardware and software approved by NMFS.” The plaintiffs, charter boat captains and companies that take customers fishing and sightseeing off the coasts of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, say that the rule is the regulatory equivalent of an “ankle bracelet” (or anchor bracelet!) that constantly monitors their businesses and personal lives. The Final Rule mandates that charter boat captains pay for and “permanently affix” a Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and allow the tracking device to relay and store information at all times. Each captain must contact NMFS every time the vessel leaves port—even if just crossing the bay for dinner. On May 17, 2021, the Supreme Court released its decision in Caniglia v. Strom, which focused on whether the community-caretaking exception to the Fourth Amendment’s warrant requirement extended to the home. By a vote of 9-0, the judgment of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit is vacated and the case remanded. Although Justice Thomas's opinion for the Court was unanimous, The Chief Justice filed a concurring opinion, joined by Justice Breyer. Justices Alito and Kavanaugh also filed concurring opinions. Our two experts join us to offer commentary on this decision. Featuring: -- Matt Cavedon, Criminal Defense Attorney, Gainesville, GA-- Robert Frommer, Senior Attorney, Institute for Justice
On May 17, 2021 the Supreme Court decided Caniglia v. Strom. The issue was whether the “community caretaking” exception to the Fourth Amendment’s warrant requirement extends to the home. In a 9-0 opinion authored by Justice Thomas, the Court vacated the ruling of the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and remanded the case. The Supreme Court held, “Neither the holding nor logic of Cady v. Dombrowski justifies the removal of Edward Caniglia’s firearms from his home by police officers under a ‘community caretaking exception’ to the Fourth Amendment’s warrant requirement."Chief Justice Roberts filed a concurring opinion, in which Justice Breyer joined. Justices Alito and Kavanaugh also filed concurring opinions.Robert Frommer, Senior Attorney at the Institute for Justice, joins us to discuss this decision and its implications.
On March 24, 2021 the Supreme Court heard oral arguement in Caniglia v. Strom. The question before the court was whether the “community caretaking” exception to the Fourth Amendment’s warrant requirement extends to the home. Robert Frommer, Senior Attorney at the Institute for Justice, joins us today to discuss this case's oral argument.
In Caniglia v. Strom, the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether the community-caretaking exception to the Fourth Amendment’s warrant requirement extends to the home. The general rule under the Fourth Amendment is that before police perform a search or seizure they must obtain a warrant. The community-caretaking exception, by contrast, allows police to search and seize without a warrant when engaged in community-caretaking activities that are entirely unrelated to the enforcement of criminal statutes. The Supreme Court first created the community-caretaking exception in a case called Cady v. Dombrowski, which involved a crashed car that police towed to a private garage and then searched without first obtaining a warrant. The Court’s decision upholding the officers’ actions noted the differences between homes and vehicles, including that car accidents on public thoroughfares are a “nuisance” requiring officers’ immediate attention. The First Circuit in Caniglia extended the community-caretaking exception to the home. Edward and Kim Caniglia, a married couple, had a disagreement one night in their Rhode Island abode. After Mr. Caniglia retrieved his unloaded handgun and asked “why don’t you just shoot me and get me out of my misery?” Mrs. Caniglia left and spent the night in a motel. The next morning, Mrs. Caniglia had the police escort her home. The police believed Mr. Caniglia could be a threat to himself, so they wanted to take him to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Mr. Caniglia agreed to go based on the officers’ promise that they would not take his handguns while he was gone. But once Mr. Caniglia was admitted to the hospital, the officers entered the home without a warrant and seized his guns, claiming the community-caretaking exception justified their actions. And the First Circuit agreed. Now, the Supreme Court is poised to address, for the first time, whether this community-caretaking exception to the warrant requirement can be applied to searches and seizures within the home. The Supreme Court accepted the case on November 20, 2020 and will hear oral arguments on March 24, 2021.Featuring:-- Robert Frommer, Senior Attorney, Institute for Justice

The Outback Way in Australia, also known as the Longest Shortcut, is a 2800 km trail passing through remote areas which means any adventurous off-roaders need to be prepared for anything, including a medical emergency. Retired school teacher, Doug Mullett, decided to take his V-Strom on the Outback Way, which typically takes about a week to traverse. He took riding courses, a motorcycle first aid course and had detailed emergency plans in place. But even the best laid plans can lead to misadventures, and on two separate adventures in 10 months, the Royal Flying Doctor Service was called in to rescue Doug when on both occasions he came off his bike. Welcome to Front End Chatter Episode 53a, powered yet again by our friends at www.bikesocial.co.uk – and yes, it’s the first of two FECs; 53b will be along shortly. Or at least soon. In the meantime, feast your ears on the will they, won’t they two-wheeled soap opera of Qatar MotoGP – including: how recording BT Sport in hi-def when you haven’t upgraded your package can result in missing the race the argument for and against remounting a crashed bike how Tech3 Yams (pronounced ‘Trois’, but don’t tell Simon) do well at Qatar until a certain Moto2 champion gets carried away disrespeculation about why Crutchlow crashed some nerdy stats about top speed what exactly Lorenzo is packing in his lunchbox plus chatter about World Superbike, World Supersports 600 and 300 at Aragon, and BSB at Donington – including a guest appearance by Martin Fitz-Guintoli... We also say farewell to Sir John Surtees, have a quick tour around Suzuki’s new and rather wonderful V-Strom 650, the less new and less wonderful V-Strom, and chatter about the launch of the least powerful, least torquey, most heavieriest and most expensive Yamaha R6 ever which neither Martin or Simon attended, but about which they have an opinion anyway. Typical. Thanks for listening, your emails will be answered in FEC53b, and please please please get in touch via: email – anything@frontendchatter.com Twitter – @SimonHbikes and @Mufga Facebook – Front End Chatter And, of course, please listen to FEC from our new home at www.bikesocial.co.uk Chatter again soon!

Then, you will get your content....SO this show was mostly all about the International Motorcycle Show at the Jacob Javits Center in New York. Tim, Chris and I met up with some good friends and made a pain of ourselves.... well not really. We behaved mostly. Here's what we did...... Visited Indian and sat on a black Indian. Visited Victory and sat on a Gunner and talked about their Impulse Electric bike. Visited that other American Motorcycle Company who's initials are HD and sat on some bikes there and talked to our good friend Justin Brown of Bergen Harley. Visited Suzuki and critiqued the V-Strom. Visited Honda and checked out the new Africa Twin and their new Automatic Transmission. Visited KTM and questioned the pricing on their 1290 Super Adventure. Visited Yamaha where I fell in love with the Super Tenere'. Visited a brand new company and brand new bike.... Vanguard... $30K.... Check it out. Then I visited and hung out with my very good friend Eric Buell at EBR. We wandered around and also looked at all the available accessories and manufacturers that attended the show. Needed more time but saw quite a bit. Lots of custom bikes and other interesting things. Once again, I had a great time. Pictures will be available shortly on our Photos page.We still don't know where Woody is... and we are worried. That is all for now and we'll be back with our Christmas Special and then we'll take a few weeks off.
