Welcome to a beautiful Monday in the car business! Today we're talking about the VW CEO's fiery message to his managers. We also cover the first Cybertruck built in Austin, as well as the AI implications on the rookie workforce. Show Notes with links:In an address to over 2000 senior managers some described as ‘fiery', Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schaefer warned of significant challenges saying “all is at stake” and “the roof is on fire”   Amid massive investments in electric vehicles, he called for an immediate spending freeze, suggesting operational costs are spiraling. He plans cost-saving "performance programs" and the need for a leaner, more agile company structure.Schaefer called for an immediate freeze on spending, citing high operational costs, and planned to introduce "performance programs" aimed at saving the company over $11 billion over the next three years. The company is set to begin sales of the electric-powered ID.7 sedan in Europe soon, and it also plans to unveil new-generation combustion-engine Tiguan and Passat models.Schaefer criticized the existing structures and processes as being too complex, slow, and inflexible. The company's CFO, Patrik Andreas Mayer, also stressed the critical situation, saying “our vehicle business is unwell' before describing Schaefer's address as a "last call."After a two-year delay marked by component shortages, Tesla announced in a tweet on Saturday that it has finally built its first Cybertruck in it's Austin TX Gigafactory. The photo in the post features a single Cybertruck surrounded by a jovial looking group of hundreds of workers wearing yellow safety vests and hard hatsThe company's plans state an expected 250k trucks per year front the plant however, the ramp up plans are still unclear as Tesla eagerly anticipates being a competitor in the lucrative pickup segmentHistorically, new technologies have favored the younger generations in the workforce as they quickly adapt to and deploy them in their everyday tasks. That may not be the case with generative AI tools like Chat GPT as they are quickly being utilized to automate the mundane tasks traditionally performed by entry-level workers, potentially stunting their professional development.Over the past several years Corporations have already reduced efforts to foster skill development, with little-to-no training or mentorship programs available, leading to job dissatisfaction and a lack of career mobility among younger employees.Maybe the savviest young people will manage the AI outputs, but what will become of the broader culture of mentorship?Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

VW ID.4 GETTING PLUG & CHARGE, BIDIRECTIONAL CHARGING THIS SUMMER - VW Group CEO Herbert Diess hosted an AMA session yesterday on Reddit and got asked more than 1,000 questions. - While he couldn't possibly answer all of them, he did offer some long-awaited updates for VW ID.4 owners, especially those in the United States. As it turns out, an important software update the automaker has promised last year is finally arriving this summer. - "We will have a major OTA update for the ID.4 coming this summer, which will add features like Plug & Charge and Auto Hold, as well as a higher capacity onboard charge capability." - The update will arrive in Vehicle to Home (V2H) form, which means ID.4 owners will be able to power their appliances from the car or the entire house in case of a blackout. Diess stopped short of offering specific details, so it will be interesting to see how VW compares to the Hyundai E-GMP platform output of 2-4 kW. - "Bidirectional charging will be available this year for all ID. Models with 77 kWh battery, also via OTA update. In the beginning we will only offer Vehicle-to-home. This means you can run your dishwasher with electricity from abroad." Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/568191/vw-id4-plugcharge-bidirectional-charging/ VOLKSWAGEN SETS EYES ON $22K EV - The 63-year old CEO also talked about simplifying the company structure and adopting a Tesla-like working style in which different engineering teams work together in the company. “Volkswagen will remain a multi-brand mobility company working worldwide and being present in many segments. To reduce complexity we are focusing on platforms, even more in the future,” Diess said. Volkswagen is banking on its next-generation mechatronics platform Scalable Systems Platform, or SSP, betting on CARIAD for its software needs and aiming to lower battery costs by up to 50% with a unified cells approach. “But yes, in some segments we are still too complex in our product offering. We are making good progress in reducing complexity.” Original Source : https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/02/25680772/volkswagen-sets-eyes-on-22k-ev-as-it-looks-to-rival-tesla-ceo-says-focus-on-simplifying-company-stru VOLKSWAGEN ELECTRIC CARS TO POWER HOMES BY END 2022: DIESS - Volkswagen first introduced a 22kW bidirectional DC charging station in 2020, which it deployed across 20 sites for testing.  It is also dependent on regulatory approval by authorities and utility operators; V2H and V2G (vehicle-to-grid)-capable Nissan Leafs have been deployed in Japan where concerns about energy security amid typhoons, cyclones and nuclear disasters have driven its approval, but its use is still sparse on a global scale.  The capability differs from “vehicle-to-load” introduced by Hyundai and Kia in the Ioniq 5 and EV6, enabling owners to plug directly to the vehicle's lithium-ion battery to power devices like kettles and lights when camping, or recharge batteries in electric bikes and power tools for example. - Diess said that another software upgrade would enable “plug and charge” in the ID.4 my mid-2022, as well as faster charging and “autohold” which maintains the pressure applied in braking to make stopping and starting in traffic a more pleasant experience. “We will have a major OTA update for the ID.4 coming this summer, which will add features like Plug&Charge and AutoHold, as well as a higher capacity onboard charge capability,” he wrote. Original Source : https://thedriven.io/2022/02/17/volkswagen-electric-cars-to-power-homes-by-end-2022-diess/ VW CEO HINTS AT ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK AND SEDANS DURING REDDIT AMA | CARSCOOPS - Diess said the most emotional vehicle in Volkswagen's history is “definitely the micro bus,” so his “first priority” was creating the ID.Buzz which will be unveiled next month. However, he admitted “many other emotional cars are possible on our scalable MEB platform.” - Diess reiterated the company is “working on electric cars around 20k euros for entry segments.” Of course, this isn't really news as Volkswagen unveiled the ID.Life concept at the 2021 Munich Motor Show and noted it “provides a preview of an ID. model in the small car segment that we will be launching in 2025, priced at around 20,000 euros.” Original Source : https://www.carscoops.com/2022/02/vw-group-ceo-hints-at-electric-sedans-and-a-pickup-truck-during-reddit-ama/ - On Lidar, Diess surprisingly took a different tack than his friend, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is adamant that Robotaxis can be made from only vision systems. - Diess remarked that Lidar, or more specifically redundant perception, was integral to getting to Level 3 autonomy, saying: “Lidar technology is still expensive, but todays the only way to offer redundant perception to the 360 camera systems which are a must. Safety is really crucial in autonomous driving. For level 3 driving you need redundant perception.” - He clarified that Level 3 autonomy “requires”  redundant Lidar perception. Volkswagen has partnered with MobileEye for its Lidar systems, which have been dropping in price.  “Yes, definitely level 3 requires redundant Lidar perception.” - As for the when, Diess was a little less specific than Tesla's “this year” timespan.  “autonomous driving is the biggest gamechanger for the automotive industry. we will be able to drive our customers safe and comfortably. This will be a gradual process from taking over responsibility on open highways in good weather conditions getting to more complex environments and weather situations worldwide. So this will be a long process of competition for a long period to come. We are building up competencies to become a serious competitor in this race.” Original Source : https://electrek.co/2022/02/16/vw-ceo-diess-disagrees-with-tesla-ceo-elon-musk-saying-l3-autonomy-requires-lidar-plus-vw-ev-pickup-summer-ota-and-more/ FORD TO RELEASE ELECTRIC PUMA - ELECTRIVE.COM - Ford plans an all-electric version of its Puma small car slated for launch in the 2025 model year. The electric Puma will adopt the drive technology from the electric version of the upcoming Ford Transit Courier. - According to the Australian portal Drive, Ford wants to launch the electric Transit Courier in 2024. With the introduction of the 2025 model year (which usually takes place in the second half of the previous year), the electric Puma would follow shortly afterwards. - The report does not mention possible technical data on the drive for the panel van and the Puma. However, the information that Drive claims to have seen indicates that the electric Puma will not be a new generation of the small SUV but an electric version of the familiar model – using the same internal codename. - Apart from the name, the SUV no longer has anything to do with Ford's small sports coupe in 1997. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/02/17/ford-to-release-electric-puma/ FORD, VOLVO JOIN REDWOOD MATERIALS BATTERY RECYCLING PROGRAM - Redwood Materials, the startup founded by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel, is launching an electric vehicle battery recycling program in California with Ford and Volvo as inaugural partners as pressure mounts to source materials for EVs. - The basic plan is that Redwood Materials will work with dealers and dismantlers in California to recover end-of-life battery packs in hybrid and electric vehicles. Straubel said the program will be free for those turning in vehicle batteries. The cost of retrieving, properly packaging and then transporting the batteries back to Redwood's recycling facility in northern Nevada will be shared by the startup along with partners Volvo and Ford. Redwood will accept all lithium-ion and nickel metal hydride batteries in the state, regardless of the make or model of the vehicle. - Redwood has launched a portal that scrapyards and dealers can use to organize the retrieval of the batteries. - Earlier this year, existing partner Panasonic announced that battery cells made at the Gigafactory it operates with Tesla will use more recycled materials by the end of 2022 as part of an expanded relationship with Redwood Materials. Dafür braucht man Verbrenner.“ Die seien dann klimaneutral.

Show #676   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 24th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VW CEO SAYS RACE IS ON WITH TESLA "Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess is sending a message to Elon Musk: We are coming for Tesla." repotrs Automotive News Europe: "VW is buying software companies and ramping up investments in sustainable vehicles and battery cells, Diess said Friday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Tesla's market value surpassed VW's for the first time this week, even as the U.S. company sells a fraction of the cars VW produces and has yet to record an annual profit.Diess last week called on his top managers to speed up overhaul efforts to make the company more agile or risk being pushed aside."   He said: ""It's an open race. The company which adopts fastest and is most innovative but also which has enough scale in the new world will make the race. 2020 for the auto industry will be a very difficult year, But we're doing the right things to be competitive."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-ceo-says-race-tesla   THE UK NOW HAS 30,000 EV CHARGING CONNECTORS "The United Kingdom‘s electric vehicle charging network continues to grow. There are now more than 30,000 EV charging connectors located across the nation, according to a tweet from UK-based online vehicle charging point locator Zap-Map." says The Next Web: "As of today, there are now 30,140 connectors spread across 10,753 locations, listed on Zap-Map. Trends show the recent growth in the UK EV charging network, particularly over the past 3 years, is a result of fast, rapid, and ultra-rapid charge points being installed."           https://thenextweb.com/cars/2020/01/24/electric-vehicle-charging-connectors-uk-30000-zap-map-ev/   CHARGING NETWORKS FINANCE GROWTH AS EV SALES BOOM "Fastned, the charging company which is building a European network of fast charging stations for electric vehicles, has exceeded its fundraising target as it expands the number of sites it operates." reports Asset Finance Intl: "Around €12 million has been raised from 1,000 subscribers in a bond issue, four times the minimum of €3 million that Fastned wanted to raise. Fastned currently has around 114 stations operational in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK and wants to expand to the rest of Europe, with an initial focus on Belgium, Switzerland and France. It recently received approval for 13 motorway locations in Belgium, which are part of a collaboration with the Highway and Traffic Agency to provide motorway parking in Flanders with fast charging stations."   https://www.assetfinanceinternational.com/index.php/auto-finance/auto-emea/auto-emea-articles/19074-charging-networks-finance-growth-as-ev-sales-boom   MG ZS EV GARNERS 2,800 BOOKINGS IN 27 DAYS "MG (Morris Garages) Motor India garnered 2,800 bookings for the new ZS electric vehicle in 27 days during the first round of bookings. The carmaker claims that the number of bookings received for the ZS EV outpaced the total number of electric vehicles sold in India in 2019." reports IndiaToday.in: "The deliveries of MG ZS electric vehicle will start on January 27 across Delhi/NCR, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad."   https://www.indiatoday.in/auto/latest-auto-news/story/mg-zs-ev-garners-2800-bookings-in-27-days-check-out-all-the-details-here-1639514-2020-01-23   TESLA FINALLY DECLARES VICTORY OVER TERRIBLE LAW "According to the Associated Press, a deal has just been made between Tesla and the state of Michigan." says CarBuzz: "The agreement will allow Tesla to deliver vehicles in Michigan. There does appear to be a catch: Tesla buyers will have to have their vehicles titled in another state and then transferred to Michigan. Furthermore, the vehicles will be serviced and sold by a Tesla subsidiary. Tesla hasn't been completely absent from Michigan, home to America's Big Three automakers. In the Detroit suburb of Troy, there's a so-called "gallery" Tesla store at a local mall. Anyone can walk in and look around, but employees are forbidden from discussing pricing, leasing, or any other sales-related topics."   https://carbuzz.com/news/tesla-finally-declares-victory-over-terrible-law   AUDI SHOWCASES MOBILE EV CHARGING FACILITY AT WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM "Audi has provided the mobility and charging stations solutions at the World Economic Forum in Davos and 90 per cent of the shuttle fleet were electrified models, claims the company." reported by Economic Times: "The auto company used mobile charging containers made with used Audi e-tron batteries, specially developed for the purpose. It claims using roughly 100 electrified Audi models in combination with the shipping containers for charging allowed the company to operate a virtually CO2-neutral shuttle fleet for the Davos event. Audi claims that it has plans to use the mobile charging stations in 20 further cases in 2020 alone, with one being the Formula E in Rome."   https://auto.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/passenger-vehicle/cars/audi-showcases-mobile-ev-charging-facility-at-world-economic-forum/73581670   UBER LANDS ELECTRIC CAR DEAL WITH NISSAN "Uber will offer drivers in the U.K. electric cars from Nissan at a discount, the company said Friday, as it faces a potential ban in London."n according to CNBC: "The ride-hailing operator has signed an agreement with Nissan to introduce a fleet of 2,000 of the Japanese automaker's Leaf hatchbacks for drivers using its app in Britain. While the deal is technically open to all U.K. drivers, it's primarily targeted at those working in London. The deal with Nissan arrives at a difficult time for the company, which faces being blocked in the U.K.'s capital after Transport for London (TfL) stripped it of its license. Uber has since appealed the move, and can continue operating in the city while it fights the ban in the courts."   https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/01/23/uber-signs-electric-car-deal-with-nissan-in-uk-as-it-fights-london-ban.html   DAIMLER TO BUILD 50,000 MERCEDES EQC MODELS THIS YEAR "Daimler on Thursday said it plans to build 50,000 Mercedes EQC electric cars this year, denying a report in Manager Magazin which claimed it had been forced to pare back its 2020 production targets due to battery supply problems." says Reuters today: "Manager Magazin said Mercedes had slashed its production target to 30,000 from about 60,000 because of a shortage of battery cells from LG Chem. A Daimler spokesman said its production plans for 2020 had not been amended. Daimler’s works council chief Michael Brecht told Manager Magazin that one of the reasons the company is struggling to meet battery demand is because Tesla bought Grohmann Engineering, a battery automation specialist hired by Mercedes-Benz to build up its own battery manufacturing capacity. This caused problems for Daimler which was in the midst of ramping up production at its electric vehicle battery production unit Deutsche Accumotive."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-daimler-electric-eqc/mercedes-halves-ev-production-target-due-to-battery-shortage-manager-magazin-idUSKBN1ZM1SA     NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   With increasing attacks on EVs and vandalism caught on camera, why do some people have a problem with EVs?     I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 230 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future.
