ARE YOU MAKING YOUR JOURNEY CHOPPIER THAN IT NEEDS TO BE?   I was ADDICTED to the struggle of swimming against my intuition. I lived on ‘shoulds’ - always based on what I believed that others wanted for/from me.   Then I’d MOAN… “Oh, poor me, life is so HARD.” “Why do others have it easier than me?” “The world hates me.”   Are any of those feelings familiar, love? They began to feel comfortable for me… They were what I used as an excuse to keep FIGHTING against listening to my INNER VOICE.   Don’t get me wrong, even now, life can feel choppy! And it’s then that I have to ask myself two super important questions…   Am I making this journey choppy? Do I NEED this choppiness for my growth?   You see, the Universe sends us obstacles and difficulties to overcome so that we GROW.   Life is not about avoiding choppiness entirely.   Life is about recognising WHO / WHAT is causing that choppiness… If it’s your ego, then all you’re achieving is yet more pain / annoyance. Disciple Up # 185 A Disciple's Identity, Pt. 1 By Louie Marsh, 11-11-2020   Intro.   This is coming out on Veteran's Day – November 11th so Thank You!   1) Jesus tells me what it TAKES & MEANS to be His disciple.   1  Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. Matthew 5:1 (ESV)   In Greek THE mountain – the Sinai of the NT   2) He begins by describing WHO & WHAT real disciples of Jesus are.   2  And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3  “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4  “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5  “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6  “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7  “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8  “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9  “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Matthew 5:2-9 (ESV)   A new view of the Beatitudes.   Jesus begins the SOTM by vision casting who and what authentic disciples of him really are. All true disciples already have these characteristics. To one degree or another. No perfectionism here.   The Beatitudes contain:   No VERBS In the 3RD PERSON No COMMANDS OR APPLICATION   What are they?   They are simply a description of   They form a circle   1st Beatitude blessed are ____ theirs IS 2nd – 7th – SHALL 8th – IS   Is exists now, shall is a promise of something to come at some point in the future   We are in the Kingdom NOW it's benefits will come to us, but note we are not told when.   The last beatitude is repeated as a transition point.   10  “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11  “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12  Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:10-12 (ESV)   3) God's TRANSFORMATION of me is the real blessing.   Blessed – used 55 times in the NT. Used of outward prosperity and of the gods themselves in the Greek. Yet it's not the common Greek word for happy which isn't found in the NT. In the Bible there's a moral and spiritual dimension added to it.   13  And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!” Revelation 14:13 (ESV)   17  If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. John 13:17 (ESV)   11  in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted. 1 Timothy 1:11 (ESV)   Many scholars translate it as happy. One well know Christian author and Pastor, and former chaplain of the US Senate Lloyd John Ogilvie said it should be translated “Congratulations!”   Test both out –   The glory of the happy God  The glory of the congratulated God   Happy are the poor in spirit – Congratulations you poor in spirit! 4) To really follow Jesus I must ABANDON myself.   3  “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3 (ESV)   Poor = extreme poverty. Think starving people in refugee camp kind of poverty.   Discipleship means I push back against our culture's SELFISM .   34  And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. Mark 8:34-35 (ESV)   A radical departure from our culture of selfism. Selfism = believe in yourself, etc.   American Culture more than most tells us that life is manageable if only we try hard enough, get educated enough etc. That's a lie. Thinking will power will get you through is a lie as well. Will power becomes won't power quick enough.   Will power becomes won't power very quickly. Will power makes me SELF-ABSORBED.   23  And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. Luke 9:23 (ESV)   Cultures mixed message on self – need self-esteem, self-motivation. Everyone sends you all sorts of things saying “you've got this,” “Believe in yourself.”  People are urged to “find themselves.”   But at the same time we're told that “Where ever you go there you are,” and “You are your biggest problem.”   So which is it? According to the greatest leader, thinker and teacher of all time – you need to become selfless!   Jesus says to listen to your doubts when you think I can't do it, I'm not able. Because they are telling you the truth! You cannot save yourself and you cannot become like Christ by yourself.   The main problem all of us face is more than psychological it is spiritual. Problems go beyond what any of us can deal with except God alone.   AA 1st Step: We admitted we were powerless over alcohol that our lives had become unmanageable.   Christianity isn't self-help – it is self-surrender, self-denial, dying to self and living to God.

HAPPY MONDAY MOTIVATION! Welcome back to the weekly podcast No More Excuses! I appreciate you listening and sharing my podcasts and connecting with me on social media. All ways to connect with me are you my website (except Instagram for some reason!!) The last few weeks podcasts have been about BLAME! Who & What we blame for our lack of progress. I've shared storied about clients who finally realized they were blaming others for their lack of progress toward a goal - their SUCCESS. And, I've also shared their success stories once they changed their mindset!  As I've also mentioned... CONSISTENCY is KEY! Once you stop the blaming, own your shit and create the PLAN, you will see the progress. But... what happens when you STOP doing what you "said" you were going to do? You saw the results! You were excited by the results, so what happened? Well, if you're not going to keep the consistency and newly formed habits you created, then you can't bitch about the less-then-stellar results now can you? We all need a break. A vacation. A weekend with friends. Sometimes you get sick. Even a business trip can throw you off-track, but... are you prepared for it? Again, if you don't figure out a way to keep the consistency going during these times, the lack of results are on you! Don't start blaming again!  Listen in this week as I talk about a new client who wasn't necessarily blaming, although she did have a few excuses about lack of time (although she said she's "not a morning person" and "doesn't like to get up when it's cold and dark"!) This Podcast Is Episode Number 0270, And It Will Be About Construction Contractors Need Help From Knowledgeable Advisors Everywhere there a Buzz Words and lots of people who say they are Experts in their field. Question is What the Expert knows is in a topic that is useful to you? Everyone wants to be paperless. It is not so much about saving a Tree as saving Time. How can I get to My Bookkeeper, My Accountant, My Tax Accountant the information they need to develop the reports? Most contractors tell me "Actually, I don’t want the reports I only want to know "scraps of information" so I can run My Business better. If there is an easy way to get the job done; I want to know it. There must be an App For That." There are several apps and we have one just for Construction Contractors. It does a lot but no app does everything. One of the first questions I am asked is do I have to keep my receipts? After all, I used my debit card, and it is all on the bank statement Bank Statements do not give all of the information needed to run your business. If you write a check, it will say When and How Much but not the “Who” and definitely not on WHY you wrote a check. Debit card transactions have Who, When and How Much; still no WHY. My answer is Yes – Please. Many suppliers will take a product back IF you have a receipt. A few with your credit card will be able to find your transaction and be able to credit the purchase back to the card. For everyone else; your receipt is the fastest way to document you actually made the purchase. Stores return policy is as generous as they can be. But not everyone can offer 100% refund for something that is obviously worn out, purchased from somewhere else or sometime long ago. We have all heard stories where dress clothes (with tags attached and hidden) are worn to a “fancy party” (New Year’s Eve’s) and next day returned to the store for a full refund. I don’t know of anyone personally who has done it but reading on the internet – many stores have changed return policies because of this type of customers (not clients). Kinda like being an “Unwelcome Pest” instead of a “Welcome Guest.” I was in a store who refused to accept a return from the customer in front of me. The clerk told the customer they had made Too Many Returns. We want to be the Welcomed Guest, be a good neighbor, friend, the benefit to our community as we provide “Goods and Services” to our friends and clients. Not everyone is a Good Client or Customer.   Tax Accountants are someone every Contractor should have. Why, when Turbo Tax can do it all? Turbo Tax is in simple terms an “AI” programmed to fill in the blanks based on the information you give it. So as an AI, the software might be smarter than you and I; but remember that “The Computer” does not win whenever playing against “Chess Masters” and a “Real Person” has done the programming. Here are the Should Have, Ought To Have, Maybe, Because [fill in the blank] with as many as you can think of and here are some more. You have already “Over Handled” your documents; especially if you are doing all of your own bookkeeping. I can’t afford to “Hire It Out” Sometimes your budget is “Toast!” Are you spending time doing the right things? The old saying “Sell Your Way Out Of A Problem” is true, but be sure you have done the right job for the right client, and the right price can only be answered when the accounting system has the proper information. The answer is a knowledgeable person between the keyboard and chair touching the keys. Hint - There is a difference between Void and Delete.   Quicken could work as an overgrown checkbook. What would it tell you? Wait, I took the easy step interview, synced to my bank; it has everything it needs!  Does It? or does it have everything YOU think it needs to be based on what you know? If you are the Smarted Person in the room – Fantastic. Excited to meet someone who has read and understood everything on the internet. All information is “Free, Perfect, Now!” Still doesn’t mean it is useful information to anyone and everyone who reads it versus just tons of general data. We each have different opinions on “What Is Important.”   Questions to ask your New or Existing Tax Accountant Explain the differences in Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, Limited Liability Company, S-Corporation. Now, What is the Difference when it comes to Taxes Hint – Self Employment Tax Some Respected Attorneys do not understand the differences between a Tax Point of View.   Should I have my spouse as part of the company? Paid or Unpaid?   Maybe I don’t need to add them if something happens to me [she|he] gets everything.   I want to hire other Family Members to work in my company. Should I have them as an employee, part of management or own a portion of the company?    I want my friends to be part of the company; we have a great time on Friday night. We all agree that they would be an asset. (Does the part “We All Agree” include your spouse? Occasionally Spouses find being supportive becomes a “Full Time” unpaid position.   Is there a tax benefit to hiring my Teenage or College Children Part-time? Your Tax Accountant’s role is to roll up your business life, personal life (including spouse, children, assets, home, retirement account, stock market accounts, odds and ends of side income) and file your business and personal income taxes. Some states do not have an Income Tax (Washington) but have numerous other taxes. Soda Tax, Sales tax, Vehicle tax, Property taxes that continue to increase and more. Have you ever played “Where’s Waldo” or walked through a “Corn Maze” to get in the spirit of Halloween? Being in business is challenging every day. There are no shortage demands on your time. Who is working for Who? What type of contractor do you want to be? General Contractor or Specialty Trade Contractor? Do you provide Design and Install or just Design or just Installation? Are you working directly with the Home Owner? Do you work as a Specialty Trade Contractor for a General Contractor? Are you being paid by the Owner or by the General Contractor”? Having employees can seem like You Are Working For Them Instead of Them Working For You (except you are paying in cash, loss of time, taxes, and other Cash and Non-Cash Benefits (which takes cash). Do you have W-2 employees? Are you paying them to watch you work (under the premise of teaching them)? Do you have Specialty Trade Contractors work for you?    Are they Bonded, Insured, carry their own Worker’s Comp policy?   Are you treating your employees as 1099 contractors so avoid collecting and paying taxes? Hint – Use a Labor Service or Payroll Service. State Labor Laws can be complicated   It's All About Getting Paid You Know How To Do The Work Are You Getting Paid For It?   Do you have a written contract or invoice that the Client signs? Do you set the payment schedule in your contracts? Do you receive Job Deposits on larger projects?   Is the payment schedule set by Others?   Have you given the owner of the property a “Notice To The Owner?” Followed by a “Notice Of Intent To Lien” if they decide you be doing “free work?” With a Specialty Contractor with a “Pay When Paid” clause? Are you working New Construction, Residential Remodels, Small Commercial Projects (TI’s)? They are each different. As a Construction Contractor, you understand the difference between the type of work you do. It is important to verify that your Tax Accountant has a clue about what you do. As a Construction Contractor, you have many expenses that an “Independent Traveling Sales Person” would not have. It is by exception that a Construction Contractor completes a project without having any Leftover Stuff. Outside Sales People tend to lease their vehicle and miles are usually freeway miles so taking a mileage deduction makes sense. The wear and tear on your vehicle are huge. Almost Always taking actual expenses is better. You haul stuff from the supplier to the job site. You create a mess in the process of remodeling a house. Now that my school is 1:1, I have my students do warm-ups in an interactive journal using Google Slides. It used to take me forever to grade their paper journals and I always dreaded it...until this year. I now collect the online "journals" once a quarter and I use the Doctopus add-on with a Goobric to grade them. This has saved me a lot of time AND increased how much feedback I'm able to give them. Win win! Also, I've used their bell-ringer/warm-up journals to review vocabulary words. I randomly assigned students a vocabulary word and asked them to find an image that show the words meaning. Next, students put their slides in presentation mode, then do a gallery walk. As they view each other's work, they write down the vocabulary word they think is being depicted on a sticky note next to each laptop. When students return to their seat, they'll know whether their picture sufficiently showed their assigned word's meaning based on their peer's anonymous feedback. My faith has a purpose. Heb. 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.In this life of faith. What is the benefit in setting it right? This week Sharon discusses the importance of embracing failure. (Fail forward!) Gain distinctions about how to own your own story, what it means to be (and be a part of) a deliberately developmental organization, and our default reactions to failure. Sharon shares tips for how to get comfortable stepping into the Fail Forward! mindset and offers questions to prompt your own reflection on this topic. Plus she brings in perspectives from both the "Harvard Business Review" and the "Gilmore Girls." Enjoy! Ideas Shared: We are all writing the stories of our lives all the time, whether or not we are conscious of it. When we own our authorship, we step into our power not just to own what happens next, but to go back and revise how we tell the story of our past as well. As the authors of our own lives, we tend to either write from the perspective of a Hero In Victory or a Hero in Retreat. I like to think of this in plain terms as operating from a place of strength (read: victory) vs. operating from a place of reactivity (read: retreat). What do we tend to do when we hit failure: Sweep it under the rug and keep moving (e.g. Who? What failure? I didn’t see any failure!) 2. Give it extreme importance and let it stop us in our tracks (e.g. Excuse me while I go climb back into bed.) While it may be human nature to run away from failure, there is so much research out there that suggests that running towards failure can be a tremendously positive catalyst for individuals and organizations. Tips for embracing a Fail Forward mindset: Honor whatever emotions show up when the potential for – or actual failure – is present – this is a practice of building emotional resilience Be in the practice of celebrating your failures – that can be in a journal or other private form, in a shared way with a friend, trusted colleague Model that it’s okay to fail – and learn from your failure with others (this is the kind of behavior  that moves cultures) Create a process for learning from your failures Reflection prompts to support you on your Fail Forward path: Name 3 times you have failed in your life. Notice for each one: What did it feel like to fail? What was at stake in not succeeding? Notice, without judgement, if you have any default tendencies when it comes to failure? (Rush ahead? Climb in bed?) What did you learn from these failures at the time? What new learning might today – with all the new experiences you have had – offer you about these past failures? What are you afraid of that’s keeping you in place? What might happen if you gave yourself permission not just to fail, but to celebrate your failures? What are simple ways that you could begin failing forward today – this week – the month? Finally, who doesn’t want to learn about failure through the lens of the Gilmore Girls? Here is some sage wisdom dished out by Lorelei Gilmore to her daughter’s best friend Lane: “Everybody does stupid things [in high school]; it’s like a requirement…everybody screws up …that’s what happens. It’s what you do with the screw ups and how you handle the experience, that’s what you should judge yourself by.” So true, Lorelei, so true.
